Command+Shift+; to spell check in Safari 5.1 causes reload of webpage, losing all my work?

When I'm writing something in a Safari window pain on a web page and there is a spelling or grammar error and it's detected by under lining the word with red dotted lines.  I use Command+Shift+; to bring up the spell/grammar tool.  When I click the Ignore button on the to skip/disregard the word, Safari reloads the webpage and I loss all my content.  It works ok if I accept the change thats offered or even use any of the other Buttons on the Spelling and grammar tool.  This just happens when I use Ignore Button since up grading to Lion (OS 10.7) and Safari 5.1.  Must be a Bug.  Any suggestions?

Go to   ~ / Library  / Caches / com.apple.Safari.
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash and restart your Mac.
If that didn't help, use the Report Bugs to Apple from the Safari menu bar.

  • Lion and spell check in Safari

I fill in a form on a web page then bring up "Spelling and Grammar" / "Show Spelling and Grammar."  It brings up a word that it thinks is mispelled but the word is spelled as I intended so I click on "Ignore."  The result of doing this is that everything that I have written disappears!
The same thing happens in Mail.  If there are any mispellings in this I apologize - I'm now afraid to use spell check!
Is there some setting that I have set incorrectly, or is this a major bug in Lion?  All worked correctly in my previous Snow Lepord installation.

If you read the the details it said it fixed:
The OS X Lion v10.7.1 Update is recommended for all users running OS X Lion and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:
Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari.
Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out.
Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections.
Resolve an issue that prevents transfer of your data, settings, and compatible applications to a new Mac running OS X Lion.

  • Spell Checker on Safari 2.0.4

is there a way to get spell-checker on it?
I checked the preferences... but nothing.
    any suggestions?

Spell Checker feature is still on "Coming Soon" list. Check a page: http://apple.com/safari/download/ You should wait for future version of Safari with these improvements

  • How do I enable spell check in Safari 5.1.3?

Right clicking and going through through the grammar and spelling options, no combination seems to give me what I had in 10.6.8... namely a red underline underneath mispelled words and the ability to ignore that or right click it for suggestions and other options.  Does this functionality still exist in Safari?  It does in Mail, but I can't spell check anything I type in a forum with Safari like I used to.
    Thanks!
    Safari 5.1.3 and OS 10.7.3

Not having your system software up to date may be part of the problem.
And could be Safari prefs are corrupted.
    Quit Safari.
    Go to   ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
    Relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder.

  • How to turn on russian spell check in Safari 5.1.1 for windows?

    Hi there!
I'm using Safari for a while as default system browser, but there is one feature that I used to in firefox - spellchecking. In Safari it check grammar only English, how can I add more languages there?

Yes, I have the same situation and this is impossible for this moment (Safari 5.1.7), I sugest send a message to Apple requesting this simple feature, like I do.

  • Since updating to 10.4.8 Safari Spell checking grayed out

Now I can not turn on Spell Checking in Safari because it is grayed out. What happened?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I found that for the spelling options to be available you must have the cursor in a text box. Then, I pressed command : to turn on spell checking. However, I had check spelling as you type checked and it unchecked it when I changed web pages. I had to reselect it.

  • Safari spell checker

Hi all, could someone help me with something that's probably staring me straight in the face anyway?
I want to change the spell checking in Safari from English US to English UK, and for the life of me can't remember how to do it.
    ta very muchley!

    Hi Sinisterish!
    That is a system-wide setting.
    Go to System Preferences/International/Language
Drag 'British English' to the top of the list.
    Job done!

  • Can no longer drag icons, copy paste, print, spell check, drag and drop etc

All of a sudden I can no longer do any of thoses things. Also I get a message that ClamAV can not find the scanning agent either (I use ClamXav). the spell check in Safari does not work either. it claims it can not find my printer, and who knows what I did not find yet.
did several restarts. switched users. dumped com.apple.finder.plist to no avail.
    any suggestions?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your apps work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • German as standard-language for spell check

How to set german as standard-language for spell check in safari?

I use Windows, and it is exactly as you said, Sir Hup.
I made the change, in the drop-down list in the dialog box, in my case from 'English' (which I have to assume is US English) to 'Australian English'.
The problem I am encountering is that making that change doesn't stick for the browser as a whole, but only for the input box on the tab, the dialog box was opened on.
How do I get the change to apply for spell checking in the browser as a whole?

  • Spell check disable?

Anyone know a way to disable the spell check in safari? I find it kind of annoying.

Edit menu > Spelling and select "Check spelling as you type" (which will uncheck that option).
Same thing works in other apps that use Apple's spellchecker (e.g. Mail).
    Hope this helps...

  • Why does Apple charge for spell check while MS Word offers it for free?

I have been using MS Office for Mac until recently when I could not open PowerPoint files sent to me. I bought iWork '08 to remedy that and right after I installed it, Spell Catcher said my trial period was up and that I could buy it. Of course, I'm NOT going to buy it! I tried running a spell check in Pages but it did not pick up on all of my purposely misspelled words. Do I really have to PAY for spell checking? I am not impressed with iWork '08!
As a side note: Does anyone notice how difficult it is to get into Discussions recently? Is it beacause of iPhone traffic?

Spell Catcher is not something that is installed with iWork as far as I am aware, I have spell check built in to Pages and keynote and I have never seen any mention of "spell catcher"
This is the company that makes SpellCatcher: http://www.rainmakerinc.com/
They are not affiliated with Apple. In fact, No development has occurred since last year.

  • I'd like a spell checker that'll work in 8.1?

Hey all, I had a spell checker for FF, updated it seems to have gone

The built in spelling checker works fine, but may need some attention to some details first. I use it and I also use an extension that checks spelling and Grammar.
    Spelling Check: SpellCheck:
:Firefox has a built-in spelling checker see
    *http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/tab_capacity/001_with_underscore.htm#spellcheck
    *http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/tab_capacity/001_with_underscore.htm#spellcheck_jumpstart
Once set up, you will see wavy lines under misspelled words. Right-click on the identified word to replace with corrected spelling or to add to the dictionary.
After fixing your spell checker and waiting a couple days so you are sure it is working properly with nice red wavy lines under misspelled words, I would install the extension that checks your spelling and grammar. For spelling the built-in spell checker is better.

  • How to remove spell checker suggestion?

My Pages now always autocorrects "hadn’t" to "hand’t".
How do I reset the Pages spell checker database? (No other programs are affected.) I can't find the spell check plist or the "localdictionary" and removing plists and rebooting doesn't work.
    Appreciate any help! Thanks!

I remember that this kind of behavior was already described.
If the app is set to flag typos, hadn't isn't flagged.
If I check the box so that AutoCorrect apply automatically the Spell Checker suggestions, hadn't is replaced by hand't
So, the workaround is simple :
uncheck the box asking AutoCorrect to apply automatically the Spell Checker suggestions.
    and of course
_Go to "Provide Pages Feedback" in the "Pages" menu_, describe what behaves wrongly.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'11

  • Mail spell check hangs on last misspelled word

    Hi everybody,
I have a bit of a dilemma that is quite annoying, and I would love it not to be. My spell checker in Mail (OSX 10.4.10) hangs on the last word when spell checking a message. I am able to check my spelling and choose Ignore/Guess/Correct etc. but when it reaches the end of my email it stops. Spell check will identify the misspelled word, but will not allow me to make corrections or ignore the word like it used to. The familiar tone and empty spell check box is no longer to be found.
But this does work in textedit! No problems what so ever. I have tried to scour these forums and tried a few things, but still nothing. I have also noticed this problem occurs in another user account.
I have checked the Ownership and Permissions of the spell checker file, deleted preference files, re-installed Mail by itself, performed an archive and install, completely reinstalled OSX and still nothing.
So now if any of you have an idea please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sebastian

    You're welcome.
I do not have that checked
Well, you should. Leaving messages on the server indefinitely may end up clogging up your mail account there and cause this kind of problems. Just specify After one week or After one month if you don't want messages to be removed from the server immediately.
