Combo Drive won't accept CD's

I just got off the phone with AppleCare and they have told me that my Combo Drive seems to think that there is a cd in the drive. I know that there is not a cd in the drive. I haven't inserted any cd into the drive at all. I tried to when I got home but this is how I found out that there was a problem. The disk goes as far in as possible but there a latch (which engages when another cd is in the drive) that is providing resistance. I have tried to reset the firmware with the guy over the phone but still no luck... The next option is to take it in but I don't have time to leave my iBook sitting in a shop for a week. HAS ANYONE EVER HAD THIS PROBLEM AND CAN THEY PLEASE HELP ME. I IMPLORE YOU TO HELP ME. This is really bothering me as it is my first hardware malfunction EVER. Thank you so much.

  • My cd drive won't accept a cd or dvd

My cd drive won't accept a cd or dvd? how do i fix this problem there is no cd or dvd in the drive

A Mac Pro?  The Mac Pro has a different type of optical drive (compared to an iMac and most other Macs).  It is full size, with a "tray" that comes out where you place the disc, instead of a slot where you insert the disc.  It is also a standard component, not a special part like the one in the iMac.
The Mac Pro (before the newest version that's about to go on sale) is designed to make swapping components relatively easy.  Apple provides these instructions
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA919/en_US/Mac_Pro_Early2009_Optical_Dr ive_DIY.pdf
This web page has more info
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/faq/mac-pro-how-to-install-second- optical-drive-bluray.html#mac_pro_optical_drive_instructions
So, you can actually go to "Best Buy" and buy a replacement drive for a Mac Pro.

  • My cd drive won't accept any cd

My cd drive won't accept any CDs or DVDs it's like there's something blocking it from entering, and it does these funny nose everytime I turn on my Mac book pro......... This problem started today after I was trying to insert a disk in, at first it was accepting the disk then spitting it out after 2 time it just wouldn't accept it anymore....... I have a Mac book pro mid 2010 processor 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo Memory 4gb 1067 MHz ddr3 software OS X 10.8.2 (12c60)

Are you sure that there's nothing stuck in the optical drive? Try the below eject methods to see what happens.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Combo drive won't play CD's

after recently (seemingly) ironing out the bugs in iTunes 7.0.1, my combo drive won't play commercial CD's. MP3 CD's play in iTunes just fine and it will burn CD's. but both the finder (copying) and iTunes freeze when i try to play commercial CD's. when trying to copy aiff files to harddrive as a workaround, i get the following error message:
"some data on (in the file) is unreadable or unwritable. error (-34)"
i suspect the problem is with the drive itself as an external CD-DVD firewire writer has no problem and works with iTunes just fine.
is the combo drive dying? is there a software patch somewhere? is the problem caused by iTunes? quicktime?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

As in the posting of Oct 3 from regmetc, following
the install of iTunes 7.0.2 and QT 7.1.3, my combo
drive won't play most commercial CD's. Most curious
is that I have so far found ONE commercial CD in my
library that plays just fine, but haven't had the
time to check all of the 200+ cds I own. It will burn
CD's and read DVDs. but iTunes will freeze when I try
    to play commercial a CD.
An external CD firewire writer has no problem and
    works with iTunes just fine.
Booting from an external backup drive with an earlier
cloned OSX 10.4.6 and iTunes 6.0.2 did not cure the
    problem.
Hardware test shows no hardware problems.
as a followup ... did extensive hardware testing and software re-loading and found that there was nothing wrong with the hardware ... everything worked just fine if I returned to OS 10.3.9 or earlier and itunes 6 or earlier. I found I could run OS 10.4.0 through 10.4.8 and have the cd drive work fine if I stayed at itunes 4, but once I changed up to 6 or 7 I lost the drives ability to read music cds. Data cds are not affected and DVDs play just fine.
I am now assuming that there is some code change whereas OS 10.4 and itunes 6 or 7 doesn't provide the proper driver for the cd combo drive. I have a cd rom drive in another laptop that is not affected and any external cd drive seems to be fine. It would be curious to know if a different enternal drive like a superdrive would work.

  • My disk drive won't accept disks at all, not even a little to spit them out.

My disk drive will not accept disks at all...there is no disk stuck in there, but nothing happens when I try to insert a disk into my disk drive.
The disk won't even go in the drive a little bit...it's like something is blocking the drive, but I know nothing is in there.
Any ideas on what this may be or what to do to correct it?

It sounds like the lens on your optical drive is dirty. Use a cleaning DVD or wrap a microfiber cloth around a credit card and carefully slide it in and out a few times.

  • DVD drive won't accept disks since Snow Leopard upgrade

I just upgraded my Macbook to Snow Leopard, and now I can't insert disks into my optical drive. It just won't accept them. Help!
    Thanks in advance!

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
No guarantee this will work but it's a start.

  • My disc drive won't accept discs as if there's a disc in it

    Hello,
I am 99.9% sure there is no disc drive, yet my mac won't accept a disc. I went to Finder>Devices and sure enough, I don't see a disc icon. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Suggestions?

  • My Combo drive won't eject & I've tried all the fixes on the support page.

The Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" is stuck in my Combo drive. It does not show up on my desktop and will not eject.
    I've tried:
    - holding down the eject button while I start the machine
    - holding down the trackpad button while I start the machine
    - resetting the PRAM/NVRAM
    - resetting the PMU
I've also changed my Prefs to recognize music cds (for some reason it was set to "ignore") and I've tried all of the above fixes with the power cord in AND out.
I've downloaded a support patch from '03 that was supposed to get at this very issue, but the installer tells me I don't need the update, and anyway the support site says that the patch won't install when there's a disk still stuck in the drive (which I'd guess makes it a bit of a useless patch for many people, at least on the first go-round).
I understand from some online forums that there are other ways to get at this - through the Terminal and through Open Firmware - but I haven't found any postings that step you through those solutions, and I'm not skilled enough to figure them out myself.
Can anyone tell me how to deal with this?
    Thanks.
    12-inch Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Update:
I found the instructions for the open-firmware fix on the Apple site (not sure why they don't link to this from the other support page. you think you've read everything they have to offer and then there's another solution floating out there on the site).
I tried it, and that did't work either. When I type in "eject cd" I get back the message
    can't open EJECT device.
    So.... I'm still looking.

  • Lacie 2Big Network Drive won't Accept a DHCP address from Time Capsule

    Good evening all.
I have 2 of these Lacie 2Big network drives. One accepts a DHCP address from my Time capsule and the other does not, giving itself a self assigned IP address instead. It does accept a manually assigned address though. The settings on both the Lacie drives are identical as far as I can tell and they both run the latest 2.0.6 software. I tried hard reset on the Time capsule, and swapping the ethernet cables over on the two Lacie drives but to no avail. The log on the drive that won't accept a DHCP address says it is timing out after 45 seconds and setting a self assigned address. The drive that won't accept DHCP is an older drive with software updated to 2.0.6, but it had the problem with the older software as well. Does anyone have a similar experience and / or solution ?
    regards
    Shaun

Also tried resetting PRAM, no luck.
What does work is if I use Manual DHCP mode and specify the router's address (192.168.0.1). Then everything works but not on Automatic, which worked for a long time.

  • Combo drive won't read CDs or CD-Rs or CD-RWs

my combo drive used to read CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
now it can't read any media but DVDs.
    why is this so?
please help. i have tried all brands of the CD medias but still it won't work. the drive keeps on spitting out the CDs.
    thanks.

    Hi.
I had the same problem with a Combo drive in a PowerBook G4 12 inch model.
It ended up being repaired under warranty.
You could try several things to troubleshoot it:
    1. Zap PRAM
    2. Reinstall system software
    3. Check the drive using a utility application
    4. Check your System Prefs under CDs and DVDs.
If these or other techniques do not solve the problem, then it is most likely a hardware issue, and your drive will need fixing. The Combo Driive in my "Little AL" went bad after nearly 3 years of use, but just prior to warranty expiration.

  • Sept. 2006 17" 1.83GHz Intel iMac Combo drive won't read discs...

When I insert a CD (audio or data), the drive spits the disc out after about 15-20 sec.  Nothing shows up.  Nothing said.  The disc just comes back out.  Hardware Info shows the drive is there:
    MATSHITACD-RW  CW-8124:
      Model:          MATSHITACD-RW  CW-8124
      Revision:          DACH
      Serial Number:
      Detachable Drive:          No
      Protocol:          ATAPI
      Unit Number:          0
      Socket Type:          Internal
      Low Power Polling:          Yes
      Power Off:          No
But nothing else.  Doesn't show the serial number either.  Can't find any tools to test the drive with.  A friend suggests I remove the drive and try manually cleaning the lens (Using CD/DVD cleaning disc did nothing).  But I don't want to go to all that trouble, if there isn't a more than likely chance of it working.  Too much disassembly/reassembly effort  I'd rather just replace the drive while I'm in there.
I don't have the original discs that came with this system, so I can't run AHT.  I'm told it won't tell me anything either, just that the drive is there, which the Hardware Info already says.
Should I try to go in and manually clean the lens or just replace the drive?  Has anyone else manually cleaned their lens and had their drive work or is replacement really the only option at this point?
I'm told I should just get a USB external CD/DVD drive and be done with it... but I'd like to restore this computer to fully working order, if possible.

The Early iMac's are one of the most difficult iMac's to open and work on. Another problem given it's age, is that display cables and other connections are very brittle and it is very likely that more harm than good will come from working on it.
On that note: I suggest finding and using an OS X compatible External tray loading CD/DVD drive for several reasons.
    1. External CD/DVD drives are faster and more reliable than slim-line super drives.
    2. For about the same cost or less, a good External CD/DVD drive should also give you the ability to burn CDs and DVDs.
    3. Using an External CD/DVD drive is a lot easier than ripping into the iMac and replacing the internal drive.
Personally I am happily using an older LG GE24LU20 with both my Early Core Duo and Mac Mini, but others here have also recommended that the GP10 DVD and Blu-ray, the LaCie's and the OWC FireWire drives are all very good solution for a busted internal super or combo drive.

  • Combo Drive Won't Eject Discs

My 1G MacBook that just came home from being repaired by Apple won't eject my installation disc. I'm downloading updates for my MacBook at the same time but I don't know if that's why it won't eject. Is there a problem with my combo drive?

Never mind. I was using a program that required the disc and I thought the installation was done.

  • Combo Drive Problem: Not Accepting Discs

Recently, I swapped out a broken Matshita drive.
The new slot-loading optical drive will not accept discs.
What confounds me is that the drive (seems to) show up in the System Profiler:
    MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8124:
    Firmware Revision: DZ13
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
    Media: No
If it is a power connection issue, would the device appear in the System Profiler?
    Anyone have a theory?
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    John,
I agree with JeremyP, it sounds like your combo drive has serious problems & needs to be replaced. My guess is misaligned laser. If you live near an Apple Store, take it there to have one of the geniuses look at it. I had to have mine replaced when it rejected more DVDs than it accepted. It's refusal to accept CDs was probably not far off.
