Two issues: iMac goes into kernel panic and reboots after watching Netflix in HD, and left cooling fan randomly starts. Is this RAM or logic board?

The fan issue has been there for a while, but the kernel panics, AKA crash and reboots started after I got new Crucial RAM for the 2nd time (returned and replaced the two 8GB sticks, because the crashes were worse).  Are the chances that I got 2nd batch of RAM likely, or is there logic board issue here?

When going to a website the picture was small - tried changing the Zoom size , tried Zoom Reset - the text did change size but the layout distorts - found under View - Zoom - Zoom Text Only was checked --- Removed this check mark and the website returned to normal size and Zoom worked normally again. I am 99.9999% sure I did NOT check this myself and there is no one else on the computer to cause it. Maybe this will help.

  • DR-BTN200's right ear is louder and left ear part makes weird sound when the volume is high

I bought DR-BTN200 a while ago and I've been feeling that the right ear part is louder than left ear part.
Not because of my hearing; if I switched R and L around, I still hear left (original right) louder than the right (original left).
Also if I increase the volume, the left ear part makes a high pitch sound when singer/talker/instrument makes an emphasis in their voice/sound.
Is this a common problem? I didn't drop it at all or anything and I just keep the headphone in the part of bag where I am supposed to put laptop in. From outside I don't see any damage on it either.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Nouveau - picture upside-down and left-right

I installed nouveau drivers to replace nvidia, but now when desktop starts, everything is inverted vertically AND horizontally, which gives a very weird effect (apart from being unusable).
Interestingly, cursor is not being inverted at all and order of letters remains left->right, but they are inverted upside-down...

  • Fan and more fan...

I have had this Macbook Pro for about four months. Just recently the fans have started to stay on continuously. I had seen some other posts about this topic on a huge number of forums, but none of them completely addressed the issue here.
From the moment I push the power button, both the right and left fans run at 2000 RPM (give or take seven). I have tried to reset the SMC. I've gone through the whole PRAM NVRAM reset and that doesn't help. I have the latest version of the firmware installed as well. I installed a dashboard widget to see temp and fan speeds and my fans (both right and left) run at 2000 always (like I said up there). It doesn't matter if the CPU's are cool or warm. The warmest they will get is around 42C 112F. I could let it sit all night and still have the same situation.
I could install the third party fan controller program, but that won't fix the issue, just mask it.

Hi MacPro06: The numbers you have posted are perfectly normal. 2000 RPM is the default fan speed for the newer MacBook Pros. 42 Celcius is also quite normal. Not sure why there is more noise, but the numbers are fine.

  • Left fans don't work ?

My brand new Macbook Pro 13'', has a problem, I observed that it gets hot very much (i think) however the fans on the left side don't blow air out while the right ones do. Do left fans blow out air ?

    denozi wrote:
Do fans take in air from left side and gives out from the right side ?
No. In your case the fan (singular) draws in air from both sides as well as the left rear and blows it out the right rear.
First take a close look at the excellent picture clintonfrombirmingham posted of the inside of your rMBP. Look at the left and right edges and you'll see very fine slots in the case. Air is sucked in there and is drawn over the interior parts by the fan to remove their heat.
Second, recognize that you're looking at the bottom, so, with the Mac right side up, the fan is on your right. The 15" rMBP has both built-in graphics and an NVIDIA GeForce GT graphics coprocessor which requires a second fan on the left side to keep cool. When you lift up the screen, you can see vent openings at the hinge, which the fan is pointed at and which you can also see in the picture.
The fan will respond to heat buildup during use and those vents on each side are very close to the bottom and easy to block unless the rMBP is either on a hard, flat surface or is raised. If all the vents are clear and it's still getting warm, either take it in to Apple, as clintonfrombirmingham says, or try smcFanControl, which you can use to speed up the fan beyond what Apple considers cool-enough. But don't over-do it; too much can wear the fan and suck in extra dust.

  • What is Apple charging now to replace a left fan?

I have smc fan control but the left fan finally gave out.  Original equipment.  Owned since late 2007.

OMG.  I read that support article.  I think I am probably SOL!  May try to do one of those self installs or get someone else to do it.  Pretty sure that in the long run, having only 1 fan running isn't sustainable.  Thank you for yours and all rapid responses.

  • Left fan spins slower than right fan

    Hello there..
This morning suddenly I noticed something peculiar. I have this iStat Fan Sensor running in the menu bar and found out that the Left Fan spins at 236rpm and the Right Fan at 5996 - 6005rpms. Perhaps it used to be 2400 or 3000 rpms in avg. most of the time for both fans in an idle state.
I'm beginning to think something is wrong.
Is it normal or something really going wrong? I have my MBP 2010 15" model serviced back in 2011 and they changed my logic board. Never had any issue about this fan issue since then.
So any idea what is going on?

    Just to update....
Well I shutdown my computer and let it rest for 2 hours and then turned it back on this morning and it has been running since this morning and now it seems to be everything ok.
Never did my hardware test nor SMC reset.
So far so good but will wait and see over night and will update.

Yes, look in Activity Monitor (Applications /Utilities /Activity Monitor.app) and see what it eating up all the %CPU. If anything is over 40%, post the name here to get advice or just kill it straight away with the red 'Quit' button.
If nothing is using up CPU resources, but the fans are going full blast, do an SMC reset. Read the instructions here:

  • Left fan 6000 rp Right fan -1 RPM BROKEN?

    Hello
I*ve been noticing that my Macbook 2ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (the old white one with FW400) has been getting louder the last few weeks. The fan is running constantly.
Today I checked with the Fan control app and the program says that my left fan runs with 600 rpm and my right one with -1 rpm
Does this mean my fan is broken or can do some software adjustments anywhere.
    Best greetings
    David

There is only one fan in that machine.  The app you're using is designed for use on any Mac.  The 15 & 17" MacBook Pros have two fans.
However, your single fan should not be running at 6000 RPM (you mention "600", but I would imagine you meant 6000) unless there is a significant amount of activity going on.  Are you doing anything in particular when you start to hear the fan running loudly (e.g. watching videos, playing games, etc)?

  • Right fan not working and temperature rising

    Hi guys (and ladies...)!
I've installed SMC Fan Control on my MBP because it was running hot. Last summer (no, no, I didn't give you my heart...), I sent my MBP in for a logic board replacement, because one day the screen stayed obstinately dark, though I could hear the hard drive spinning... and the fans too!
Recently, I noticed that the right fan was making a real racket, like a ball bearing going sour. I'm planning on bringing my MBP back in for repair (I've got a three-year warranty plan from the French retailer where I bought my machine), but I'd like to know if someone has already experienced a total and sudden fan breakdown such as this.
In System Preferences under PrefPanes, I can access my Fan Control preferences, and it shows one fan (the left one) running at almost 5000 rpm, and the other (guess what? yeah, the right one!) at 0, repeat, zero.
    Something's wrong, right?

Just what I thought... OK, thanks, I'll bring it back in. I just hope they won't keep as long as they did last year (5 weeks to change a lousy logic board, can you believe it?)...
    Thanks, mate!

  • T61 Fan Turns On And Then Off Right Away

When I try to boot my T61 the lights blink, the fan turns on and then after a 1 or 2 seconds the fan turns off and the laptop does not boot up. Nothing comes up on the screen, no beeps as well. I tried to boot the laptop without the hard drive and cd drive but still got the same problem. I also tried booting it up without the RAM (suggested by someone on a different forum) but on trying to do so I would get many beeps.
I started getting this problem today after my laptop froze on me while I was working so I did a hard reboot on it. It wouldn't reboot after that. I had changed my LCD screen and CPU fan around 2 months ago and the laptop was working perfect since the replacement.
Any help on this issue will be highly appreciated.

  • 17" iMac G5 2GHz (ALS but no iSight) runs hot and LOUD fans

    Hi all,
I love my iMac. I've had it for nearly 8 months now. From day 1, I've been surprised by how loud it is under any significant CPU load. Unfortunately for me, I have waited until I'm well out of my phone support window to do anything about it. I have not yet purchased AppleCare.
As I type this, my CPU temp is 70 degrees C and fan is running at 2600 RPM, running nothing beyond the browser in which I'm typing. Should I attempt to work in iMovie and render said work to DVD (the reason I bought the machine), CPU temp will climb to ~76 and fan speed jumps to 4600-4800 RPM. At this speed, the noise is unbearable...but it is annoying even when idle.
Can any of you with this model of 17" iMac comment on your experience? Do these numbers and this experience sound normal? I know I'm not alone in this complaint, but I can't tell how widespread the problem is or whether my machine is normal or defective. I've been told by my local service center (CompUSA) that every single 17" iMac of this revision runs hot and has loud fans, and that there is nothing I can do short of complaining to Apple in the hopes of getting a replacement of a later revision. I was told by a "genius" at a different Apple store that my machine sounded about like he'd expect.
I'm getting a system board replacement tomorrow, but have been told not to expect it to make a significant difference. I figure I must do it before Apple would consider further action.
Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long message...
    Thanks,

    iMac G5 17" Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Mine is still fairly new as I picked it up off ebay a couple weeks ago brand new. So I don't know when it was actually manufactured. The part of the noise that gets under my skin is that soft but constant background whining coming from the CPU fan. It doesn't really sound like anything rubbing or a bad bearing, just the sound that an electric motor makes. But, it just seems to resonate from the lower left hand side where the air intake is.
So quite accidentally one day I held my hand under the left hand side and it completely muffled the whine sound. You could still here the hum and the sound of air but the irritating element was gone. Playing around a little more, I opted to tape a business card under that lower left hand corner, bridging the gap from front to back to still allow an airspace for the fan's suction. It knocks out about 90% of the whine.
It's been running that way for two weeks with no ill effects. Yes, the fan speeds up and slows down when needed. Normal at rest RPM is 1500 and mid to upper 50's on the temp. The highest temp I've seen under max continuous load is 65 with the fan at 4000 rpm.
I did experiment with something longer than the business card but I did then see a decrease in cooling capability. The isight models have their suction ducted out the back and I bet that gets rid of that resonance.
So all in all it still makes less fan noise than my old B&W, it's just that the B&W wasn't up on the desk so close to our heads. But, If your fans are constantly on high, there is a procedure for resetting something in power management, I just can't find it right now. Hope this helps.
