Communication to disc drive error...help!...is my superdrive fried?

I keep getting error 0x 80020022 "communication to disc drive failed"
no matter what i try burning. Firmware is up to date, and I'm using hi-quality discs. It's holding up my livelyhood...HELP!
thnx in advanced
desperate,
John

John,
Forgot to mention that I have found a partial, but ackward way around this problem. I downloaded "Backup" from .Mac and used this to back up my files on to a CD. Oddly, this worked okay. No communication failure codes. Only problem is that with "Backup" all files are put into the same Home Files folder, so you cannot pull individual files out of the pile. At least you can back up and restore if you have troubles. So I am now using "back up" application to save data. Very strange that their is no error codes with "back up", yet I cannot burn files the regular way to a CD. Fishy.

  • IMac optical disc drive error

Hey there... first things first Im new in this discussions forum. Ok, here's my problem...
Something wrong with my optical disc in my iMac. I inserted a disc into the drive but few seconds later it ejects back the disc. I thought the disc is damaged so I inserted another disc but same thing happened, it gets ejected back.
Then, I turned off the computer to let it cooldown first. When I turned again and try to insert a disc things gone worse. The disc can only be inserted half of it. So anyone please help me or I just send to Apple repair centre as a last resort.

Omg... i felt very sorry that Im posting at a wrong forum topic... please pardon me.

Burning disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (error code 0x80020022)  Any suggestions??

Sadly, that error has umpteen causes, sometimes the drive is going out, sometimes it's bad media, sometimes a slower burn works, & rarely a Cleaning Disc helps.
Bad File names can even cause it...

  • G4 communication error to disc drive

I am not able to burn PDF's onto a CD.  "Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed.  (Error code 0x80020022)". What does this mean?
    Thanks.  Brent

The error code appears over a period of time and in some instances may relate
to the system, and some users were able to update their OS X with the last Combo
Update to their build version; so if you are using Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.7, to get &
install Combo update 10.4.11 would help. On occasion, even if the system is at the
last update version, a reinstall of the combo 10.4.11 can clean it up.
    •Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)
And if your system is Tiger, you could archive your current system to an external drive
and then erase the computer completely, then build up a new full Tiger using the last
main update parts that include former bits into streamlined files; these take up less
drive space and work very well. I did this with two of mine that had started on with lower
numbered update levels after the final combo files were released some years ago.
The error message may also indicate a problem elsewhere in software, perhaps due
to some kind of conflict between different files from several makers... While I just did
a search via google using - Mac OS X Error code 0x80020022 - more than a few fair
results appeared; several are links back to Apple discussions. Not sure which links
still work, because these ASC discussions had been re-worked and links can fail.
However that would be a place to compare issues and replies, where available.

At times, error codes and odd issues can be alleviated by using different quality
media, using a clean optical drive, slower recording speeds, and checking over
the computer to be sure the system and peripheral items aren't messing up.
Are you using a third-party disc burning utility, or another native system software?
You may be able to use Burn utility, a free ware, to attempt a different path to using
the built-in or external optical drive. There are settings for data & other content, too.
Be sure to get the correct version for PPC with 32-bit for older Mac...

Not sure, either, if a reset of PRAM/NVRAM could help in this instance; and then if a
(PMU) Power Management Unit reset may affect communication between the optical
drive component and the logic board circuitry, that may be worth a try.
I have not had this kind of issue in quite some time; the suggestions located in the
search result links do mention issues and a few possible resolutions to try. There
just is not much traffic in these PowerPC discussions, that actually relate to PPCs.
Hopefully you can get past the error code & burn PDF to media disc again.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have burned CDs before from 2gb to 7gb using different types of discs. Now I get this error message Apple error The disc can't be burned because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022). What should I do

Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then zap the PRAM/NVRAM as per > About NVRAM and PRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
    Then retry the Disc Drive.

  • I keep getting "error occurred while attempting to import file *******. The disc your are attempting to use is full." I have an external hard drive that I moved files over to, but apparently they're also still on my hard drive? HELP!

I keep getting "error occurred while attempting to import file *******. The disc your are attempting to use is full." I have an external hard drive that I moved files over to, but apparently they're also still on my hard drive? HELP!

So you have backed up the content of the computer's hard drive, too?
That usually is a great idea since it is possible to lose use of the system
if parts of it have accidentally been removed or get over-written, or the
main system files get corrupted, when the hard disk drive gets too full.
If you have not trashed the originals of your created content, that remain
after you made copies on an external hard drive or other device, then
that is what you'd have to do to reclaim the capacity still in use by them.
What are specifications of the hard disk drive? The unused capacity
verses the used, in GB? If the hard drive has less than 15 to 20%
free or unused capacity, you could run into trouble. Mine are 40-50%
unused hard drive space, so ample room is available for automatic
Virtual Memory to use that capacity as temporary swap file space.
This is helpful when the computer could use more physical RAM
memory capacity, but doesn't have it. Or if the RAM is maxxed out
and you can't add any more. Virtual Memory is part of OS X and the
system automatically can use as much as is available, but it is better
to be sure there is plenty of resources available to include chip RAM
as well as unused or free hard drive capacity for use as VM.
If for some reason your files in Trash won't go away when you empty
it, you may have to restart. Be sure you have not included any System
files in the content in the Trash, or the Mac may not start up later on.
You may have to boot the computer from the install-restore OS X DVD
and run Repair Disk from its version of Disk Utility, to be sure it's OK.
I'm guessing that by now you know enough about the vintage system
in the older hardware to figure it out, so I won't write about it now.
In any event... hopefully you can simply trash the files, but check them
carefully, & you may need to remove (copy to archive first) even more.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • A communication error with disc drive

A communication error with disc drive and burn folder on macbook will not let me burn discs.  Is this a program error kind of thing or just parts problems?
    White Macbook using OS 10.6.8

There is a chance that the optical drive &/or its cable have failed
so a replacement, perhaps in the form of a third-party quality drive
may be in order. The Apple USB Superdrive does not directly work
with older computers that have internal optical drives; but there are
good ones by other makers, owners of older MacBook portables use.
    {There may also be a Console error message failure-related code.}
Or see about the ifixit guide to repair that model MacBook & a
replacement part from OWC, to survey efforts & costs to DIY.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed

I get this error when trying to burn more than 1Gb of stuff to a DVD+R disc. or a DVD-R:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed.
    Error Code 0x80020022
Any idea if my drive ***** or something?

Hi everyone, just thought I'd update the thread.
Last night i did a clean install of Leopard over the top of Tiger, and now the DVD drive works without the error. I was able to burn a full disk with no problem.
I thought, incase google bring someone here, I'd post my sequence of events incase it helps someone.
New MBP C2D migrated user from MBP CD
Could not burn disks on media of any format over about 1.5Gb
Put up with the problem as I couldn't afford to lose my MBP for 2 days while it was replaced by Apple.
Upgraded to leopard with formatting drive and clean install. I did not migrate the user, I just reinstalled the apps I wanted, synced my dotmac goodies, and copied over all my data folder by folder.
Result is a fully functioning DVD burner that burns without communication failure.

  • Communication between the computer and the disc drive failed

The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022). This computer has been out of the box for less than a month and this has been a growing problem.

My problem was FIXED at the apple store..... there was something wrong in the system preferences and the genius deleted something that recreated it's self. Surely enough we we're able to burn a 600 mb dmg of nothing onto a few test disks. For anyone having this issue...it's NOT The media, it's some configuration issue within the computer's preferences. I'm telling you all to take your machine to the nearest apple store and have them fix it, if your machine is still under warranty the fix is free. There was no hardware issue, so the optical drive was not replaced.

  • New Hard Disc Drive for HP Pavilion dv6 because of 303 and 305 error messages

    Hello
My laptop was getting slower and slower so I did a default restore via the recovery partition and when it rebooted to start the reformat and reinstall to factory condition I got a message on the screen telling me to run the hard disc drive test. Did this and got the 303 and 305 error messages. The restore to default setting worked however after doing research in the error codes I realise I'm up for a new hard disc drive.
My laptop is  a HP Pavilion dvd6-3203TU with WIndows 7 Home Premium installed. It currently has a 320GB TOSHIBA MK3265GSXX hard disc drive in it.
After reading through the forums I'm happy to find that my Recovery Discs will reinstall everything to a new hard drive and partition it into a C: drive and also the recovery partition. The main question I have is does my new hard drive have to be 320GB in size like the original or can I buy something like a 500GB+ drive for the laptop. If I have to replace the hard drive I may as will increase the size while at it, if possible that is.
Also does it have to be a Toshiba or can I buy a different brand?
Looking forward to some help in regards to this so thank you in advance also
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Your notebook is listed as coming with a 320Gb Hard Drive, but you can just as easily install a 500Gb or 750Gb HDD if you want more space - the drives on the following links are examples that would be fine for your notebook - you're in no way restricted to a particular manufacturer.
    500Gb Hard Drive
    750Gb Hard Drive.
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 65 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.

Unable to burn CDs using i tunes. Have run diognostics.    Summary:-   i tunes not running in safe mode.

    Please help.

That's why you want to make a backup of the registry. If you didn't make a backup, use MS system restore to go back. The only values you should remove are UpperFilter or LowerFilter - one or both may be in there and can be removed. If neither value exists, then that is probably why you can't burn and Windows is not recognizing your drive as a writable drive.

  • Disc verification error - drive replaced still have issue

I constantly get an error message that says: This disk could not be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new, blank disc. (Error code 0x80020063)
I took it to Apple and they replaced it with the same Matsushita UJ-868 drive on my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). I kept getting the same error, so I reformatted, and the error went away temporarily. I then got it again after a few burns. I reformatted again, and this time the error was still there.
Any ideas? I plan to take it back, but I don't know what Apple will do. Is this a software issue I can resolve at home? Please help.

I am having exactly the same problem. I'm not sure what to suggest, but would be up for any answers like you

  • Drive error with DVD-DL discs

I just bought a case of TDK DVD-DL's and so far on two discs it has burned so far but stopped with this error:
    The drive reported an error
    Sense Key = Medium Key
    Sense Code = 0x0C
    Write Error
Is this a faulty drive or faulty media, I tried using the built in burner and Toast.

    Hi-
Media errors are commonly due to incompatible or poorly made media.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
As far as the drive goes, if other media burns properly, I would try a different brand of DL discs.
Taiyo Yuden is recognized as one of the top, quality disc makers.
    Verbatim is also a winner.
Slowing the burn, burning after a restart of the machine, and using a hard drive with ample free space are also ways to improve burn performance/reliability.
It is also possible that a firmware update for the optical drive could help the problem.
Firmware updates typically address media compatibility.
