Command key lost by finder

All of a sudden my command key stopped working in the finder. It works in other apps so far.

You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it fixed.
A new Mac is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.
Best.

  • Hot key to open finder?

Is there a command key to open finder?
I leave my dock hidden and I was wondering if there was a command that i could hit really quick to get to finder menu so i can get to my movie, docs, apps, etc.

I want to open the finder window.
I pressed f11 and then clicked on the desktop and it selected finder in the menu but it open the finder window.
alt tab only seems to work if you have a finder window open but it is closed then you only select finder (in the menu)
The best I have found so far is alt tab, expose, etc to select finder then press command N

  • Find and Replace window - command-keys?

The "Find and Replace" dialog window has got to be the most
obnoxious bit of programming I've seen, even by Macromedia
    standards.
    1) Are there any command-keys that work with it, e.g. to
CLOSE it from the keyboard without having to mouse up to the
    "Close" button ?
    2) Is there a way to type Cmd-F and then type the string to
search for AND HAVE it actually go into the "Find" field in the
window? (I've typed Cmd-F then a string 1,000 times, only to see
that the string has NOT gone into the search field, UNLESS the
dialog was previously closed. And there's no Keyboard command to
close the window either, see (1) above)
    Thanks!

  • Command key not working in Finder

I'm using a 2004 Powerbook G4 and recently (last 3 days) have noticed that the command key (either right or left) will no longer work for keyboard shortcuts when in Finder or desktop only .. cmd-Q etc work in all other applications, but cmd-w, -a, -delete, etc are all dead in Finder.
OS is 10.5.6, all updates installed, etc
    Any ideas?

Create a new user account just for testing. Does the problem continue when you are logged into the test acct?
Have you repaired permissions lately? I found that, after a lot of updates, the permissions are pretty scrambled and "little things" can start to happen. I now do an RP before and after any update.

  • Ibook command key changed command   comma opens finder preferences?

My kids were playing with my ibook 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and somehow they changed the command key to command + comma. Now when the command key is pressed the finder preferences or if in an application is open the preferences open this also happens when the comma key is pressed. I've looked everywhere on the web but can't find and answer.

Does this happen with both Command keys ?.
Either way : start in Recovery mode then choose 'Get help online' (there's no need to connect to a network)
    Safari should open.
Press the command key : does preferences open, as before ?.
If so, it would seem to be a hardware problem, since the limited Recovery system & included Safari can't be modified by settings changed when started normally.
Restart your computer to return to normal mode.

  • Lost some finder images

Not sure when (long time ago) or why, but I lost some images in finder... the two I am talking about are right of the "new folder" finder "gear" image/icon.
Can someone tell me what images I am missing, where to get them, and where to put them on my system so I don't have question marks in those two places??
    Thanks!!!!

Press the Command key while clicking on them and drag them out of the toolbar, or control-click them and choose Remove Item. There is nothing to the right of that icon by default.

  • Mid 2011 macbook air. command key has popped off and is now missing the 2nd metal bar. can this be replaced?

The command key popped off my mid 2011 macbook air. It is meant to have two metal bars but can't find the 2nd one. I have clicked it back into place but if I press the button at the bottom the top pops up and I'm worried that if I don't fix the problem I may end up losing the key altogether!
Can you buy replacement metal bars? should I just remove the other bar completely?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, must have been the crackpipe I smoked last night! LOL
You won't see anything in the Application Support --> Bootcamp folder unless you have previously downloaded the Windows Support Software. Good find.
    ADDENDUM STEP:
This step should be placed between 9-10.
Open Bootcamp Assistant. Uncheck everything BUT, "DOWNLOAD THE LATEST WINDOWS SUPPORT SOFTWARE FROM APPLE". You will be prompted to burn the image to a CD/DVD or save to a USB Key. Save the image to a USB key. This will format your USB key properly in preparation for the files. The download commences and if you're lucky, the files will simply be saved to your USB key without having to manually copy them over to the key using the steps above.
IMPORTANT - Even if the support software hangs when its being saved to the USB key, you should now be able to navigate to the directory and see the image. Follow the steps above.
    Apologies for missing this.

With Mavericks I have to hold command key down and double click to get a sub folder to open in a new window.  Can I go back to just double clicking ?

Of course. To do it, open a Finder window, go to Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and untick "Open folders in tabs instead of new windows".

  • My command key does not work properly

I changed my left command key on my macbook pro to a different function.  When I hit the left command button it responds by darkening the desktop background and then showing smaller versions of all the applications I have open.  Similar to mission control but not quite mission control.  I have searched around and cannot find a solution.  I am running mac os x version 10.7.5 on my macbook pro.  I have restored default funtion in the system perferences under mission control and keyboard shortcuts.  I have zapped the pram.  Is there anyone who has any suggestions to solve this issue?  Anyone?

Go to System preferences on the Apple menu, then go to "International" pane in the system preferences pane.
Select Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer. Click "Show on the menu bar".
Now on the menu bar there is a flag, probably an American flag, click on it and select "Show Keyboard Viewer"
As you change the fonts or type you will see the kb acting dynamically.
Check back if it does not solve your problem.

  • How do I fix a command key that doesn't work?

I bought a new iMac in December  with the keyboard that comes with the system.  Now my command key doesn't work. I've tried reseting to defaults in case I did something without realizing it, but it hasn't worked.  The really strange thing is that it started working again once, then a few days later stopped again.  Any one know what my problrem might be?  It could be the keyboard itself, but if so, I'll be very disappointed!

Do SMC reset, in order for it to work it make take 2-3 attempts. You can find instructions by clicking Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets

  • Command key activates wrong window in Mountain Lion

I've got some strange bug on my computer that has stumped every genius in the three Apple Stores I've been to--they even took it to the back to ask all the Genius' in the store, so it seems to be a nasty bug. so I figured maybe you all could help me out.
The issue is this: After I upgraded to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard) when I use my "command" key, it randomly activates a window other than the one in focus (on top) of the other windows.  So, for example, if I'm in Safari and try to copy something (Cmd+C) but I also have Word open, it will switch to Word and copy whatever is in Word.  It does this with all programs (even with Finder!), no matter what the Command function I'm trying to use.  If I close the program, the strange behavior will stop for a short time and then come back with another program.  When Cmd activates Finder, I have to relaunch Finder and that temporarily alleviates the problem.  It does this odd behavior with an external keyboard (and the on-screen keyboard), meaning that it's a software, not hardware error.
I have taken the following actions to fix the problem:
    - Reset PRAM (no change to problem)
    - Using Disk Utility to repair permissions and verify disk (no change to problem)
    - Created a new user on the computer (problem re-appeared after importing my backup files using MigrationAssistant)
    - Created a new user on the computer and imported files without importing "Settings" but problem reappeared
    - Reinstalled Mountain Lion (problem appeared after importing my backup files using MigrationAssistant)
The last Genius thought the error was due to an application corrupting some system-wide file in Mountain Lion, so we wiped my hard drive, reinstalled files, and imported my documents but not my apps.  I manually installed one app at a time and had no issues for 3 months or so.
The problem "randomly" came back last week.  Looking at apps that were installed recently, it shows:
    - Flux (update - but Flux was on my computer for 3 months with no issues)
    - Quicksand (update - but Quicksand was NOT on my computer last year when the problem started)
    - VLC Media Player (this WAS on my computer last year but was NOT on my computer in the 3 months with no issue).
Thus, it seems that the culprit app was VLC.  I've deleted it (using AppTrap to clear system files), but the problem still exists.
    So, three questions:
    1)  Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, how to prevent it, or whether it might start again even if I wipe and reinstall everything?
    2) I'd like to fix the problem without wiping my computer and doing a clean install of everything.  Any ideas of how I could avoid doing that?
    3) If I have to sacrifice VLC to solve the problem, fine, but I'd prefer not to.  Any ideas as to how I could use it still?
TLDR: Command key activates wrong window in Mountain Lion; confirmed software issue; reinstall worked fine until installed VLC Media Player and problem returned; how do I fix it?

  • Command-Key etc to start an App in 32-bit mode?

Is there some sort of Command-Key etc to start an App in 32-bit mode, without having to go to "Get Info" ?
I have a Canoscan scanner which only runs in Photoshop under 32-bit mode. It would be nice to be able to launch PS into 32-bit mode when I need to, without going to Get Info.

    Hi,
This AppleScript script doesn't change anything in (Get info), but launch the application in 32-bit mode.
    property appName : missing value
    property tpath : missing value
if appName is missing value then
          tell application "Finder"
set appName to text 1 thru -5 of (get name of (application file id "com.adobe.Photoshop"))
(application file id "com.adobe.Photoshop") as text
          end tell
set tpath to quoted form of (POSIX path of (the result & ":Contents:MacOS:" & appName))
    end if
    get running of application appName
    if the result then
          quit application appName
tell application "System Events" to repeat while exists process appName
                delay 1
          end repeat
    end if
    do shell script "arch -i386 " & tpath & " > /dev/null 2>&1 &" -- launch (32-bit mode)
    delay 1.5
    activate application appName
Quit the application and restart to run in 64-bit mode.
To have a keyboard shortcut to run this script: you have some solutions
First solution: Make a service with Automator.
Second solution: There are some third party utilities that launches script, and you can set a keyboard shortcut.

  • MacBook Air 13" Command Key Backlight

I recently purchased a Mid-2011 13" MacBook Air.  I "love it", but it has a curious anomaly with the backlight behind the left Command Key.  The right Command Key shows three little backlight segments underneath as you tilt the keyboard up and look under it.  The left Command Key only lights two segments leaving the center "mm" looking dim because there is no light underneath the key in the middle.  At first, I thought I simply had a defective keyboard and I went to Genius Bars at two local Apple stores and called the customer support phone line.  The nice fellow at the first store told me that the problem occurs on all 13" Airs, but not on the 11" models, and sending the unit out for repair would only end with the same problem.  Curious?  I brought my Air home and called the Customer Service number.  He consulted with his Senior Advisor and told me that I had a defective keyboard and should take it into an Apple store for service.  I went to a second Apple store and they replaced my original Air with a brand new one (great service), but only to find in the store that the replacement Air has the same problem.  So, the first Genius Guy was right, but what a curious little problem!!  Why would not both Command Keys be lit evenly, with the problem or defect apparently only occuring on 13" models?  Any ideas or solutions?

    Try resetting the PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Should fix it. If not, it's a hardware issue.
