Common question but, i have a 2012 macbook pro which is running very slow.

I dont have multipule apps/programs running at the same time so it cant be that, my hard drive still has 400gb spare on it, I'm constantly cleaning my memory with Memory keeper, which does help but surely thats not what i have to do all the time. I notice on other peoples macbooks that they have alot more apps in there dock or in launchpad yet they dont have have the speed issues i have. I've retsored the macbook back to factory settings alot as this seems to be the only to get it back up to speed but thats a real pain.
Any help will be appricated but PLEASE explain it in simple terms as im no expert and when people start saying to run commands, type into terminal etc. it just confuses me and therefore will be no help to me.
Thanks

No its not Mackeeper its called Memory cleaner, it gave a display showing how much memory was being used and then let you clean it. Could this have been the problem? I've just a factory restore (again!) but ive not put that back on.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook Pro 17" 2010 running very slow

    Hi,
My MBP has been running much slower over time.  The beachball that never used to show up is now a frequent companion.  Having to Force Quit apps happens often.  The fan sometimes runs for extended periods of time.  Much of my software is Microsoft products.  But I have Final Cut Pro and Photoshop, and they're behaving similarly.
I've tried starting up in Safe Mode, Repairing Disk, and resetting SMC.  It didn't help.  I just discovered EtreCheck, and here's the report:

Thanks is advance for any help or suggestions.

    Step 0
Back up your Mac. Select the Time Machine icon in your Mac's menu bar and select Back Up Now.
    Step 1
Uninstall ESET. It is capable of nothing beneficial and your Mac cannot operate properly with it installed.
ESET offers no obvious way to uninstall it. To do that you must use the "Eset Cyber Security Pro Setup Wizard" included with its installation package. If you no longer have it, you must download it again from their website - not from any other source, such as may be found from an Internet search.
    Use the Uninstall icon:
Disregard the blatantly fraudulent "Warning!" that appears:
Lie about the reason in the following step, which cannot be bypassed. ESET's developer is disingenuous and expects the same of its users:
ESET's uninstaller leaves components behind but it is sufficiently effective to render this piece of trash inert.
    Step 2
    Remove "MacKeeper":
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
    Step 3
Restart your Mac. Evaluate the results.

Sometimes, items may have been inadvertently downloaded by accident or due
to poor advisement, and of those some can be a cause of slowness in Mac OS X.
Also, the use of scanning antivirus software can be a cause of slow and disruptive
system issues; since antivirus for the most part is not effective due to the nature of
the Mac OS X and the inability of an AV application to have records of unknown, &
unsubstantiated or rumored issues in the wild, since few or none are known to exist.
The note in the etrecheck report of excessive Page Outs, implies directly that the
computer may need to have more RAM installed; a matching pair of higher capacity
correct spec RAM chips, could be purchased from a reputable source & installed.
As much as, perhaps 16GB in a RAM upgrade, depending on the MacBook build.
All of those red-lettered items in the report that did not load, appear to be system
parts; perhaps that may be something to investigate. Not sure why that is...
{Because today is part of a weekend, I'd suspect the time of day and weekday are
both behind the lack of an earlier reply to your post here. Also, if there have been
weather or other disruptions in the lives of those volunteers who offer help, then
maybe they've had to modify their plans around such events. Or power outages.
    We had one here for more than an hour, and everything went out. Even phones.}
So hopefully some other knowledgable readers may contribute ideas on how to
resolve the issues; troubleshooting may be helpful, and to read through sections
of TheSafeMac to see if there is any malware, adware, or other odd activity that
may point to a cause; removal suggestions for those are in that site. Also, if you
had visited any torrent or sharing sites, or downloaded free yet contaminated items
from software download sites, they could also affect your computer. There are
a few areas in that web site worth reading through.
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My MacBook Pro 2010 is running very slow...what to do?

My Macbook Pro purchased in 2010 is running extremely slow.  I would love to trash a bunch of stuff but whenever I try to do that, it freezes.
What to do?  Is there a simple thing to do to number one... get it to work faster and  two... how to stream down everything on it.
    MH

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Mavericks running very slow

Been having some trouble with my machine for a while now. Mostly seems related to internet programs. Google chrome, kernel task or this proccess will take up all of my processor power. Switching windows will sometimes hang, and when I try and restart my computer applications will need to be force quit to shut down. Applications that don't take up many proccesses, and operate fine normally.
Had something similar happen before my reformat. Had similar issues under mountain lion. Installed Mavericks, hoping it might help (and wanting a few of the new functions) but it didn't change it. Reformatted, and installed all apps from scratch rather than using time machine, since I thought it might be a software issue. I have done both permissions and disk repair. I've had disk repair find errors twice or three times in the last two months. Maybe slow hard disk failure?
    Any advice/assitance would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

I've stopped using Chrome, and I'm having much fewer problems. *****, cause I really like the browser, but it was one of the major culprits.

  • My MacBook Pro is suddenly running very slow

I am running Lion and updated to the Safari 5.2.1 last month.
About two weeks ago, when I woke up my MBP it started taking about two minutes to locate the WiFi signal (which used to be up and running in a few seconds.) Whatever I try to click on takes a long time to open or come up -- whether I am on Safari and going to other pages or just opening files from my desktop. I get the spinning disk. A lot.
So far I have booted in Safe Mode and repaired permissions and have also re-downloaded Lion. But the problem persists.
I've seen a lot of inquiries about slowness but nothing that specified the hunt for the WiFi signal. Any ideas?

    Because line-in has been removed.
It does allow for an Apple headset with mic., but I don't know if it would work with third-party ones.
You'll need to use a Griffin iMic or similar to use line-in via a USB port.
The same goes for the 15" retina, the newest MBA and the new iMac (whenever it finally arrives).

  • I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. How can I resolve this issue?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot
FireFox Web browser will not run
I get issues with the computer running very slowly
I have already turned off the transparency option in settings. Any ideas??

Do you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.
A SMC Reset or PRAM/NVRAM reset may also help.

I own a 13-inch MacBook Pro and for the past day, my wifi on my laptop says I only have two bars of connection and is running very slow, but all of my other devices such as my iPhone and iPad are connecting perfectly to the wifi. How can I fix this? I have tried to shut my laptop off and let it rest and I have also re-started my wifi router three different times. Someone please help me with this problem so I can begin to use my laptop again as I take it to school and use it for class.
    Thanks so much!

FCP, and all software on OSX, has a few different "preference" files (the extension is .plist), which store all your user settings. Each time you resize a window, change a setting, anything, this file is re-written. Kinda easy to see how they would become corrupt every now and then.
    -Close FCP
-Navigate to User>Library>Preferences and delete com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
-Navigate to User>Library>Preferences>Final Cut Pro User Data and delete Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
    -Empty your trash
Relaunch FCP and see if that worked.
Download FCP Rescue to make this process easier in the future. When you have FCP running really smooth, open FCP Rescue and create a backup of your preference files. If it starts acting wanky, just run FCP Rescue and Restore your backup preferences. Works really slick, and it's free.
EDIT: Or use the really simple explaination that X posted as I was typing.

In order to resolve the issue if it occurs again, more info would be helpful as to what occurred prior to the "hang." One potential fix would be to try a Safe Boot:
After the Mac is completely shut down, push the power button and immediately after the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
There should be a message that says "SafeBoot." After the Mac is completely booted, try restarting and see if the issue is gone.

I have a 15' Macbook Pro, mid 2010 running Mavericks. I want to upgrade the hardware by increasing the RAM to 8GB and replacing the HD for a SDD one. What would be the best way to install mavericks on the new HD? I have the original OS X CD.
From what I read, I have 2 choices: 1. to install OSX and then upgrade to Mavericks, but I'm not sure if this would be possible (to upgrade directly from OSX to Mavericks); and 2. to use a software called Super Duper.
I wouldn't like to have to use a third party software to do this, so the question is: is there a better way to install directly the Mavericks not having to use a third party software?

Install the new drive in the computer.
Install the old drive in an external USB or Firewire enclosure.
Boot the computer from the Recovery HD on the external drive.
Use Disk Utility to partition and format the new internal drive.
Clone your external drive to the internal drive.
How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
Step Three: Boot from the Recovery HD on the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the Recovery HD then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
      1. Open Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of
the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive
is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from
the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID  then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and
wait until the process has completed.
      4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the
drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main
          window.
      5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the
Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to
          return to the Erase window.
      6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several
hours depending upon the drive size.
Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
      1. Using Disk Utility still opened.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
      5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Destination entry field.
      6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
          Source entry field.
      7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

I have a 2007 Macbook Pro that is running 10.7.5 and I am trying to use a 10.6.3 DVD to install Snow Leopard to an external hard drive. I've followed every possible instruction on every which website. The problem is when I boot to Install disc, I am unable to choose which hard drive I'd like to install the OS on. It says that it is unable to Install and automatically takes me to Restore and suggests that I restore to Time Machine backups. Any and all help is appreciated.

    lovinlife5959,
have you tried booting from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? See if you can install its version of Mac OS X (either 10.4.9, 10.4.10, or 10.5.0, depending upon when it shipped from the factory) onto your external hard drive. If that works, boot from your external hard drive, run Software Update on it, and then try updating your external drive to 10.6.3 via the white Snow Leopard DVD.
