  • Replacing combo drive with super drive

I think my iMac G5 needs a new optical drive, because I frequently get the error "failed to calibrate the laser power" when trying to burn from iTunes. (Yes, I've tried all the usual remedies: Different media, cleaning the lens, changing the burn rate... The Apple store genius say they see this "a lot," and it's probably the drive.)
My G5 has its original combo drive, but I've never burned a DVD and don't expect to with this machine. So my question is: Would there be any problem in replacing the combo with a super drive? Would the OS be able to "recognize" the different device and adjust for any differences?

You're right -- I had super and combo reversed. (Actually, the website I was looking at when I posted had them reversed.) I currently have the super drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845) that came with the iMac.
I can get an Apple combo drive replacement for $95 or a super for $145. There will not be any labor cost. So what I'm considering is replacing the super with a combo. I'm set on keeping it internal. My only concern would be that the change might cause some sort of system errors.

  • Define 'Combo' vs. 'Super' Drive ...

Sorry for such a basic question, but I just don't understand the terminology: If 'About this Mac' tells me that I have 'DVD+/-RW/R' and 'CD-R/RW,' do I have a 'Combo' or a 'Super' Drive? Thanks!

You have a SuperDrive. The difference is that the SuperDrive can burn DVDs, while the combo drive can only read them. Both drives can read and burn CDs.

  • I currently have a mbp with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I currently have a mbp 2.3 gighuz intel core 7 16 gig of ram with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

  • Combo Drive and Super Drive

My iBook is equipped with a combo drive. Can I replace it with a super drive? If I can, how? Should I take my iBook to an Apple repair center?

    Hi iBook fan
Yes you can replace your combo with a Superdrive. You can get it replaced at an Apple service centre, and yes, it is also possible to do it yourself, so it is all go!
To replace it you will need to dismantle your iBook, and that depends on how you feel about doing such a technical exercise, but it is possible.
Superdrives are available here for your iBook:

and an installation guide is available here:

  • Simple to upgrade from Combo Drive to Super Drive?

    Hi,
Apologies if this is a really basic question. I purchased a MacBook with a Combo Drive. I thought I had purchased a super drive. Is this a simple upgrade and can I do such an upgrade myself? I need the DVD-burning capacity.
    Thanks for your help.
    Jenny

I really think you're asking for trouble here. For starters, that is definitely not a user serviceable part. Memory? Yes. Hard Drive? Yes (finally). The optical drive, though, would require an authorized Apple dealer to perform the work. Otherwise, you'll void your warranty.
I don't know, though, if Apple will let you add a SuperDrive to that one. Honestly, I think it'll be easier if you just purchase an external DVD burner (check www.macsales.com for some cool options).

  • Weird imac sound is this hard drive or super drive?

hi I have this weird sound in my Imac and I was wondering why I keep on hearing this sound most of the time.
does this something to do with the hard drive? or the super drive? or both? or none?
I have tried resetting PRAM but the sound is still here
Does anyone have the same problem with mine? Any help on what to do to make this sound disappear?
like what troubleshooting do i have to do if applicable? this sound has been bothering me for months
my imac has a built in super drive
this sound is appearing randomly and frequently
I hear this sound even if my imac is in mute
    here is the video

    thank you very much

If it is 2010 imac it should boot into Apple Hardware Test, without the install disc if it has been upgraded to firmware version 1.8.
See if it generates any errors....

  • Upgrading combo drive to Super drive?

I have just bought a new iBook G4 12", which has the combo drive fitted in it.
I want to upgrade to a Superdrive as I really want to be able to burn DVDs with my iBook. Is this possible, and if so does anyone know how much this costs? (I live in the UK- in case that makes any difference).
    Many Thanks.

Celia, there are several options available to you and there are also several different vendors that will sell and or install these new drives in your iBook. Below is only one.

  • Changing from combo drive to super drive

Can my iBook G4 change from ComboDrive to SuperDrive, am using iBook 12 inch which has ComboDrive ( I think) but I want to burn DVDs, so is it possible to do this???

There are businesses that will do it for you, however your Apple warranty will be voided, and you have to pay a pretty penny in most cases.
Check out this place, as they seem to be pretty cheap and efficient. It should be noted that I haven't actually used this service before.

  • Is my hard drive or super drive dying?

    Hi
I have 2007 mac mini on OS X Tiger. The audio port is connected to my sound system. All these years good multimedia experience. Joy!
For the past 6 months the audio started failing. So I remove the cable from the port for some time (days) and reinsert and it would start working. Same problem repeats on and off. Presumed it is probably a loose contact between the plug and jack due to heating.
Last one week I started getting a scratching noise while playing DVDs. Ejected the DVD and the noise continued. So shut the computer off and the noise disappeared.
Restarted after few hours there was no noise. Inserted the DVD and the noise started.
That is the sequence of the problem.
Experts please give me a hand.

    Hi,
It sounds like your audio out is failing. You could get a USB audio unit such as the Edirol UA-1EX to overcome this and improve the audio quality.
The DVD in this model has always been a weak point. I would just get an external.
You could of course take it in to Apple, but that will probably cost more than my suggestions.
    Good luck!

  • Super drive won't recognize audio CDs but will burn

Anything I can do about this?
When Audio CDs are inserted I will hear the drive attempting to load through several cycles then spit it out. Tried multiple CDs and CDs do work in CD player. ALL are original audio CDs not copies, cloned or burned. ALL are clean.
BLANK CDs will seat and allow me to burn through iTunes.
ALL DVDs load and play fine.
I feel like this suddenly happened but can't remember the last time I inserted an audio CD. I completely reformated (clean install) my HD last Thanksgiving, updated all drivers and programs I could find. (not sure about firmware for super drive but I think I found it was the lastest) I swear the CD ROM worked.
Got a new iPod at Christmas and it works fine. Itunes works fine!
Original Mac Mini and updated SuperDrive..... Info here:
I replaced original CD ROM drive with Super Drive about 4 years ago. There has never been a hardware issue. Clean install fixed random CD burn problem.
    Super Drive:

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz

    Ditto for like 2 years.
I have the exact! same problem. A lot of people confuse similar drive problems with ours when diagnosing.
Here's what I have found out, although after 2 years, I haven't been able to completely fix it.
Something related to my login is corrupt or missing. If I log in under my wife's login, and insert the audio cd, everything is perfect. Then if I switch back to my login, everything is perfect for again. However every cd must still be inserted under her login.
I really with this additional post will help somebody who has had this actually answer. It isn't a drive problem, or itunes problem.... and clearly a complete re install of osx isn't necessary.

  • Can I swap out my Combo drive for a Super drive?

    Hey guys,
I have 1GHz G4 iMac Dual USB & was wondering if I could replace the Combo Drive with a "Super" Drive.
    Any ideas?

    Ben,
You can do it, but do you really want to? I think an external is a better option. Having two DVD drives is a huge advantage. It makes copying DVDs a snap.
Here's the link to how to change the drive. It will give you a look at what your in for if you attempt it.

  • Internal combo to super drive?

just got a macbook as a present---it has a combo drive---is there anyway to have a super drive put in? darn!

...or you could just keep the combo drive and buy an external DVD burner for a fraction of the cost of the Apple superdrive. The superdrive isn't that "super" anyway. It won't burn Dual Layer and it's, by far, the fussiest DVD drive I've ever used.
    Something to think about...

  • Combo Drive vs. Super Drive

    Hello,
What is the difference between the combo drive for the entry level macbook and the super drive for the 2.16GHz macbook. I cant find it anywhere and I think it will be a factor in my decision on which to purchase. Does it have more benefits other than being "super" such as speed or dvd burning capabilities?
    Thank you so much.

Ok that resolved the cd/dvd question, but is there a difference in speed? Why is the combo drive X24 and the super drive X8. What do those numbers represent. Also, is there a difference in the way they load. i.e. like the new imacs the you just slide the disc in.
