Commenting an unprotected PDF

Hi to all,
I don't seem to be able to find an answer in the forum, so I'd like to ask everybody to point me towards a given answer, or a new one.
I (on a Mac) and my colleagues (on Macs and PCs) would like to use Adobe Reader (v. 9) to comment PDF files. But both on documents I generated with FrameMaker 9 and OpenOffice 3, without any restriction applied, we cannot activate the Marker and Note tools in the Reader's toolbar.
Commenting and highlighting is allowed with Apple Preview and a shareware my colleagues are trying. Is there we should activate to have comments on Adobe Reader too?
Greetings,
Paolo

As I use it, it's a bit different.
1) PDF drafts are generated with a publishing program.
2) Then, they are sent to the editors, who add their comments.
In my workflow, there has never been any need of an intermediate passage through Acrobat Pro, since comments returned to me after having been done in Preview.
Now, one of my colleagues using a PC wants to comment my PDFs. There is no tool like Preview installed as standard in Windows, so we discovered this problem.
Having to edit the PDF file in Acrobat Pro at each draft would not be a huge work, but if I could not do it I would be a bit more reliefed. When you are in a hurry, having to repeatedly deal with what looks like sort of a software protection becomes a hassle.
If this is really a software protection, what is its scope? You have to use Acrobat Pro to finalize the PDF file for the final release. In any case, you would need it.

  • How do I change default settings in the author field when I edit or insert a comment in a PDF?

How do I change default settings in the author field when I edit or insert a comment in a PDF?

Generally it gets this info from the Identity in the preferences. Unfortunately, I know of no way to change the Login Name that shows up in the comments. I need to look at newer versions of Acrobat on other machines, this is AA8.

  • How do I make comments on a pdf document that was sent to me?

I have windows XP and Reader 7.0.   Is there a way to enable "edit" so that I can make "comments" on a pdf. document that was sent to me?  withought spending $$$ for pro?

Thanks Sabian.  It took me a while to figure out that "close Acrobat Reader 7.0" actually meant "delete it".   After loading 10.1.2 I followed the instructions to send my pdf file and Internet Explorer decided to "quit" right in the middle of the process. ??  I'll try to use Chrome to see if that helps.

  • Cannot import a set of comments in the PDF to a Word document

I'm desperately trying to import a set of comments in a PDF to a Word document and cannot do so in Acrobat9. Time is of the essence. I keep getting the following message:
When PDF was created, the content and it was not tagged.  exporting comments into a Word document will only work if the PDF is a tagged PDF.
To create a tagged PDF, you must select "change conversion settings" from the Adobe PDF menu, and check the box labeled "enable accessibility and reflow with tagged PDF."
I had no idea where to look to make this change--where is the Adobe PDF menu??? I tried doing research in the Adobe help information, and it directs me to go to: advanced > Accessibility > Add tags document. However when I click these menu items, the menu item "add tags to document" is gray and cannot be selected.
So now I've got a 1200-page draft filled with comments and I can't get them to the owner.  I'd appreciate anybody's help. I never had a problem importing comments in previous releases of Adobe Acrobat.

Just to add a bit more information:
We use a tool called the Arbortext Editor to write our source and use the transform tool to automatically create a PDF of the source.

    Hi Steve Whipple,
This Link (Acrobat Help | Importing and exporting comments ) seems relevant to your query. Please let me know if it helps you export comments to xfdf file.

  • How can I insert a comment into a PDF stream?

I am creating a PDF  stream manually (long story, don't ask) and when
debugging the  resulting PDF by looking at the raw PDF stream, it would
be really  handy if I could tell which parts of the PDF stream came
from which  parts of my code, so I was trying to find some way to
insert  comments into the PDF stream.
    I came up with this:
    (my comment here)  pop
which I thought would create a string object on the stack and  then pop
it off, but this PDF code still confuses Adobe Reader.
Any  suggestions on how I can insert stuff into the PDF stream that
doesn't affect Adobe Reader, but lets me distinguish different parts
    of the PDF stream?
    Thanks,
    Chris

the best is to insert screenshot directly in keynote. If it's for a paper version save everything as pdf and compile with "combine pdf".

  • Count the number of comments in a PDF file automatically?

    Hello O Experts,
My documentation team members use Acrobat and Reader 8, and frequently need to count the number of comments in a PDF file. Is it possible to count the number of comments automatically? We can't find this functionality anywhere, and have to resort to manual counting. Since our PDFs can contain thousands of comments, this is very time-consuming. I've tried searching the Web and these forums, but the words "count" and "comments" are too frequent in other contexts to find anything useful...
    Thanks and best regards,
    --M.T.

    Hi again sypark,
That is a great idea, and it works!
I would actually search on a more unique phrase - for instance, "Subject:" - that definitively occurs a single time per comment. The reason is:
There are many types of comments, not just sticky notes... you have highlights, text deletions, text insertions, replacement text, attachments, callouts, and so on. But each of them has a "Subject:" in the summary.
It's best to avoid searching for the comment names because they differ by language (an important issue when you work with colleagues in multiple countries). For example, the name of the "Highlight" comment type in French is "Texte surligné" - so you'd have to search for the latter term to get an accurate count.
In any case, your method is flexible and allows for easy customization of comment counts. Many thanks for your effective help!
    Cheers,
    --Michael

  • Can I merge comments from 2 pdfs with Adobe Acrobat online?

Can I merge comments from 2 pdfs with Adobe Acrobat online?  If so,  how?

    Hi gignc,
You can't merge comments using any of the Acrobat.com online services (ExportPDF, Adobe PDF Pack, and so on). But you can with an Acrobat subscription. Please see Adobe Acrobat X Standard * Publish comments from other reviewers from instructions.

  • Commenting on Shared PDF

Is it possible for people to comment on a shared PDF the way they can on a shared InDesign file? I've uploaded PDFs to my workspaces but I don't see any way to comment on them.
I saw a message somewhere on the Adobe support forum that said that people cannot edit PDFs online. I don't want to edit the PDF online; I just want them to be able to add notes to the PDF proxy that they see on Acrobat.com.
I have a PDF that a client sent me. I tried placing it into an Indesign CS5 file and posting that, but I couldn't add the file to a review. Why not?

Subject: Re: Commenting on Shared PDF
At this time the Adobe Reader and Acrobat software is the intended and designed software for commenting on PDF files as part of the review process.
That merely makes Acobat.com a nice front end for viewing PDF files, not actually doing any collaborating with them. You should have called it buzzword.com instead.

  • Readers can't comment on my PDFs

I was recently upgraded from Acrobat 8.1 Standard to Acrobat 11.0 Stamdard. Most people here have Acrobat Reader 9.
I want to be able to send out PDFs for review and have them comment in the PDF. My security settings allow commenting. Howeve, when someone open the PDF in Reader 9, comment is disabled.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks
    Keith

Reader 9 doesn't allow commenting unless you specifically enable the document for it. Acrobat doesn't need this, nor does Reader 11. Reader 10 allows limited types of commenting with non-enabled documents. You enable a document for commenting in Acrobat 11 by selecting:
File > Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable Commenting & Measuring
    and this will work too:
File > Save As Other > Reader Extended PDF > Enable More Tools
The latter will also allow filled-in forms to be saved.

  • How to restore shared review comment back to PDF?

Shared review backups the comment in XML files. If I lose the comments, how can I restore the comments back to PDF?
I try both import comment and import form data using the XML file, but nothing shows up. It seems only FDF or XFDF file works. Do I need to convert the XML file into FDF or XFDF? If yes, how?
    Thanks for the hep.

Acrobat doesn't import the XML file directly that is used in the Shared Review process.  Attempting to build the importable files is not pretty either way.  I wouldn't recommend doing this but you can do it by hand using the XML file data into the correct file syntax for proper import but you need to be familiar with the FDF or XFDF file format.  Otherwise if you are familiar with XSLT and doing transformations you should be able to do it that way too with an custom application.

  • Summarize Comments shifts my PDF to the left

When I use the summarize comments tool, the pdf automatically shifts to the left.  This results in text being chopped off on the left and a white strip on the right.  It appears this only happens to PDFs that have been created using a scanner.  PDFs that have been generated from software like ACAD or Microsoft Word, seem to be fine.  The screen capture below shows the offset for this page, which is part of a multipage document.  This page is a PDF that had been scanned due to a signature being present.  Before the summarize comments button was pressed, all text was centered perfectly on the page.  This page did not have any comments associated with it, but the other pages in the document did. The other pages did not suffer from the offset because those pages were created from the native files.

This solved my issue, regards Jeroen

It sounds like the "Zoom" feature is being activated. Check in "System Preferences">"Universal Access" to make sure it's off. You can also turn it on or off with the key combination "Option, Command, Number 8"

  • How can I see shared review comments in a PDF when connected to a SharePoint server over a VPN?

I am using Acrobat Pro XI on Windows 7.
When I issue a shared review, hosted on our work SharePoint server, I always encounter problems when accessing my work network from home, over a VPN. My comments do not get published, and I cannot see comments that reviewers have published.
I issue the review PDF as an attachment when I open the review, and all reviewers save a local copy of this file. When I open the PDF, the "Welcome back to shared review..." screen is never updated with the number of comments. The server status always seems to show green, but the comment reporting mechanisms do not behave as they do at work. When I click Publish comments, I am usually asked if I wish to take ownership of unpublished comments by other reviewers (to which I click No). When I return to the office, everything seems to "just work" again. But this is hugely inconvenient if I am out of office for days on end.
I had this problem with my previous version of Acrobat, and no satisfactory solution was ever reached. I am most dismayed to find it is still present in version XI.
    Please can anyone advise?

I don't know if you solved this issue yet. But we have the same issue in the pass, and clean the log files under "\Synchronizer\resources\" folder seems to be a solution. Here is the thread talking about it.
