Command Key Not Working

My Command (CMD) keys are not working on my iMac.
It doesn't matter what application I am using and I've tried different keyboards with the same result. I checked my startup items and nothing is there. Login as different user, same problem.
Potential clue: this machine had been used as a demo computer for conferences/expositions and I suspect that the prior owner did something but I can't tell what.

Check whether you have the plist file in the
'Home Folder>Library>Preferences'folder.
1. com.apple.keyboardSetupAssistant.plist
If it is there then try removing it and restarting the Mac.
It appears like the the software is broken. More specifically there is an apple software update for the Keyboard firmware update which needs to be installed. If it is already installed in the computer then probably you will need to try a disk repair from the install disk or an Archive and Install.
Check whether the software is installed here.
1. Click Apple and Open System Preferences
2. Open Software Update
3. Click on Installed updates and check whether you have the firmware updated.
Also note that the firmware update alone may not resolve the issue. You will need to install the latest Mac OS X 10.5.7 for the update to effect. This can also be done as a software update.
Good Luck

  • Command key not working right in several applications

All of a sudden, some functions are not working right, i.e., in PhotoShop when I select the Zoom key I get a minus rather than the usual plus. In Date and Time, I started getting a 24 hour clock. If I go there in System Prefs and change to 24 hour clock, then the readout on my menu bar is for 12 hour clock. Sometimes when I use Command-Q the machine asks me if I want to close all programs rather than just the one I'm attempting to leave. What is wrong?

    Hi n,
I have no idea if this might work, but I'd reset the PRAM and SMC.

  • Command key not working and clacking when touched

My left command key just stopped working. When I press the key, even just barely tap it, it makes a faint "clack" sound- (especially on the edges of the key). It is only the left command key and does not work for ANY function. Any ideas as to what could be wrong???

Are you sure you are using Command+C and Command+V.
Works fine on my MBP Lion 10.7.2 in all applications.
You could also try using the Space bar and the Shift and Enter/Return keys when asking a question.

  • Command key not working in Finder

I'm using a 2004 Powerbook G4 and recently (last 3 days) have noticed that the command key (either right or left) will no longer work for keyboard shortcuts when in Finder or desktop only .. cmd-Q etc work in all other applications, but cmd-w, -a, -delete, etc are all dead in Finder.
OS is 10.5.6, all updates installed, etc
    Any ideas?

Create a new user account just for testing. Does the problem continue when you are logged into the test acct?
Have you repaired permissions lately? I found that, after a lot of updates, the permissions are pretty scrambled and "little things" can start to happen. I now do an RP before and after any update.

  • Zxc and command key not working on apple keyboard

Hi, I'm having issues with certain areas on my Apple keyboard, specifically the zxc and command keys on my keyboard. I have to keep copying and pasting those letters. No spills, no drops, no known reasons for what may cause damage. Any help appre_iated. Thank you in advan_e.

Does it happen with another KB?
If only this KB then the is either dirty or faulty. Maybe this will help

  • Command, option, ctrl, fn keys not working

thanks to a visiting dog who got tangled up the power adapter my laptop ended up on the floor, wide open with the keyboard popped out. I have inspected the connector cable and it looks OK to the naked eye. I disconnected the keyboard cable and re-connected.
When using an external USB keyboard all keys function normally. When using the built-in keyboard the only keys not working are the command, option, ctrl and fn keys. I have restored modifier keys to default (I had never changed them) but this did not help. I also toggled the "use F1-F12 to control..." option in the keyboard preferences to no avail and have restored keyboard shortcuts to no avail.
Is my keyboard shot? Is the a pref file I might delete?

Hi, Mel. If the external keyboard works properly, I'm afraid you have to figure your built-in KB has been dogged to death. I hope the pet owner will do the right thing by you. I also hope the KB is all that was damaged. How are your adapter cord, plug, and DC-In port? Does your battery still charge OK?
Whenever anything visits my house that's active, inattentive, and built low to the ground, my Powerbook runs on battery power only. I haven't seen one yet, but the new magnetically-connected, easily- and harmlessly-detached MacBook Pro AC adapters sound like a superb idea to me. Too bad our PBs can't use 'em.

  • Shift+command+b not working for bold

I just updated to cs6 and my "bold" key command is not working. (shift+command+b on mac) I am using a font that has BOLD. I can select bold from the character palette and it works fine but the key command will not work. I checked my key command list and is there by default. It should work. It worked fine on cs5 for me. I even tried holding the fn key but no dice. Any ideas? I have to bold many many items so I can not possibly use the character palette....thanks.

"Nope" the first word of my response, was to your question. It means No. Meaning "No I did not copy a custom set". I am using default set.
I wonder if some other app has taken that kb shortcut. Nothing happens when I press it though....and I wouldnt know how to find out.
edit - problem solved. Even though the font says that it has a bold face I guess that it does not. Bold still works fine for other fonts. Sorry for your time.

  • Ctrl-T command do not work in website with flash

Ctrl-T command do not work in website with flash
== URL of affected sites ==
    http://

If the Flash object has focus then key presses are processed by that plugin.
In such cases you need to click outside that plugin (e.g. the menu bar if you can't click on the website) to make the keyboard work.

  • Return & shift keys not working

My keyboard is unresponsive.  problms started w/ "L" and "9" and "Enter/Return" keys.  Did a s/w update and reboot but still no success.  Now only "Shift" and "Enter/Return" keys are unresponsive.

I tried the troubleshooting steps listed in the article linked above but ran into the following problems:
    a) the View menu doesn't have a "Speech" item listed (I'm running 10.9.2)
    b) My MacBook Air doesn't have a disk drive; impossible to start up from an Install disk as recommended in step 10.
None of the other steps helped (sticky keys off, slow keys off, mouse keys off, etc)
Looking at the forums, looks like several other people have the issue of just the right-side shift and return keys not working, like me. Could we please have some advice that is specific to that particular issue?
In the meantime I'm using only the left-side shift and have downloaded and installed KeyRemap4MacBook and remapped my backslash key so it issues the "return" command. A clunky work around but it seems to do the trick, at least.

  • Macbook Air keys not working and erratic trackpad

I purchased my macbook air 13" in 2o11. About 14 months after I purchased it, the trackpad was acting erratic. I took it to the genius bar and they recommended replacing it. Since my initial warranty had expired, I decided to replace it myself. Everything was all fine and dandy until about a month ago when the trackpad started acting erratic again. I took it to the apple store and the recommended replacing the trackpad again even though initial diagnostics showed that nothing was wrong with the trackpad. I decided to replace the trackpad myself again {using brand new OEM trackpad}, and a day after I replaced it, I noticed that the zero button and the command keys stopped working, even though the trackpad issue seemingly resolved. I'm not sure what to do or what the problem is. Does anybody have any suggestions? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Since any diagnostics at this point are utterly deadlocked, no; however see SMC reset below for last chance option before appt. with Apple
    re-verify still the same.
Make an appt. with your local Apple store for full diagnostics and possible reinstall of your OS.
I hope you had a backup your vital data on your machine, a complete restore may be required, though that is indeterminate.
    Peace.
See if you can perform a SMC reset to get out of same:
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • "C" key not working in lower Case.

Lower Case "C" key not working, but Cap C and Shift C and Command C work fine. "C" key also works in safe boot mode. How Can I fix this?

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check whether either the listening key or the speech key has become set to that keystroke; if so, change the setting.

  • Open firmware commands do not work on Mac mini

Open firmware commands do not work on Mac mini. At least on Mac mini 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo (2 GB RAM and 80 GB HD) with Mac OS X 10.4.8.
    Holding:
    Option Command OF
    when restarting does nothing!
    Option: alt key.
    Command: Apple key ().
Is this a flaw or am I missing something?
    Thanks.

Since there is no Open Firmware, there's no reason to reset the Open Firmware defaults. I would assume that since there's no current interface to reset the EFI defaults, this operation is not necessary. I can't say that for certain. But, just like "zapping the PRAM", which used to help when troubleshooting issues with Mac OS 9, doing it in Mac OS X doesn't change or affect as many settings so it's really not necessary.

  • Host command is not working on linux

    Any help is appriciateable.

    Hi
I had the same issue on linux a few weeks back. What tuned out was, when you install the Oracle app svr it does not include the system paths by default.
The path where mkdir is located may not be visible to the app.
Try to hardcode the path for mkdir as /bin/mkdir .... and seee if that works.
If the above statement works then add that path in the paths variable in default.env file located in $ORACLE_HOME/forms/server directory
