Command-H apparently deleted a large document. Can I get it back?

We are new to Mac. My wife was attempting to move to the top of a document and wanted to use a "home" key. There is none on Mac Air. We have since learned what she should have done. What she did do was stroke "Command-H." Her document dissapeared. What remained was an empty page and that has now disappeared as well, probably because of our attempts to retrieve the 24-pages of document that disappeared.
We have since learned that "Command-H" is a "hide" command. We do not know what it might be used for, but are accustomed to being able to use a corresponding "unhide" command.
Is there any way to retrieve our document? It never appeared in Trash. It just disappeared. Is it hidden? Can we unhide it?
We will certainly be glad if we can get the material back.

I could not go back and get my document, as I am working on my Masters Thesis, this was quite a problem. However, luckily I save my document often so it was still in the folder where I had been keeping it. I emailed it to myself and was able to open it and work on it without a problem. Phew! other than that all of the unhide stuff didn't work for me.

Choose Logic Pro X > Key Commands > Edit

I've managed to get some back but via a slightly different method.
Because the files weren't there, when I deleted them from my library they actually disappeared from the list.... So I created a new library (backed up my original one) and then synched that with Match so that all the files appeared. I'm just going through the ones I'm missing clicking 'download' and then when they're all back on my hard drive I'll revert to the previous Library which will hopefully pick up all of the recovered files.

Did you really delete it intentionally or accidentally? If you accidentally deleted the application from the Applications folder, look if it is still in the Trash and put it back or restore it from your backup.
If you deleted it intentionally and deinstalled it, you need to reinstall it - depending on how it was installed originally, see Terence Devlin's answer here:

Correct. You get only one download per purchase (with the exceptions of applications from the App Store).

All my phots in iPhoto are gone..
I saved them while traveling both in iPhoto and in files on my desktop.
Home again, I deleted the files on my desktop, checking all the time, that the photos weren't being deleted from iPhoto. I turned my computer off, and a few hours I had to show some of my pics to a friend, and the were ALL gone!!

What system and iPhoto versions are you using. Assuming it's iPhoto 9 or later do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

How exactly was this all done - step by step
the correct way to move your iPhoto library to an exter4nal drive is
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
And once you move it there is no reason to delete photos form the new location - taht is why you moved it to allow space for it
one possible guess is that you need to switch to the correct library - as noted above depress and hold the option key and launch iPhoto - use the select library window to select the correct library
another possible guess is that you have a corrupted library on the external drive - be sure you are using that library and Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

How did you delete it? (not a silly question)
If all you've done is removed the icon from the Dock, go to the Applications folder, find iPhoto and drag it's icon to the Dock, being careful not to release the mouse until the other icons in there move out of the way for it. (if you release too early, you'll leave the application on the Desktop and will have to drag it back to Applications and try again.)
The icons in the Dock are only aliases, so can be replaced easily.
If on the other hand you've somehow deleted it from the Applications folder, there are two possibilities -
If the trash hasn't been emptied, open it, right click on the iPhoto item and select 'Put Back'.
If the trash has been emptied, you'll need to reinstall it from the software restore disc (disc 2 of the grey discs that came with the Mac), or from the iLife DVD if that's where you installed it from, or if on Lion, I believe you'll need to go the App Store and re-download it (but someone may correct me on that).

I'm not sure that you can delete it.
Have you checked to see if it is on another page or in a folder?
Do you have restrictions set?
Have you tried resetting the home screen layout?

or removed by using restrictions in settings
