Combo Update...where?

Ok, so I am ready to update to 10.4.6 and I have heard that it makesmore sense to download the combo update as opposed to the one from software update. My question is: Where do I find this update? I have done a search here and I just keep getting pointed to 2 options---Combo for intel and combo for PPC. Nothing there for G5.

Erto,
The "Mac OSX 10.4.6 Combo For PPC" is the one you are looking for for your G5. It doesn't say G5 because it refers to the architecture (PPC) whereas G5 is the processor name or version. PPC is the architecture for the G3, G4 and G5 models---the processors being the most obvious difference.
You can find that download here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
You better have a broadband connection because it is a huge download: 140 MB versus the smaller 65 MB you get from the "delta" update (or the one from Software Update on your Apple Menu.
Hope this clears it up for you...

Where is the link to OS X 10.5.8 Update and 10.5.8 Combo Update?
Normally, you can do a Google search for 10.5.8 and the link will pop up right away, but I've tried searching Apple.com and Google.com to no avail.
I don't want to use Software Update and I want to keep a copy of the updater on DVD.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Where's the OS X 10.8.3 Combo Update installer?

    Hi,
I know the OS X 10.8.3 update is now released to the general public. However, I am having trouble finding the OS X 10.8.3 Combo update at the Apple Support Downloads page. Is the Combo installer available? or should I wait until later tonight to see if the update appears at the Apple Support Downloads page? Recently, I switched to updating my OS X installation using the combo installer rather than the one offered by Software Update to avoid any issues and also to refresh any updated files to fix any corruption should they be present.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hello,
I'll split the ten "solved" points between the two answers by marking them as helpful!

  • Os 10.4.4 combo update

I am trying to fix a conflict between QT 7 and Premiere 6.5.
I downloaded the 10.4.4 combo update from the apple website because I am trying to follow someone else's set up where he reports no problems.
The update is 'not recognised' by my computer. I then tried the 10.4.3 combo update to see if i could then update from there to 10.4.4... that too was 'not recognised'
Any idea about how i can get over this problem?

  • Re. 10.4.11 Combo Update / additional unintended consequences?

I'm making this a new post since the previous one on a related topic was answered. That post was intended to clarify whether the file mDNSResponder, having been moved out of /usr/sbin, would be replaced by a new mDNSResponder in /usr/sbin when applying the 10.4.11 Combo Update. The answer was positive. Here is the link to that thread.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1666714&tstart=15
In that thread Michael Conniff said that, "Yes the Combo will supersede all the other changes."
Two further questions, then, have occurred to me. The Combo Update from 11/14/07 included Safari 3.0. Since the Combo Update supersedes "all the other changes," will that mean my Safari, currently 3.1.2, will be replaced by the older 3.0 version? And, since Apple states the update includes "recent" security changes, does that mean I will lose all the security updates I have installed from whatever the version was in the Combo through Update 2008-005?
Will there be any other unintended consequences similar to those above? Thanks in advance for help on this.

    Bummer!
Wouldn't it be nice if Apple updated the update! I know all that stuff can be reinstalled, but I've held my breath through the last batch of security updates. No problems resulted, but it's not the most relaxing experience I can think of. At this point I'm leaning towards, "if it aint broken...." It's just that all the OS updates from 10.4.4 on were done on an extremely crowded 10GB drive where I would have to force shutdown from an endless grey screen after restart. But worked fine after that. And clone to external and back to new bigger HD with CCC would have defragmented everything .
Will start a new thread if necessary but, as I've got your attention, can you recommend a good intermediate through advanced book on Tiger?
Thanks for answer on update question.

  • 20 inch Aluminum iMac crashes after installing Mac OS X Combo Update 10.5.6

I have a school lab with 22 of the new 20 inch Aluminum iMacs. They all have been having a problem with crashing after someone logs onto my network server, which is still running the 10.4 Tiger version of the Apple server. They run fine if you boot up and log on as a local user, and they seem to run fine when you boot up and log on to with a server account, but when you log off from the server, about five seconds later while the aurora screen is still showing, they crash and give you the Apple version of the "blue screen of death."
I was told that the fix was to download the combo update separately from the Apple website and use that to reinstall and update the operating system.
I downloaded and tried installing with a 10.5.6.dmg file and a 10.5.6.dmg.smi file, but they both crashed.
Where can I find the "fixed" version of this update or is there some other fix?
I have tested this on 9 or 10 different systems.
The first file was MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg, which is a disk image file that is 668.8 MB or 684,774 KB.
I looked in the discussion groups on the Apple web site and found some discussions for problems that seemed similar to, but not quite the same as my own. They led me to a file MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.6.dmg.smi, which a self mounting image file that is also 668.8 MB. I tried it and got the same result.
I can install my dvd, which gives me 10.5.1, which will log off and reboot correctly.
I can then install several miscellaneous upgrades:
    Pro Apps Update 2006-02 V1.0
    AirPort Utility V5.3.2
    Remote Desktop Client V3.2.2
    QuickTime V7.6
    iTunes V8.0.2
    and also
    Front Row V2.1.6
The system will then log onto the network, log off and reboot correctly.
But, when I install the 10.5.6 combo update from any of my sources, it boots and logs on fine. But, if I log onto the network, it crashes when I log off.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks for your help.
    John R H

Have you tried starting up with your install disk and doing a disk repair?
Put the install disk that came with the Mac in the DVD/CD drive and restart holding down the 'C' key. You can take your finger off once you hear it making noises from the DVD/CD drive. You'll be presented with a screen where you choose your language. At the next screen on the menu bar select Utilities>Disk Utility you then select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If it makes any changes click on 'repair disk' again and repeat the process until you get a clean pass. Once done select restart from the Apple menu and hopefully the Mac will boot normally.

  • Using Pacifist and OSX 10.6.4 Combo updater to restore old CUPS file

I am planning to update to 10.6.5, but am anticipating printing problems with Adobe programs (after reading posts on this discussion board and at MacFixit). I have heard one solution (after updating to 10.6.5) is to replace the new pstops filter in the CUPS system with the old one in 10.6.4 by using Pacifist to extract the old filter from the 10.6.4 Combo updater. When you go to the Combo updater page, there seem to be 2 ways to download it, one from the main page, but then there is another page where it offers to download a different kind of package for use with multiple installations, etc.. Which one should I download? I just want to have the installer package sitting on my desktop so I can extract the pstops filter from it; I don't want it to go ahead on its own and reinstall 10.6.4. Also does anyone have any other advice on using Pacifist to extract the pstops filter? Thank you.

Thanks, Kappy. I did upgrade to 10.6.5 and decided to go ahead and extract the CUPS file from the 10.6.4 updater using Pacifist. The file was indeed in the 10.6.4 combo updater, which I had no trouble downloading (with your reassurance), although it took quite a while to download. I actually used instructions given by MacFixit (which had alerted me to the printing problem in the first place) to do the extraction. All now seems to be working fine with printing in 10.6.5.

  • 10.6.3 Combo update fails 5x at end

I tried to install the 10.6.3 Combo update on a 2006 MacBookPro five times, with the same "installation failed" error. First time I tried via screen sharing from my desktop (where install went through without problems). Second time, directly from MBP. 3rd time after booting into single-user mode and running fsck. 4 time after logging in with shift key down. 5th time after booting into safe mode.
Permissions were repaired before first try.
Although it says it failed, the about box says "10.6.3". the only oddity i notice so far is the file mac_kernel at root, normally invisible, now appears. (but maybe that's the result of booting into safe mode??)
Any further ideas? Do I have a frankenstein system now?

to me it looks like the problem is somewhere in here and has to do with ownership issues on /Volumes/Boot OSX and or the com.apple.Boot.plist file mentioned. I just need to know what to do to fix it:

  • 10.7.3 Combo Updated and still no internet connectivity, 15" Early '11 MBP, Wi-Fi or ethernet

    Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2.2Ghz i7, 8GB RAM
I downloaded the 10.7.3 delta update on Saturday and installed it without issues. As soon as I started using it I was unable to connect to any internet conenction within OS X. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, nothing can connect to the internet, although I can connect to the router.
I am able to connect to the internet using my Boot Camp Windows 7 partition, as well as through the Lion Recovery Disk's Safari Browser.
I was able to download the 10.7.3 combo update as the hopeful solution to my problems using Windows 7.
However, after installing it I am in no better position and my 10.7.3 install still has no access whatsoever to the internet.
Looking for an urgent fix, and have tried most of the various forum suggestions (checking/unchecking settings, etc.) - all to no avail.
    Please help.

I've been on 10.7.1 thru 10.7.3 and am still suffering from connectivity issues (brand new MBA running Lion). If you search using the keywords Lion Wifi Problems (or something to that effect) a lot pops up...one thread has almost 200k views and the other's got over 45k (other threads have a few hundred or a few thousand), just in the Apple Support area alone, ignoring the bloggers that have also raised this issue.
The issue doesn't affect everyone running Lion, or all of a particular type of machine, but there are enough reports of Lion on different machines (upgrades to older machines, and pre-installed brand new ones, desktops and notebooks), using different routers, in different countries, etc., to show that this is a statistically significant problem, and that there's most certainly a bug in the OS. There are people running PCs and older OS versions and iOS on the same network, and the only thing with the problem is the machine running Lion. Unforunately, Apple has not officially acknowledged this problem, so for those of us who've tried everything and run out of options, we're stuck with what we've got - an expensive machine that can rarely/barely connect to the internet.
There are some temporary fixes like logging out and logging back in (sometimes after logging into a different account), renewing the DHCP lease in network preferences, turning the router off and on again, reinstalling the OS, deleting all the remembered networks and passwords, deleting the preference file and letting it rebuild, changing the order of services in network preferences (e.g. so WiFi comes before Bluetooth), setting up a continuous ping so the network doesn't disconnect because there's no data transfer, etc., etc. For some people, this miraculously works, but for most, it's a quick fix or doesn't help at all.
10.7.3 was supposed to address part of the issue (not finding a network when waking from sleep), but unfortunately hasn't for most people. I'm starting to think the only way this will get fixed is if people kick up enough of a fuss to mainstream media that they start to take notice and report on this. I would think that this is far worse a problem than the antenna issue, because these machines are more expensive, and lose connectivity regardless of how we hold them or where we take them. This is particularly frustrating for those of us who own machines that have no ethernet port, or are in places where the only option is WiFi.
Best of luck with resolving this. Hopefully Apple will fix things soon!

  • 10.4.9 Combo Update amavisd problem

I just applied the 10.4.9 combo update to a 10.4.8 machine that had been updated previously with BuildSmart.
Everything seemed fine, except amavisd refused to start.
System log fills up with amavisd failing & throttling messages and the outbound queue (obviously) fills up.
-"sudo launchctl load org.amavis.amavisd.plist" reports "Nothing to load"
-the original amavisd binary is where I left it, in /usr/bin
-the launchd plist itself is/was unchanged
-the PID file in /var/amavis went missing after the upgrade, but copying the PID file to /var/amavis from a backup did not help
-replacing all the postfix & amavis config files with backups did not help
-telnet localhost 10024 responds with a permission denied message
repairing permissions results in * a lot* of fixes to permissions, but nothing that allowed amavisd to launch. I repaired the clamav user after permission rebuild with 'sudo chown clamav:clamav /usr/share/clamav'
postconf -n looked normal and matched the backup output
file owners & groups all looked normal
su'ing to clamav and issuing "amavisd reload" results in some type of "compilation" error message and a complaint about MIME:Base 64 not being installed - almost like the amavisd binary was a make file ... I confirmed it was at least marked and labeled executable ...
I installed MIME::Base64 using CPAN- no change.
I am now restoring from backup and will try again using software update instead of the combo updater. If it repeats, I'll post with more details.
In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated.

As far as the logs go, Amavis won't start, so the only messages are in the System log from launchd stating that amavis failed to launch and that it will retry x more times. I can't launch amavisd in debug mode either, although any attempt to do so, or issuing amavis reload (as user clamav) generates the message about MIME::Base64 being unable to load and "exiting at line 157".
launchd seems to be doing its job.
I had a look at line 157 in amavisd - it comes right after the section where amavis tries to to load all the required perl modules. Everything I'm seeing is pointing to amavis not being able to open the required perl modules.
I've checked and compared my perl installation and re-installed all the required modules from CPAN. The last thing I did before I gave up was copy over the entire working perl setup from my backup. Perl works, the MIME::Base64 module works ...
perl -V looks like the below; the list of installed modules is way too long to post.

  • 10.6.4 Combo Update fail, as do updates to iTunes and iPhone

I seem to have a larger problem here with updates, but for now I'll focus in on the 10.6.4 update where my efforts are centered.
I have tried 3 times to update my 10.6.3 machine to 10.6.4 (no, I don't have a SMART board and my maxfile limit is just fine, thank you).
Instead, I get the following error in the "install.log" file:
Aug 13 21:29:23 Aka /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/MacOS/Software Update[289]: PackageKit: Install Failed: PKG: extracting "com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.6.4"\nError Domain=PKInstallErrorDomain Code=110 UserInfo=0x119160430 "An error occurred while extracting files from the package “MacOSXUpd10.6.4.pkg”." I've downloaded fresh copies of the 10.6.4 Combo Updater 3 times, and even the .dmg file reports that it is corrupted and it won't unpack the thing.
Since I think this is a larger issue (I cannot get iTunes 9.2 and my iPhone 4.02 update just bricked my new iPhone) is there somewhere else that I can look?

Aw...shucks! Limiting the package scope did NOT work either.

Running a 10.6.0 virgin install has clearly not helped. Downloading combo updates isn't working. I'm pretty much screwed and royally ****** at Apple right now (almost enough to spend my night typing a detailed bug report on radar).
Any other ideas? Genius bar and make them suffer? Wipe my drive and re-install off my backup and just run 10.6.3 forever?

  • Installing 10.4.9 combo update

    hi,
nice to be here as a newbie...
i'm trying to install 10.4.9 as a combo update (can't use software updater cos running pro tools, etc). download of pkg file is ok, but when i run the installer it hits an error half way through downloading and stops.
only reason i can think of is that i started installing it through software updater a few months ago but stopped halfway through the process. so i'm wondering whether there's half a malformed update somewhere on my system that's preventing the shiny new combo update from installing properly.
any ideas? if that sounds likely, no idea how to fix it or where to look for and delete half-downloaded files...
    thanks in advance,
    nick

*…can't use software updater cos running pro tools, etc.*
AFAIK, that shouldn't preclude using Software Update.
*download of pkg file is ok, but when i run the installer it hits an error half way through downloading and stops*
That's confusing. First, you say the download was OK, then you say that you run the installer and the download halts. If you've downloaded the install package, then installing it shouldn't require any downloading.
*…I'm wondering whether there's half a malformed update somewhere on my system*
Possibly. What's in your download folder? If the package is there, delete it, and download it again. Also consider installing the 10.4.10 COMBO update, instead. You should also check your /Library/Receipts/ folder for MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.9PPC.pkg. If it exists, delete it and try reinstalling.
BTW, you mentioned being a newbie. Is that to using Macs? If so, see my post at http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5125089 which points to transition documents.

  • Can't find the OS X 10.10.3 Combo Update - installer file download

I can't find the OS X 10.10.3 Combo Update - installer file download
Even searching for "OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update" (WITH quotation marks) nothing shows up.
Does anybody have a clue where to look or how to search for it?
    Thanks,

  • Update(s) vs combo update(s)?

    Hi everyone,
I wasn't sure exactly where to post my question. I read through some info about updates and combo updates but I must be missing the obvious because I still don't understand the difference. What is prefereable/better and why? For example: if you start off with 10.5, can you go directly to 10.5.8 (update or combo update)? Or do you need to go through 10.5.xxxxxxx (updates or combo updates)all the way to 10.5.8 (update or combo update)? As you can see, I'm confused.
    Rio

if you start off with 10.5, can you go directly to 10.5.8 (update or combo update)?
    With the combo update only.
do you need to go through 10.5.xxxxxxx (updates or combo updates)all the way to 10.5.8 (update or combo update)?
Only if you use the non-combo updates, each of which will only increment the last number by one.
Essentially, the current combo updater is the combined total of all the others.

  • Stuck iMac during 10.6.2 to 10.6.8 OS combo update

    Dear community,
I recently had to wipe out an iMac HDD and reinstall the OS. The install DVD contained OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.2, and I wished to upgrade to Mavericks (10.9) by doing an intermediate update to 10.6.8, as required by the new OS installer.
After a successful disk erase & OS installation from DVD, I tried to update the OS by using the 10.6.8 Combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1399, which was located on an external hard drive. Just before finishing the update, the screen went black and there was no way to recover the system. Fan and internal HDD were both spinning, so the system was stuck for an unknown reason.
After waiting for 15 minutes, I decided to switch off the computer manually with the power button, and since then the iMac won't boot any more. Here's a list of what I tried:
    - Boot from cd ("C" during startup): impossible, another disc is currently in the drive, and can't eject it
    - Safe mode: won't load in 30 minutes, I guess it won't load at all
    - Reset NVRAM: no effect
    - Single user mode:
          - "fsck -fy": no effect, volume is OK;
          - reinstalling the updates from within su mode "softwareupdate -i -a" (hoping to reinstall it and get rid of the possible crap): impossible, there is no network connection.
Any help would be very welcome

Thanks for the hint, I managed to eject the disc holding the mouse click and inserted the OS DVD.
This doesn't solve the problem though, I can't boot from it (holding "C" has no effect, nor has the "Alt" key).
Reading the verbose boot output, things seem pretty bad:
    jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal: from some_decimal: to some_other_decimal (joffset some_hexadecimal)
    jnl: unknown-dev replay_journal done.
Maybe broken filesystem, but I can't explain why external boot mode doesn't work…
