Comcast dynamic DNS configuration

I'm really inexperienced with this stuff, and I just got a letter from Comcast saying that I need to configure "my PC for dynamic DNS communication".
I have Airport extreme directly connected to my Comcast modem, and one iMac is served wirelessly and the other wired to the Airport Express station.
What do I need to do? Anybody? Everything seems to work here now and I hate to mess it up, but they keep sending me dire warnings!....

  • AirPort Express dynamic DNS configuration

    Hi,
I just bought a 2nd gen AirPort Express and completed the setup successfully. Then I saw the option to configure a Dynamic Global Hostname, I assumed its for a DNS. But I can only complete username, password and host name. is that enough? I mean, does the AirPort automatically locates the provider? I want to use noip.com.
    Thank you very much.

    thank you.
The only thing, the instructions in that post are for Mac, very close to the real deal for iOS 8, here are the corrections, I forgot to say that these configurations are unavailable in the AirPort Utility for PC.
    1. Open the AirPort Utility on iOS 8
    2. Click on your AirPort Device, then click "Edit".
    3. Select the "Internet Connection" tab.
    4. Now in the "Domain Name" section type "no-ip.ddns"
    5. Now click "Done" and go back and go to "Advanced" and then "Dynamic Global Hostname"
    6. Enable the sitch for "Global Hostname"
    7. In the "Hostname" section fill it with "yourhostname.ddns.net" or it could be "yourhostname.no-ip.com" or whatever other hostname No-IP.com may have assigned you.
    8. In the "User" & "Password" sections fill it with the username and password that you chose when creating your "No-IP.com" account.
    9. Now click "Done" until you see "Update" which will save the settings.
Now, the only thing remaining is how to setup over WAN as I checked "Allow setup over WAN" in the AirPort Utility.....

  • How can i configure a dynamic dns at a time machine

    Hi All,
I have a time machine at home, with Airport Utility version 6.1.
I'm currently trying to configure a dynamic dns at the airport itself but I don't have any luck in finding the functionality to do so. Couple of questions:
      1) Do I really have to install the previous versions 5.6 Airport Utility to configure DDNS?
      2) I assume if I can't use the previous versions of Airport Utility then I would need to use a Dynamic Update Client. My No-IP Dynamic Update Client doesn't seem to be running on MAC OS X Mountain Lion. Is there any other developers that provides a domain for free and the DUC is actually working on OS X Mountain Lion? (E.g. I heard that DysDNS doesn't provide an entirely free service anymore)

I think you mean Time Capsule not time machine.. TC is the hardware .. TM is the software backup program in the computer and has nought to do with DDNS.
There is no DDNS client in the TC.. never has been. Apple must have some private system for icloud to work.. but no access is allowed to it by users. As with all things apple it is designed to ensure you are able to use icloud or nothing.
I am not on ML or even Lion.. good old SL is fine to me.. and far better networking.
I presume some of the dyndns providers will offer a client for ML now..
All of the free services are trying to sell you something.. and constantly harras you.. no free lunch in this world.
The easiest method and to escape the upgrade cycle.. just get another router.. almost every router in the world provides several dyndns clients built in. The router is where this should be done. so the computer can stay off. Just bridge the TC and port forward to it. Simple and cheap.

  • How to Configure bootpd to Perform Dynamic DNS Updates

I have been able to get bootpd configured to function as a basic DHCP server. I would now like to configure it to dynamically update DNS forward and reverse zones when leases are assigned, released, or expired.
Does anyone have an example of a bootpd.plist file to configure bootpd for dynamic DNS updates?

    Hi,
I am not sure what you are attempting to configure here.
But what the NAT configuration above does is do a Dynamic PAT for all the servers on the "firewall-dmz" to a single IP address towards the "firewall-outbound"
This Dynamic translation doesnt however enable connections to be initiated from behind the "firewall-outbound" interface. When your hosting a server which needs a NAT towards the users then the NAT type has to be Static NAT or Static PAT.
Static NAT will essentially use up one public IP address for just the single local host/server.
Static PAT will do a Port Forward from the public IP address and public port to the local IP and local port. And this is most commonly used with environments which only public IP address is the one that the ASA holds in its WAN interface.
A typical Static NAT configuration is this
    static (inside,outside) 1.1.1.1 10.10.10.10 netmask 255.255.255.255
    Where
inside = is the interface behind which the host is
outside = is the interface towards which the host is NATed
1.1.1.1 = is the public NAT IP address for the host
10.10.10.10 = is the local IP address of the host
A typical Static PAT configuration is this
    static (inside,outside) tcp interface 80 10.10.10.10 80 netmask 255.255.255.255
    Where
tcp = specifies the protocol for which the Static PAT configured
interface = specifies that we will be using the public IP address of the destination interface "outside" as the public IP address for this single Port Forward.
80 = first "80" specifies the public port visible to users behind the destination interface
80 = second "80" specifies the actual local port on which the local host is listening on
    Hope this helps

  • Dynamic DNS Port Forwarding Set up on Airport Extreme

I just bought the new AEBS and am unable to afp into my computer from outside the network. I use a dynamic DNS service (www.dyndns.org) and have not had trouble in the past, but now it tells me that the server does not exist. What is the trick? I have tried many options in the forum, but with no luck. I am using firmware 7.2.1 (that is what came with the base station). My Internet service is through Verizon and I know that it does not provide port problems since it worked with my Netgear router, I don't have file sharing on for mounted disks (there are none attached) and entered my DYN DNS information in the Bonjour tab. I know this should not be so complicated, but nothing seems to work. For some reason, the base station is using port 548 (i have been told) and tried using another port). Someone please help.

First of all you must install a DDNS Client on the machine you want to access. I don't know if DynDNS has one.
No-ip.com as one. Just create a free account, install and configure the client software. It will transmit the Wan IP of you network to the no-ip servers, then you'll be able to connect IF the port for afp is routed to the correct machine in the AEBS. Here is a link the the ports used by Apple products:

  • Dynamic dns that supports RFC 3007

Apple's manual for Dynamic Host Configuration seems simple enough. Just find a dynamic DNS host that supports RFC 3007, log in, and you're ready.
My problem is, after talking with dozens of Dynamic DnS providers, none support the RFC 3007 spec.
Does anyone know or an RFC service provider that supports Apple Airport/Lion Dynamic.Host Configuration with firmware 7.x or higher and Airport Utility 6.x or higher?
    -Chris

Have you come across a provider which supports RFC 3007 yet?

  • LAP dynamic DNS record

    Hi,
I'm facing some issues to populate dynamically DNS record of APs. The IPs addressing of APs are configured via DHCP servers (MS). The DHCP server is not configured to register automatically record against DNS (MS on the same server); as said by system administrator. The problem is that some APs record are populated on the DNS and some not (even in the same subnet).
So the question is : Does LAP supports DDNS or the record needs to be done by the DHCP ?
    Thanks a lot
    Vincent

Does it simply check AP reachability or will that collect information via SNMP from AP directly.
If SNMP, this will simply duplicate monitoring (as you already doing it via PI) & could impact the AP performance.
I would simply give "read-only" view to Prime & briefing them what/how to look something on Prime.
Not sure how many AP you got, we have close to 2K & I do not want to administer anything like what you are going to do.

  • Actiontec MI424WR-GEN3I with ChangeIP dynamic dns

I'm trying to configure my router (Actiontec MI424WR-GEN3I, v. 40.21.10.3) with ChangeIP.com dynamic DNS.  It's listed in the provider drop-down in the Dynamic DNS section of the router GUI, so i figured i'd be all set.  I setup an account with ChangeIP, and then got a hostname from them.
In the router i'm configured as follow..
Hostname: MyHost.changeip.com  (<-- actually MyHost.onmypc.org; "onmypc.org" being one of the domains ChangeIP offers for free.)
    Connection: Broadband Connection (Ethernet/Coax)
    Provider: changeip.com
    Username: My changeip username
    Password: My changeip password
    Dynamic DNS System: Dynamic DNS
    Offline: (not checked)
    SSL Mode: None
In the status area it just says "Error - Unknown changeip.com error".  There's nothing in the changeip knowledgebase.  Has anyone tried configuring changeip on their router?  I know they have something called homeing beacon, but really i just want this to work as configured without having to install anything extra.
    Thanks!

Hello, I had the exact same problem.  It seem Verison FiOS router is not very flexible.  You can't enter another Dynamic DNS (DDNS) and can only use one on the list. The only two free one I found was no-ip.com and changeip.com.
The no-ip.com came back with a host not found cause they've changed the name to noip.com (without the dash) so the dumb router is not able to find it.
The changeip.com is no help either as you've found out.  I keep getting Error but it does not say why.  Fortunetely I did found a solution.  You can download changeip.com's DDNS Update Client (for Windows, Linux, or OSX).  The called this software as Homeing Beacon.
    http://www.changeip.com/accounts/downloads.php
In Windows it runs as a self startup service so you don't to remember to run it but you will need a Windows PC to be on for the update to occur.  Basically instead of updating changeip.com's DDNS entry from the router, you have a Windows client that somehow figures out what the router's IP and act as a proxy agent and update your DNS entry on changeip.com.  This is a workable workaround, I think.  The drawback is you need a PC running every so often on your home network so updates occur.  But, the price is FREE and you can't beat that.

  • RV320 Dynamic DNS failing

I have an RV320 I am testing in order to determine if it's suitable for use in the company I work for.  We have several remote offices, and will be using IPSEC tunnels, VPN for IT troubleshooting and other features.
    Dynamic DNS is returning
"Authorization failed(username or password)." error, although I think it's properly configured and works on
error, although I think it's properly configured and works on other firewall/router units.  I have reentered the user, password and domain several times, each time it returns the same error.
Can anyone provide insight into the problem?
I also notice the options do not seem to include any way to use a Custom DNS, that is instead of xxx.dyndns.org it would be myhost.TLD.  We have a bunch of xxx.dyndns.org, but do have a few myhost.tld.  I hope this is something that could be fixed.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff,
I think that the issue is that the PW is too long. I recall a case a while back where a customer had a passord over 20 characters and he had to shorten it. My recollection is not great, but I think that 18 was the limit. A feature request was made to lengthen the password field but no change was made due to hardware or maybe OS limitation. I think that the router was the RV042, which has similar code to the RV320. Sorry I can't be more specific. I would try changing the password at least temporarily to see if it works.
If you would like to make a feature request, please call support and open a case.

  • [SOLVED] Local Hosting Using a Dynamic DNS

I've been trying to self host a domain to use owncloud with, through www.mydomainname/owncloud.com or something similar. I've gotten a LAMP set up with a virtual host, have signed up with https://freedns.afraid.org/, set the afraid nameservers, set my IP as an A record through my domain provider and have tried to install a dynamic DNS client on my server computer, though I have not gotten successful results. On my LAMP I've set a virtual host for my domain and I've been able to connect to it locally but not outside of my network. I was able to ping my domain that would in result ping my home IP address but now I get an unknown host. I've also tried to set up my DDWRT router with the provided dyndns. At this point I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly.
Another issue I've been having has been finding a working dyndns client, afraid-dyndns-uv from the AUR gives me a hash error, and the only promising client I've been able to find is freedns-afraid, but it's an RPM package and I don't know how to make use of the files in the tarball.
I can provide any needed configs, though I don't think that a config would be an error as I've been able to start up my httpd service and connect to it locally perfectly fine. I would greatly appreciate any help c:

Now I can ping my IP address but I still can't connect to my domain through my LAMP so now I'm guessing it's either a port forwarding issue or a issue with my apache configuration. What exactly should I have on my httpd conf? I have the ServerName set to my domain name, is there something I'm missing?

  • Hub keeps restarting - Dynamic DNS issue?

I recently got a NAS and tried to open it up on the internet to allow me to access the data away from home...
Anyhoo since I got it wired up to the hub and configured the remote access (which I did through the NAS not the hub directly) I noticed that the hub keeps restarting. The restarts are happening about half hourly and as I'm sure you can guess is making the poor broadband we have extreamly bad.
My question is simple - before I spend hours on the phone to BT could my issue be caused by my use of a dynamic dns to access my nas? If so I will just disable and manage without the remote access.
    Thanks
    Nick

I use a NAS with DynDNS, and have no problems with my home hub 1 restarting. Perhaps you have a faulty home hub?
My network configuration is shown below. I use static IP adresses on my devices, and have DynDNS configured using the
options within the home hub menu.
I have specific incoming ports mapped to the NAS IP address via the home hubs games and application sharing.

  • FIOS and Dynamic DNS

I'm thinking about switching from Verizon DSL to FIOS, but I have a few concerns.
Right now I am able to directly connect form my linux-based router to the DSL modem via PPPoE.  If for some resaon the PPP link drops the router just re-establishes it, and it always knows my outside IP.  It can also update my multiple dyanamic DNS addresses automatically when this happens.  My DSL IP address seems to change only when I shut down my router - it lasts weeks at a time.
With FIOS it sounds like you are forced to use NAT with the supplied router.  I can go ahead and disable wireless on it, and then just set up my own router to use a static IP and put it in the DMZ to get as close to a bypass as I can.  However, if my outside IP changes my internal router isn't going to know about it, and won't be able to update my dynamic DNS/etc.  It looks like the FIOS routers will update dynamic DNS addresses, but I'm not sure if they support namecheap, and I also don't know if they support updating more than one dynamic DNS service when my IP changes.
It also sounds like they cut the copper connection, so if it doesn't work out right it will be very hard to go back to DSL.
    Does anybody know:
    1.  Will the supplied router update more than one dynamic DNS service automatically?
    2.  Will the supplied router update a namecheap hosted dynamic DNS record?
    3.  When updating a namecheap DNS record will it only touch the A record and not mess with all my other DNS settings?
    4.  Can I somehow configure the router to provide my external IP to a single internal computer via DHCP (ie router gets an address from verizon, and then the router offers that address to my own router)?  Obviously this won't work with more than one computer on the router.
    5.  Can I alternatively connect to the verizon-provided router using PPPoE or a similar protocol to just get my external IP directly tunneled through the router?
    6.  Does a FIOS TV standard definition tuner box require a network connection?
    7.  What happens if the tuner it isn't connected to the network?  I won't be using any kind of interactive services anyway since the tuners will just be connected to my DVR.
    8.  Does the network connection have to be on the same subnet as the verizon-provided router, or is it sufficient that it be able to reach that router or the internet via NAT (there would be a NAT layer between my internal network and the verizon-powered router)?
    9.  If this stuff doesn't end up working right, can I just pull the plug on FIOS and go back to Verizon DSL and POTS?
In case it isn't clear, here is how I envision the network looking:
Verizon - Verizon Router - NAT with My Router in the DMZ - My Router - NAT - My internal network
I guess if I get really desperate I could try to find a tunnel broker of some kind - not sure if anybody does that for IPv4 the way it is done for IPv6.  That would allow me to get my external IP through the NAT and potentially give me a static one as well...
I REALLY don't want to pay an extra $50 for a static IP.  I'd probably just stick with the DSL if it came to that even though it is actually more expensive than switching (for dynamic service) and it is a lot slower...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hmm - that idea might not actually work out all that well.  It might or might not work at all, but one thing that it would probably do is make it impossible to access the router's web interface (since the router wouldn't have an IP address of its own on any of the ports).  So, if it did work it would be a once-and-done configuration and then I'd need to reset it to do anything else with it.  This would also make it impossible to attach set-top-boxes directly to the actiontec router, but then again they'd be only one NAT layer away from verizon if I attached them to my home network.
I suspect I might be better off with the DMZ approach and just living with a single dynamic dns entry.  The main reason I use more than one of those is so that if my IP address changes I don't have to wait for the DNS TTL to run out to find out what the new IP is - I can just wait a few minutes to be safe and resolve one of my other dynamic addresses which won't be cached anywhere so it will get the fresh entry.
I guess my other option is to fire up nslookup and point it directly at the appropriate DNS server so that I"m not seeing a cached response.
I've heard mixed reports on how often the FIOS IPs change anyway.  If they only change once in a blue moon I'm not terribly concerned about this stuff.
(Why can't everybody just switch to IPv6 and end all this NAT nonsense anyway...?)

  • Using Airport Extreme 802.11n to update automatic IP for Dynamic DNS ???

    Hello,
does anybody now if it is possible to use Airport to forward the recent IP address to DynDNS.com ? As most routers are able to forward the IP to a provider like DynDns eachtime when IP address is renewed . I have found at the Airport Configruation Utility in the manual configuration the following fields: Button Airport -> Button "Basic Station" next to the field Airport extreme name the Button "config" -> a new pop up opens and at the bottom I am able to activate "dynamic global hostname" and to fill in the user ID + password. But the IP address is not updated at DYNDNS.com
Has anybody experience with Dynamic DNS and Airport extreme ?
    Thanks in advance
    Stephan

  • OS X 10.6.1:  bootpd, named, and dynamic DNS zone updates

I have OS X 10.6.1 installed on a Mac Pro. It is configured to be the name server and DHCP server for my home network, i.e. /etc/named.conf and /etc/bootpd.plist have been modified to provide these services.
I've encountered no problems with either the name server or the DHCP component of bootpd after upgrading to OS X 10.6(.1); however, one thing that continues to bug me is how to configure bootpd to dynamically update the DNS zone files whenever a lease is issued, released, or expires.
At work, I use the Internet System Consortium's DHCP software and have it configured to dynamically update DNS whenever leases change state. I would really like to have DNS done the same way at home.
What changes need to be made to /etc/bootpd.plist that would allow dynamic DNS updates to occur?

Did you ever get an answer to this? Would rather not change the DHCP server in Snow Leopard....
    Thanks
