  • Brightness control from Apple keyboard

I have a LG 23'' Flatron W2361V and I can not control the brightness from the keyboard. Is this normal for a none Apple display or am I missing something? This is my first Mac Pro and I have only used Macbook Pro's and iMac's which have screens of course. The volume key works and other keys as well. Need help.

Apple displays allow control of the backlight brightness via USB. Non-Apple displays don't, so there is no way for the computer to change the backlight brightness. There is software to reduce brightness by changing the output from the computer, but this will reduce the number of brightness and color steps available, and since the backlight brightness is unchanged, will use more power.

  • Power On MacBook Pro from Apple Keyboard

I use my MacBook Pro closed and connected to an Apple 23" Display placed on top of the MacBook Pro on a stand and with an Apple Slim Keyboard + Mouse. Is there a way to turn on the computer without having to move to display to open the MacBook Pro to access the start up button?
    Thanks,
    Francesco Tonelli

No. The USB bus is not powered when the MBP is off, so there's no way to use that to turn on the computer. Instead, don't shut it down, just put it to sleep - then, a keypress on the external keyboard will wake the MBP. There's no need to shut down - personally, I never do, just let it sleep. I only reboot when required to by a Software Update.

  • Changing from apple keyboard to dell

My end is round and not a usb end i was hoping to find an adapter to make it a usb.  I do not care for the flat keys on my imac

Hello, sounds like you need a PS2 -> USB adapter...
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product_list.asp?cat_id=104
Note, not all PS2 Keyboards will work with a USB adapter.

  • Boot key commands with non-Apple keyboard

I seem to be unable to perform any "Startup key" sequences (resetting PRAM, boot into recovery mode, boot from CD etcetera).
I'm using a Logitech USB (model Y-BF37) keyboard directly connected to the computer but no startup key commands works. (The keyboard is designed for use with apple and has apples command-key symbols on the key nearest the spacebar).
I have tried searching but the general opinion seem to be that any USB keyboard should work.
I have this otherwise well working keyboard and I didn't want to spend money on an Apple keyboard.
Do I have to buy an Apple keyboard to use boot key commands??? I don't think I can borrow an apple keyboard from anywhere and I need to be able to boot into recovery mode...

It is indeed strange that it doesn't work, unless...
Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.

  • Windows 7 Blue Screen of Death from Apple Wireless Keyboard?

I've installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp 3.0 drivers on my Mac mini, and I suppose overall, I'm enjoying it. However, I'm getting a blue screen that seems almost random. Keyword is almost.
I've got my Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mighty Mouse paired, and they're both working well, however, I do believe I am getting some blue screens from my wireless keyboard.
It seems, at random intervals (usually when I haven't touched the keyboard and mouse for awhile) I get an IRQL blue screen and no information about what's exactly causing it. For example, if I'm sitting in the other room listening to music for awhile, and I come back and press the "next" media button on my keyboard, it'll crash and give me the blue screen. However, I've also tried pressing another random button (shift) to "wake" the keyboard if it had fallen asleep, which also results in a blue screen. The blue screens ONLY show up when I give input via the wireless keyboard. Or, if I leave the computer on overnight to download a file or something, the screen will sleep (which it should) then I'll press a button on the keyboard, the screen will stay asleep, and the computer will restart. Which is just a hidden blue screen I'm assuming.
I've tried reinstalling Windows (Clean/fresh install of course), installing/uninstalling drivers, pairing and re-pairing. I've also removed unnecessary/non-Windows 7 drivers that were installed with Boot Camp.
Outside of this blue screen, I am quite impressed with Windows 7. I just can't figure out what's going on. Is there any place I can get a description of what's causing this crash? Does anyone know what's happening or know a solution to this?
Thanks in advance, if you need more details, please ask.

Experiencing exactly the same symptoms, bugcheck/bluescreen only when touching the Apple wireless keyboard after a period of inactivity.
I have an 20" iMac, just upgraded Leopard -> Snow Leopard latest minor version and updated to Boot Camp 3.1 hoping they provided a fix, but the driver at fault (keymagic.sys) doesn't look updated and the issue is still there
Hopefully someone from Apple dev support is reading this, here's all the info I could squeeze from the crash dump:

I have a macbook and when I power it on and then select myself as a user...It won't power up. It stays in the white screen with the apple logo. I am online currently under 'guest user'. Is there anything I can do from the keyboard to fix this??? Help!!!

Could you specify the model of MacBook and the OS X it's running, please? Some of the advice or references vary along with the system, so this could be helpful to formulate a reply. I've never used a Guest User selection, but do have more than one User.
If the computer does not have an optical drive, you may be able to boot it into a recovery disk mode or something; in an attempt to see what is wrong and maybe fix it.
    Good luck & happy computing!

In Mail 7.3 on my Retina MacBook Pro on OS 10.9.4, how can I type from the keyboard into a mail message using the Apple Symbols font?
When I select the Apple Symbols font from the list accessed from under Format/"Show fonts"/collection-all fonts/Apple Symbol, and then continue typing, I get normal letters, if in a slightly different font.
How can I type using the Apple Symbol font?  I want to use that font to include keyboard and cursor selections of actual screen symbols to help write easily understood explicit computer lesson emails to my 92 year-old mom from a few hundred miles away.

  • Opening quicklook with spacebar from Apple Full Keyboard

    Hi,
    I have a problem with
"Opening quicklook with the spacebar on AppleFullsize keyboard from my local machine"
And yes, I only have that exact problem....
    Things that work:
    - Opening quicklook with the spacebar from my Macbook's keyboard on my local machine

I thinks this is extremely wierd. (I work in IT for 20 years now... this is not possible)
Somehow OSX only denies Quicklook from a externally attached Apple Keyboard on my Local machine. The function is obviously working as you can see when I try it remotely and with other keyboards.
Anybody who has a clue deserves Cake!
    Thanks Already

I know your Quick View post is from last November, but did you ever find a solution? I have the same issue, also using an Apple full size external keyboard on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion. Thanks.

My apple keyboard had some problems, the store replaced it for me. I had to sign in to my computer, and couldn't get to pair the keyboard with the computer, as could not sign in. I know there is a command that lets you override this, does anyone know which buttons to  press.  I gather when you do this, a box comes up and pairs the two with a number you have to type in.

The "Windows flag" key on PC keyaboard in Commans, "Alt" is option.
Go to Logitech website to see if they have Mac compatibility software (Logictech Control Center) to make mappings a bit more complex).

After I put my iMac to sleep the keyboard or mouse won't wake it up. I have to push the power button to awaken it. Wake from sleep is enabled in bluetooth preferences so that is not the problem. Otherwise keyboard and mouse are working fine. Any help would be appreciated.

Regrettably, I can't offer a solution to the problem stated in the title. Instead, I experience the same problem.
    Wireless Mighty Mouse circa 2007
    Wireless Apple Keyboard circa 2007
Bluetooth dongle (a bluetooth thingy connected to a USB port)
Things worked fine until an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Following the upgrade there were several mouse related issues. Those were resolved. One issue remains: waking by use of mouse or keyboard.
The setup (Same for keyboard and mouse)
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Keyboard Connected --- Keyboard Paired. The "Discoverable" box is checked.
    Digging deeper
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Advanced --- "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" --- This option is unchecked and is greyed out, inaccessible. Two of the other options are checked and available: the options about opening the Bluetooth assistant and the one about prompting incoming audio.
I've searched other posts. However, many of the other posts seem to conflate this Wake/Sleep issue with various connection issues. Thus, the advice given is a bit confusing to this amateur. Might one of you experts have a solution to this annoying little problem?
    Thanks for your interest.
