Command R on MacBookPro not working

Hi,
I have a second hand MacBookPro and am new to apples, all my life on PC, they are v different.
Problem I face, I have been told the computer has a problem and I must turn off computer and turn on while pressing Command and R until the apple logo appears, then stop.
I have done this a number of times, the apple disapears, then a circle appears with a line through the centre, below the little lines keep revolving in a circle, I left it on all night last night, only to wake and find nothing happened.  I have now tried this about 10 times to no avail.
Can anyone advise me please

Sounds like whatever damage has been done to the hard drive has affected the recovery partition as well.  That could mean the hard drive is failing, or it could just mean it's very badly corrupt.  You'll need to completely erase the hard drive and reinstall the system, but that's going to be difficult from this point.  We don't know what system originally shipped on that machine, as we don't know what specific MacBook Pro it is, but probably the easiest thing to do would be to get the Lion flash drive from the Apple Store.  Then boot from that, enter Disk Utility and repartition the drive (don't just erase it).  Then reinstall.
A cheaper option, if the machine shipped with an older system (which I suspect is probably the case), would be to contact Apple to get replacements for the gray disks that shipped with the machine.  (Unless you're one of the rare folks who actually got those disks from the seller.)  Then do the same thing using those disks.  However, then you'll be one or more versions of the OS behind where you are now, and will still need to buy your own copy of Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) if you want to upgrade.
Oh, and if the hard drive continues to give you trouble, it's probably failing and will need to be replaced.

  • Command F [find] function not working in Word 2011

    It seems that my Command F function is not working properly...when I look for a term that I KNOW is in my document, sometimes it won't locate it. Sometimes it will only locate one instance of the word [in the sidebar] when the word actually appears multiple times in the document.  And, if the word appears in my footnotes, the command F function will then only highlight the instances in which that word appears in the footnotes, but not in the main text [again, in the sidebar].  I've also noticed that the spotlight function does this as well [ie, I will use spotlight to search for word documents containing a certain term, and although I KNOW the term is in a certain document, spotlight will not identify that document as containing my search term].
    These documents are a mix of ones that I created using Word 2011 and previous versions - the problem happens consistenly across all word files. And I'm not specifying any particular case for the terms (ie, I'm not searching for "Coffee" with a capital "C" and not getting any results because only "coffee" appears in my document).
    I'm running Word 2011 on Lion OS.  Please help - this is driving me insane.....

  • When Firefox is open the zoom function (option/command/space bar) does not work in Adobe programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)

    Mac OS X 10.6.7
    CS 5.5
    When Firefox is open the zoom function (option/command/space bar) does not work in Adobe programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator). This happens only when Firefox is open and when I close it the zoom functions work fine again without having to restart the applications.
    This is intermittent but happens quite frequently each day if Firefox is active.

    MDN doesn't mention -chrome being used for ordinary web pages: https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options#Chrome
    When I use
    firefox.exe -chrome about:permissions
    I get a usable window, but zoom doesn't work as you noted.
    How about using an intermediate page and window.open() for the target page? You can (mostly) restrict the chrome of windows opened that way, but it will leave behind the intermediate window...

    Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check whether either the listening key or the speech key has become set to that keystroke; if so, change the setting.

  • Command-Left/Right Arrow not working

    Very strange behavior I'm seeing today.
    My left/right arrow keys work. Even Option-Left/Right works correctly.
    But, Command-Left-Right do not work. No movement at all.
    Curiously, Shift-Command-Left/Right work fine.
    I've not changed any keyboard shortcuts recently. I've checked the keyboard shortcuts that are currently defined. Nothing that would indicate a problem, but clearly there is.

    Just found a solution that worked for me here. Basically, it seems to be a bug with the Dock. If you type "killall Dock" (the command is case-sensitive) into the command line in Terminal, it restarts the Dock. After that the arrows seem to work normally again.

  • IMac bocked on start up. Password forgotten. Command-option-p-r not working

    iMac bocked on start up. Password forgotten. Command-option-p-r not working

    "Bocked"? Is that a word?
    The key combination you mention is for resetting parameter RAM or PRAM.  Nothing really to do with passwords.
    At what stage is it asking for a password?

  • Zoom using Command&Scroll Wheel suddenly not working

    I was always able to zoom in and out by holding Command and using the mouse scroll ball. Now suddenly that does not work (I have to use CmdOption+or -).
    I can't see anything in SysPref that would affect this.
    Anyone have any idea?

    No, but you're a genius and I'm an idiot. At the bottom of that screen is a "Zoom using scroll bar while holding -- key" check box that I must have unchecked at some point. I guess I wasn't really all over Preferences after all. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Command msdtc -tmMappingSet is not working

    I am having a two node foc cluster(win2k12r2),
    I have installed the SQL server(MSSQLSERVER) under foc. Now I have two Highly available DTC resources "DTC1" and "'DTC2".  I have made DTC1 as the cluster default DTC and I added DTC2 in the the sql server(MSSQLSERVER) group.
    Now when ever I run the distributed transaction from the sqlserver(MSSQLSERVER) the DTC2 coordinates the distribution.
    Now I have installed one more sql server instance(LOCALSQLSERVER) , and if I run any distributed transaction from this sql server(LOCALSQLSERVER) the DTC1 is coordinates the transaction.
    Now I want to map DTC2 to LOCALSQLSERVER using the command
    Msdtc -tmMappingSet -name "Mapping1" -service "MSSQL$LOCALSQLSERVER" -ClusterResourceName "DTC2"
    But the it fails and the error in eventvwr is "invalid command line arguments".
    I also tried following command but it ends with same error
    Msdtc -tmMappingSet -name "Mapping1" -service "MSSQL$LOCALSQLSERVER" -local

    Hi PuneDev,
    Please remove all '-' and retype them back.
    If you copied the tmMappingSet command from somewhere such as Outlook or Notepad, the command may not work. No error is reported in the output. However if you look at the application event log you will notice an error was logged:"invalid command line
    arguments".
    If that happens, simply remove all '-' and retype them back. It has something to do with encoding format.
    Refer to:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/distributedservices/archive/2010/03/25/import-of-microsoft-distributed-transaction-coordinator-ms-dtc-transaction-failed-0x8004d00e-xact-e-notransaction.aspx
    If there is anything else regarding this issue, please feel free to post back.

  • Gmail - Compose email - Command-left/right shortcut not working

    Firefox 3.6.12
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    In the 'Compose mail' window of GMail the shortcut Command-left arrow or Command-right arrow to jump to respectively beginning or end of a line, is not working. Command-up/down (go to top/bottom) and option-left/right (jump per word) are all working fine.
    I already tried running Firefox in Safe mode but still the same issue. Also tried clearing the cache and all history but to no avail.
    In Safari the shortcut works fine but I'd like to stick to Firefox.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    This problem has been marked "solved" but isn't solved at all. This problem still exists, and is infuriating to any Mac/Firefox/Gmail users who like to stick to the keyboard. I've also noticed this happens in other google apps (blogger, docs, etc).

  • The basic command "caps on" is not working in dictation.

    I love dictation in the new Mac OS X; I even prefer it over Dragon Dictation because it's so convenient and I don't have to grab a headset to begin using it. I do a lot of professional writing for my job–and frequently need to type phrases that are title case. After upgrading to Mavericks I can no longer use the basic command, "caps on." It worked in the last version of OS X– but no longer. It's very frustrating.
    My system software is 10.9.5.
    Any idea how I can resolve this?

    Dictation is compromised by Pages v5.2.2 on Mavericks where the capitalization commands are literally transcribed, ignored, or cause an infinite processing loop. However, the dictation capitalization commands actually work in TextEdit, and Pages ’09 v4.3 on Mavericks. I recommend using what works, and lower your frustration threshold, as there is no fix for Pages v5.2.2 on Mavericks.

  • ALTER TABLE command with owner does not work

    I performed the following statement in a SQLplus script where the variables were filled some lines before:
    alter table '&ownername||'.'||&tablename' move online tablespace '&tablespacename';
    However this does not work. I am getting:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00903: invalid table name
    The variables are replace correctly by SQLplus and everything owner, table, tablespace exist.
    Can I (as SYSDBA) not alter the table of another user?

    If you wish to append characters immediately after a substitution variable, use a <font color=red size=3>period</font> to separate the variable from the character.
    SY.Ah, I had simply never done it that way nor seen it done that way.

  • Any idea why command-shift-delete is not working?

    I have had a MacBook Pro for a few years, and recently purchased a new iMac. the iMac arrived, and I transferred everything from the MBP to the iMac using the Migration Assistant. Worked very well, from what I can tell. The only thing I am unable to do is delete using shift-delete and empty the trash using command-shift-delete.
    I should also say that I did the initial setup of my iMac with a separate Admin account, then deleted that account to use the old account from my MBP on the iMac. I suspect this is a permissions issue, and I have seen articles that suggest deleting this trash account and letting OS X recreate.
    Any thoughts on what else to try?
    Thanks in advance for any help!
    Ineed911

    baltwo - I acknowledge that I wrote this incorrectly as shift-delete. That said, I am unable to delete a file/folder using command-delete. Also, unable to empty the trash using command-shift-delete.
    I had already tried resetting my keyboard shortcuts, and this did not help either.
    And these shortcuts worked on my MBP prior to the migration.
    do appreciate the reply and attempt.

  • How to use wait.for() /wait() commands for MAC? Not working...

    I am trying to run an external application on mac using runtime.exec() and it runs fine but after it runs it suddenly terminates the program. I have a waitFor() command after the runtime.exec() waiting for that program to end. If i comment out the waitFor() then the program terminates by going through the run command. The waitFor() worked fine for PC but doesnt work for MAC... anyone know what i did wrong or alternative way of listening for it? thanks!

    On the PC i have the following:
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("C:\\program Files\\QuickTime\\QuickTimePlayer.exe "
    +file.getPath());
    p.waitFor();
    It basically creates a process of QuicktimePlayer and runs the file specified. I then have p.waitFor() used to wait for the user to close the application so i can do listener stuff for it- it worked for PC.
    On Mac
    String b= "open"+ tempFile.getPath();
    Process p= Runtime.getRuntime().exec(b);
    System.out.println("before wait");
    p.waitFor(); .
    System.out.println("app. terminated");
    output:*
    "before wait".
    Program terminates before System.out.println("app. terminated"); but the application (quicktime) starts.
    if I do this:
    String b= "open"+ tempFile.getPath();
    Process p= Runtime.getRuntime().exec(b);
    System.out.println("before wait");
    // p.waitFor(); .
    System.out.println("app. terminated");
    output:*
    before wait
    app.terminated
    program terminates "normally" and I see "app.terminated".
    I used Eclipse so the "red square" turns red when running it and suddenly grays out when the player appears. So to me the program terminated before the p.waitFor(); If i commented out p.waitFor() then the program goes to the System.out statement and everything goes "fine". I tried using thread.wait(), this.wait() p.wait() etc. but i get errors saying they are not owner of the thread.
    hope this helps. thanks
