Coming back after a long time.

I used to use Linux--I was really into ubuntu, then random distros, then ubuntu, and then Arch--I considered it to be "bleeding edge slackware with a darn good package manager" (or, alternately, gentoo-from-binary).  At some point, I switched to Windows Vista out of convenience, and stuck with it until now out of convenience--I'm good with computers, and I could make any OS work for me.
Started getting a bunch of blue screens yesterday, and I'm thinking of going back to either Arch or Ubuntu.  When I left Arch, it was, if I remember correctly, before the Xorg7 switch and sometime before Arch switched to dated releases.  Old logo, for certain.  Maybe about 1-2 years.
So... what major changes have happened since then?  I'm rusty on everything, but not too rusty to take on a bit of CLI pacmanning my way to a GUI

No offense, benplaut, but do you really expect someone to list the changes here for you? A better idea would be to start with Arch news - every posting is available at archlinux.org/news. Start at whatever date you want and read up to today. Follow up anything that strikes you as important by reading related bbs/ml posts and wiki articles. Then grab the latest iso/img, install it, and come back with any remaining questions.
Oh, and don't forget #archlinux, if you're the IRC type.
You're right, of course
Really just wondering if it's the same approximate distro... start with barebones and pacman and AUR, work your way up through X and a WM, etc.  I've been reading, it seems like the same basic concepts still apply.

    Hi bluegrandpanash,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you backed up your iPhone to iCloud before updating the software, first try the steps under "Restore from an iCloud backup" in this article to recover your data:

  • Today after a long time I tired to open photoshop CS5.1 on my mac, however it has vanished?

Today after a long time I tired to open photoshop CS5.1 on my mac, however it has vanished and I am unable to find it anywhere on my system. I have recently done an update to my system so am unsure if this has affected it in anyway but the only thing I am able to find in Adobe Utilities is an uninstall option? I have tried reopening old saved psd files but these only open up preview. The photoshop I owned was a student version so am unsure if this has something to do with it going away ? Is there a way to get it to come back at all with out having to buy it again?

Run the cleaner tool and reinstall.

    Hello s0ha1b
If all you get is the Apple logo and it powering off, then the next step is to put your iPhone into recovery mode and then use iTunes to restore it. If you have a back up, then you can put that on there to once the restore is complete.

  • How to delete a junk mail that keeps coming back after deleting it from the junk box?

I have a junk mail from February that I really want to delete but it keeps coming back after deleting it several times. It comes back in the junk mail as 'read'.
    How should I remove it?
Thanks for your help in advance!

If the email provider is Google, try going to the gmail web portal, (log on from a computer or your iPad using safari), and manually delete the contents of your junk and trash.
I did this today, and the reappearing junk has not (as of yet) reappeared.  Knocking on wood.

Everytime I retry or continue the download I just keep getting the same error message!!!
What can I do to get my product?
    PM

The only thing that worked for me was to boot in safe mode.
Power down.  Then press power button and hold 'shift' key until grey screen with progress bar appears... Once booted and logged in just open safari and browse to applestore.
No trouble at all once I did this.

  • HT201263 my ipod touch 4th gen isnt work after a long time with 0 percent battery power. Then its not working. computer doesnt respond to my ipod .only black screen is appearing it even not wake up after reset it what can i do please help me

my ipod touch 4th gen isnt work after a long time with 0 percent battery power. Then its not working. computer doesnt respond to my ipod .only black screen is appearing it even not wake up after reset it what can i do please help me

After being connected to a charging source overnight try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Hello, no experience with TC, but...
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?

  • HT1192 Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too.

Caps Lock is not working in my mac, after pressing long time too. Please help me to sort this problem out.

I think even in newer versions of OS X there is a slight delay; just not so pronounced. My advice to get around it would be to install PCKeyboardHack and KeyRemap4MacBook - then do a couple of things:
Change the Caps Lock key in System Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier Keys to "None"
Use PCKeyboardHack to remap Caps Lock to keycode 110, the PC Application Key, which is unused on Apple keyboards.
Then use KeyRemap4Macbook to map that particular keycode to Toggle Caps Lock.Try selecting For PC Users > Change PC Application Key > Application Key to CapsLock.
I'm pretty sure that should get rid of the delay, which only happens when Apple is in charge of connecting the Caps Lock key to its action.
Really, though, I would personally recommend doing some much more awesome things with your Caps Lock key; it's prime keyboard real estate, and who uses caps lock anyway, except in the darkest corners of the Internet? Personally, I've remapped Caps to be Escape (for use in my text editor) when you press it by itself quickly, but to be Cmd+Opt+Ctrl+Shift when you press it with any other key. I call it the "Hyper" key, and use it to switch applications; Hyp+S = Safari, Hyp+D = email, Hyp+F = Finder... The point is, be creative, make the Caps Lock key work for you.
Oh, and the real Escape key maps to Caps Lock, so I can use it if I want to.

  • Freeze after a long time

I have a peculiar problem with my iMac. When I turn on my iMac it will freeze at the blue screen or shortly after my desktop loads. However I've noticed that it will only do this when the computer is off for a long time. Usually when I turn it on in the morning. When I hold the power button for shutdown and then turn it back on it loads fine. I have noticed sometimes that the time is completely wrong as well.
So after doing some investigations I saw that I should reset the nvram and that it might be a battery problem. This actually makes sense to me because if it's been off for awhile then the a bad battery would be empty but it charges a bit when I turn it on. Then when I restart I have a working battery.
I also recently put bootcamp and windows xp on my computer.
I did a disk utility as well and did a scan and fixed any permissions and it still does this. So is the battery my problem or is it something more subtle?

From your description yes I would change the battery out as the time showing up wrong and the difficulty in starting up are examples of a bad battery. Thats not to say that some other issue may be behind the problem, but the battery is a good start.

  • I open firefox and after a long time the screen is blank and it says new tab on the top, no website will open

I have tried uninstalling & installing firefox and it still won't let me open any websites. I have used firefox for a long time and it has worked great. I did recently install Office 360, but firefox worked after it was installed. Any ideas?

Which version of Firefox are you using ?
Firefox has implemented a new, faster way of loading webpages in Version 33. This new feature is called [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Platform/GFX/OffMainThreadCompositing OMTC]. If you are experiencing black or blank webpages when you start Firefox or on some sites, you should update Firefox. Mozilla has released an updated version that fixes the problem.
If you are in Firefox and can see your menus, you can [[update Firefox to the latest version|update Firefox from the Help menu]]:
*Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]], click help [[Image:Help-29]] and select ''About Firefox''.
If you can't use the Firefox menus, you can go to [https://www.mozilla.org www.mozilla.org] using Internet Explorer or another browser to download and install the latest version.
See [[Firefox shows a black screen or blank screen after updating to 33]] for more information.
Please let us know if this solves the problem.
    Thank you!

  • App store updates coming back after updating

So I have an update for iMovie and a software update. I've updated them several times but they keep coming back...
As you can see I've updated the same thing to the same version several times....

    mmm thats very interesting.
have you logged in and out of the App Store, and or restarted
    all the usual suspects.
you can clear the 30 day update list in the App Store by
    trashing the updatejournal.plist found here.
