Command+F find on 10.4 server. 9.2.2 works better.
I am looking for a job folder called "263898" on a 10.4 machine.
I have the drive mounted, I am LOOKING AT THE FOLDER in my finder window.
I do a command+F to find it.
The new 10.5 machine cannot see it at all, yet sherlock on a 10 year old 9.2 machine finds it no problem.
What has apple done with 10.5 that a simple search on a network drive:
A) doesn't work
B) takes minutes instead of seconds
C) a 10 year old OS does it better
Today's Update.
I need to find a file called "ROVE" (a customer's name).
On 10.5.2 searching our 10.4.11 server I type in "ROVE" and I get 23 results.
On 9.2.2 searching our 10.4.11 server I type in "ROVE" and I get 118 results.
Parameters are the same, Just "NAME: CONTAINS: ROVE"
Has anyone come up with a reason that the newest apple OS cannot do a simple find on a mounted drive at LEAST as good as a 10 year old OS?

Cannot find command in Finder: Go Connect to Server
I recently read about creating a Finder shortcut to an iDisk-like service that allows you to mount an 'internet hard drive' on your desktop. The first step is to use the Finder's Go > Connect to Server menu item. Uh, what? I don't see it. Why?
I should have mentioned that the command provides no output if it succeeds, but will give an error if the key isn't found - so when you say you saw the error after the second command, does that mean there was no error after the first? The commands were intended to attempt to delete ProhibitConnectTo' property from two files where it is known that the key will be recognized but the property wouldn't necessarily be exepcted to exist in both.
Knowing that the affected account is "admin" is helpful because it pretty much rules out user limitations (an "admin" account normally can't be "managed"). The fact that only the original account is affected does narrow things down considerably since it rules out a "Finder.app" Menus.nib hack. It also suggests that if a ".plist" file is responsible, it will be one in the user's folder, ruling out one in eg. "/Library/Preferences".
A couple of quick tests - try moving the com.apple.finder.plist file from the affected user's "~/Library/Preferences" folder and logging out and back in (some "Finder" prefs will need to be reset). The output from these commands might indicate if the 'ProhibitConnectTo' setting is hidden in other ".plist" files in your "home" folder:<pre>defaults find ProhibitConnectTo
defaults -currentHost find ProhibitConnectTo</pre>Or, to take a really broad approach, try moving the entire "~/Library/Preferences" folder, moving it temporarily to the "Desktop" and logging out and back in again. If the menu item appears, you should be able to gradually add back your original preferences in small groups, (restarting the "Finder" and checking the menu as you go) so that you don't have to reconfigure all of your settings... -

Finder error -36 when connecting to server - smbclient in terminal works
Finder > Go > Connect to Server
When ever I need to connect to a smb server using Finder, I get the constant error -36.
In console :
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Socket is not connected
mount_smbfs: could not login to server EXIT15: syserr = Socket is not connected
mount_smbfs: 2 failures to open smb device: syserr = Resource busy
mount_smbfs: session setup phase failed: syserr = Authentication error
mount_smbfs: error from NetrShareEnum call: exception = 382312500
I can sometimes select the share to mount, and it tries for a few seconds, never succeeds.
10.4.10, but this was also case previously. We have every single Mac with this symptom so it is 7 work units at the moment, a Mac Pro, MacBook Pros, MacBook, Mac mini.
Wired, wireless, and even VPN, no matter how the mac is connected to the net.
Every non-Mac server at work tested gives this error when trying to connect to their shares.
smbclient in terminal works.
http://www.macwindows.com/tiger.html and Apple kbase article 301580 suggestions for nsmb.conf didn't make any difference. (the nsmb noauth being a very poor choice if it would work)
smb.conf and nsmb.conf any security settings don't make any difference.
I have working details for connection, so share, ip and dns name, username and password for connection work.
Connecting from Terminal works.
Connecting from any Windows or Linux virtual machine on Fusion on these same Macs work too.
I have changed the workgroup to the correct one in Directory Access.
I have tried all connection syntaxes suggested in http://www.macwindows.com/tiger.html - none of them still work in Finder, always identical results.
smbclient //dns-name-or-ip/sharename -W workgroup -U username
is the only viable workaround at the moment.
Domain=[dnsnameofwhereconnected] OS=[EMC-SNAS:T5.4.21.400] Server=[NT1]
is what smbclient gives for server details when its connected.
As smb works from command line, it's not smb itself that is affected. Just Finder.
I don't have access to edit any settings on the servers that we need to connect to. Only sharename and password that work for connection, but don't allow any editing on the server's settings.
Ideas? This should work in Finder.
Smbclient and Fusion area already somewhat workarounds, so I'm not looking for any third party software for dealing with this.
I spent way too much time with AppleCare on this, and all I got was 90 minutes wasted.
Ideas anyone???I think I have found what caused it. Not solved, but at least this seems so far the most likely cause:
The share name contains hyphen.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106471 Mac OS X 10.1 or later: How to Connect to Windows File Sharing (SMB) : Date Modified: August 01, 2007
“6. You cannot connect to a share with a name that contains a hyphen. Resolve the issue by giving the share a name that does not contain a hyphen.”
smbclient in Terminal is not limited to this "feature" of Finder of Mac OS X 10.1 that was not fixed or recoded to solve it or modify it since adding smb in it in 2001.
It's not possible to test this changing the share name to one that does not contain a hyphen, nor to have one added in this server.
For users that won't have Terminal access, the solution are .. remote desktop with admin user, have admin user come to mount the share in location, or use virtualization software and with it anything that works.
Probably too optimistic to think the smb parts would have been rewritten for 10.5. -
Command to find Linux box - RAM utilisation
Is there a command to find the total memory utilised by all the processes in the Linux server?
Unix Command to check RAM used by one Oracle instance.
- BMPUnix command such as ps may add the shared memory segment size used by the SGA to each dedicated server process.
$ ipcs -mob will give all size of shared memory segments and this includes all SGA size for each instance running on your box.
To get PGA, you will need to use a SQL statement:
select * from v$pgastat; -
No Finder Go "Connect To Server" option
After installing OSX 10.6 I no longer have the Finder > Go > "Connect To Server" option. Command-K does not activate it. How can I connect to a known server? How can I get this option back on the menu?
Thanks!!!!
That helped me...
I could pull up a list of other computers on the network (command-k), but when I tried to connect to any one, I got looped back to the list. Wouldn't connect at all.
Deleting the finder prefs worked like a champ.

How can I find out the mail server from email address?
Hi:
How can I find out the mail server from email address?
for example: If I know the email address is [email protected],
how to find the pop3 and smtp mail server?
THANK YOUYou can't tell by the email address since you can pretty much put whatever you want in there (especially if the SMTP server is not filtering anything).
The header may be able to tell you something. There is a Received header value which looks like it has the routing information although I am not sure if this is a complete trace or just the last hop the message took.

How to find out the application server info
Hi, I am wondering how to find out the application server info in Java code, just like how to find out the db platform being used. Thanks
Hi,
I am not aware of any spec defined way of finding out such info. There may be vendor specific APIs or mechanisms.
But you can use environment entries in your deployment descriptors to specify the information and make use of the entries inside your j2ee component. That will make your code platform neutral.

It is not giving any error. When I try to open the workbook It shows me the name in the favourites folder, but gives error "Unable to find the workbook on server"
If I close the Bex analyzer and open again, its now showing the file in favourites folder meaning file was not saved on the server. I tried with sap_all authorization
Please helpHi,
I got the same problem as yours. But if "sap-all" given, it works. I do not want to give this authorization to all users, so would you pls tell me your final solution?
Thanks a lot.

Hint: ask your technical guys to implement support pack 14... I think your problem will be solved then... because you say you only have this problem since you upgraded...

Default seetings for a (command-f) find?
Hello,
First off, I'm new with Tiger so I suppose my first question would be is doing a command-f (find) the same as using spotlight?
That being said, the search option box that opens when you do a (command-f) find—is it possible to set default search locations (ie. i'd like it to also check a network drive as well by default)?
Thanks,
Kristin.First, yes command-F now uses Spotlight.
Second, there is no good way to change the default find yet. There was a long opinion piece on MacWorld recently (http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/11/15/spotlightanlaysis/) that details the rough edges of Spotlight as it is currently implemented which you might find interesting.
In any case, the closest you can currently come without a lot of work is using the Smart Folders feature to save a search with the settings you prefer. Then to search those settings again, you can open the Smart Folder and change the search value. (Use the "Others..." tab to select specific volumes for your search, btw.)
EDIT: BTW, I forgot to mention, there is a good Spotlight tips article linked off that first one I mentioned: http://www.macworld.com/2005/09/features/tigertips2/index.php. -
I have a topic at link:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7b74fd63-1d0d-449e-9f31-83b707683053/finding-microsoft-document-about-globe-contact-in-outlook-address-book?forum=outlookdev&prof=required
Please see the post first.
I dot not make sense about why a 'globe' contact is available in Global Address List (which belongs to AD), but I cannot find it on AD server? I think the cause relates to Exchange server.
Could you give me an explaination!
Thanks advance.And here the Documentation:

Mail contacts
Mail contacts typically contain information about people or organizations that exist outside your Exchange organization. Mail contacts can appear in your organization’s shared address book (also called the global address list or GAL) and other address lists,
and can be added as members to distribution groups. Each contact has an external email address, and all email messages that are sent to a contact are automatically forwarded to that address. Contacts are ideal for representing people external to your Exchange
organization (in the shared address book) who don't need access to any internal resources. The following are mail contact types:
Mail contacts These are mail-enabled Active Directory contacts that contain information about people or organizations that exist outside your Exchange organization.
Mail forest contacts These represent recipient objects from another forest. These contacts are typically created by directory synchronization. Mail forest contacts are read-only recipient objects that can be updated or
removed only by means of synchronization. You can't use Exchange management interfaces to modify or remove a mail forest contact.

Hi there,
I'm trying to send a simple email from a servlet but when I do so I get an exception because SMTPTransport can't connect to localhost on port 25. I'm just using the reference implementation server that comes with J2SDKEE1.2.1 (on Windows XP) and have downloaded the relevant jar files for JavaMail and Jaf, included them in the classpath, etc.
Should I be trying to direct it to a different SMTP server or port, and if so how do I find out where they are?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Rory. You have to know the address of the mail excange server of the person
whom u are sending email,it can be found doing dns query for the host.
For example if u want to send email to : [email protected] then u have
to find the mail exchange server address of AOL.U can find this by
DNS tools, you can find one at http://www.sourceforge.net .
when u get back the name of MX(mail exchange Server) from dns look up
then u have to this.
props.put("mail.smtp.host", smtpServer);
where the smtpServer is the mail exchange server name for the Host.
