Comments with IPhoto '08

I have ~ 6700 photos in my IPhoto (vs. 5) library, all with comments added (names, places, etc.). Many also have altered date/time info. I would like to be able to move photos to other computers but cannot transfer comments or date/time edits with them. I've tried IPhoto Library Manager over internet, which did not work, probably because my internet access was too slow. I was told the the newest IPhoto that comes with ILife '08 does allow exporting pictures with the comments and date/time edits. I'm concerned about whether upgrading to ILife '08 will affect the existing comments and date/time info. I don't want to lose the info on all these photos, now or in the future.
My questions: If I upgrade to ILife '08, will I lose existing comments and changes to date/time stamps in my current library, or will they be incorporated into the upgraded version of the library?
Also, I'm considering upgrading to 10.5 Leopard at the same time; will this affect the IPhoto comments?
Thanks for your input,
Margaret

Margaret:
There is a one time way to write the comments, keywords and titles to the original file of each photo in your library. Follow the workflow of Tutorial #1 thru Step 7. That will take care of the current photos in the library. Then you can transfer any unedited photo to other computers, Mac or PC and the comments, keywords and titles will go with them.
If the file has been edited you can do a Revert to Original and then do the transfer.
If you're trying to send the photos to another Mac in your home try connecting them with an Ethernet cable and setup a mini LAN or with a Firewire cable and use the Firewire Target Mode method of connecting.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Edit/give EXIF comment with iPhoto 08

    Dear all,
I am currently setting up a hotoblog (basically a simple web album...) using a relatively new photoblog software (still in the alpha-state...) that appears very powerful and simple to me - named "picoplog". The software simply scans a folder on the server, takes every subfolder in it as an album, and gives names to the album and the photos by the folder and file names.
Additionally, You can add a bit of further information by supplying an EXIF comment, which is read and displayed. The website states that this EXIF comment can be written by "any photo management tool" (including iPhoto) - but the developers don't have a Mac (yet... ), and I think that they're wrong: I tried hard the last weekend to make iPhoto write the comments I give to the EXIF header (I mainly store RAW files from my EOS, and export photos the JPEG or PNG) - but with no result.
My questions to You now: is it right that iPhoto does not write to the EXIF comment field? Is there a tool (plugin) that You are aware of that can do so? I tried it with Picturesync (from Holocore) - it supports a lot of Metadata - but obviously only as IPTC/XMP...
At the moment I am using EXIFtool by Phil Harvey, and an Apple Script (Tierprogramm by Florian Poeck) for simplification (no command line...) - but the usability is bad... at least for me, as I'd like to use the comments I have given (and still want to store) in iPhoto, and not comment any photo again with an additional program, because iPhoto ignores the (maybe simple-minded, but quite standardized...) EXIF-comments.
Do You have any suggestions to this? Thanks a lot - and enjoy Your day!
    Björn

    Hi, OldToad!
Thanks for Your information and contribution!
I tried what You wrote again with iPhoto 08, and want to show my results. According to those experiments, there does seem to be a difference between the comment and title iPhoto writes to a JPEG-file and the comment that I called "EXIF-comment" (I got the name and discrimination from the discription of the jhead-tool that has been named earlier in this thread). Well, here is my example:
    1. I exported a JPEG file from iPhoto using the option "include keyword and title" checked; this file can be found on the photoblog system I am using under the following URL: http://marckgraph.de/pix/fr-uuml-hling/img-1101; the title is taken from the filename (I didn't change it...), but below it, there should be written the EXIF-comment, as is said on the homepage of this blog system that can be found at: http://daubau.it/picoplog/ - obviously, there is nothing. Still, if You click on my photoblog on "large size, You get the original JPEG file from the server (the blog makes a smaller JPEG to display, which strips some metadata from the file) - if You save this "original" image to the desktop and get the file-information (apple-i), You can see that the comment is in fact written into the file metadata - but not displayed in the blog.
    2. I took the same file and processed it with the EXIFtool disussed above and added what is called the "EXIF-comment"; the file can be viewed at: http://marckgraph.de/pix/fr-uuml-hling/oberbaumbr-uuml-cke . Don't get confused - I also renamed the file, thus it has the title "Oberbaumbrücke" displayed now; the text written below the title is what I have added as "EXIF-comment" to the file, and what was named "EXIF-comment" on the blog; it gets expectedly displayed by the blog system...
I know it's confusing! Just wanted to show that the EXIF comments according to my experience seems to be sth. different from the JPEG-comments that iPhoto writes (the iPhoto metadata are obviously called IPTC - or sth. like that; this appears to me somewhat more modern, but I don't know...). Maybe I should consider asking the guys who develop this nice photoblog software if they want to consider supporting the IPTC metadata, if this is more modern... though I am not sure about that
Thanks for the information about iPhoto data backup. I use Timemachine here - and have hoped so far that this will keep me safe... I will try to go through Your recommendations again - sounds like sometimes iPhoto doesn't know what it's doing to the "new" library (which is a UNIX-package and not a simple "folder and subfolder" thing, as I have learned here before... - though I was told not to worry about it earlier...) BTW - I have everything in one album so far - is that a bad idea?
Okay - anyway, thanks again! And have a nice day!
    Regards,
    Björn
P.S.: Maybe an addition: I have heard from the guy writing the "Tierprogramm" (which is a graphical user interface for the EXIFtool named before) told me that he uses the EXIF-comment field to store the photographer information (for copyright purposes). Maybe that's what it is originally intended to be (thus: a copyright comment, not a description of image topics)...

  • Copy photos from Mac to PC with iphoto comments

I currently have all my photos on a mac and use iphoto to organize them. All my photos have comments through iphoto that include things like date, location, and people in them. I have to move all my photos to my PC, but cannot seem to get the comments to move with the photos. Any ideas?

    Any ideas?
None that you will especially like.
You'll have to use a third-party application to extract photos with their comments from iPhoto.

  • Help help!!!!! with iPhoto'11 9.4.3

i got this problem with iphoto..i transfer my photos ussing the SD card, it finish and then i delete the contents everything good on this point, then iphoto close itself .. so then i open again iphoto and the pics that i transfer desappear,, what's wrong with iphoto.. what do i do? Help

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
And as leonieDF mentioned never let iPhoto delete the photos from a memory card or camera. Always reformat the card using the camera after making sure the photos are safe and sound in the library.

  • File management questions with iPhoto 8

I am new to iPhoto, not just version 8. I need to understand a few basics about the Apple way of handling photos. First off let me say that I have a MacBook Pro and a Windows XP desktop pc. I just set up an external harddrive as my storage space for my photos. They were on my pc, but I want to take advantage of iPhoto and manage them via my mac laptop. So I formatted the external drive as a mac drive, purchased a copy of MacDrive so that my pc can read/write to this drive as well and transferred all of my photos to the external harddrive. 14 gigs. I suppose I should now delete them off my pc...
Before I moved my photos, I organized them all into appropriate folders, consolidating them and removing any duplicates that occured sometimes when I accidentally re-imported the same photos from my camera.
I imported the photos on my external harddrive into iPhoto's photo library, using the alias approach instead of having iPhoto make copies of the photos. (I don't need to waste yet another 14 gigs!) So now I have numerous Events, most of which relate directly to the folders I created for my photos. I noticed however that in some instances, iPhoto created multiple events for photos within the same folder.
    Here are my questions...
If I merge events in iPhoto, I noticed my folders do not change. Am I just messing around with the aliases, sorta like creating playlists in iTunes? Is there any way to keep things in sync between my folders and my events, so that the contents of my folders match the contents of my events, or is this unwise or unnecessary?
If after I have imported my photos into iPhoto, what happens when I merge my folders of photos on my harddrive, outside of iPhoto? Does iPhoto keep up or do I have to somehow update my iPhoto library? Refresh it? What happens when I add more photos, say with my pc? Do I have to import the new folders of photos into iPhoto each time?
I also have a question about keywords. From the demo movie I watched on apple.com, I saw that one can search for photos using keywords. In the demo, the presenter typed the name of a person and all the pictures of that person appeared. If I want to do this, does this mean I have to add for example the keyword "David" to every picture David is in? Can the name simply appear in the title for the photo and still get picked up within the search results? Is there an easy way to assign keywords to multiple photos at the same time?
Thanks for helping me start out on the right foot!
    Paul

    Dani:
You don't have to duplicate photos when using iPhoto in it normal, copy to library, mode. Once you import the files you can delete the ones used to import. However, if you're a professional then you've probably read the DAM book, Digital Asset Management, and it implies multiple backup copies.
Files imported in the alias mode retain the color profile that was added by the camera. If you edit in iPhoto then the resulting modified will will have a default profile. In my case the profile went from sRGB IEC1966-2.1 to Camera RGB Profile. But if you use Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto you can manage the profile with it.
I like iPhoto 7 much more than 6. It's editing capabilities are much improved but still no match for PS. It also writes the metadata, comments, keywords and title to the file when exporting. It also allows you to modify the EXIF Capture Date and write it to the original file.
As with any application you must have backups and backups. Also always keep a minimum of 10 GB free space, 15 or more if you'll be doing some heavy editing with PS or work with video. That's important. So that means an external FW hard drive or two for redundancy backups. That is if you're serious about it.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. • Need advice on comments in iPhoto and sending photos to other people

    Two related questions.
    1) I'm on a study abroad and I want to send photos home to my family. My parents use computers and my grandparents don't, so I want to email photos to my parents so that they can print them and show them to my grandparents. I want to include captions with these photos. iPhoto has a description box for each photo, so that seems like a natural place to type captions. But then, I can't figure out how to email the photos with the descriptions, or how to print them with the descriptions. Preferably I'd like to send an entire album as an iPhoto backup or something like that and then my parents could open it in iPhoto and print the photos on photo paper with captions underneath them. This seems like a fairly obvious feature for a program like iPhoto so I'm feeling stupid that I can't figure it out.
    2) I also want to post photos online to send to people. I've been using Kodak albums but they don't let you post photos at high resolution or full screen. They also don't do video. Any advice for other sites that are better? I really am only interested in free sites, unless the fee for a pay site is very very low. Bonus points if you know how to use iPhoto comments on kodak or other galleries so I don't have to type them twice.
Edit: I do have the ophoto program which makes uploading to kodak easier, but I haven't been able to get it to browse my iphoto library directly, I have to export the files to finder first and get them from there. So I can't tell if it would use the comments if it worked properly.
    Thanks!

    Terabithia:
When you select the photos to email and click on the eMall button at the bottom you'll get a window which the option to include the Titles and/or Comments. The resulting email will have the title and/or comment below each photo as seen in this screenshot . If the recipient does not have a Mac they may not get the picture above the title and comment as we see in the email that we compose but they can match the title (which is the file name unless changed) to the file name and get the comments pertinent to that photo.

Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library

Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally.

  • Exporting photos with Iphoto '08

    tr3der:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where are you wanting to export the comments to? If you export a photo that has a comment assigned to it that comment will be written to the file that gets exported. Applications that can read the metadata will be able to see the comments as well as the titles and keywords if that check box is selected.

  • Transferring spotlight comments to iPhoto

I've got several hundered scanned photos on a hard drive with spotlight comments attached.
Is there any way to transfer those spotlight comments into iPhoto's comment field when I import the files into iPhoto, or will I have to type them all in manually?
If there isn't a way to do it through iPhoto, it seems like the kind of task that an Automator script could be written to handle, but I'm not very familiar with that.

    Chip:
Unless you can find an Applescript that will do the job you'll probably have to enter them manually. Automator does not have any actions that I could find that could do the job. But then, I'm not overly proficient with Automator.

  • My first Mac and first experience with iPhoto.  Need help

Hello everyone. I just purchased my first Mac, a Mini, last week and I'm trying to learn how iPhoto works. I've been able to import picturs from my NAS (network attached storage) drive which holds all our photos, music and videos.
However, when I took pictures over the weekend, I wanted to put them on the NAS as well and have them automatically import into iPhoto. I like that iPhoto lets you put a description about the pictures, but I can't find a way to type a description and then set iPhoto to save the pictures to my NAS drive.
I ended up just saving them to the NAS drive and then importing again and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates. The problem with that is I get folders called thumbnails and then I get messages telling me the Thumbs.db files are not readable and those are coming from my camera card or the NAS drive, maybe because it was formatted on a PC. I know Thumbs is a PC item.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do this and if so, how do I do that? And how do I enter descriptions about my old photos to make them easier to find during a search?
Thanks for the help. While the Mac is very similar to my old PC, there sure are a lot of things I'm unfamiliar with. But with time and some help from experts like you, I'm sure I'll get comfortable with it.
    John

    John
iPhoto is a photo organiser - that is a database. Like any database the data has to be imported into the application.
What format is that NAS? iPhoto does not sit happily on disks that are not formatted for Mac OS X (journalled). You will find issues with saving changes to the db and with sharing pics among other apps.
You can put a library on an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do t
No. For a start, filenames have no relevance in iPhoto - it's all about visual organisation. You can attach titles, keywords and comments to pics, of course, and can add them to the File on export.
If you want to set the pics in a spot, then do that with the Finder and thereafter import them. You can use a batch file renamer such as FileList to rename the files prior to import.
and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates.
Using a Referenced rather than a Managed library means that iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
As a general comment: iPhoto is a bit different from most photo apps. It's happiest when it manages the files and lets you go on to manage your Photos. That's a key distinction though, between Files and Pictures. iPhoto is about Pictures, not Files.
You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - there is never a need to go into the Photo Library on the Hard Disk. To find and access photos:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To use an external editor
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
By all means post again if you need more info.

  • Can I use iMovie 09 but stay with iPhoto 08???

    Hello,
QUESTION: Can I install iLife '09 but still keep iPhoto '08 and use iPhoto '08 instead of iPhoto '09 but use the other iLife '09 programs??
BACKGROUND: I am installing Leopard (after much delay...) and I believe iMovie '09 (part of iLife '09) has a timeline and more features (vs iMovie '08) plus easier to use etc. So I think I want to make my first projects with my 8 hours of vacation videos via my Canon FS100 using iMovie 09 - can put in chapters and such, too I believe.
BUT in trialing iPhoto 09 on another computer, I see that for now at least, I don't want the geographic info / the faces etc. and kinda prefer to stay with iPhoto '08 for now with my 25,000 photos over the past 5 years...
    *Is that possible to do?-*
    Thanks for any comments--
    Regards,
    Steve

Thanks for the fast and informative reply!
    1. iPhoto 09: This converts all the iPhoto Library photos to another format not recognized by iPhoto 08. OK I have several copies on several LaCie external HD's - but I'm wondering if my 30 gb 2008 iPhoto library will now turn into 50 gb in iPhoto 09???
    2. Speed: I've been afraid that on my 3 year old MB iPhoto 09 may run much slower than iPhoto '08. You say not much performance hit - but I enjoy fast-- and next Mac (will that be #15 in 20 years?!- at least!!) likely to be a MB Pro - or maybe the fastest desktop I can afford?!?
    3. I'm not using FaceBook / Flickr at this time - just MobileMe
iMovie 09: I hope one can insert chapters! Would not want to have to go via HDiMovie06 / garageband to do this-- hey, I've got everything downloaded, but haven't made a single movie / DVD yet! Really I'd like to just get about an hour or two of my 8 hours onto a DVD that looks OK - for a first "YES!" - would you say iMovie '09 is going to be easier to "master" than 08?
Thanks very much!! -- and if anyone can let me know if iPhoto 08 / iPhoto 09 can exist together - and if so, how to do this during installation - cuz it seems iPhoto 09 deletes previous iPhotos...

    Wow. Okay...
I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.
My only comment would be re: your computer specs:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.
