Combo Drive quit after replacing PMU/Battery board

Hi-
My Pismo (firewire, 400mhz) has a combo drive which barely worked, but worked up until
I had to replace the PMU/Battery logic board. Now it won't recognize a cd or dvd, period.
Up to now, it made a lot of noise but it would load a cd and eventually play it. I wonder if I have to
re-install software for this, or if maybe it was just time for it to finally die. (I reset the PRAM
and the PMU; I tried Disk Permissions; it's listed but no fixes are made available (all the options are in light grey and cannot be selected). I have the 10.3.9 install disk, and a system restore disk;
they don't play.. however i have not tried to reboot from them.
If I do try booting from a system restore or system install disk, will I lose any and all stuff I have now (music, etc).. or will it just update and repair the system?
thanks in advance
sr
ps in my system profiler I see the combo drive is listed twice. It wasn't before.

Here's how I revived my Pismo's failed disc drive. http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/290895-how-resurrect-failed-laptop-disc-driv e.html

  • Combo drive fails after a few seconds

    Hi,
I've got a powerbook G4 with DVD/CD-RW combo drive (about 3 - 4 years old). Just recently I played a DVD and a few seconds in, it stops playing. This is also happening with Audio CD's. After this happens, OSX 10.3.9 is unable to 'force quit' the application (DVD player, iTunes etc.). When I go into the system profiler, it is unable to find the optical drive I have just been using. I then restart but this does not solve the problem unless I remove the power supply i.e. battery and AC power cable. Also when I try to eject the disc, it won't and I need to remove the battery and power supply, reboot and then the drive is recognised again allowing me to eject the disc. Today I ran the extended hardware test and all passed fine.
Any ideas as to what my problem could be? Is the drive dead? Laser or memory problem?
To anyone who can offer advice, thanks in advance!
    Alan

    welcome to the discussions,
first i would recommend you verify and repair permissions, and look through this link and might download one or more of the freeware or shareware programs as mentioned to do some general cleanup and see if that helps, often it does the trick.

  • After replacing the logic board in my Macbook Pro it will no longer connect to the App Store.

I recently had to replace the logic board in my early 11 Macbook Pro (first gen i7).  With the release of Yosemite just a few weeks away I am trying to update from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I'm afraid if I don't after this update it will become much harder.  I always lived by the rule if it ain't broke and for a long time Snow Leopard worked very well for what I needed to do.  All my software is current and there are no updates pending.  All my Keychain Access System Roots Certificates are good and I have no problems getting into iTunes.  I thought it might be something on Apples end but after 36 hours it's still the same problem.  When I try to open the App Store I get this:
Any ideas.  I don't use the App Store that much but until this I had never had this problem before.
    Thanks for the help.

  • After replacing new battery on iphone 5 it wont come on and vibrates when i plug in usb

After replacing my iphone 5 battery and checking connections several times my phone wont boot up. Its connecting to my computer no probs just no display. I tried to do a soft restart and restore it but got nowhere. I've checked there was no damage to any connecters and they are all fine and then gently blew it with compressed air to no avail. I tried putting my old battery in and its the same thing. If I try charge it it vibrates twice every 5 seconds. That's the only thing it will do. Any help would be appreciated

  • Combo Drive Problem - External Replacement - iDVD Help

Recently the Combo Drive on my flat panel iMac went bad. It no longer does anything. I see that this is a common senerio.
I just purchased an external CD/DVD multi recorder (HP 940 - USB). It works great went burning CD's (from iTunes) and Burn folders. However, whenever I try to burn from iDVD the computer doesn't seem to know that it is plugged in. It just ejects my internal combo drive drawer which doesn't work. Does anyone know how to get the iMac to recognize an external burner when burning from iDVD?
    Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Patchburn (link) driver might help but iDVD isn't the best for working with any old 3rd party burner.
It could also be a USB thing. Most iMac G4 have USB1.1 which is really too slow for proper DVD burning. If it has it connect the device via the much faster Firewire connection.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Hard Drive Not detected after replacing DC In Board

So after more than a year of jiggling an easliy bent AC adapter in the port to get my ibook G4 to charge it just quit and would not charge. I suspected it was the slightly loose DC in port (having no idea what was behind the little hole) so I took it to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store where they confirmed it was likely the DC in board. I was told that just sending my little old ibook away to get fixed would cause an exorbitant $330 just to ship it out, never mind any parts, etc. It was suggested I just buy a new macbook and be done with it. But we've been through a lot and I didn't want to just toss her away so I found a DC In board and replaced it myself. Parts and directions courtesy of ifixit.com
So the part is working well enough that it detects the new AC Adapter (this one new and unbent), which is great. Now I have a slightly larger problem and that is the dreaded little finder/? flashing icon that comes up when I start the computer. It won't start in safe mode. I can't find the original disks (Panther OSX) that came with it. I popped in my Tiger Install Disk and that (Thankfully) came up so I was able to open Disk Utility and lo and behold no hard drive was detected. Just the optical drive and the Tiger DVD.
I was so careful! Did I poke the Hard Drive or something? Is she mad at me for opening her? If anyone has any advice on how I can repair this myself please let me know. I'm desparate to have my baby back.

It's possible that something was disrupted during the repair. You might go back to the ifixit site and look at the instructions for replacing the hard drive. You want to try and see if somehow you disconnected it or something like that. There's a good chance that it is something simple that you can fix. Looking at the pictures might trigger a memory of maybe something taken loose and not reconnected. And try to find your original discs--you will need them.
    Good luck!

  • Hard Drive Failed after replacement

My computer recently went in for a repalcement harddrive from HP Support as it is still under warranty. After recieving it back I went and ran the same test that told them the harddrive had failed last time and recieved a failure id of
    GGANWC-67H6K8-XD7X1F-60SF03
It looks similar to the last one. Is this a Bios issue causing the hard drive to give errors or is it another faulty harddrive?
    This question was solved.

    Hello TheProfitible,
You have just had the HDD replaced and now you are getting a similar error that it has failed again.
The code checks that the HDD has failed.
You should call HP and have them replace the drive again and check the motherboard. It could be a problem with the motherboard failing.
    Sorry to hear it happened.

  • After Replacement cmos battery R40

Good morning, i have i Thinkpad R40 to repair. He has a problem with date and time.
I replace the cmos battery with ref  panasonic cr2032 lithium battery ibm p/n 02k6541 fru p/n 02k6572.
The battery is good, I replace the cmos battery  but the problem is still the same.
The computer don't keep date and time.
    Thankyou for help

richk read my mind, I know I've seen a post about exactly that point somewhere, but can't find it.
The correct FRU for the CMOS battery is 92P0991.  If suspicions are correct the one you have fitted is for quite a lot of ThinkPad models, but the R40 had the same battery with reversed polarity.

  • Problem - cannot format hard drive even after replacement

Dead hard drive. I was able to recover part of the data in firewire mode.
Rebooting from OSX disk hangs with a circle slash. Same if I try to reboot with Diskwarrior CD or TTPro. Removing the hard drive has the same result.
Booting from an external firewire utility drive is successful, however I'm unable to successfully reformat the hard drive. Disk Utility sees the drive, and begins to reformat, but hangs at about 10%, and it instantly shows more than 10 partitions but none of them successfully are created. Drive Genius just fails to initialize.
I tried a different hard drive, same result.
Apple Hardware Test and TTpro all show that hardware is OK.
    Any ideas?

    Hi James,
I'm not clear on some things:
"Rebooting from OSX disk hangs with a circle slash.
Same if I try to reboot with Diskwarrior CD or TTPro.
Removing the hard drive has the same result.
Correct. I cannot boot from ANY bootable CD except AHT, not even with the internal drive completely disconnected.

First you say you can't boot with DW or TTP, then you
say AHT and TTP show hardware is OK. So you
can boot with DW and TTP?
I cannot boot from ANY CD. But I CAN boot from an external firewire drive. My iPod is a diagnostic drive, which includes TTP and AHT. Oh, and I CAN boot from an AHT CD but only into AHT, not beyond AHT into the finder.
Are you running an OS on the external HD that's at
least as new as the one that originally shipped on
    the PB?
Yes. It's the brand new version of Protogo that just came out in Jan 07. I've also tried CD's from 9.1 to 10.4.
Have you reseated your RAM? Tried with just one
module? Switched that module to the other slot?
Repeated same process with other module?
Yes, that was actually the first thing I tried.
If still no luck, try removing the bottom cover,
gently snugging up all the screws you can find,
flipping the keyboard up and doing the same, then try
    booting (with bottom cover off).
If still no luck, I would try the
    href="http://www.posner.net/marc/projects/TiBook/TiBoo
    k.html">Orange Ribbon Cable Fix.
If still no luck, sounds like a logic board issue, or
possible the display cables in the hinges.
    Tried that too...no change.

  • Palm T/X will still not turn on after replacing bad battery! Help!

Have had this Palm T/X since December '07 and when it was working I had absolutely no problems or issues.  One day at work, I noticed that it felt unusually hot in my pocket and found that it had been switched on accidently and who knows how long it had been running.  I had to hit reset to get it to respond and turn off.   Got home to recharge it and it has never turned on since.  That was about 8 months ago.
I took it in to a reputable dealer and had the battery changed.  The tech related to me that the old battery was shorted out and non functional.  Unfortunetly even with the new battery and sitting on the charger for hours it is not responding to the power switch nor to any attempt at a hard or soft reset.  What can cause this?  Is my T/X dead forever?  Now this was a gift so I'm not afraid to invest in some replacement parts, I just need to appeal to those more knowledgable to brainstorm some other potential injuries!  Thank you in advance for your time and suggestions!
    Post relates to: Palm TX

I would suggest you talk with the reputable dealer about the problem - it sounds like the problem lay deeper than just the battery!
From this side of the computer screen, we have no way of telling what went wrong!
Water damage, physical damage from being dropped/flexed, plugged into a higher voltage than recommended, we just can't guess, sorry!

  • My Mac has been randomly shutting off. Apple recently replaced my battery, and then performed several diagnostics tests on it. After replacing the battery, they said that everything passed.

I evaluated the internal temp (using Istats pro) and it is at 86.5 degrees feh (about 22 c*). Is that normal? What tools can I utilize to ensure that the internal system prevents from overheating. I have the Mac running on a cooling fan.

AS Ralph indicated, the system does not allow for that.
B.) I will post the Istats screen when I get home from work.
My concern is that the temperature you reported is abnormally low.  Thus I would like to see an image of the temperature monitor.  In sounds more like Centigrade.
Also post an image of Activity Monitor showing ALL PROCESSES and % CPU displaying values from high to low.  This way we can determine if  the temperature readings reflect the activity being performed on the MBP.

  • Looking for combo drive part numbers

I recently saved an iBook from the dumpster and want to update the cd rom with a combo drive. After looking online and on eBay, I see LOTS of drives. However, i don't know the exact part number(s) that will work with mine. Help anyone.
    Thanks

Thanks for the information. I have looked at the instructions online for replacing the drive and am not 100% sure I am up to the task. On the other hand, I would really like to replace the cd drive and put in a larger hard drive so I guess it would be best to do it all at once while I have it apart.

  • Hard drive glitches after battery replacement... normal?

Hello, I have a 4Gen 20gig ipod with click wheel and I just replaced the battery myself last night.
I then plugged it into my computer to sync and it was recognized by windows, but not by iTunes, the hard drive would whir, then click and then try again, then stop. I figured it was just that the battery wasn't charged enough yet, so I let it charge overnight.
In the morning it synced fine. I was then playing it in the car, and some songs would appear, then the hard drive would whir, click a couple of times, then skip on to the next one. After a couple songs it started playing them normal. After skipping a few and the hard drive spun to load more music into the temporary memory, it would whir, click and then skip the song, then whir click and skip that one too... and it kept doing it. Then I reset it, and it kept showing the apple symbol, then the Exclamation and folder icon, then tried restarting again. After trying to reset itself 4 or 5 times, it finally succeeded.
I read a few threads on here, gave the ipod a gentle nudge on the right hand corner a few times, and now its playing and I haven't had any symptoms yet for about an hour.
Is this normal for a hard drive on an iPod to glitch after a battery replacement? I had no such problems when I had the other battery in it, so it's hard to believe that the hard drive is going bad exactly at the same time I changed batteries. It is the right battery for the right iPod, anyone else experience this or have any words of wisdom or comfort?

Even if the noise was a dirty hard drive you can't clean the innards of one. You cannot even open one. Well you can, once.

my computer has been seen at Genius bar 6 times for freezing up, reloaded all original settings, all of their diagnostics, and they even sent it to the apple shop where they replaced the battery and logic board. Hi Ronald ...
Have you checked lately to see how much free space there is on the disk? Especially since iPhoto freezes at launch ...
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
And make sure the OS X software is up to date.
Click the Apple  top left in your screen.
From the drop down menu click:   Software Update
If you have anti virus software installed or are using third party Mac cleaning utiliites, that may be part and parcel of the your problems.
