Command+Tab question (coming from Windows XP)

Bought my first mac...a MacBook with Leopard.
I'm having a hard time getting used to the Command+Tab app switching functions, as I'm used to Alt+Tab in Windows. There's one particular scenario that's bugging me...
- Open a TextEdit document window. Menubar shows TextEdit.
- Open a Finder window. Menu shows Finder.
- Click back on the TextEdit window. Minimize that window to the right side of the dock (running apps/windows???).
- Click back on the finder window to make it the active app/window.
- Use Command+Tab to cycle through the open apps and stop on TextEdit. Menubar will show TextEdit, but where's my previous document? It's still in the right side of the dock. Is there any keystroke that can then cycle through the open windows within the current app (minimized or not), so I can find my document?
- I noticed that after that last step, after I've Command+Tabbed into TextEdit with no TE windows open on the desktop, even using Expose won't show me the docked document window. Must I use the mouse to pull that document window out of the dock???

AFAICT, yes. Either that or select Window->minimized document. I rarely minimize windows, so I don't know if there's a shortcut to unminimize those windows.

First of all, is there an alternative to using a different Command+tab button? OR the F3 button to switch between windows? A lot of times I have more than ONE safari window open and I want to Command tab but Command+tab won't show the OTHER safari sites open. I use the F3 button also but is there another way to ALT+tab to DIFFERENT safari/firefox windows like on the Windows OS?
I was just wondering if IN TIME, Mac's will start running slower (like PC's) as you put more programs in. I know from experience, even by just staying on trusted sites, in about 2+ years your windows vista/7 will be a little slower. Welcome to the Mac world!
Mac OS let's you fully customize the keystrokes which you can quickly move between the windows you want. You will find these settings under System Preferences and Expose & Spaces under the personal area.
When you are in here, you can assign a different keys, or secondary key, to active the show all windows (what you are currently using as F3). Under the All Windows selection, you will see the default set to F3. Here you can change it if you would like, say assigning the right or left shift key to open the show all windows feature. In the box to the right which should be empty, you can even assign extra mouse keys (assuming you use an external mouse) to do the exact same thing, which I find makes your work-flow much easier. Play around with the mouse settings to get what you like (I use my mouse to show all windows when I press the scroll wheel). Hopefully this will be a sufficient solution to your needs. Regarding your second question, you will find that Mac's do not fall failure to the typical 'OS rot' that you see when using Windows in just a short year or two. The same goes for keeping your computer on for long periods. Where Windows will be noticeably sluggish after even a day or two of continuous use, Mac's can have an uptime of weeks without a drop in performance (a buddy of mine usually only restarts once a month unless the power flashes). You will likely only need to re-install the OS if something happens to the computer and it no longer functions properly. In this case, I recommend using Apple's build in Time Machine application (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427) however you will require an external hard drive. Time Machine takes a backup of your computer whenever you ask it and if you have to re-install the OS, it will restore everything to it's previous state.

Newb Questions - Transition from Windows to OSX

Hi, i still use windows on my PC but i would like to set up my OSX to operate in the same ways for some things.
1. Home / End keys on keyboard how can i change those to operate how they would on windows where when focusing on text clicking those keys takes you to the end of the line or the beginning. I tried changing my preferences like a couple sites said but it doesnt seem to work in anything but firefox.
2. When clicking on a ICON from the DOCK i would like it to open a new instance of the APP. For example i already have firefox open and i click on the firefox icon on the dock, i want it to open a new instance of the app, not bring the current instance of the app to focus.
3. I cant for the life of me figure out how to configure button 4 & 5 on my mouse. Mainly i want to use them for going forward/backwards like when browsing or evening using Finder.
4. When you have multiple versions of an app open you can visually see this in the Windows Task bar, is it possible to set up the DOCK or some 3rd party app to support that? I have 4 ICONS on my DOCK and thats all ill ever have so im not worried about space.
5a. When using spaces and i have lets say in section #1 firefox open and i move to section #2 and trying to open firefox it will just go back to section #1 and bring firefox to focus. So i would instead like it to open a new instance of the APP i click in that space.
5b. Is it at all possible with spaces to take a current instance of a program and somehow move it to a different space?

Offcourse, Java come with a very complete IO package and even more IO has been added in java 1.4

No idea, but Intellij really is very good.

Somebody has a few minutes for an alien coming from Windows / PC ?

Hi, I only used Windows / PC so far and though to give a try to Apple. I got an used iMac and don't know anything about this world. I'd like firs to upgrade from OS X 10.3.9 to 10.4 What's the most convenient (cheap) way to do this. I see there are some (gray) restore disks on eBay (usually 2, one for the OS and one for the applications?). Would those work? How is the license thing working? In Windows I am used with those product keys you have to provide during installation. Then can I get only the OS disk for 10.4 and, after install, just update online the existing applications on the iMac. Sorry if my questions don't make sense and any help and suggestion would be appreciated.

You have to be careful, Gray Discs are Machine specific. If you do this we can likely help you find some Discs...

The license to use it goes with the Install Disc actually, but there's no Serial# or Authorization or product keys you need to input... a bit more relaxed on this side of the aisle!

Getting color management correct on Mac coming from Windows 7 PC

Hey all,
I've just made my first purchase of a new mac mini, its my first Mac computer (having owned iPhone and iPad previously) and its running the exact same monitor as my PC (I'm just switching input channels from DVI to VGA channels).
I was interested in seeing how the Mac would display and print a business card (saved in PDF format) I recently created in CMYK in Illustrator on the Windows 7 machine (and printing to a local CMYK laser printer), so I brought it over to the Mac (the Mac is in its default setup) and opened the file and discovered the colors were REALLY washed out and unsaturated.
Thinking it might have been a Mac default PDF reader program colour issue I installed Adobe Acrobat reader and tried again and got the same result, so obviously its a system color profile / calibration setting?
The thing is when I look at webpages the color is almost identical from Mac to Windows PC on the same monitor (Mac just a fraction lighter probably 5% or so).
I checked the display settings on the Mac and can see it is running the current monitor profile (Dell 2407WFP-HC) the same one as what my Windows machine is running, running on the same monitor is a bit of a pain as I can't adjust the monitor brightness/other settings without making the PC brightness wrong.
Can someone tell me whats going on here, is it just a simple matter of the Dell monitor profile default setup for the Mac being different from the PC one?
Cany anyone tell me why there is such a difference with the PDF CMYK color and not in webpages color between the two?
PS. I did try calibrating my Dell monitor once before on the WIndows side with a xrite E1 but it wasn't compatible with the monitor) so currently the Dell profile on the Windows side is set to default calibration settings.

Hi Andrew thanks for that, I did try printing from Mac PDF to my CMYK printer and it came out unsaturated and the blues in my gradient were WAY out.
When I print from my Windows PC to my desktop CMYK printer it comes out really nice and vivid (maybe a touch oversaturated) but just about how I would want to it to look printed professionally/final.
Aside from the Mac not showing the PDF correctly I am trying to get a good workflow where I do a test print on my local CMYK printer and then send to my commerical knowing its pretty accurate, if I wanted to check my Windows workflow to see if my CMYK printer is somewhat color accurate the only way I could check is to have my actual Commercial printer do a test print for me is that correct?
I mean I've got the Pantone color chips here but as this is a CMYK design I don't have any spot colors put into the file only CMYK values for color.
75% of this business card design is made up of really rich white to blue to black gradient so its pretty crucial I get that pretty well spot on. I guess I could just take my printed version down to the print and tell them to match that?

Command tab - window doesn't switch

I use Command+tab to switch between windows. But many a times the window doesn't switch to, rather I get the options at the toolbar.

Command Tab cycles through open apps but does NOT load the window ??

So I've got several apps running....Mail, Safari, iTunes. I hit command tab and tab over to the program I want and then RELEASE.....The program is displayed at the top of the toolbar but where is my window ??? Its still sitting at the bottom of the tool bar waiting for me to search for it. What gives ? Why isn't command tab doing loading the window ?

Plenty of people, myself included, don't bother to minimize windows. We just keep everything open.

How to convert from windows media into iTunes without creating two albums with one featured song by itself?

I found out how to convert my windows media player music into my iTunes since I just joined the apple world. I was able to do one CD but I tried to convert Alicia Keys Element of Freedom and all of the songs converted except "Put It In a Love Song" featuring Beyonce. If it's going to do that, how do I keep it from doing all of my albums that have featured artists so it'll be in one album. I don't want the album and then the sole song sitting there. I've tried to find out if anyone's addressed that, but I'm not sure if people are addressing it because it's coming from Windows Media and not the store yet.

IOMeter hangs when running to a NFS share from Windows Storage Server 2012

I am trying to measure performance of NFS share coming from Windows Storage Server 2012 using IOMeter also running on windows Server 2012. I can create the share on WSS2012. Windows 2012 client does see the share. IOmeter does see the share, and I can start
running. But fairly quick IOMeter gets an error, and stops. After that NFS share on the client is not visible to IOMeter anymore. This happen every time.
I have used IOMeter to SMB shares a lot with no problem..

1) Can you use NFS share with NFS clients normally? I mean is it I/O Meter who has issues with streaming or do other apps have similar problems? Say normal copy to / from NFS share?

PS: I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
As for which OS X is installed.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
The version is noted there.

It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.

Command Tab not pulling up open windows from Dock

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, though I have looked:
Using Command-Tab to invoke Application Switch is very helpful. However I have an issue with iCal and with AddressBook sometimes. If they have an open window, minimised to the dock, it does not jump up on switching. Other apps do; just switching with command-tab to that app pulls up the most recent window. With iCal/AddressBook, it switches to the app; but the window remains in the dock and needs a click before it jumps up. Which kind of negates the app-switch in the first place, if you need to follow through with a mouse-click as well.

I believe that behavior can be attributed to any application with one minimized window. I get around that limitation by using the Hide feature. For example, just use the Address Book>Hide Address Book (⌘+H) command instead of Minimize (⌘+M). Using Apple + Tab will then open the Address Book application window as you would expect.
You can use the Keyboard to access a minimized window, but it is not convenient. (Control + F3) will give you access to the Dock. Then use the arrow keys to navigate to the Dock icon of your choice and hit enter. That action will open the application or window of your choice. Esc will cancel the keyboard action.

Page / Tab Title ... where is it coming from, so that I can change it?

I'm new to Application Express, and can't find the place where I change the title of a page (or is it part of a tab?). I can change the tab title, but can't seem to find where to change the title that seems to accompany it at the left of the page.
If I could include a screenshot, I'd be able to show this clearer, so will have to mockup what I mean ... hopefully it will be clear enough....
Below, I have a page with a single level of tabs - One was originally called "UNPLANNED_OUTAGE" and this was the title of the tab, and the title at the left of the screen. I have changed the tab title to the desired "Outage Summary", but can't find where I can change the title at the left of the screen (currently still "UNPLANNED_OUTAGE"). I want to change it to "Outage Summary" like the tab, or to something else, but can't find in Application Express where this is coming from.

I am not sure exactly what your question was. However, if I understand correcrly, you want to change the PAGE title (displayed on the typically blue frame of the MS IE window).
Go to the Page design mode, and in the PAGE region, click on the TITLE link. Edit the title.
If this is what you were looking for, great. I'll give you another unsolicited advice. Start your page title with a page number, e.g. "Page 651 - Form on Enforcement Action Requests."
That way, even when the thickest of your users report problems, or have suggestions for improvement, they will be able to tell you which page they are looking at...
