Hi, I just installed my first Arch system (Nova). It was a bit of a challenege, but by reading the docs and this forum I was actually able to fix most issues to the point I now have a functional system. My one remaining problem is that Evolution won't send my mail, responding with a message:
error while performing operation: MAIL FROM response error: command unrecognized:""
I'm using Evolution to get my mail to and from POP3 account with my ISP. I tried to start Evolution from a terminal but I didn't get any other messages this way. Evolution works and will fetch my mail, just won't send it... Kmail does receive and send without any problems.
BTW, is there any way of enabling spellchecking in this build?OK I never did solve my Evolution problem - I just had to put it aside. But today inspired by Austin's post, I tried something: just for a lark I changed Evo's setting to "send via sendmail", and tried to send a message. Here's what appeared in /var/spool/mail :

now, that sender looks a bit screwy, does it not? Shouldn't it be "[email protected]", which is what it is set to in Evolution? I think my problem has something to do with the way I set up networking on this machine, but beyond that, I'm clueless...
BTW, I said "just for a lark". This is because I didn't expect it to get anywhere, since I never started either sendmail or exim. Yet here it is - how did that happen? -
Ok, my evolution mail client has gotten to be so messed up during the last few package upgrades and me trying to fix my problems, that I now can not use any of the last three versions of evolution without some showstopper problem.
I would like to totally remove evolution and all it's settings from my system and start clean but a "pacman -R evolution" doesn't remove my settings. Can someone tell me where my evolution 2.0 settings are stored so I can wipe them away?
I've already deleted ~/.evolution but there's still something else that holds on to account setting that I can't find.
Thanks for any help! Thanks for the replies.
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/evolution
Doing the above command totally wiped away my evolution settings just like I wanted. ...Even if you didn't know what you were talking about. The bad news is that I still have all of my problems with evolution and I'm not sure why.
I use pop to get my mail but I also tell evolution to leave my mail on the server so I can use a web mail tool when I am away from my computer. Each time I start evolution, it re-pops ALL the messages from the server causing duplicates emails to appear in my inbox. It started doing that after the upgrade to 2.0.2-1 and is still present in 2.0.2-2.. Also, when I use a signature, my cursor magically jumps lines and spaces after each letter I type. That started happening after the upgrade to 2.0.1. This has caused evolution to become unusable for me.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? -
Evolution + html-links dosn't work [SOLVED]
Hi!
I just recently installed evolution 2, for my mails and calendar and such....I use Enlightenment, and Firefox is my browser of the web.
How come, that I cannot press a link in a mail in evolution and get it to open Firefox, instead it doesn't do anything at all..I have gone through the settings and can not find anything related to "open in this browser: browsername"
any ideas?
UPDATE: It finally workes, the only thing one had to do, was to install gnome, and change "default applications" then it workes in any wm/de , or so it seems at least
thanks for all the help and tipsIt worked, I tried creating the file by hand but it didn't like something so I tried a variation on the commands given in the SourceForge link.
For anyone else who wants to do this, the following commands got http and https working a treat. Thanks Linteg
~ $ gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command --type string "firefox %s"
~ $ gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/enabled --type bool true
~ $ gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command --type string "firefox %s"
~ $ gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/enabled --type bool true -
I tried to reinstall it, still crashes.

Thanks,
NateIt's your murrine theme engine that's crashing. Either use a different theme engine or build murrine from CVS/SVN/whatever they use upstream. There's fixes for this, but the murrine author hasn't released any new version with the fixes for ages (yes, this was known since GTK 2.11.x and we're at 2.12.9 now...)

SSL error after server updated certificate?
I posted about this elsewhere:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=449770&tstart=0
but the basic problem is that my imap server updated its certificate (the old one expired) and now I cannot read email at all from Mail. I can definitely still read email from other apps (e.g. Evolution on Linux), but Mail.app seems permanently hosed.
When I click on the little !-inside-triangle-inside-circle I get a message that says:
The server error encountered was: An SSL error occurred while trying to read data from the server. How can I find out more about what's going wrong and more importantly, how to fix it!?
Powermac Dual 2.7 G5 Mac OS X (10.4.6)Actually, I was referring to the next subject in the Help list:
(I'm quoting)
Importing a personal certificate to use with Mail
Mail can encrypt email messages using the Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (S/MIME) standard for sending and receiving encrypted mail, verifying the sender's identity, and ensuring the message hasn't been tampered with.
You need a personal certificate to be able to sign and encrypt email messages. Certificates are issued by certification authorities, such as Thawte and VeriSign. The personal certificate may also be called a "secure email signing certificate," "digital certificate," "Certificate Authority key," "private key," "digital ID," "secure certificate," or a ".p12 file."
To get a certificate, first go to the certification authority's website, and create an account. Then request a certificate. You may need to pay for the certificate service. You can use Safari 1.2 or later to download certificates.
Certificates are stored in Keychain Access on your computer.
To import a personal certificate:
Double-click the certificate file you receive from the certification authority. Keychain Access opens and imports the certificate.
For Keychain Access to recognize a certificate file, it must have a file extension that indicates it contains certificates. Some examples of file extensions are .cer, .crt, .p12, and .p7c.
If Keychain Access does not import the certificate, drag the file onto the Keychain Access application icon, located in Applications/Utilities.
If you still can't import a certificate into Keychain Access, the certificate may have expired or the certificate may not be valid. Check with the certification authority.
You need a certificate for each of your email addresses. If you want to use the certificate on another computer, find and copy the original certificate you downloaded from the certification authority and move it to the other computer. Double-click the certificate file to open Keychain Access and import the certificate to that computer. -

Unable to fetch mail after system upgrade
I use Evolution as the mail client for several months and everything goes fine, however, since last week, (or several days ago, I'm not quite certain), It always hangs when fetching new mails. More specifically, it hangs after the POP3 summary is successfully fetched. That is, the total amount of new mails is correctly shown, while the mail contents could not be downloaded from the server. I tried two other mail client, sylpheed & balsa, while the former worked perfectly, the latter hanged just exactly as what evolution did. Different mail servers were also tested, the results showed that all POP3 protocal based opertations were failed, but nothing wrong was found for the SMTP & IMAP based operations.
Does any one have any idea? Is is possible that Evolution & Balsa share some buggy library which functions as the POP3 mail fetcher?

Gnome clock applet doesn't show weather
For some reason, i think with the upgrade to gnome 2.22.1 from 2.22.0 the clock applet stopped showing the temperature and weather icon that it used to show. I don't know why. Anyone know of a reason?
azleifel wrote:Just configured it as well - not something I've ever used before - and it worked for me. What I did was add a location and check "Show weather" in the clock applet's Preferences dialog, closed the Preferences, clicked on the clock to bring up the calendar, clicked on Locations, hovered the mouse pointer over the location that I had added (which was under the world map) and clicked the "Set" button that appeared (which turned into a home icon).
Excellent! This worked for me and it also told me how less of a normal user that relies on GUI I am these days. Before I'd almost certainly figure this out but nowadays I feel reluctant clicking-through for solutions. Rather read and google it up. Anyway, you saved me hours for which I'm thankful!
d3br074 wrote:I tried what Azleifel suggested, but there was no "Set" button that I could find. it just wasn't there!? and I have tried removing the clock and adding it again but no change.
Did you actually put your mouse cursor over the big neat clock? Did you try to move it around the timezone area name, the time (all on the right side of the neat looking clock)? In my case - GNOME 2.32.0 - the button was called Edit. After I clicked it GNOME requested my user password (the one I've had a GNOME session running for) and once I entered it weather icon appeared on the far left side of the clock applet:
rcorder wrote:
Turns out, the clock applet will NOT show your weather/temp unless the timezone in your location matches the TIMEZONE variable set for your system (in /etc/rc.conf). For me, I had to change mine from 'America/Los Angeles' to 'PST8PDT', which is what I had in my rc.conf. After that, everything worked as expected.
Here is the same bug reported in Ubuntu:
http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-bugs … 54308.html
Seems irrelevant. I had two different timezones and was able to get it working as described above. Nevertheless, I tried what you suggested and put a timezone I choose for weather report in clock applet and that did not show it until I clicked Set button and entered my password. -
T410 + Ubuntu Lucid: Two Weeks of Use (the Good, the Bad, the Ugly)
System
Lenovo ThinkPad T410 laptop, Integrated Intel Graphics, Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200 wireless.
Fixed
Resume did not work after second suspend. Fixed by updating BIOS. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/532374
Font antialiasing misconfiguration that made small fonts look bad; had to edit ~/.fonts.conf manually to defeat the system preventing antialiasing at small font sizes. Screen is small (14") but has very high resolution (1440x900), so this seems to work ok here.
Evolution doesn't autocomplete the email addresses of people you communicate with regularly. Fixed: turn on automatic contacts and autocomplete.
Printer config didn't work til I changed system-config-printer to not use the Python on the user path: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-config-printer/+bug/328657
Emacs copy/cut (meta-W, ctrl-W) doesn't put the text being operated on into the X clipboard. Likewise, putting something into the X clipboard doesn't make it possible to paste it into Emacs via ctrl-Y. Fixed via:
(global-set-key "\C-w" 'clipboard-kill-region)
(global-set-key "\M-w" 'clipboard-kill-ring-save)
(global-set-key "\C-y" 'clipboard-yank)

Toggle state of hardware mute button and software mute button not synchronized. If you hit the hardware mute button, it lights. If you subsequently unmute via software, the sound is umuted, but the hardware mute button remains lit. Pressing the lit hardware mute button in that state will result in the hardware mute button becoming unlit but the sound muted. Seems to have gotten fixed in upgrade to 2.6.34-999-generic kernel while trying to fix USB resume issue.
USB broken after resume: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/566149 . (Installed http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-05-06-lucid/ aka kernel version 2.6.34-999-generic as per the instructions in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds while waiting for "official" kernel update from Ubuntu).
Outstanding
Sometimes Bluetooth icon in indicator applet shows a red X next to it, sometimes it doesn't. I haven't bothered with Bluetooth yet, so I don't know why it's changing state.
Sometimes audio mute button stops working. What's in syslog: keyboard.c: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 240 for each button press. Not sure why it works sometimes and not others.
HDMI audio probably busted with installation of http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2010-05-06-lucid/ to fix https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/5661492. KDE came up and warned me the device had disappeared when I rebooted with the new kernel.
Complete system lockups at various points (maybe once every couple days) requiring a hard power reset. I haven't been able to distinguish a pattern yet. Might be related to the wireless errors below; someone else claimed that a similar wireless card got hot enough under Linux to cause disconnects and weird system behavior. I haven't seen crazy temperatures yet though.
Wireless network card (Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6200, using the iwlagn driver) freaks out every 20 minutes or so and "restarts" (whatever that means). Seems to be a firmware problem. Symptom: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x2000000. in syslog. sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off doesn't fix it, upgrade to 2.6.34.99 kernel didn't fix it, can't seem to find any newer firmware to try than what's in http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-6000-ucode-9.193.4.1.tgz. Reported bug at http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2205 as per http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/?n=fw_error_report
Some potentially related Ubuntu info: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1142917.html
WTF in syslog, every so often: wpa_supplicant[1196]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys plus about 10 other lines of gibberish. Probably related to the microcode problem above, no use trying to figure it out until that gets fixed. See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/548992
At boot time, xdpyinfo | grep resolution still reports wrong DPI (reported: 96x96; actual: 120x120) and screen size (reported: 381x238mm; actual: 300x190mm) even after generating an xorg.conf and adding a DisplaySize 300 190 to the single Section "Monitor" in the config. This doesn't seem to be harming anything, but I don't know really what uses this info. Using xrandr -dpi 120 fixes the resolution and screen size reported by xdpyinfo.
Firefox is a problem child for display at 120DPI (native screen DPI); some fonts are huge or tiny when they shouldn't be. Setting the layout.css.dpi in about:config to 120 seems to have no effect. This makes Firefox unusable for me on this system. Thankfully, Google Chrome doesn't have the same problem.
Fingerprint reader unsupported.
When bringing up a backgrounded Emacs window, sometimes Emacs refuses to give me control of the point in that window until I sacrifice the chicken of selecting any item from that window's menu bar.
Emacs acts upon first click of any frame; clicking in a background emacs window reposititions the point in that window. I tried to fix this by adding (setq x-mouse-click-focus-ignore-position t) to my .emacs file as per http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Mouse-Commands.html. This actually solved the problem: the first click of a window no longer repositioned the point. Unfortunately, contrary to the docs and contrary to the experience of somebody else in #emacs on freenode IRC, this setting also makes the mouse useless for selecting text, moving the point, or scrolling the window text in emacs. It just won't do any of those things for me anymore when this option is set. I can't even shift click on a window to set the font size. This symptom is worse than the problem I was trying to solve by doing it, so I left it off.
Audio CD burning doesn't work from Rhythmbox: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/brasero/+bug/543892
Pulse Audio advertises airport express send capability; it doesn't actually work (very choppy playback, unlistenable). http://pulseaudio.org/ticket/495#comment:23
Opening Rhythmbox from the applications menu doesn't actually open the main window, it just creates a toolbar icon. You then need to know enough to go click on "Show Rhythmbox" in the toolbar icon dropdown.
Konversation: sometimes the mouse pointer "disappears" while hovering over the nick list and the channel list. Only fixed by a restart of Konversation (closing the window and restoring it from the system tray doesn't help).
Cut and paste is, as always, horrific. You need to use Shift-Ctrl-C in the Gnome terminal vs. Ctrl-C in other Gnome apps; Emacs meta-W doesn't put things onto the X clipboard by default, etc. I really don't understand why you can't remap cut copy and paste under Gnome. If you could remap the Gnome keybindings for cut, paste, copy, etc, I'd bind copy to Windowskey-C, paste to Windowskey-V, cut to Windowskey-X, and Undo to Windowskey-Z. Then at least for all Gnome apps that followed the system keybindings, most of the pain would disappear, because the cutnpaste shortcuts wouldn't step on alternate meanings.
Still doesn't look quite as nice as the Mac does, dispite newer and better video and display hardware, no matter how many hours I spend messing around with display settings, font settings, etc.Not sure how you figure it's an "advanced router" problem. I'd be happy to buy a different router, but I'd need to be told which one to buy. The router I'm connecting to is a barebones Linksys WRT54G (the blue and black one with the two antennas that you see everywhere). These routers are maybe the most common router on the planet, AFAICT.
I have also seen Compiz lockups, but I didn't mention those in the above; the lockups I'm seeing are true system lockups. The system stops responding to any input on network, so it cannot even be restarted remotely. -
Evolution to start in Calendar - Work Week View
When I open evolution calendar it always open in day view. I would like to open in the view it was when I closed the program (like it behaves on ubuntu for example).
Any hints?

How to get murrine dust theme to work? (new concept theme for ubuntu)
hello!
i just want to try and install the new concept theme for ubuntu - DustTheme!
but i don't get it to work. it uses the murrine-engine - but when i want to select it via gtk-chtheme or gtk2_prefs it does not sets the colors or anything else. when i hit apply, the standard ugly gtk-theme will be selected.
anyone here who actually uses the theme?
more information:
DustTheme Ubuntu Wiki
installed packages:
gtk-engine-murrine 0.53.1
also tried: gtk-engine-murrine-svn rev 94
please help, thanks...

Hrm, I'm not quite sure what you mean. I don't see "profile" anywhere in the gtkrc - everything seems to be labeled as "style" already.

Evolution opens link in current window not in window Firefox is running in
Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS, Gnome 3.12.2 due to lockups of system I removed the Ubuntu version of Firefox and installed 33.1.1 from the Mozilla site. Since then whenever I click on a link in a message Firefox will open in the same window Evolution is in not in the window Firefox is currently running in. Not only that but it will open to my homepage not to the link that has been clicked on.
Try redoing your link and, this time, deselect the link on the page and look at the inspector window to see if anything has changed. Then check the 'make hyperlinks active box". Your linked page should open in the browser when you click the link on the iWeb page.
If this is OK do a "publish all to .Mac" and empty your browser cache before visiting your site.
