Combo (or Super) drives for ibook clamshell.

Hi, I've had some good success on upgrading ibook indigos with a slot loading Matshita/Panasonic CW-8123 DVD/CD RW drive. I have pictures and some advice if anyone wants to try this upgrade. I saw some good deals on a Matshita/Panasonic CW-8123-C that I believe will work as I think it is just a newer version (I never knew what -B vs -C means, does anyone). I also saw a Pioneer DVR-K05PD dvd/cdrw drive that I believe has been used in Mac Mini...anyone know if this will work in clamshell (with or without Patchburn). And last, can a dvd burner, like panasonic or pioneer superdrive burners work in a clamshell? Any insights appreciated...Rick

You can put a DVD burner in a 300Mhz Clamshell, but it is impossible to view DVDs. Apple DVD player won't accept the 4MB video card (8MB minimum required). The vlc freeware player works, but there are too many skipped frames, you can't hardly watch the scene.
When you want to do a serious tuneup for your tangerine or blueberry - get yourself a firewire logicboard (366 or 466 Mhz), drill a new hole in the appropriate place of the bottom case (if you want to make use of the firewire port). Of course you can also mix colors of the clamshell case, so a graphite, key lime or indigo bottom case with a new logic board will also do the job, that would be much easier.

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

  • Spell Checking on AppleWorks 5 for iBook Clamshell (original) Tangerine

I am a first time Mac user. I am using an iBook clamshell Tangerine color. I can't seem to work the spell checking in the Appleworks 5.0. I click onto it from either the toolbar or in the menu and it does not allow my select the document I want spell checked. Does anyone have a solution? I love my unit, it is so retro but a little antiquated. Help!!!
iBook (original) Clamshell Tangerine   Mac OS 9.2.x   Refurbished unit

Before you update your RAM and OS you may want to verify what your firmware is. You need to have a firmware of 4.1.7 to be able to use a 512mb ram stick as well as increase funtionality in OS X, see this article....
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128
This update (if you need it) must be done on a Bootable OS9 drive, NOT the cd's.
If you need help confirming your firmware in OS9, please post back. If I can help I will try and post back then.
    Hope that helps...

  • Internal combo to super drive?

just got a macbook as a present---it has a combo drive---is there anyway to have a super drive put in? darn!

...or you could just keep the combo drive and buy an external DVD burner for a fraction of the cost of the Apple superdrive. The superdrive isn't that "super" anyway. It won't burn Dual Layer and it's, by far, the fussiest DVD drive I've ever used.

  • Download iTunes 1 for iBook "Clamshell G3"

Is there like a website where I can download an older version of iTunes (like iTunes 1) for my clamshell iBook ?

It really looks like Apple has pulled all the links for anything that old.  They do list iTunes 2.0.4 which is actually for OS9, but the download link for that is broken.  Otherwise the nearest I can find is iTunes 7.5 which is what I run under OSX 10.4 so I think it may be a biit beyond 10.0.4.  You can write to Apple and ask them but they will most likely just answer you with a bland, "That version is no longer supported and no longer available."  If you're really determined then let me know and we can maybe find another solution.

  • Word Processor for Ibook Clamshell G3

Is there a word processor I can use with my Ibook Clamshell. It could be freeware or basic. I need it for memos, notes, letters and plan to write a book. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

WordPerfect is a word processing application. At the height of its popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was the de facto standard word processor, but has since been eclipsed in sales by Microsoft Word. WordPerfect version 3.5e for Mac has been made freeware by Corel, and can be downloaded here http://main.system7today.com/software/wordperfect/wordperfect.html . It is a great, free alternative to Microsoft Word!

  • G4 as external drive for iBook

    Hi
I have my old and trusted G4 tower and would like to set it us as the external drive for my iBook, so that I can store on the G4 all my iphotos and itune libraries as well as backups, and do without the monitor and keyboard.
(the laptop then ideally connected to the stereo....)
i like to come home, plug in the laptop and access the G4 via the laptop...
how do I do that? i got firewire lead which I used to transfer files but I still need a keyboard to access the G4 when I do that.
hope this makes sense. it's clear in my head what I want to do, but not sure I can explain properly...
    many thanks
    Resi

I think you might be better off either buying an external HD, or just buying an external enclosure and putting the HD from the Tower into that. As far as I know, there is no way to boot the G4 into "Target Mode" without a keyboard.

  • How do I burn an iMovie using a bus super drive for mac book pro

I have a new mac book pro using the maverick operating system.  I also have a ubs super drive.  I am trying to burn an i movie to the dvd to be shown on a dvd player. It is saving as a mp4 and will not play in the dvd player.  How do I save the movie to play it in a dvd player.
    Thanks

For that you need iDVD. If you don't have it:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • RAM replacement for Ibook Clamshell

    Hi,
I have just bought an Ibook G3 clamshell (300mhz) for my boyfriend.
After having updated from OS9 to OS10.3, I find myself with no memory left to install other programs.
I know how to replace the ram for this model but I'm not sure what model or what capacity to choose as different websites contradict themselves.
    Does anyone around here know?
    Thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
What is the hard drive capacity, and how much space remains available on it?
Do you have the original system CDs that came with the iBook when it was new?
They would include Mac OS 8.6.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook.html
You didn't say anything about having updated the firmware on the iBook, and that needs to be done before upgrading to Mac OS X. You have to do the firmware update from Mac OS 9.1 installed on the computer's hard drive.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395?viewlocale=en_US
(Maybe a previous owner updated the firmware.)
With sufficient hard drive space and Mac OS X 10.3.9, you should be able to use Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac:

Replacing the hard drive is not an easy thing to do:

  • Best, cheapest external drive for ibook?

    HELLO
I am running out of space on my ibook... 99 % of that being photos and music... can anyone recommend an awesome and inexpensive external hard drive?? thanks!!!
    meg

When I was shopping for an external hard drive a year ago at this time, I was advised by two venerable posters not to buy one that doesn't have a 5-year warranty. That's kind of a hard thing to come by, and you probably will have to buy an internal hard drive and an external FireWire enclosure separately and assemble it. It's a pretty easy thing to do, and it's usually a bit cheaper than buying one already assembled.
5-year warranties are even harder to find this year, but I did find this one at a pretty good price:
    http://www.xpcgear.com/seag250gbat72.html
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148141
Any pre-assembled Seagate drives that I can find only have a one-year warranty on them (such as this one at Amazon.com).
It may well be worth it for that extra warranty to buy the pieces and assemble it yourself.
I ended up buying a Maxtor drive with a five-year warranty and a Rosewill case. If you decide to do that, be sure to get the FireWire enclosure.
    Good luck.

  • Formatting 160gb LACIE hard drive for iBook

I have just bought an external hard drive and did a back-up without formatting. None of my photos went over and I realised I had not formatted the hard drive. How should I do this - no clear instructions available. Thanks

Disk Utility can be used to format the drive (as Mac OS Extended / HFS+) as well as to if desired partition the drive into multiple logical volumes (e.g., one partition for a clone of the hard drive, a second partition for a redunant backup of iTunes and/or iPhoto Library folders).
LaCie drives labeled for Macs are already formatted as HFS+ / Mac OS Extended. A 160 GB Windows drive would be formatted NTFS which a Mac would be able to read but not write to. Did you backup only the photos? If nothing went onto the HD, it muight be NTFS. If non-photo files went over, it's lilely the drive is HFS+ and the problem is how you attempted to do the backup. What program(s) did you use to bakup the files? Did you doa Finder drag-and-copy, did you use SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner or another third-party application, or did you use iPhoto to backup the pictures?

  • HT2801 I have a 2009 MacBook with an optical drive built in. It has "spotty" performance lately, so I got a USB super drive for Christmas. Unfortunately, the MacBook doesn't "see" it. Any solutions?

I have a 2009 MacBook with an optical drive. It is becoming unreliable, and as a result, I got a USB SuperDrive for Christmas. Problem, neither my MacBook, nor my iMac (2008) recognize the drive.  What's the issue? I thought I could get a few more years out of my MacBook by using an external USB optical drive.

The USB SuperDrive is only designed to work with a few Mac computers.....specificaly the ones that do not have an internal Optical Drive...
