SOOOO.... i'm stuck. can't boot, can't repair, can't do anything. any other possible suggestions before i throw this thing away?

Yes, Like I said, it sounds like the Drive is dying, but in SU mode you might try...
/sbin/fsck_hfs -f
Or possibly stronger Disk Repair tools...
Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD/DVD though.

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

  • IBook G4 Won't Boot - 'Disk Utility' sees no drive?

    Hi everyone,
Over the past week, I've started to see my old iBook G4 (Late 2004 Model) acting odd. It started with a sort of generic "Mac OS X has encountered an error and must restart" type of message.
Now it won't boot. It gets to the Apple logo screen with the progress indicator, but never gets past that.
I put the Tiger disc in and rebooted, while holding down "C" -- and once I boot from the DVD, I'm getting varied results.
The first time it booted, it showed the HDD fine, but when I verified the disk, it mentioned that the disk needed to be fixed.
So I clicked "Repair Disk" and it went through a lot of HDD noises and such, then shut down.
When I restarted it, I can no longer see the HDD when I boot from the DVD. Yikes!
Any other steps I can take?

Sorry to say this but it sound like hard drive failure. You could get DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html It can repair the directory, but it can't repair hard drive failure itself.
Another suggestion is to take it in to a nearby Apple Store or Apple reseller:

HI. I have a computer that i just finished putting together a couple oif days ago and for some strange reason it wont boot. The D Bracket shows led 1,2, and 4 red, while 3 is green. This is "Initializing Keyboard Controller." I have tried removing the battery and setting the jumper to clear to clear CMOS but still it won't boot. My screen dosen't come on and the only thing that really happens is the fans spin. I haven't reset any settings on my Mobo. First of all - have you tried another keyboard ( ordinarie ps/2 ).
    Other things that could give strange problems;
    - check for if Motherboard shorten / chassi contact ( check standoff´s between the MB and chassi - correct mounting and right number at the right place )
    - reseat your cpu
    - reseat memory ( other memory ) and test other slots

  • Macbook won't  boot up blue screen, volume check failed

Yesterday, my friend's Macbook wouldn't boot up properly. First it came up in terminal mode with the following message displayed:

Today did a re-start. Could not get into Safe Mode. White apple logo screen ran for 3 minutes with progress indicator (circle of sticks) followed by blue screen with progress indicator for 7 minutes, followed by blank blue screen.
Started up in single user mode and ran fsck
    Results were:

This Macbook was purchase approximately 60 days ago. Is there a simple fix to this before going back to Apple?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hello Joe.
Although similar to running fsck, boot from the Tiger install disc #1 that shipped with this MacBook and run Disk First Air repair on the hard drive.
If there is a hard drive directory problem that cannot be successfully repaired after running DFA repair several times, the directory problem is substantial and the options are using a more substantial disk repair utility such as Disk Warrior (not sure if DW has been updated for a Mac with an Intel processor or not) but if so, there is no guarantee but DW has been known to work miracles or reformat the hard drive HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled and then reinstall OS X and all included software.
You can call AppleCare but they will have you or your friend run DFA repair and do the same. Unless there is hard drive damage that is covered under warranty, there isn't much else AppleCare can do and hopefully your friend has/maintains a backup since this is a good example for why maintaining a backup is so important.

  • Intel iMac won't boot & Disk Utility error-can't verify disk

I posted earlier today that my 24" intel iMac (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo) froze yesterday after a Safari crash. I had to shut it down with the power button. Since then it won't start up. Sometimes it starts, then shuts off. Other times it starts, then the little gear just spins. I've done the keyboard commands for RAM, the complete disconnect of power, then reconnect, and the Disk Uitility with the install disk. When I do Disk Utility to verify, it gives me a red-letter error that it cannot verify on both verification checks. I have also tried, via the install disk, to repair by using a Time Machine backup, but that utility has been spinning and spinning on my Time Machine for hours, and I cannot even click the "Continue" button because it is busy (checking the time machine?)
I am out of ideas as to how to move on from here. My AppleCare expired 2 months ago, so that's a problem. I've had no major issues before now, except for earlier this year when Mail wouldn't open for some reason. Anyway, I'm at my wits' end here. I NEED my Mac. I'm disabled and have no better source of entertainment or socializing. My hobbies are editing audio, video, & photos. Without my Mac, I'm just in the middle of the sea in a raft with no oars. Any helpful suggestions will obviously be much appreciated. Thanks.

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Windows 8.1 won't boot after repair loop fix

I have a 1 year old Gateway desktop with Windows 8.1 installed at the factory so I have no Install disk. My problem began when the computer went into a repair/recovery loop which I found out is a common unresolved bug for Windows 8.1. After hours and hours
of internet search and trial and error I was able to get the repair loop resolved by going into command prompt and typing "bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled No}". I then tried rebooting and the Recovery page came up stating:
Your PC needs to be repaired.
The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
    File: NETIO.SYS
    Error code: 0xc000000f
When I tried all of the options to address this problem none of them worked. I can't even boot into safe mode. Any suggestions?

    Hi Boomer3s,
Can we boot into the Windows Recovery Environment now (Restart and keep pressing "Shift")?
If the Windows Recovery Environment is not available ,we can choose to boot from a installation media .We can make a Windows 8.1 installation media here.
Create installation media for Windows 8.1
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-HK/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
    a)      Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8.1 from it.
    b)      In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘Language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
    c)       Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
    d)      Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.Or the "System restore option "
    Hope this helps
    Best regards

  • SSD EXTERNAL BOOT DISK REPAIR - FEW TIMES IMPOSSIBLE LATER PERFORMED

Since approx may I boot my iMac from external 500 GB Samsung SSD on Seagate Goflex TB adapter.  Installed story here https://discussions.apple.com/message/22045230#22045230.
Later, after a TB SW upgrade may be in June I experienced the Freezing only 2 or 3 times apparently without any problem (after new boot no data loss and Mac performing OK).
I did today a routine Disk Verify and Repair. Verify found some minimal problems and suggested to boot from the recovery partition for a full repair.
Instead of boot from the recovery partition I rebooted from the iMac internal original HD (I keep it for safety as an exact clone of the external SSD).
Run disk utility as verify and it refused to verify with message: Disk need to be repaired. Bur Repair was impossible, one or 2 times external SSD not mounted and impossible to mount. Rebooted, now SSD mounted but still repair impossible, Disk Utility suggested backup an reformatting. Tryed again and later repair was performed. Checked again few times: everithing OK. The SSD is now working proprly.
I am now asking how this behaviour  could be explained.  Could be disk warrior or any other SW of better help for a diagnosys ?
Thanks for any soggestion and best regards.

Backup your files, if possible.  Your only recourse is to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.  Do not copy or backup files from Windows.  If at all possible boot from another drive like your external HDD by installing OS X on the external drive (unless it is already a bootable drive.)  You can then copy your data from the faulty OS X volume before erasing it.
You should never permit your free space to drop so low.  One should maintain 10-12 GBs or 10-15% of the volume's total capacity, whichever is greater.
Since this problem will likely recur I suggest you consider just replacing the drive with one that is considerably larger.  I would also be sure to arrange to maintain a bootable backup on an external drive in case problems such as this one occur.

  • Creating a boot disk with minimal system

I just upgraded to Tiger. I have an external FireWire drive that has two partitions. One (large) partition is for a backup of my Mac's entire hard drive. The other (much smaller partition) is a boot drive - that boots from Mac OS 9. It's time to update the OS on the boot drive (and put a copy of Retrospect on it - in case I ever need to recover from a disaster).
My question is, how do I install a "minimal" system (10.4) on the smaller partition, and make it a bootable drive. The partition has 4.0GB of space. (I hope 4 gigs is enough.)
I apologize if this question is already answered elsewhere on this site. I looked in the knowledge base and in several forums and couldn't find the answer.

    Hi Clinto
Those 'minimal' installs date back to a time when you could run a Mac with just the System, the Finder and a couple of extensions. (Well I exaggerate but you know what I mean.)
They would omit most extensions, inits and control panels (QuickTime, AppleScript, networking, printer drivers etc etc), the idea being that you could squeeze the bare bones of the OS onto a floppy and boot in an emergency.
When you install OSX you are offered options not to install printer drivers or foreign language packages. And that's about as minimal as it gets. All the key technologies do get installed, along with the standard-issue applications like Safari, Mail, TextEdit... They're inextricably linked in a way that the elements of the different Classic OS's never were.
The page referred to above says you need a minimum of 3GB of install space for Tiger.
    Hope this helps.

  • No boot disk found when system is turned on

Hello all, and thanks in advance for answering my question. I booted my intel based iMac from an Ubuntu Linux live cd to install Linux to a partition that I had set aside using disk utility but did not end up installing Linux. When I restarted the computer after removing the Linux CD, the screen was white for a few seconds longer than normal and then an error message appears saying that now bootable volumes were found and please insert a bootable disk and so I put in the OS X install disk that came with the computer but it still refusies to boot and does not respond to key presses at power on so I cannot eject the OS X DVD. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Have you tried starting up while holding the Option Key? That will take you to startup manager and you can select the startup disk.
When you started from the OS X DVD, did you do that while holding the C key?
You can also do the PRAM reset by starting up while holding command-option-P-R keys.

  • Mac Mini won't boot, disk stuck

Hello, for a description of the issue please see the next posting. Thanks for any help!!!

My problem is solved; see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1454230&tstart=0 for the solution. Essentially: you MUST have a WIRED USB connection, not even a PS2 plug with a USB adapter will do, if you need to modify the booting procedure, e.g. boot to the Installation Disk or to Save Mode.
Cheers, and thanks for the help.

  • Comp won't boot after installing Safari 4

After installing the new safari 4 on my Powermac G5, you have to restart the comp. Help... now I only get a grey screen! safe mode didn't work... what to do?
    Message was edited by: MarcoKoolen

I also had this problem when I installed Safari 4 update this morning. After reboot system startup freezed just before showing login window.
After some research I discovered that the problem was a missing file:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore
What I did was creating a soft link to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore
    The command was:
    ln -s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/
    Maybe this will help someone.

  • IMac G3 won't boot - Disk I/O Error

    Hi,
I've bought a G3 slot loader for my son. It has OSX 10.4.3 with black install DVD. It was working fine but while running Apple S/W update it froze and had to be restarted.
Now we get the grey apple screen and the rotating disk for a minute then black screen with disk0s9 I/O Error.
At the moment I cannot boot from the OSX disk as I don't have a firewire DVD drive.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    As a further request,
Would it be possible to boot my G3 using Target Disk mode with my Intel iMac acting as a remote DVD drive? The OSX disk for the G3 would be in the SuperDrive of the Intel Mac.
I have the original OSX Tiger disk for the G3, but the fact the newer iMac is an Intel concerns me regarding the compatibility for Target disk Mode.

  • External Hard Drive won't load, Disk Utility and System Profiler crashes,

I've had the WD 1TB Passport for Mac for about a year now and as of this afternoon, my MacBook Pro stopped recognizing it. It's encrypted so when I plugged it in, my computer asked me for my password, but then it said there was an error and wouldn't mount. After restarting the computer, the password prompt for my external drive didn't even pop up. I can hear the hard drive spinning and the light flashes for a good 30 seconds before going solid. I have tested my USB ports with flash drives and they are reading them just fine. I tried to run  Disk Utility but it goes into the never-ending loading mode. So then I go to the "About my Mac" page and clicked on storage, and the profiler crashed (never-ending loading). Can anyone help me? It was working just fine up until today. I even tried different Micro USB chords on it. This drive is incredibly important to me and I would appreciate not having to erase anything from it (kinda defeats the purpose of backing up a computer if the external hard drive is the one needing the backup).
    I have a
