Comp doesnt recognize that iPod is connected

When I connect my iPod (15 gig, 3rd gen) via dock to USB, the computer does nothing. I tried skipping the dock, still nothing. I tried using my friend's iPod cable, still nothing. I know for a fact that it is not a usb port problem because other hardware will respond.
What should I do?
Do I need to reset the iPod? << i hope this to be a last resort?

So I if you go into Itunes and unclick the "start itunes when ipod is plugged in" check box this fixed this problem.

my  5th generation ipod acts like it is going to sync and then "ejects" itself before even 1 song can be synced. It then doesnt recognize that it has been ejected and keeps the"do not disconnect" icon on the screen even after unplugging. What do I do?  it also makes a lot of noise while connected to the computer.

Is the camera damaged? Could be a hardware problem.
    Try:
Close the Camera app in the multitasking bar, then try again.
Restart/Reset/Restore your iPod. In that order.

  • My computer no longer recognizes my iPod Touch. And the iPod Touch does not recognize that it is connected to a computer.

My computer no longer recognizes my iPod Touch. And the iPod Touch does not recognize that it is connected to a computer.  It has worked great for many days until today.
I’ve tried two different Apple cables.
I’ve tried different USB ports on the computer.
I have rebooted both the Mac and the iPod.
I’ve wiggled the cables and checked for dust in the connectors.
The iPod charges using this same cable connected to wall wart.  That’s a good sign.
Both the Mac and iPod seem to work fine separate from each other.  They just won’t talk anymore.
    Mac mini
    1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo
    OS 10.4.11
    iTunes 9.2.1
    iPod Touch 32GB, version 3.1.3 (7E18), model PB533LL

I found this possible solution on another support thread, so I tried it.
    turn off iPod
hold Sleep and Home buttons to start it.
When Apple appears, let go of Sleep button, but keep holding Home button.
When screen goes blank, let go of Home button.
Connect cable and check iTunes to see if it has conencted.
This did not work for me.
I then turned off the iPod, restarted the Mac, and restarted the iPod normally.
I connected them with the cable, and it works like normal.  :-)

  • Why will my iPad 2 not recognize any iPod cables? I have tried two different cables in both the wall and in my laptop, but it will not register that it is receiving power, nor will the laptop recognize that they are connected.

Crizzo is right, the best way to charge is with the included power block. That said, the USB cords are interchangable as far as an of us know. (just not power bricks, iPhone and iPod bricks put out 5W of power, the iPad wants 10W and will always say 'not charging' if plugged into less power than it requires even though it will charge, just very slowly)
    If you have tried to charge your iPad - with the iPad charger - with multiple cables and multiple computers and get no joy then it's time to head to the apple store and have them check it out. The 30 pin USB port can go bad - mine did - and it's a manufacturer's defect (unless there's any sort of obvious damage) and should be covered under the warranty;

Hey, Thanks a lot.  It took quite a bit of time to resurrect this ipod.  I tried the upgrade again, but still would not recognize my ipod. So I went to the next step and reset my ipod, wiping of all of the information like it was new.  This helped my laptop see the ipod on itunes, but did not sync. So, I deleted the itunes off my computer completely, restarted and then reinstalled the newest itunes, and then restarted.  Finally, it recognized my ipod and started to download each song.  It took awhile as there was 602 songs, but finally it works.  Yea!!!  I never had any problem with my old nano, but this touch has been another animal for sure. Thank you again and also the community for information.  This was a helpful forum and will recommend to others if they get stuck with their ipod or iphone.  Take care, Karen

  • HT1386 My ipod touch will not sync to itunes after installing version 11.  My computer recognizes that it is connected, but itunes, media moneky, and sharepod would not recognize it.  I tried every suggestion apple and other community folks suggested-no l

itunes diagnostics only finds that no ipod is connected when it really is.  I have tried different cords, unistalled/reinstalled itunes, erased my ipod started over, restarted computer, etc.  My ipod is useless now that I cannot sync it wth itunes and there is now no music on it.  Its a paper weight now.  All of the posts I have read have no solution for this.  I would love to go back to itunes 10 because none of this occured until I downloaded that version.

  • ITunes on my computer does not recognize my IPod when connected to my computer

When my Ipod is connected to the computer, it does not recognize there is a device. I have been able to sync my Ipod to my Itunes in almost 4 months. Songs transfer to Ipod but the playlists do not. I have tried to figure out the problem and nothing has worked so far to correct the problem. I hope someone is able to help me.

    Hello bre8613,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning recognition issues:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may not appear under Devices in iTunes after you connect it to your Windows PC. Any of the following may also occur:
The device cannot be restored in iTunes.
An exclamation point, question mark, plug symbol, or "X" appears next to the device's entry in Device Manager.
During an update or restore, the device may no longer be recognized by iTunes

can somebody explain to me why my itunes library wont recognize my ipod anymore. and can somebody help me fix it without having to delete all 951 of my files and resyncing it?

Connect the iPod to your computer and look at the storage used by the various categories as shown in the colored bargarph in iTunes.
    Come back with the results.

  • Itunes has all my songs but doesnt recognize my ipod

OK, short story. Brother-in-law with dialup access used my cable internet computer to download videos to my nieces video enabled ipod. Also downloaded the newest updates. So now when i open itunes my songs are not highlighed and a msg appears "The ipod is linked to another itunes library. Do you want to change the link to this itunes music library and replace all the existing songs on this ipod with those from this library?" I clicked yes and lost every friggin song on my ipod! But they are still in itunes, just not highlighed. How do i get itunes to recongize that it has my songs and i want them back on my ipod?
      Windows XP

Are you seeing this grey text when the iPod is connected? Grey text when you look at the content and lock symbol at the bottom of the screen simply shows that your iPod is set to "automatically update songs and playlists". When you clicked yes to the question about linking the iPod to the library it will have overwritten what was on the iPod with what was in iTunes at that moment. With the iPod connected go to iTunes> Edit>Preferences>'iPod' tab>"Manually manage songs and Playlists". That will allow you access your iPod directly and the text will be black rather than greyed out: Managing Your Songs Manually
