    RAM = Random Access Memory
the 4GB you quoted is your system memory, people say get as much as you can as it attributes to the performance of your system with major impact.
    other people disagree..

nope - no difference than running with 4GB......Apps however, open much faster with 16GB....
you'll also have 0 page outs and 0 swap used...

  • What is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

what is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Memory upgrade on mid 2010 MacBook pro 13.3"

I decided it was time to upgrade the original 4GB memory in my mid 2010 2.4 ghz core 2 duo 13.3 inch MacBook pro and bought a 2X4GB pack from PNY. Unfortunately the memory is not reconized and my laptop doesn't start when using both 4 GB sticks. However when I use only either one of the new 4GB and one of the old 2GB sticks it does start up and reconizes 6 GB of memory. So both new sticks are reconized separately just not together. I tried reinstalling the two 4GB sticks together multiple times to ensure they were installed properly. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

The problem is your memory.  It's not the correct kind.  You need to purchase another brand that is known to work in Macs, of which PNY is not.  Dual ranked dual channel memory of good quality is what's suggested.  Crucial or Corsair is your best bet.  Cheap memory you find at retail stores won't work 100% of the time.  Another user who bought cheap Kingston memory like you had exactly the same problem.  Each module would work fine paird with an older one for max 6GB, but both new 4GB modules wouldn't work together.

  • Memory upgrade on late 2011 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Mountain Lion 10.8.2

I just opened my Laptop and saw that they have   hynix memory installed 2X2 GB I am trying to buy hynix 8X2 to make it 16GB as i was told that MacBook Pro can acomedate 16GB of memory and will be faster.
I am writing deferent suppliers and so far no luck,One told me that they can get it but they are out of it , so i am waiting.
Here is the right memory for it:
    8GB DDR3 PC3- 10600 1333MHz 204 PIN.
    204 -PIN SODIMM
    DDR3-PC3-10600.CL9
    UNBUFFERED.NON-ECC
    DDR3-1333.1.35V . 1024MEGX64
Any one correct me if i am wrong I did a lots of research to get this info.
    Hope it helps othrs.

You do not need to use Hynix; Apple use several brands and as long it's good quality RAM you'll be fine.
Try OWC for starters - they proved the 16GB installation for those models.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=440&type=Memory
Their support is excellent and the memory is warranted for life.

  • I received a memory warning on my 2010 MacBook pro. When I open up the about my mac box I see a lot of memory being conumed with "other".  However, when i go into finder and look whjat I have stored, i have difficulty in seeing what is eating up my comput

I have a 2010 MacBook pro with 500 Gig of memory.  Recently, i received a warning about running out of memory space.  When I open up my about my mac icon, I see that "other" is chewing up most of the memory.
    1. When I open finder, I can't seem to see where/why my computer's memory is almost exhausted.
    2. What is the best way to focus on where my memory is being consumed.
    3. What is the safest way of deleting programs/files that are not needed.
    4. In my mail account I see hundreds of messages for email, but they have an OLK designator, if I delete these, does that erase the same message from Microsofy outlook for Mac or is it a redundant file.  These messages do not consume much memory though.
    5. I know there will be a new operating system available this summer, and I am trying to make sure that if I pursue it, I will have sufficient memory available.
    many thanks,

there is an app called daisydisk on mac app store which will help you see exactly where the memory is focused and consumed try using that app and see which folders are using more memory

  • I want to find out how much memory is left on my macbook pro. I need to know steps to find this out.

I had a problem today as my computer would not save a file for me.  A box stated macintosh HD was full and I would need to clear some files to make room.  I realized that although I had deleted emails from mac mail, gmail had not deleted these and all still remained on my macbook pro.  I went to gmail and finally deleted all the emails, and there were thousands.  I have been able to save a file as of now but want to know how much memory exists on my macbook pro.  It is confusing when I go to the Apple icon in the upper left corner of my laptop as that states my computer has 4gb of memory, two in each slot.  It does not tell me how much as been used.  Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated.  M.

The bottom of a Finder window will show you how much HD space you have left.

  • What kind of memory for my early 2008 macbook pro

    or
    Corsair Value select
    VS4GSDSKIT667D2 PC2-5300 4GB Kit 5-5-5-15 200pin SODIMM
(this is probably absolutely the same as above, but in a kit)
    or
    APACER Notebook Memory - DDRAM2 SODIMM PC5300@667MHz, 2GB
    http://usa.apacer.com/us/products/NotebookMemory_DDR2-667_SO-DIMMfeatures.htm
Btw, sorry if it is a stupid question, but what is the difference between Corsair memory above and Corsair memory for MAC? http://www.corsair.com/products/mac/default.aspx#notebook
    Thanks!!

Not sure about the difference, but I upgraded my 17" MacBook Pro using the Corsair 4GB kit (2 x 2GB). No problems since.
    These are 667MHz (PC2-5300-CL4) Low Latency 4-4-4-12 SODIMMs (200-pin)
I imagine the 5-5-5-15 latency sodimm you mention are the latest version

    Gracias

Try cleaning it very thoroughly.  Sometimes this will solve the problem.
The Macbook Pro battery resides under the trackpad.  Some times the battery will expand and interfere with the trackpad.  Open the Macbook and check the battery.
It could be that there is a mechanical problem with the trackpad.  Have it checked at a repair facility.
    Ciao.

  • Will this memory be compatible with my macbook pro?

Hi, I am in need of a good ram for my MacBook Pro (2011, 2.3 i5)
I've checked amazon and saw this.
    http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-Laptop-Memory-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9/dp/tech-data/ B002YUF8ZG/ref=de_a_smtd
Will this be compatible with my mac?

RAM has specifications, you need to carefully match the specifications exactly and buy your RAM from a reliable source as to get the highest quality.
Just like most Merceedes only take high grade fuel, a Mac only prefers high quality RAM.
It's rather risky opening a Mac, damage to the screws and other things can occur on some models, so to reduce this possibility (and having to ship bad RAM back) you should choose a highly reliable vendor with tested top tier RAM.
You should also know exactly how to take the right steps to install RAM, wear anti-static protection, disconnect the power and other measures to safely install your RAM correctly the first time!
Many people buy RAM without realizing there is a slot limitation.
If they have 1.5 GB and two slots, they foolishly buy another 512MB RAM module to try to attain 2GB, when they actually need another 1GB module.
So with that I give you a link, I get no compensation, just use their "evaluator" to make sure you get the RIGHT RAM for your make and model of machine. If you don't want to buy from them that's perfectly fine, just get the right specs right the first time.

  • I need to know how many pins my memory has in a 15" macbook pro duo core

I just got this computer for my daughter I wanted to know how much memory it will hold and support. and pin number to make sure it fits. I know that it list 1GB (single SODIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300)

Open System Profiler (In your Utilities folder) and under Hardware Overview, look for the model identifier.  That will identify the MBP.
    Ciao.
