    Thanks

It should be able to handle commercially-made movie double-layer DVDs.

  • Could iBook G4's combo drive read DVD+RW discs?

I want to know whether it can read these ones or not.

    Nie Hau!
To answer your question, yes. A combo drive CAN read DVD+RW disks. It cannot write to them, however. You would need a Super Drive for that.

  • Combo drive - ejects DVDS

The combo drive for my Powermac G4 (mirror drive doors, running 10.4.7) will play and import CDs just fine, but won't recognize DVDs. I've tried putting in various movies, burned DVDs, etc. and it just spins for a while and spits them back out. They never appear on the desktop and DVD player doesn't open.
What's wrong? How can I fix it?
    Thanks,

I read elsewhere on the site about resetting the PRAM and that solved the problem. Drive functions normally now.

  • Combo Drive Plays DVDs, reads data CDs, ejects commerical CDs...

My Combo Drive currently will not:
    -burn CDs
    -play music (commercial) CDs
    -load software (commercial) CDs
    It will:
    -play DVDs
-recognize and read previously burned (non-commerical) data CDs
Commercial CDs are not recognized--the drive struggles with them for a minute or so and then ejects them.
I've read of similar problems elsewhere, but my situation seems a bit different because the computer will recognize and read previously burned data CDs, so I don't think it's a problem with the lasers. What is different about commercial music and software CDs? Also, what would that have to do with problems burning data? Could this be a software issue?
    Thanks

  • Combo Drive read DVD but refuse to read CD

I have the problem that I can use the combo drive only with dvd when I try to insert a cd it will not recognise and the drive eject the cd. I have checked al kinds of cd´s and I have also tried to burn a cd but without sucess. I have also reseted the PRAM but also without sucess.
Is there´s a chance not to buy a new drive ?
The Ibook G4 800 Mhz is just 2 years old and handled with care so I can not see any fault which causes the problem.

The drive was damaged I have bought a new one. bad luck just 2 years old and not used very often. Since 8 Month I have an IMac G5 and since now I have the same problem with a superdrive but good luck because I still have warranty from Apple. It seems that the slotin drives are not the robust ones.
Does other users have the same expirience ?

  • Disc drive ejecting dvd media

the drive in my Imac G5 2.1Ghz will not hold blank media disc in it they don't show in the finder i place them in to the computer slot drive less then a few minutes it ejects the disc. I have tried to rest the smu/pmu , the PRam , i even went as far to reset the nvram still the drive will not hold the blank media .It will however read pervious burnt dvd disc of the same carousel and pressed dvds.
any thoughts of what other step i should try would be appreciated
    the Imac is running 10.4.11

    It's DUST, yup, dust.
I was having the same problem no matter what type of media - movies would sometimes eject and I would put it back in a few times, then it would work.
Anyway, solution, clean it. You can use air, but that is not as good as what I did.
For $10.00 at best buy, you can buy this disk that has tiny cleaning brushes on it. Its called OptiDisc by memorex. At first it didn't play, and ejected of course, so, I put it back in and opened itunes, it's also an audio disc that will clean and set up audio and test it.
I did this last night after buying some DL Verbatium DVD's that kept ejecting, then I tried -R same thing, after the cleaning section, takes less than 2 minutes, every time I put in a blank DVD I got the what would you like to do.
It has nothing to do with the OS. I have a MB Pro with Tiger 10.4 as well as external HD with 3 partitions, with two bootable, one is 10.5.6 the other 10.5.8, before cleaning, all three OS'es ejected them, after cleaning it now works fine. Good for 30 uses and they recommend after ever 50 hours but since my macbook is one year old, I am thinking it will probably last for a long long time.
Hope this helps you as like me, you probably thought you had to get it fixed and even with Apple care you would be without your mac for days.
This fixed my problem and I bet it fixes a lot of peoples, especially dust, it does collect.
    Thanks!

  • PB G4 Combo Drive Writer intermittant failure

    Hi-
Using Toast 6 (have successfully for some time now) my writen CD's (data) fail to verify, although they mount. The problem started last night, after an intensive burning session (6 disks in a row). This morning, after an all night shutdown, verification still fails.
After the first year of ownership, I had the drive replaced due to a writing problem. This one has worked fine for years. DVD's play fine. CD's boot, I have restarted, let the machine cool, reset PMU, restarted Toast.
I watch alot of Netflix DVD's on the road and am wondering if the lens might be dirty. I am due for a new machine, so I don't want to replace the drive just because it won't write. Currently it's the only wat I have to burn archival CD's
    Any suggestions? TIA

Many people find the ifixit.com online repair guides worth looking at.
If the drive worked again after the cleaning (after it had stopped working before that), and if you're going to write off the drive anyway, you may want to try giving it a manual cleaning. I remember at least one person who posted that actually opening up the drive and doing a manual cleaning of the lense/s was the only thing that worked for him. Not for the faint of heart though.

  • What DVDs can combo drive read?

Can my Powerbook G4 12 inch combo drive read DVD+r? DVD+r dual layer? DVD-r dual layer?
I've found conflicting information online. Thanks.

This subject matter can get quite confusing. Companies have confused the "Dual Layer" term and crossed their wires doing so. I have posted detailed info in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5095860
Also, if you have the 12-inch model that I do, the 1.5GHz SuperDrive edition, then it reads both DVD-R and DVD+R discs. (A DVD±R drive). It will read DVDs with two sides to it, a side A and side B disc, you know, the ones with no artwork on the disc that look like bootleg DVDs but aren't?
It won't read discs that have two writable layers in it.

  • Combo Drive DVD formats supported

Specs say the combo drive supports DVD-ROM. Does this mean it can support DVD-R and/or DVD+R?
    Greg

OK, I just had a friend with a PC burn a DVD-R for me and when I put it in my mini with a combo drive, the disk mounted on my desktop and I could see the 4 .mpg files within, BUT I couldn't play the DVD on my mini.
    Anyone know why?

  • Pre12 – unable to burn AVCHD to DVD media

I'm using Pre 12 with Windows 8, editing AVCHD video, and want to burn AVCHD to DVD disk media (to play on a Blu-ray player).  However, whenever I try Pre12 shows “media not present” as status, despite having a blank DVD in the drive.  But, simply changing from AVCHD to DVD works fine.
Some background:  I’ve been a Premiere Elements user since V1 and after purchasing a HD camera several years ago I’ve burned many short HD videos on DVD media s using Pre 10 and 11 AVCHD format option.  However, that was before converting to a new computer and installing Pre12.
My new computer is a Dell XPS 8700, Win dows 8 64 bit, with an internal Blu-ray Combo Drive (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD). The drive shows in Windows Devices as “HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH20N”.  It claims to read and write DVD media in either the plus or minus types.  I’ve been using TDK single side DVD + media. I've reported the problem to Dell Technical Support without success.
So, I don’t know if the problem is with my hardware, media, or a bug in Pre12, and would greatly appreciate advice.
    Thanks in advance

    1. Yes, HD or SD video will burn (in DVD format) to DVD media on either internal or external optical drive.  The reinstall of Pre 12.0 solved that problem.
    2. There was no change to results when attempting to burn AVCHD to DVD media.  The internal optical drive continues to show "media not present", while the external drive shows "ready"
    3. There was no change to results when burning to Blu-ray which continutes to operate correctly - the external drive shows "ready" (and burns are still successful).  Note that the internal drive can only write DVD media so isn't shown by Pre 12 for this task.
Below is revised table of results:
    Source Video
    SD
    SD
    SD
    HD
    HD
    HD
    Task:
    Burn DVD
    Burn AVCHD (to DVD media)
    Burn Blu-ray (to Blu-ray Media)
    Burn DVD
    Burn AVCHD (to DVD media)
    Burn Blu-ray (to Blu-ray Media)
    Status/Result
    Optical Drive E:
    Internal DVD Writer
    Ready
    Media not present
    Burner loacation N/A
    Ready
    Media not present
    Burner loacation N/A
    Optical Drive F:
    External USB 3 Blu-ray  Writer
    Ready
    Ready
Incompatible disc (with DVD media), Ready with Blu-ray media)
    Ready

So, ok to uninstall and reinstall Windows driver for internal burner?

  • DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive Will Not Read Or Write To Any Media

I  have an HP ZT1130, running XP SP3.  It has a Toshiba SD-R2102 DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive that will not read or write to any media.  I don't get any error messages.  The drive is present in MY Computer & Device Manager indicates it is working properly.  When I place any disk in the drive, I get a message to "insert a disk".  I have already uninstalled & reinstalled the device, removed the "high & low filters" in the registry, operating from a "clean boot state", run a registry cleaner.  I am currently using Microsoft Media Player 11.  I have run out of things to check, I hope someone has some answers.
