"Common" questions thread/board/whatever

I have been seeing so many repeat questions lately that really are very common. How to update control values programmatically and how to pass data between parallel loops to name the two I see most.
I have a suggestion that we create a common questions thread that is put together with links to common forum questions. This can be a sticky, or maybe force it to come up at the beginning of every search no matter the key words put in. I'm obviously open to other suggestions and I'm posting this because there would need to be other things resolved (can all members post to the thread or just NI staff so we avoid follow up questions? Which links to common question responses would be added to the thread? How do we determine the BEST answers? etc.) However, I think it would be a nice place to point users to, rather than to have to go dig up an old thread and point the users to it ourselves, when it's really what they should have looked for in the first place. We could just post a link to the "common questions thread"
This would save ben from posting his AE nugget link (which he probably has memorized) every day, or people repeatedly posting "try a producer-consumer queued state machine - see NI template that is included with LabVIEW"...and the list goes on.
Any comments on how to implement this, or why it's just a bad idea in general?

Tags are included in the serach. If someone asks about a "niad pulse converter" without mentioning it by name, the search engine could have trouble. The next time some asks, the tags will show in their search.
TAGS have the potential of codifying YOUR expertise in such a way  that a novice can stand on your foundation.

Ben, good plug for tagging - there's one problem though. You're by far the most diligent tagger, but most of your tags are hyphenated or underscored on the compound words. For instance, if I search for "Converting array to cluster", I'm guessing the search engine would not return the result that you have tagged "ConvertingArray-to-Cluster". Or am I wrong here - does the search engine throw out the hyphens and underscores?
A Quick search from my Forum_Tips tag yielded this  and I quote"

The search
engine is smart enough to ignore
underscores. So by constructing tags using an underscore between key
words let you create a connection between them.
All tags
(a text string delimited by spaces before and after) are counted and a
connection made when they are included for the same post.
So
by
constructing hierachial names and grouping them in a sinlge post you
create structure that if repeated, will create your own outline.

  • Script Language Translation - Very Common Question, but unable to resolve !

    Hi Gurus,
I know this is very common question, but I am stuck, unable to get this one resolved.
Need to translate sap script "TEXT SYMBOLS" from "English" to "French".
Have maintained language translation text symbol values in table TTDTG.
But when i login through French language, these are still getting printed in English !!
Any Pointers to resolve this will be of great help.
    Many Thanks,
    Madan

    hi
    1) Copy the Script into FR language and then change the Corresponding ENGLISH text to FRENCH text.
    2) Pass ur logon langauge   in the OPEN_FORM FM  Import parameters
                                                                                    LANGUAGE = sy-langu.
so that whatever is ur logon langauge it corresponding Form will be called.

  • This is a common question, and i apologize, but I have yet to see an answer.  I'm in the UK.  I have bought an Airport Extreme.  I need to buy a moden (not a combined router/modem, presumably.)  I cannot find one in stores or on the web.  Please help.

I need a modem to go with my new Airport Extreme.  I assume I cannot connect with my existing Router/Modem.  I can't find a product either in stores or on the net.  I know this is a common question, but I have yet to find a suitable answer.  Any advice for a fairly low tech guy?
    David

I'm glad you're able to use your current router. Sorry I can't help with your new issue, but I just wanted to add for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread - the X-Modem M3 still seems to be available from the manufacturers, this is the site I originally got it from and it's still for sale there:
    http://www.adslnation.com/phpapps/catalog/index.php?cPath=29
Thought I'd mention, as when I got my Airport I spent ages looking for a really small neat modem to use with it and this was the best I could find so other people might be interested too.

  • How can I create a new Question thread?

How to create a new "Question Thread" regarding the account payment ?

    Hello MotionBoy,
There are two ways to go about creating a new thread to run a step.  The first is to create a new sequence, into which you put the LabVIEW step you want to run and any other steps that may go along with it.  Then use a sequence call step to call this newly created sequence.  Set the Execution Options of the Sequence call step to 'Use New Thread.'  This will allow you to run a set of steps in a new thread, not just a VI.  The second method, which is only available for a LabVIEW VI, is to use the “Run VI Asynchronously” step.  This can be accessed if you right-click within your sequence and select Insert Step » LabVIEW Utility » Run VI Asynchronously.  This step will allow you to call a VI and have it automatically open in a new thread.  You can further customize this step by opening the configuration menu in the Step Settings.
To address the current behavior of your steps I would like to know if the modules in steps 1 & 2 pass data between them or it would be desirable for them to do so?  If so you are going to need a more complex synchronization structure such as TestStand/LabVIEW queues. There is a simple example you may want to look at in the TestStand examples, under the Synchronization folder that demonstrates how to use queues. Otherwise the above solution should be all you need.

Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.

  • Why my question thread is locked?

I found that my question thread is locked, why?
    Hi Guys,
Here are two questions about ABAP.
    (1)
UML provides various diagram types. Mark the valid UML diagrams
(More than one answer is correct)
    1 Aggregation
    2 Composition
    3 Class
    4 Component
    5 Behavior
I think the correct answers are (1) (2) (3). But the standard answers are (3)(4)(5).
    Why?
    (2)
    Mark the valid logical nodes.
(More than one answer is correct)
    1 Node
    2 Table
    3 Structure
    4 Complex Data Object
    5 File
The standard answers are (2) (3) (4). Can anybody explain it in details?
    Thanks.
Edited by: Michael on Jan 29, 2008 3:36 PM

    Hi Micheal,
The answer for the first question is:
    1)
Firstly Aggregation & Composition are types of relationships and they are part of an UML Diagram used to connect the various classes/parts of that specific diagram.
They are not the actual diagrams
    The remainig three options
    Class,
    Component &
Behavioural are the UML Diagrams, which contain the various classes, components, packages etc.
Hence the options 3,4,5 are correct.
The UML Diagrams are categorized as
    Structural and Behavioural Diagrams.
    Under Structural Diagrams
    Class Diagram
    Object Diagram
    Component Diagram
    Deployment Diagram
    Under Behavioral Diagrams
    Use Case Diagram
    Sequence Diagram
    Collaboration Diagram
    Statechart Diagram
    Activity Diagram
If you are still not clear then please go through the below link which clearly shows  the various relations existing and about the UML Diagrams.

  • What are the most common questions in the forums?

I have my own ideas about what are the questions we see asked over and over and over again in here. Everyone post your ideas here so we can compile a FAQ and maybe post it somewhere (Virum, your new site? :) )

Please do my homework/coursework/think for me
This has to be by far the most common type of question asked on the forums.
    Classpath questions
    HashCode questions
Pointer vs Reference Debate (totally spurious but people spew 100's of pages arguing about something that is perfectly obvious)
A very good Thread that is probably 1000's of entries long by now is the
"How to get your questions answered promptly" one (or however this is called). A recap of that published somewhere would be of tremendous value, especially if it was presented as a page you had to go through before landing in the forums to post your latest "Java Challenge" aka "do my coursework" on the boards.

  • New User Guide (common questions)

    Common Ipod Info
For those who just go an ipod here is some basic info on the ipod and how to do a few things.
    Basic Info
    Disconnecting/Connecting
Just plug in via USB and wait (can take a few minutes). Ipod will load up and the screen will show DO NOT DISCONNECT go to itunes and update it or add file do whatever to it.
TO DISCCONECT do not unplug if the screen says do not disconnect. Instead you have two options.
1.) In itunes right next to where it says NAME’s IPOD (in the source window) there is a small eject button. Or you can highlight you ipod and in the bottom right there is a bigger eject ipod button.
2.) Open my computer and you should see your ipod as a removable drive. Right click it and click eject.
Ipod’s do not actually hold 30gigs or 60gigs. In stead the 30gig holds ~28gigs. This is the same as hard drives something about 1024 bytes. Look it up via google if you really care. This is normal.
    Multiple IPod
If you are sharing one computer with 2 or more iPod but do not want all the music and want only yours here is what you should do.
    1.) Open I tunes
2.) Create a new play list (file->new play list) and name it something like Moo’s play list (so you know it is yours)
3.) Add the music you want to it (go to library and drag it to you play list.)
4.) Now plug in the ipod and go to edit>preferences>ipod
5.) Select update only selected play lists and check your play list.
6.) Wait for it to update and unplug and redo with second ipod
    Getting Video’s to Ipod
    WINDOWS ONLY
Two options that I use. For both the first step if getting form DVD is to save the DVD to your computer (caution DVD’s are huge! Have 10gigs for one movie to be safe.) You must have a DVD drive to do DVD’s. CD-ROMs will not work. If you don’t have a DVD drive you can get one for like 20 bucks.
First off the Videora method. Read this guide.
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html
macleankara’s guide (a little bit more info and pretty simple too) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=282835&tstart=15
Second is the Nero Recode method and you should read this guide
    http://arstechnica.com/guides/tweaks/ipod-video.ars/5
I prefer Nero why because I paid for it and it’s a bonus feature I’m using by golly!
It won’t show up on my ipod! (Music and video)
Make sure it is in the correct format.
Video’s h.264 and mpeg-4 at 320x240 Also make sure the bit rate is at the appropriate level (another reason for videora its simple and auto in right bit rate) Make sure the screen is set to 320x240 or it wont play. Mpeg-4 can show up to 480x480 but the ipod’s screen is maxed at 320x240 so it will be shrunk down with black border on all sides.
Music just makes them into mp3’s
As for the battery read this from apple
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61434
hope this helps some people. and hopefully will reduce redundant questions

I don't know what you mean by "appendages".
You can create a contact which phone number will contain a pause, then continues other numbers, and then wait for a click from you, and then continue again.

  • Questions on board change

I have questions on the motherboard change I'm about to do and obviously I'm amateur with this stuff so please bare  with me.  my question is I'm installing the MSI K7N2-l with AMD Athlon X.P. 2000+ Palomino core.
I was wondering when I switch motherboards can I put in my current hard drive with windows XP and just reinstall the current drivers for this new motherboard, or is there something else I need to do? I understand that before I remove the old motherboard I will need to uninstall any drivers or bios pertaining to that board before proceeding, is this correct?  Thank you for your patience any information would be greatly appreciated!
    Bill

It really depends on how much trouble just backing up critical data and doing a clean install is for you....I do recommend a clean install...but as you stated uninstalling any ide device, pci controllers and such will probably get you into a windows enviornment with the new board, but it is hard finding all previous registry entries....I would try a repair/ not a reinstall of the os from the XP cd itself.

    Greetings,
I am otherwise known as Robert Simmons jr. O'Reilly has recently published my first book entitled hardcore java. Since the motivation for some of the content came from questions asked on this forum, I decided to make a question an answer thread on this forum to deal with your questions on the book, its content and topics.

I read the sample chapter about using final and,
whilst I agree with you about using final beinggood
coding practise, there are a few points I wouldmake:
Example 2-2. Simple constants using final:
    public static class CircleToolsBetter {
    /** A value for PI. **/
public final static double PI = 3.141;I think you should limit the scope of that variableby
making it private. Why? What would be your motivation in hiding this
value? At any rate, the example you are mentioning
wasnt designed to demonstrate guarding access to
constants. I talk about that a bit later in the
chapter. There may be reasons for havign this private,
I concede that. Just in this example I cant think of
one. At any rate derived classes will probably need PI
so protected would be a better option if you want to
seal it off for some reason. I just think that you should always try to limit the scope of a variable as much as possible. I know that wasn't the point of that particular example, but I think it's good practise "in general".
At any rate derived classes will probably need PI so
protected would be a better option if you want to seal
it off for some reason.Ah, but what about classes (it's public in the example), they could reference that variable and then if it changes ...
In the section "Public Primitives and
Substitution" you don't mention anywhere thatyou
can get around the problem of having to recompile
dependant classes by using static initializion and
also by interning Strings. I think that would makea
good addition to that section.Good feedback, Ill think about that for revision 2.
There is some other material that didnt make that
chapter as well. =) However, I do talk abotu
initialization in detail in chapter one. You should
check it out. =) Do I have to buy the book : )
You say[i] "Most singleton classes shouldn't be
declared as final. You never know what otherfeatures
your class's user will dream up. However, since
singleton classes need to be protected fromexternal
instantiation, you can't make the constructorpublic.
The solution to the problem is a protected
constructor". I think you should add that thismeans you must put your singleton in a relevant
package (i.e. Not in a package with classes that
shouldn't be able to instantiate the singleton!)Of course you should always employ good package
management. In fact package management might be in
second edition as I do have quite a few notes on it.
However, a singleton can only instantiate itself and
that only once, so I dotn see why you think this is a
concern. The goal of protected constructors is to
prevent external instantiation of the class. Perhaps
you were thinking of constructors with "package
private" access (ie no public, private or protected
keyword used) ?? Protected constructors can only be
accessed bby the class and subclasses, whereas a
"package private" constructor can be accessed by any
    class in the package.
A protected constructor is accessible to the class itself, its subclasses, and classes in the same package.

  • WSIM common question

    Hello community,
    My question is very common.
I have made an answer file with WSIM and when I test this xml i boot from network, load the image. After the image is loaded, the unattended.xml file is working fine.
But I am testing a lot. And so to my question:
Is it possible to test the unattend.xml file without loading the windows image every time i have made changes in the unattend.xml ?
Because the image is every time loading, i have to wait 30 minutes to see the impact of my changes in the unattend.xml
So is there a faster solution for this problem?
    Thank you

    Oliver,
You can double-check the code to verify if its really correct.
Actually you can load the image on a Virtual Machine that make the procedure faster.
100% guarantee, you know, just loading (:

  • Kingston HX PC3500 overclocking question (875P board)

I'm asking because I intend to get this memory. But before that I want some info. Does anyone have this type of memory and if so, what about overclocking? How far can you go and what are the timings at the highest FSB you can get? Thanks in advance.

well overclocking is an skill.you kinda gotta get the feel for it and its very important to Fully understand how changing your settings in your BIOS is gonna affect the rest of your system.with this in mind first off there are certain things that must be taken into consideration before you even start.
your gonna need a bigger better CPU cooler.i recommend anything thermal-right as most serious o/c will tell you they are very good with no frills.
second how good is your ram? if its just generic you may have a hard time getting very far.and just because it says PC 3200 or whatever doesn't mean much when you start pushing the limits and changing timings on things.
third thing is make sure you have a big power supply!very important.i recommend 400w for starters if your gonna overclock.
when you start you wanna go up a little bit at a time and for air cooling i would never recommend raising your v-core over .1 your biggest enemy is heat and what mostly causes heat is raising your CPU voltages.also ask lots of questions good luck!
also to unlock your cpu go to google and look up "amd wire trick"

  • Continuation on my question "The board PC-LPM-16 , PCI-6032E , PCI-6033 are with conversion sample-hold ?

In my question I wanted to ask if such cards have a negligible ( not a null ) delay between a channel and another ( for istance 1/max rate of board also at slowly acquisitions ) .
Is it possible to know the delay of my cards and of the National Instr. cards in general ?

I will try to explain the interchannel delay of the 6032E, based on the parameters provided in the catalog 2002.
The maximum sampling speed of the board is for all of the channels. That means, if one channel is read, it can be sampled up to 100KS/s. If three channels are read, each one will be sampled at a maxium of 33.33 KS/s.
The delay among the samples for consecutive channels is constant, and it is the maximum speed of the board. For this case (pci-6032e), it is 10 us (microseconds) (1/100KS/s).
On the other hand, if you sample one single channel at 50KS/s, the delay among the samples will be 20 us.
If two channels are sampled at 20,000 samples per second, the first sample would take place in time 0s, the second would take place in 10 us, the third
(that is the second of the first channel would be in time 50 ns, the forth (second of second channel) in time 60 ns. Thus, the delay among samples of consecutive channels is always 10 ns, but the delay among consecutive samples of the same channel is defined by the specified sampling frequency. The delay between the sample of the last channel and the first channel is defined then by the sampling frequency and by the number of channels.
    Hope this information is helpful.
