Common cracking in the macbook where lid closes : prevention methods?

Many of you with the white or black macbooks may have experienced a cracking on the edge of the palm rest. This happens due to the magnets on the lid i believe... I was wondering if anyone knew any prevention methods to keep this from happening. I already had to get the top case replaced once. If you know what I am talking about, I was wondering if anyone had any input on any prevention methods to stop such a thing from occurring. I was thinking putting a sticker there might prevent cracking.
also I have a hairline crack where the side of the macbook meets the palm rest. (think the plastic where the glowing light/ir thing is on the right... except my crack is on the left. Apple won't replace this... could there be anything that could stop the spread of the crack? (I was thinking super glue...)
thanks,

Hi torsenstarrow,
From what I've seen, the cracking is a result of excessive force applied when closing the lid. I think the reason why some MacBooks crack (and other don't) is a combination of the user and the strength of the plastic in the top case. I think, quite frankly, it's just a design issue.
I use to observe people close their MacBook lid, when I worked at the Genius Bar, and some people would gently close it until it made contact with top case. Others would get it to the point where it would fall on it's own and let it slam. Then there were always the people who "slam" the lid closed. Suffice to say, the third category of operators were always the frequent visitors to the bar.
I'm not saying the cracking is user-fault, but I do believe it's combination of user and design. Unfortunately, where one starts and the other ends is where it's impossible to point fault.

Would a crack in the MacBook Pro display cause a similar "fade-to-white" symptom as a bad graphics processor?

  • Why doesn't the Macbook work lid-closed??

I've only just discovered that the Macbook will try to go to sleep every time i close it's lid. For me, this is possibly the most annoying thing that any laptop could ever do!
I know the Macbook is designed for lid closed use when external keyboard, mouse and display are connected. But if it doesn't overheat in this situation, then why should it be a problem without any of these connected!?
I use my laptops esentially as desktops. Download and encode video overnight, play mp3's 24/7 and don't want to leave the lid open for dust to collect just to be able to do these things.
Can anyone think of anything to explain this crazy behaviour? Or vouch for the use of software to work around this, such as sleepless.
    Macbook (White) 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   - 2Gb RAM, 80Gb HD

Wtihout knowing Aple's specific reasons I would think that it were a safely reason. With the lid closed it would hence but unknown if it were on. There are no lights or anything to say this so potentially you can grab it and move it as though you would when off. Thi s could be extremely bad, even with the sudden motion sensor.
When it is connected to an external monitor you will at minimum have to disconnect it and USB mouse/keyboard which does give you time to think that it's on.
I have the same issue as you do though as I have a PowerBook currently running as a server. I use a very high tech device to keep the lid open just enough to keep the thing from sleeping.… it's called an eraser.

  • MacBook Pro lid closes

I purchased a MacBook Pro 17" a couple of weeks ago now and noticed that when the MacBook is at a 90 degree angle the lid closes.
For example when I'm using my MacBook on my lap and have knees up the screen closes. It seems to be the hinges are loose. Is this normal? Or are the hinges week and should I contact apple?
*sorry if this is not the right field within the forum but I thought it's related to display just more hardware side**
    Thanks for any response.

And I quote- If the position of the screen is affected by gravity, there's a problem with the hinges.
90degrees aka balanced, gravity is pulling downward equally, disturb that balance aka move the mac and the screen falls, call apple.
If it's balanced at 90degrees without problem, 91-140deg and 89-0deg will still have issues. Proper hinges should not let the screen move at all (or very little) when you move your mac...
I work with My MBP screen at a 110degree angle, if the hinges were loose on mine, the screen would continually fall to 140deg.

  • Is the Macbook pro lid replacement covered under the guarantee?

I have a smalld dent on the lid and it is just 5 months old. Is there any way i can get it replaced for free/reduced cost as part of my warranty

No. That's called 'user damage' and is not covered under the AppleCare warranty.
    Sorry,

  • Closed-lid mode on the MacBook Pro

    *My situation:*
My 17" MacBook Pro is connected to an external 24" display using DVI to DVI.
What I want to do: I want to be able to close the MacBook Pro lid to put the computer to sleep (along with the external display). I should be able to click a mouse button or keyboard key that is connected via USB to wake the computer up but only show video on the external display; the MacBook Pro's built-in display should not be activated. (This information can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286).
What I used to be able to do: exactly this, using my old 13.3" MacBook.
What the problem is: the computer and display successfully go to sleep, but upon pressing a button on the mouse the MacBook Pro is fully activated including its internal display, as well as the external display.
What I have tried: multiple USB keyboards/mice and the undocumented method of simply inserting or removing a USB device to wake the system. I have also tried with an Apple Remote and tried to invoke sleep within the Apple menu instead of closing the lid; every time the computer wakes completely.
    The power is connected.
    Any ideas guys?
    Edward

I'm still puzzled at why it the screen is activated when the lid is closed and woken with an external USB device
That's rather puzzling as the display should not work if the lid is closed. If you have an external drive you're able to install a clean copy of Mac OS X to and boot from you can see if the issue persist there. If it does then it's most likely a hardware issue and you should contact AppleCare. If it doesn't then it has something to do with either your software installation else some utility you've installed.

  • Little crack in my macbook... what to do

    Hi,
well since a little while i have this crack in my macbook, where my wrist rests on the computer to type. It's on the frontside, and now i broke, so i can see a little bit of dark (the inside of my macbook). this means there is a hole in it, so dust can get in, and i'm afraid it will get worse.
What should i do? Should i contact a retailer and ask him to let it be fixed? Is that covered by the warranty (i have only one year warrenty, but only bought the macbook in august 2007).
    Thank you very much,
    Jeroen Holvoet

    Hi Jeroen
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
This is a common problem and will be fixed under warranty. Take your MacBook to an authorised repairer and in a few days it will be as good as new.
It's not too late to extend the warranty to three years and I think this is something you should consider seriously. Personally I would not buy a laptop without buying the extended warranty.

  • Macbook to TV, Works fine until I put the Macbook to sleep then tv display

Macbook to TV, Works fine until I put the Macbook to sleep,
I wake the Macbook with external keyboard and the display shows up on TV just fine for a second or two then it looks like something changes and then it starts rolling.
It does not do this when Macbook is awake it only does it after it's put to sleep.

Probably the resolution is switching from a mirrored resolution to some other resolution that the TV can't work from. Try this; shut down the MacBook. Cable up the TV to the MB and also the external keyboard and mouse. Hold down the Shift key on the external keyboard, hit the start button on the MacBook and immediately close the lid on the MB after you've hit the start button. Continue holding the Shift key down on the external keyboard until you see the grey screen with the spinning gear at which time you can release the Shift key. The MB should now finish starting up in Safe mode with only the external screen being on. Hopefully the screen will not be rolling.
Once the MB finishes booting, go into System Preferences/Displays and set the resolution to the optimal/desired resolution for your TV. Hopefully this choice will stick through subsequent restarts and also correct the issue of the rolling screen under the conditions in the scenario you described.

  • Closed Lid Screen Sharing Methods?

    Hey Everyone,
    I have a late 2009 21 inch Imac, and a mid 2012 13 inch macbook pro (non-retina).
Since my imac does not support target display mode from my thunderbolt-using 2012 macbook, are there any other methods I could use to use my imac as a monitor for my macbook ???
I know all about mac's built in screen sharing capability, and I have used that extensively. My wish, however, is to be able to close the macbook pro lid, have it sitting in a dock beside my imac, and use the imac as my macbook pro's monitor.
I have ordered a firewire 800 and ethernet crossover cable, hoping to find a solution. I already have a standard ethernet cable.
I typically use screen sharing over my wireless network, and at times the performance isn't so great. I'm hoping that screen sharing will work better over a wired connection.
That being said, can I screen share via ethernet/firewire AND close the lid of the macbook?
Any solutions/work-arounds to the lack of target display mode in my 2009 21 inch imac are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I think you might have misread the original post
    With the lid closed:
Screen sharing DOES work but for TWO MINUTES then the "Reconnecting..." message appears and the system becomes uncontactable from the other machine completely - although it is still listed under the Shared section of finder.
The system wake to respond to the network event is deemed a Maintanence wake according to the console log.
According to the console log, after about 1m40s, the system decides that the Maint window is over and starts closing down applications and the connection ends.
It would be nice to force the system into a user state so that you could screen share or access shares until you log off and have the system revert to "power nap" mode, much like the wifi wake for access on Snow Leopard.  This was the behaviour I expected.  Since the system can only Power Nap while on AC power, it seems like this would make sense.

I recently migrated my MacBook from 10.5.8 to 10.6.8, using the Snow Leopard CD I purchased from Apple. Since then I have noticed a strange ozone smell coming from the MacBook in the area where the hinges are to open and close the unit. I was told by Apple that it probably is not serious and is coming from the fans in the MacBook. It is true that the smell/odor is more intense when the fans are working. Apple said I should take the MacBook to an Apple Store to have the hardware checked out. Everything seems to be working correctly. I am backing up automatically wirelessly to a Time Capsule, which I had not done until recently, although I had purchased the Time Capsule in 2009. I have not noticed this odor before. Does anyone suspect something more serious that may be going on?

You may be smelling it because with the new OS the processor is having to work harder causing it to get hotter then it would with the other OS.  I can't say there is nothing wrong, but what could be happening is just that, it's getting hotter so the fan is spinning faster and moving more air so you are getting more of the smell then you would before.  I would still continue to back it up, and take it to the Apple Store at a Genius Bar and have them look at it to make sure.  Was the computer ever in a smoky environment??

  • What is the cracking sound when I open my MacBook Pro lid?

When opening and closing MacBook Pro lid, it makes a cracking sound. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? It's not the hard drive because Geek Squad ran a test and everything passed.

Try this:  Loosen the screws in the rear of the MBP (by the hinge) and re-torque them.  See if that will alleviate the problem. You will need a 00 Philips driver.
    Ciao.

  • How to close MacBook Pro lid without the machine sleeping

I want to be able to close my lid and let applications keep running, such as a download but I don't see an option for it anywhere like in window$. Thanks.

InsomniaX does the job perfectly. Again watch out for fan overheat.
You can also keep the Macbook awake if you have the computer plugged into an external keyboard, mouse, and second display, in case you have any lying around.

    Jo

I had a MacBook which cracked several times over the three years I had it.  Each time it was repaired under warranty without quibble.
I had to use Windows XP quite a lot, and though I can't be certain I think that the excessive heat generated by XP was partly to blame for the repeated cracking.  There's no doubt that OS X is "cool" in every sense of the word!

  • Close the macbook pro when using external display

    Hi
I would like to know if is recomended to close the laptop when using an external display? i ask because i read somewhere that the system take ventilation through the keyboard? is better to work with the laptop always open? or doesn't matter if is closed?

    Third opinion...
I had a 2.16GHz 15" MacBook Pro that I used as a presentation machine at some trade shows in '07 and I once ran the machine with the lid closed, hooked up to an overhead projector looping a movie for 11 hours. When I finally shut it down for the night the machine was pretty warm (it was well ventilated) and was immediately usable. Out of curiosity the next day I ran it with a lid slightly cracked and the unit was significantly warmer at the completion of my day.
The only thing I could justify as the temperature difference is that the LCD was on and causing heat in addition to the video card. I guess I would have been curious to leave the lid slightly cracked and then manually set the backlight to off.

  • Is there any way to power up the MacBook without opening the lid?

Does anybody know if there are key combinations (external keyboard) or a way to enable the Apple Remote to power up a MacBook?
I have an external display, keyboard, and mouse connected and would like to be able to startup the MacBook without opening the lid...
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Macs have not been able to startup from a USB keyboard for nearly eight years. The very first iMacs had a USB keyboard with a power button, but since this is not a standard USB function, Apple removed this ability shortly after.
As the others have mentioned, if you have an external display, keyboard and mouse, then you can wake the MacBook from sleep. Is there a reason you're shutting down at all? I haven't restarted my MacBook twice since I've had it for the last three weeks. I just close it and it sleeps when I go to work or at night.
