    <!-- VERY important to include-->

  • Why, when I click on an email link in Firefox 4, GMail hijacks my browser instead of opening Thunderbird??

Suddenly, anytime I click on an email link in Firefox 4, Gmail opens a popup window. This does not happen if I click an email link in IE 8.0 or Google Chrome. In Tools > Options > Applications, Thunderbird is set as my default in Firefox 4. If I go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options, Thunderbird is the default email client as well. Clearing cookies and settings did not resolve this problem. What is going on?

I have the same problem, and I also wondered if Google toolbar has anything to do with it. There GMAIL was set as the default mail application at first. I have removed that setting, but Firefox 4.0.1 continues to use GMAIL instead of Outlook which is my selection for mailto handling.

  • I am unable to get videos on Youtube to operate from Firefox. They do work from Internet Explorer. Have tried youtube from Firefox in Safe Mode - SAME PROBLEM!!

Until now I've had no problem getting Youtube videos to show from Firefox. But now I've been unable to watch any videos (or audios) from the Youtube site when browsing in Firefox. When I go Internet Explorer and bring up Youtube the videos/audios play just fine. I've tried doing this under Safe Mode with the same result. No Youtube pictures from the Firefox browser.
I like Firefox but will revert to IE if I have to.

Firefox opens up, but, this morning, I can't access any links via Firefox. I can via Explorer.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Open a Telnet link with Firefox and bad things can happen

I happened to come across a site with a number of links, and the one I chose happened to be a telnet link. Here was my experience, and I had to put myself into the shoes of the average user who knows nothing about programming.
The link that caused Firefox trouble when Firefox was chosen to run it is this:
    telnet://dxc.nc7j.com:7300
Click on the link and Firefox tells you that you need to select a program to open the Internet Shortcut Shell extension DLL. I have never heard of this, and I have no idea what to do here.
    Choose to open with Firefox.
Now, if some error-handling routine had caught that Firefox, which is not capable of doing Telnet, was selected by the unknowing person behind the keyboard to go ahead and do Telnet, the error-handler would advise the user to the fact that this protocol is not supported and kill the process that is going to run out-of-control otherwise. Or cause to open the program that will run the Telnet session.
Better yet, I clicked on the Telnet link and offer a better description of the choices.
After all of what happened below, I installed Iron, a Chromium-based browser, and it opened a Telnet session window right away.
So what did happen, I clicked on Firefox to do this chore and was greeted by a never-ending opening of empty tabs and upon closing the browser, it relaunched and was off to the races again. And again.
OK so this ain't getting us anywhere.
Firefox opens once again, this time hit the big red X to close it, and let the prompt to close however many tabs anyway prompt sitting there.
I chose to run CCleaner, and I set that to blow away Firefox Cache and session. Run CCleaner, and tell it to force Firefox closed when it prompts that Firefox is open.
If by chance Firefox launches again, timing was perfect that the file that was causing Firefox to open was not yet cleaned, so run the CCleaner again a few times. When Firefox is no longer opening, we are back to the world of sanity.
Now, I could go in and reset the Tools Options Applications tab and look for Telnet, and replace the use of Firefox with "ask me."
Fortunately, I know a little more than some about the computer, and I knew I had to use a utility to clear out the Firefox cache.
You have a description of the issue in your knowledgebase, but it has Firefox opening endless empty tabs, but Firefox was closed and the situation is under control.. Restart Firefox manually, start a new session and then enter the Tools menu and fix the setting.
There is a knowledge base article on this very topic, but it has the user close Firefox and then all is back to normal. One can open Firefox and get into the menu to fix the issue. There was a mention in there about malware as a possible cause of the constant reopening I experienced, but Malwarebytes scans were clean.
"Well, this is embarrassing!" I have seen that nice touch to Firefox for many years, and may I compliment those who thought of that one.

I agree, it can become a vicious circle.
The default setting to try to restore all the windows and tabs automatically after a crash isn't the best setting. Personally I do change that so I get the "this is embarrassing" screen. So one option would be to file a bug report suggesting this be changed going forward.
Another potential follow-up action would be to update the knowledge base article to better address how to recover in these situations. For example, a user could start up Firefox without restoring the previous session by:
    * Launching Firefox with a specific URL
    ** Using a desktop shortcut
** Using a link in an external application
** On the command line, typing firefox.exe "about:blank"
** (Possibly more ways to do it)
    * Renaming the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder
** On the plus side, preserves the option to restore that session later
** On the minus side, difficult for many users to find folders hidden by the OS, and the .js extension may be hidden by the OS
Since the KB is a wiki, you can go in and make edits and improvements. The syntax is a bit funky, but not much worse than this forum.

  • After removing the "Live Security Platinum" virus, Firefox crashes every time I close it and it runs very slowly (v14.0.1). Is there any way to fix this?

Firefox doesn't exactly crash while I'm using it. The thing is that when I close it and reopen it, it says it crashed and offers to restore the previous session. To my knowledge, this didn't happen until after I had the "Live Security Platinum" virus and removed it. Firefox is also very, very slow. Has anyone else had this particular problem?

Hi there, sorry about your problems. It could be that the virus remover didn't fully clean up Firefox.
Try the Reset Firefox feature, which should restore it back to a normal working state without removing your personal data such as bookmarks: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/reset-firefox-easily-fix-most-problems?s=reset+firefox&r=0&e=es&as=s#os=mac&browser=fx13

  • After removing system fonts and reinstalling fonts, FireFox will not start

After removing system fonts and reinstalling fonts, FireFox will not start! When I start FireFox the "Mozilla Crash Reporter" opens as if FF just crashed??? I don't see any records in event viewer. I am using FF v3.6.3 on a Windows 7 box. I tried uninstalling 3.6.3 and installing 3.0.18 and had the same problem!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

The files with submitted crash report ids are inside the ''submitted '' directory, from the directory you found the LastCrash.txt timestamp file.
The file names will begin with '''bp-'''
There might be more information from the crash report, but it might just tell us you are crashing the first time Firefox tries to use a font.
One thing I suppose you could do is select only those fonts you've got in Tools -> Options -> Content -> Fonts and Colors -> Advanced and then uncheck the '''Allow pages to use their own fonts''' option.
    See http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Options+window+-+Content+panel#Fonts_Dialog
To be honest, I can't find anything on this Netscape Font Navigator and it sounds highly dubious.

When I click email links on firefox, it opens AOL, but comes up like this.. "The file may not be supported by AOL, AOL will try to open it as a text file if you choose to continue" how to fix? and yeah, I know, ditch AOL and all that good stuff, but I have so many things tied into my email address that it's not in the cards atm..
    Thanks!

That file might have moved to a different location on the server. I think you'll need to check with RefWorks support or your local IT department on why the install page links do not work.

  • I lost all my unpinned 30 tabs and could not restore it, when Adobe update opened a link by firefox, which was not running in the background.

I lost all my unpinned 30 tabs and could not restore it, when Adobe update opened a link by firefox, which was not running in the background.
I guess what I have experienced might be a special case of 'Restore previous sessions'. The actual situation was that after I rebooted my laptop, Adobe update jumped out indicating an update being finished successfully. After I clicked on the 'close' button of the Adobe window, it automatically started firefox and linked to its website. But I did not find the 'Restore previous sessions' page this time. Then I restarted firefox, this time there was a start page with 'Restore previous sessions'. However, sadly enough, it is only restored my pinned pages plus the Adobe website. Actually, I am using 'bookmark all tabs' from time to time to secure opened tabs, but this time I did not expect such an incident. I would suggest to improve the 'Restore previous sessions' with multiple time tags and appear in all cases including my reported case here, after updating firefox, crashes etc. I like firefox in most occasions, therefore believe and hope it becomes better and more robust. Thank you very much!

    Hi,
Please see the following support request: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2628065
I think the best option would be to leave feedback here to let the relevant development team know about the problem you have had: https://input.mozilla.org/en-GB/feedback
Also you could try the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/session-manager/ Session Manager] add-on which gives more control over how sessions are restored.
    I hope that helps

Did you try to change that file action in Tools > Options > Applications
