Communication to the disk drive failed

i've experienced this problem after burning 3 dvds, it appeared on the fourth but the data was still burned on the cd. Now i am trying to burn some of my files on the cd and it appeared again, this time it didn't burn the file at all.what could be the problem?

I get this error randomly and only since I installed Leopard. I never had any issues like this before.
My drive is also: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857
I tried various media. Cheap stuff and brand media as well. I even tried Apple's own DVDs and still get the same error. What is interesting is that if I leave about 1GB of the drive empty, the burning completes.
I noticed that the errors usually happen toward the end of the burning, so that is why I decided to leave some space unused. Of course this way I can fit only about 3GBs of data on the disc, but at least I don't have to waste them completely. I had about 10 bad discs yesterday, so you can probably understand that it was getting a bit frustrating.
Did anyone find a good solution to this issue? Restarting does not work in my case.

What the **** does this mean? I got this twice trying to burn a DVD. It got about 10% into both and then got this. This is on a C2D macbook with all updates. Thanks!

BTW, CD's burn just fine. I'm using memorex 16X DVD-R disks. I'm just curious as to if this is a hardware or software (Leopard) issue or not. Thanks.

  • Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed

I get this error when trying to burn more than 1Gb of stuff to a DVD+R disc. or a DVD-R:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed.
    Error Code 0x80020022
Any idea if my drive ***** or something?

Hi everyone, just thought I'd update the thread.
Last night i did a clean install of Leopard over the top of Tiger, and now the DVD drive works without the error. I was able to burn a full disk with no problem.
I thought, incase google bring someone here, I'd post my sequence of events incase it helps someone.
New MBP C2D migrated user from MBP CD
Could not burn disks on media of any format over about 1.5Gb
Put up with the problem as I couldn't afford to lose my MBP for 2 days while it was replaced by Apple.
Upgraded to leopard with formatting drive and clean install. I did not migrate the user, I just reinstalled the apps I wanted, synced my dotmac goodies, and copied over all my data folder by folder.
Result is a fully functioning DVD burner that burns without communication failure.

Burning disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed. (error code 0x80020022)  Any suggestions??

Sadly, that error has umpteen causes, sometimes the drive is going out, sometimes it's bad media, sometimes a slower burn works, & rarely a Cleaning Disc helps.
Bad File names can even cause it...

  • Communication between the computer and the disc drive failed

The disc can’t be burned because because communication between the computer and the disc drive failed (error code 0x80020022). This computer has been out of the box for less than a month and this has been a growing problem.

My problem was FIXED at the apple store..... there was something wrong in the system preferences and the genius deleted something that recreated it's self. Surely enough we we're able to burn a 600 mb dmg of nothing onto a few test disks. For anyone having this issue...it's NOT The media, it's some configuration issue within the computer's preferences. I'm telling you all to take your machine to the nearest apple store and have them fix it, if your machine is still under warranty the fix is free. There was no hardware issue, so the optical drive was not replaced.

"attempting to copy to the disk C:\ failed. the file name was invalid or too long." This was the message that I keep getting after trying to "add folder to library" of multiple tracks from an external hard drive. it only happens after a certain period of time.. i get about half of my tracks added before this message pops up. when i first got my i pod it worked fine. but after i hooked up my i pod several times without having that external drive on... the i pod took over that drive letter that my external drive used to use. so.. when i turned on my external drive, it was given a new letter.. then i tunes would not recognize those 1500 tracks that came from my external drive (explanation points listed next to tracks). so.. I deleted all of those files manually, then tried to add folder to library again from the new letter coordinating to my external hd. I kept getting that message above. after that i deleted all files associated with i tunes.. and uninstalled i tunes.. then did a reinstall.. did i tunes update from site... and tried to just add the set of tracks from that external hd... still same **** error. only now.. after i say ok to error... i tunes continues for like 2 seconds.. then has to shut down... ****!!! can anyone help me with this... anyone?

just to update my problem... I finally figured out that i had to disable the "copy to my itunes folder from my library option. just so you know. apparently i tunes cant handle the large transfer to itunes and also at the same time copy it to your itunes folder... APPLE fix this!!!!!! this suxxxxx....

  • My hard disk drive failed.  How do I deactivate that copy?

My hard disk drive failed.  The genius at The Apple Store checked it out and said it was dead.  Apple sold me another drive with just the operating system on it.  Now when I installed Photoshop CS6, I am told that this is my second copy.  How do I deactivate the copy on the failed disk drive.  I was able to copy most of my data files from the drive.  I do not know if the copy of Photoshop on that drive still works or not.  What should I do?

You can't install Windows to a bad drive. If the diagnostic is saying the disk has failed then you have to believe it. The hard drive needs to be replaced. Here is a link to the Service Manual:

  • "ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." On HP Envy 20

Hello -  I have an ENVY 20 All-in-One PC and up until yesterday it was running fine. When I turned on my PC, a black screen appeared with the message: "ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed." I followed the directions on this post and ran a Hard Disk Test in BIOS. I've run both the Quick Check and the Extensive Check and both were passed. I'm not sure what to do now. Any solutions?  Thanks, mgmartinelli

Mgmartinelli, welcome to the forum. It appears that you may be getting some conflicting information.  The error message that you first received is normally attributed to a failed/ing hard drive.  You may want to disconnect the drive and reconnect it to see if that helps. Please click the "Thumbs up + button" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

  • My Macintosh HD partition is damaged and the disk utility failed to repair it

I cannot boot anymore after I tried to repair the disk with Disk Utility after my Mac became very slow.
This is the second time it happened to me in a week with the same symptoms. When I try to boot, I see a gray screen and the computer just stops
When I use the recovery partition, the disk utility fails to repair the disk, stopping after failing to fix the catalog file.
I started to use TM to backup my data after erasing the disk and reinstalling Mountain Lion but I wonder if my hard drive is damaged because the same problem happened twice. (Thanks TM for keeping my data safe this time)
Any advice or ways to fix that once and for all ?
PS : The worst is that i can still boot with Bootcamp to Windows, not very useful though

Since your Recovery HD and Windows partition work fine, the problem is located in your Macintosh HD partition and I very highly suspect it's bad/failing sectors that's to blame for your troubles.
This can sometimes occur if the computer was moved while the hard drive was in operation, else sectors fail all by themselves, or if the drive is having mechanical issues, which you problem will continue no matter what you do.
This time when you use Recovery > Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD partition, use the middle secure erase option, not the far left or right options (the right will work also just take a really long time)
What your doing is with the middle secure erase option is called a "Zero" write, which Disk Utility will write 0's over all the bits in that partition. When it's done it will read it back for confirmation and when it does so, any bits that are failing will be mapped off by the drive. Hopefully this will resolve the issue without needing a drive replacement.
Once that is completed, reinstall OS X from Recovery, any programs from original sources, files only from backup and your problems hopefully should disappear.
What happens is if your data gets corrupted on the boot drive by failing sectors, it gets transfered to TimeMachine (or to bootable clones) and when you restore your right back to square one. So it's important to rule out that possibility with original installs of OS X and third party programs.
If your problems continue, then it's possibly a problem  with third party at boot kernel extension files, (and the catalog problem was yet another one) so to solve this you need to make sure all your third party software is updated and works with your current OS X version.
A trick is, if you get gray screen at boot time, is to hold the Shift Key while booting the computer, this will disable a lot of things and allow you to fix the third party software issue.
What I suggest you do is have multiple backup systems, including hold option key bootable clones, this way if your TM drive gets corrupted you can go back in time to a saved state on the clone, restore that and then your files from the TM drive.

Which Windows Operating System am I running?
Here are links to recovery may fail and troubleshooting recovery problems. You might need to disable any virus protection software to do this. Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.
    Please let me know.
