Combo drive won't burn CDs or read DVDs
My finace renectly purchased a new iBook G4 in early October, and the combo drive has never been able to burn CDs or read DVDs. Is this a common problem with iBooks? Is it a software problem or a hardware problem? How do we go about getting it fixed without Applecare? Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Zach

Hi, Zach. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have found the G3 Dual USB iBook Forum, but I can help you out a bit. The warranty on the iBook gives you free phone support for any and all issues for 90 days. Use it. For full information on the warranty in plain language, check out Rachel's helpful FAQ Is phone support and warranty service free?
I recommend that your fiancée buy AppleCare. If you have any problems whatsoever with a new iBook within the first year of its eligibility, it is foolhardy to not purchase AppleCare if it is available where you live.

[ ERROR: SPECIFIED ATTACHMENT MISSING ]I downloaded the Nero BurnRights from the link in your reply. I installed it. After I installed it and re-booted my PC, there was no Nero group to add users to. Or if there was I can't find a way of adding users to the Nero group.
If I look in the system event log, there are lots of times where the cdrom shows and error. If I double click on the event entry, it says "The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block " . If I look this up, it suggests that the drive may need to be cleaned. So I cleaned it with a CD cleaning disc. It made no differance.

Combo drive won't recognize CDs or DVDs
My original iMac won't show Cds or DVDs on the desktop. When I insert one, it says it needs to be formatted.
Probably need, a new Cd reader, right?
Can I install this myself? Cost?Sorry for my late reply. I kept forgetting! Thank you for your responses (and for your helpful links, mrtotes). The more I read about internal DVD writers vs. external DVD writers, the more my head spun. Some user reviews expressed the opinion that the small form factor DVD burners (internal, slot loading) were the devil's peripherals and that they had a much easier time of it with external tray loading ones. Others wondered about buffer underrun (or is it overrun?) with externals.
While I was mulling this over, my service provider had already ordered and received the new combo drive for my iMac; so it looks like I'll be going with an external DVD burner (just as he recommended).
Here are a few links I found helpful:

Apple Discussion from June 2006 about internal and external DVD writers.
One person wrote, "Internal drives seem more reliable and are also far cheaper." But several responded with their experiences of external drives that work "flawlessly" (according to one poster, describing his Sony DRX-720UL).

Combo drive won't accept CDs or CD-R/CD-RWs
my iBook's combo drive suddenly would not accept CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs. it can't recognize the disk and automatically spits them out. it can't burn CD-Rs as well. it can only read DVD, DVD-Rs. why is this so?
is apple planning on solving this problem? and compensatin for those who have purchased the defective combo drives? any suggestions on what to do to solve the problem?
thanks.Hi Michael,
Here is what Knowledge Base has to say (article).
I hope that helps,
Jon

Ok, Im having trouble with my combo drive on my iBook g4.. The drive is reading and ripping discs like normal but when ever I try to burn a disc, be it iTunes or from a burn folder it initializes and then just ejects the CD and and says "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry"
What's going on???
I did a software update right before this happened.. Could that be a problem?

My BD combo drive won't burn to any type of RW media
I have a Satellite L770-BT4N22 laptop with a Mat**bleep**a BD-CMB UJ141EF BD-DVD +/- RW DL optical drive. It will not burn data discs or DVD-video to any type of RW discs, either CD or DVD. It burns audio to CD-RW with no problem. I have tried both Maxell and TDK discs. When I try, I get a message similar to "bad media, try with another disc" or "incompatible media". All of my system drivers are up-to-date. I have tried running the "drive won't read or write to disc" wizard on the Microsoft support site and it states that the media is "unrecordable" when it tries to write to it. The drive burns data and video to +/- R discs without a hiccup. Any ideas?
Try these suggestions if there are any you haven't:
What can I do if my CD or DVD drive doesn't work properly in Windows 7?

Matshita DVD-R UJ 857-E (unable to burn CDs but reading DVDs and CDs)
I have had the macbook and burner for about three years.
I am unable to burn cds. When I attempt to do so in iTunes or Toast the error message reads "please insert a recordable cd". I have used the same cds to burn on other computers so I believe this is a problem with my drive and not the cds I'm trying to record to.
I am able to burn DVDs in Toast.
Any ideas? I'm looking for a driver right now...I truly believe this is a software issue. I changed the system settings of the CD/DVD (system profiler) of "when inserting a blank CD to 'open finder' " ( u can use 'ask me' but I didn't have that option) instead of opening iTunes. Once the CD was mounted I was able to burn to the disk in iTunes as well as iPhoto. I was unable to that when I just inserted the disk from the program when prompted.

I have an iBook G4 purchased in 1/05. I've never really had a reason to burn a cd until recently when I purchased a digital camera. I loaded the pictures into iPhoto and tried to burn them to a cd. Everything seemed to be going fine. There was a message that the burn had been completed. My disk was ejected. Then an error message appeared, "The burn to the TEAC DV 24SL failed. The device failed to respond properly. Unable to recover or retry." There is no data on the disk and other attempts with other disks produced the same result.
I don't use iPhoto but you might try to do a burn from the Finder to see if your problems are iPhoto related or burning in general, stick a blank CD-R in the drive and then drag some documents/files onto the CD icon, when you're ready, burn the disc (under the File menu).

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago. I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning. I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero. No help. I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim. No help. Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates. I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help. I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too. I would really rather get the drive I have working.Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

Cd/dvd drive won't burn a disc,although it will read a cd
i have a compaq cq62 with windows 7 home premium with the cd/dvd drive won't burn a disc, although it will read a cd
Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Windows 7
Check if the drive will now burn a disc.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked. When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ). Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now able to burn a disc.
Regards,
DP-K

Combo drive reads cds, stopped reading dvds
My combo drive won't read DVD movies. However, it does recognize CD's. I get an error message with DVD discs that reads: "DISC INSERTION The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
I took my iBook to the Apple store yesterday and they archived and re-installed my OS. This process made the drive work, but this morning it gave me the same error again.
Suggestions anyone??"I took my iBook to the Apple store yesterday and they archived and re-installed my OS. This process made the drive work, but this morning it gave me the same error again."
maw87, welcome!
Did you use the same DVDs that worked yesterday when you got the failure this morning? Or are we talking different discs?
Are these commercially manufactured DVDs or home-burnt? -
after recently (seemingly) ironing out the bugs in iTunes 7.0.1, my combo drive won't play commercial CD's. MP3 CD's play in iTunes just fine and it will burn CD's. but both the finder (copying) and iTunes freeze when i try to play commercial CD's. when trying to copy aiff files to harddrive as a workaround, i get the following error message:
"some data on (in the file) is unreadable or unwritable. error (-34)"
i suspect the problem is with the drive itself as an external CD-DVD firewire writer has no problem and works with iTunes just fine.
is the combo drive dying? is there a software patch somewhere? is the problem caused by iTunes? quicktime?
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)As in the posting of Oct 3 from regmetc, following
the install of iTunes 7.0.2 and QT 7.1.3, my combo
drive won't play most commercial CD's. Most curious
is that I have so far found ONE commercial CD in my
library that plays just fine, but haven't had the
time to check all of the 200+ cds I own. It will burn
CD's and read DVDs. but iTunes will freeze when I try
to play commercial a CD.
An external CD firewire writer has no problem and
works with iTunes just fine.
Booting from an external backup drive with an earlier
cloned OSX 10.4.6 and iTunes 6.0.2 did not cure the
problem.
Hardware test shows no hardware problems.
as a followup ... did extensive hardware testing and software re-loading and found that there was nothing wrong with the hardware ... everything worked just fine if I returned to OS 10.3.9 or earlier and itunes 6 or earlier. I found I could run OS 10.4.0 through 10.4.8 and have the cd drive work fine if I stayed at itunes 4, but once I changed up to 6 or 7 I lost the drives ability to read music cds. Data cds are not affected and DVDs play just fine.
I am now assuming that there is some code change whereas OS 10.4 and itunes 6 or 7 doesn't provide the proper driver for the cd combo drive. I have a cd rom drive in another laptop that is not affected and any external cd drive seems to be fine. It would be curious to know if a different enternal drive like a superdrive would work. -
I have an external Plextor PX-712UF CD-RR-RW+RW/DVD-R+R-RWRW. It plays CDs and DVDs fine but it won't burn CDs or DVDs on my G3 iMac It encounters an error at the beginning of the burning of the disk. It works on a G4 iMac that a family member has. I allow have a Que! Fire CD burner that works fine on the iMac G3. I am using OS X 10.3 and Toast 6 Lite.
Hi
What interface are you using to connect it?
That error code in Tiger is often related to the Finder, relaunching the Finder can fix it. In Panther though, I don't know if the same is true, can't hurt to try, however.
If you just purchased it, I would strongly recommend returning it for a drive from a vendor with a higher standard of Mac-support, such as LaCie, or a vendor such as OWC, that sells a variety of cased-drives. -
Optical drive won't burn: Macbook Pro after Mavericks update
I have just updated my OSX to Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, late I know but I was trying to avoid any software conflicts. My Optical Drive can't burn either CD or DVD. It plays them and recognises them but won't burn. Error message:
The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
I have tried compressed air, restarting, updating software and have looked through this forum for possible solutions but everything I've tried hasn't worked.
I burnt a DVD yesterday with no issue and then updated my OSX last night and know it won't work.
Please help, on the verge of a meltdown with a heavy deadline looming
VThe built-in camera shouldn't work in Image Capture which is for use with a photographic camera or a scanner. As for Skype you might check if you have the most recent version. If you do, then I would contact the developers about the problem. It's clear that the camera is working with Photo Booth and FaceTime. That suggests there is no problem with Mavericks.
