Combo drive replacement help plz!!!

My combo drive stopped working suddenly. My warranty also got void last month (forgot to renew, my bad).
Can I replace my MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8123 with a 8121A Combo Drive?
Also please give your suggestions where can I get a good drive (used/new) and also get it repaired.
Thanks in advance.

First welcome to the discussions.
Have a look here and see if this helps. There are several different companies that make new drives available this is just one.

  • Combo Drive replacement cost???

I was quoted $150 for a combo drive replacement over the phone for my G4 ibook. That was if it needed to be replaced, because as far as I can tell the problem is a felt strip that came un-glued.
The store charged a $80 "diagnostic" fee which I thought was going to go twards looking into the felt issue.
Now, they have changed the quote to $400 and said they don't fix drives if they are broken, they just repair them. They said it's a $240 part and two hours ($80/h) labor.
I can't get the $80 back even though they never opened the computer. Their "diagnositcs" found that the optical drive would not accept CD's, which "duh" that's why I brought it to them. They didn't do anything other than try to load a CD.
I feel like I'm being taken for a ride. Bait and Switch. What should I do?
Is it really a two hour job to swap the optical drive?
Is there any way to get my $80 back? If I knew they were not going to look at the drive and charge me $400, I would have never gone in the store. I can get an external combo drive for $69.
    thanks folk

Contact the Better Business Bureau and/or your State's consumer protection department about the rip off.
As for replacing the drive, check out the Superdrive replacement being sold by mcetech.com. The drive costs $149 and they have a $49 or $99 installation option.

  • Macbook Pro won't start after Combo drive replacement

I have a Macbook Pro 1,1 which had a non-functiong Combo drive. I got a similar Combo drive out of a Macbook 1,1, and put it in the mbp. I have the HD partitioned in three with 10.6.3, 10.6.8 and Windows XP on the partitions.
Since replacing the Combo drive the computer will not boot from the 10.6.8 partition, but it boots fine from the other two! I have started it is taget disk mode, and connected to a Macbook and the Macbook will boot from the 10.6.8 partition.
When I try to start the mbp frpm the 10.6.8 partition I get the Apple logo, then the spinning wheel, then finally a stop sign (circle with a slash through it).
Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

    gim461,
try booting from the 10.6.3 partition, and run Disk Utility. Try verifying the 10.6.8 partition (using the Verify Disk button). Does it come back with a clean bill of health? If not, press the Repair Disk button. When that’s done, reboot into the 10.6.8 partition, but hold down the Shift key to boot into Safe mode. Does it let you boot into the 10.6.8 partition in Safe mode?

  • Qosmio G10-133 Question about DVD COMBO Drive replacement

    Hi
my laptop has a DVD driver labled UJ-830B but the device managaer reports that it is a UJ-830S. I have posted before saying I haven't been able to burn DVDs. It gets part way through then errors out saying unable to burn. I have used various software and disc makes but all to no avail.
I purchased an external burner which burns no problems, however it does defeat the object of having one built into the lapotop!!!
Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement drive? I have already tried an NEC 5540A drive, but my laptop didn't recognise that it was installed. I assume it is something to do with Master/Slave?? If the laptop doesn't recognise the drive I am obviously unable to flash any firmware.
    Somebody please help.....

    Hi
Seems you have already noticed that the drive replacement is not so easy.
The internal notebook drives dont support any jumpers like the external drives for desktop PCs and the settings are fixed and in my knowledge not changeable
I found some compatible drives numbers but unfortunately, I did not find the drive names.
It seems this are any internal part numbers.
    DVD Super Multi Drive
    - MATSU****A (G8CC00021610) UJ830
    - MATSU****A (G8CC0001S610)
DVD Super Multi Drive (supporting Double-Layer)
    - MATSU****A (G8CC00021611)
    - TEAC (G8CC00024611)
However, the service partner could provide you a information about compatible drive.

  • Combo Drive Replacement?

    Hello Everyone,
Since I have my MacBook's Birthday tomorrow, I was thinking of getting a desktop companion to replace my Blueberry 350 Mhz iMac, which sadly passed away 2 days ago.
I am about to purchase a Blue Dalmatian iMac from eBay. I know it has a CD-RW Drive in it, but I would like to replace it with a Combo Drive if I can find one. I know that there never was a "Combo" CRT iMac, but could someone direct me to a place where I can get a compatiable Combo Drive for very cheap ($25-$30)?
    Thank you!
    -Brian

I haven't come across a Combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive for the slot-loading iMacs, but MCE Technologies had an internal DVD±RW SuperDrive for $149. That price and the resulting decline in demand for it probably explain why it has been "Out of Stock" for months now. I can only assume that it's discontinued. You'd be much better off connecting a FireWire drive, because it's unlikely that you'll find a compatible, internal Combo drive or SuperDrive for $25-$30.

  • Mechanical problem w/ internal combo drive - replacement needed

Combo drive on iMac appears to be failing - works only about 25% of the time. When a CD/DVD is loaded (open/close/tray work fine), the drive makes a lot of noise (clicking) then ejects after several tries to load. If it does load - DVD/CD play fine. This is a mechanical rather than software issue. The current internal drive is a SONY DVD RW DW-U10A. Where can a replacement internal combo drive be bought online compatible with this iMac? Other options/Recommendations? Thank you in Advance for any info you can provide.

Leslie, Welcome to Apple Discussions. You may wish to opt for an firewire external DVD-RW drive. Here's an example. This will be far easier to do; the internal upgrade is not for the faint hearted:

As and when you do it you may want to give consideration to boosting the HDD and 'factory' RAM at the same time. You must remember to replace the thermal paste as you close the iMac up.
As for Drive selection: xlr8yourmac runs a drive database. Click this link and enter DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW, iMac G4 and OS 10.4 in the relevant fields and click search. The Pioneer DVR110 seems popular and compatible.

  • Created An iDVD Project on A Combo Drive iMac -- Help!   Can I Transfer?

I created an iDVD project an iMac with a Combo Drive. As I sent the slideshow directly from iPhoto to iDVD, I did not know until I was ready to burn a 240 picture slideshow. Is there ANY way I can move the dvd project (~ 800mb) off the iMac where I created the project to move it to an iMac with a SuperDrive?

    Hi Grant
You can also burn a Disk Image to DVD via an ext. FW burner. Lacie makes a few models that work well on most macs. I built my own from a Pioneer 110 and an ADS 1394 Pyro enclosure. Not that expensive to make your own. Runs about half the price of a Lacie Ext. Burner and it requires No Drivers!

  • Hard Drive Replacement Help (G4 QS)

    Hello-
I've been reading some posts and there is a ton of knowledge here, so maybe somebody could share some info with me. My situation is this:
I'm running OS X 10.3.9 on a 733 Quicksilver G4. Every now and then I get the flashing question mark when starting up. In disk utility, the S.M.A.R.T. Status of my hard drive is "failing" written in red letters. This scares me a lot. The drive is the one that shipped from Apple, a Maxtor 5T060H6, 60 GB.
So I should replace it. I'd like to go the easiest route possible, and I gather that means simply getting another ATA drive. I think I understand the difference between ATA and SATA in so much as an ATA, since thats what I have now, will be easier (& cheaper) to install since the connectivity exists already (and I wouldn't have to worry about a PCI to SATA adapter?). I'm not worried about space (80 or 100GB would be fine) or serious performance upgrades. My goal is to keep this baby alive for a few more years till Apple lowers the price on G5s or I break down and get one.
So can I get any ATA drive thats under 120GB (my bootRom is 4.2.1f2)?
After that, I should be able to install it in terms of hardware without problem using the instructions on the Apple site, but does anyone have any good methods for moving the contents/files/ect...
Is it as easy as backing up to my external firewire drive, switching the hard drives, installing OS X from the CD, and then putting the files and apps on the fresh drive?
Thanks a million in advance for any insight.
    Matt
    G4 Quicksilver 733   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Matt,
The Maxtor will work. I like Seagates, but that's my pref. The 'Kit' means you get extra CD's, wires and stuff you don't need. An 'OEM' comes with just the HDD, nothing else and may be a bit cheaper:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144232
    or
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148022
    Add a step:
1a. Test FW as bootable immediately after CCC clone. See if it will boot your computer properly from the FW, then remove the old HD. Hold down the 'option' (alt) key at startup, select the FW, and boot. Just a double check.
Sure, use the old HDD as 'slave' but if it's saying 'failure' on S.M.A.R.T. I wouldn't put anything important on it. If you decide to pitch it, zero erase it with Disk Utility before you do.
Setting a HDD to Master/Slave/CS (Cable Select) is done with 'jumpers' on the backside of the HDD. There is a little device that you move/remove to configure the HDD using little pins. The schematic for jumping the pins is usually printed on the top of the HDD itself. Most are shipped as Master or CS, you just have to read the schematic and see what it is, change it if needed. Mac's don't like CS.

    Dave

  • Replacing combo drive with super drive

I think my iMac G5 needs a new optical drive, because I frequently get the error "failed to calibrate the laser power" when trying to burn from iTunes. (Yes, I've tried all the usual remedies: Different media, cleaning the lens, changing the burn rate... The Apple store genius say they see this "a lot," and it's probably the drive.)
My G5 has its original combo drive, but I've never burned a DVD and don't expect to with this machine. So my question is: Would there be any problem in replacing the combo with a super drive? Would the OS be able to "recognize" the different device and adjust for any differences?

You're right -- I had super and combo reversed. (Actually, the website I was looking at when I posted had them reversed.) I currently have the super drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845) that came with the iMac.
I can get an Apple combo drive replacement for $95 or a super for $145. There will not be any labor cost. So what I'm considering is replacing the super with a combo. I'm set on keeping it internal. My only concern would be that the change might cause some sort of system errors.

  • IMacs' combo drive doors are stuck closed

We have ten flat-panel G4 iMacs (700 MHz) at work, and at least five of them cannot open their optical drive doors. When the eject button is pressed, I can hear what I presume to be the motor trying to push the door open, but nothing happens. The first iMac to do this had it's combo drive replaced and now works, two others never stopped working, and I didn't check the remaining two iMacs. On one that is not working, I tried opening the drive using open firmware and by holding the mouse button down while restarting (as other threads have suggested), but I could still only hear the motor trying open the door. Having 6 drive doors all fail at the roughly the same time seems like a software problem rather than a hardware problems. (Everyone does their own updates, but I think all or most are running OS 10.4.11.) Does anyone have an idea about what to try next.

I'd try installing a fresh copy of 10.4 on an external firewire hard drive. Now boot the iMacs from that fresh copy of OS X. If the issue persists you can assume it's hardware.
If you use a finger nail to lower the white dome optical drive door do the trays open then?
My iMac G4 certainly still works fine since 10.4.11 was installed.

  • Combo Drive Problem - External Replacement - iDVD Help

Recently the Combo Drive on my flat panel iMac went bad. It no longer does anything. I see that this is a common senerio.
I just purchased an external CD/DVD multi recorder (HP 940 - USB). It works great went burning CD's (from iTunes) and Burn folders. However, whenever I try to burn from iDVD the computer doesn't seem to know that it is plugged in. It just ejects my internal combo drive drawer which doesn't work. Does anyone know how to get the iMac to recognize an external burner when burning from iDVD?
    Thanks.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Patchburn (link) driver might help but iDVD isn't the best for working with any old 3rd party burner.
It could also be a USB thing. Most iMac G4 have USB1.1 which is really too slow for proper DVD burning. If it has it connect the device via the much faster Firewire connection.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Can I replace my combo drive with a superdrive??

    hello all,
Can I replace my combo drive with a super drive? I see on some of the tech do it yourself pages the G5 17" original imac is supported for changing it out by your self. but how do I go about buying the superdrive...and from whome??
    thanks,
    marc

As to the DIY installation...I purchased an OWC Mercury 8x dual to replace my combodrive, but the installation directions that everyone refers to on the apple support site says nothing about removing the mounting cage to use in the replacement installation. Am I missing something here? Sure, I can remove the three mounting screws that holds the cage to the drive, but then I'm left with the welded bracket that does not seem to want to move. OWC support was no help at all. Is there a trick to this?

  • Need to replace combo drive without electrocuting myself

I want to replace my combo drive. I've purchased the proper replacement super drive, but guys at the Apple store warned me about the danger of electrocuting myself or frying my eMac because of the stored up power in the computer. Is this a real concern?
Can anyone help me with what to do so I don't fry myself or the computer.
    Thanks,

This discharge procedure has not been required for years, and has never been for eMacs.
I beg to differ. This is from page 13 of the *eMac Service Source Repair Manual*, published by Apple in 2002:
"Warning: This product contains high voltage and a high-vacuum picture tube. To prevent
injury, always review the Service Foundations: CRT Displays course for safety information.
Whenever the rear housing of the computer is removed and before replacing a module,
    you must
    1. Discharge the CRT (shown below) and remove the anode cap.
    2. Establish an ongoing ground by using a cable with alligator clips at both ends. Connect one end to the anode aperture, and connect the other end to the metal CRT frame (as shown below).
    3. With the CRT discharged and the ongoing ground in place wear a grounding wriststrap to prevent equipment damage from static electricity
Page 77 covers replacement of the optical drive; these preliminary steps are listed:
    Preliminary Steps
Before you begin, do the following:
    • Place the computer face down on an ESD mat.
    • Remove the user access door.
    • Remove the feet.
    • Remove the rear housing.
    • Discharge the CRT.
    • Remove the fan.
    • Remove the Faraday cage.
    • Remove the digital module assembly.
    • Remove the hard drive.
    • Remove the heatsink.
    • Remove the logic board.
Now, this manual covers the original eMac model. Perhaps later models of eMac do not have the same requirements. But until such documentation from Apple can be found, I think it foolish to not follow the guidelines set out in this manual, for all eMac models.
