-Problem: System shuts down automaticly after I turn it on for about 5-10 seconds.
I AM PISSED OFF. This computer I put together just doesn't seem to work! I tried everything. The problem is... I would turn on my computer and then it just shuts off after about 5-10 seconds! I don't have time to even see the monitor turn on! This is not even the first time, I brought all my parts off of www.newegg.com I even returned my motherboard AND my CPU for new ones, And the new ones have the SAME effect!! It turns on then off!! I have double, triple checked ALL connections and compatiblity. EVERYTHING IS 100% OK! IT SHOULD WORK! But it doesn't?! What is this? The problem?! OMG I don't believe this crap.
I have tried:
-Different Ram
-Different Vid card
-Reseting the BIOS
-Putting MoBo settings in safe mode
Things I know for sure:
-Not CPU Damage problem
-Not ram problem
-Not Harddrive/CD rom problem
-Not Power problem
-Not Case/Fan/Anything else problem
-Very Pissed off Customer

Dichuan & UKwizkid
This problem is but all too familiar to me, sacrebleu!  :D
Indeed this is DEFINITELY a heat issue, and a PSU-heat related one, more like. Only overheating (CPU, chipset or PSU or whatever) can cause a system to suddenly shutdown (other probs would rather trigger a reboot/blue screen crash/hang).
Dichuan, there have been known issues with the Antec 430W (checkout a former thread from 'Tonyrh17' - about 3 days ago). The first time I read about this was on one of our french sites :  some guy just moved his case and the Antec T430 within simply passed away...
Not that I hold anything against Antec - I myself own a TB 480W - it is deemed the best brand for PSUs. It's just that for that particular Unit - the Antec Truepower 430 - sturdiness seems more than dubious.
This I would recommend, as I have before   : start the system as usual - leaving the case open.
I bet system will remain on MUCH longer. Might shutdown during intensive apps such as 3Dmark, though: give it a try.
Consider, as a next step, having a housefan blow directly on the mboard.   ;(
Then consider testing with another (working) PSU, this time having closed the case. If using only around 300W PSU, avoid a generic brand.
PSU overheating is more than a plausible theory to Xplain these shutdowns since modern PSUs have a built-in temperature control which shuts off unit to avoid permanent damage. Moreover, heat generated by the PSU could be spreading to the rest of the case - this includes chipset, CPU, etc...
Good luck mon ami

  • Intel iMac won't start - HELP!

My iMac won't start this morning. I get the white screen with the grey apple,
and the swirling progress thing, then after a few seconds I can hear
the sound you hear when the system shuts down. like a soft switch
going off, then it just continues swirling, still with the white
screen and grey apple, then it restarts by itself. Then we go through
the same routine. Tried booting up by holding C with the Leopard disc inside but nothing happens.I have just reinstalled Leopard as Snow Leopard left too many printers and programs lifeless, so I did an erase and install a few days ago. Since then I have used the Mac fine, switched down normally last night, but this morning it doesn't want to play.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in anticipation

Have you reset PRAM and SMC?
    Do this first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and then do this, if the PRAM does not help
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
The second one is basically disconnecting your iMac from power (and all cables), then reconnecting following a precise procedure.
If that does not help, I would restart with the Snow Leopard installation disc (insert disc and start up with the C key held down). You probably did an installation of Snow Leopard over your existing Leopard system the first time. This time, erase it completely first, then install Snow Leopard. I assume you backed up your data already.
When you get to the Installer screen (after selecting language), go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal DRIVE, not the volume indented under the drive. Go to the Erase tab. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+ and set the format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Erase the drive. Since you have the drive selected in the sidebar (not the volume), it will also re-partition the drive.
It should take less than on minute to complete the process. Quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Run the standard installation onto the blank internal drive. Hopefully, a fresh Snow Leopard install on a reformatted/re-partitioned drive will work better for you.

    Hello,
On Windows, NLS_LANG can be set in the registry or as an
    environment variable.
You can test with the commands :

  • EMac won't start, help please

I am having two problems with my eMac. The first, much more pressing, problem is that it won't start. I was having problems installing the newest version of quicktime, so on the quicktime forums I read to Repair Permissions in the Disk Utility, so I did this, and everything seemed to go well, but when I restarted my computer, it would not load. It is stuck on a light grey screen with a dark grey apple logo in the middle. My keyboard won't repond to the point where i can't even open the disk drive. My second, much less urgent problem is that my disk drive doesn't recoginize any cd's, even ones that I have used with this computer before. this problem really means nothing at this point, since my computer won't start anyways.
If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I tied all of the suggestions for my problem.
You see a blank, gray screen
    1. Make sure the latest firmware for your computer is installed. Check Apple Downloads for the latest versions. (Yes, it is installed)
    2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. This includes ADB, serial, USB, FireWire, SCSI, and PCMCIA devices. If this resolves the issue, connect one device at a time, restarting after each one, until you've determined which device is causing the issue. (All are disconnected)
    3. Remove third-party hardware upgrades such as memory (RAM), microprocessor upgrade cards, and PCI cards. If this resolves the issue, add back one item at a time, restarting after each one, to isolate the issue. Note: Apple does not provide technical support for Mac OS X when used with third-party microprocessor upgrade cards. (Don't even have any third-party hardware upgrades)
    4. Start up from your Mac OS X installation disc and check the hard disk with Disk Utility or, if necessary, fsck. (CD-drive will not even open, so can't do this)
    5. If you are comfortable doing so, reset your computer's Power Management Unit. Specific directions are available elsewhere in the Knowledge Base. (Can't find how to do this on the anywhere)
    6. Additional tips may be available in this document. (Document also had nothing that worker)
I will be buying a macbook regardless after my income tax comes in, so I don't deem the computer as worthy of spending any money to fix, but this was a pretty expensive machine to just discard, so I would like to try to get it running again.

  • MOVED: Comp won't start after BIOS Update

This topic has been moved to BIOS.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=118639.0

    Hello all
I just updated my X301 (2776LEG) with the 3.12-1.05 bios. Now my laptop won't start up when running on battery, it powers on for a short while and powers off again. This cycling keeps on going (after 30min I switched it off!) but as soon as i connect the power adapter it boots fine. Seems like this bios update f****ed up the battery power part of the computer....
I tried the bios battery trick but it only worked on the first boot and after that the same problem is present.
I have added 2gigs extra memory and a ultrabay battery and it has been working 100% for about a year now. This error started right after the bios update...
Thought that a reflash of the bios would solve the problem but i cannot reflash the bios with the same bios version...
    Any ideas ?
    Kind regards
    Tommy

  • I book won't start- help requested ASAP

I have had my Ibook for about 3 years now. Today I was burning a disk in the Itunes applicatoin as well as searching the internet. When the disk had 2 tracks to burn left, my computer shut down. Since then, I have been unable to restart it. I have tried to press the power( ON) button many times, but it will not restart. The 7th and 8th time I tried to restart it, it made a slight clicking noise. What can I do? I need to use my computer ASAP for homework and debate work. Please help.

  • Brand new imac won't start HELP!!

Just got an iMac, fresh out of the box I hit the power button, everything looks normal, OS X does its normal checks, then the desktop comes up with multicolour stripes - the desktop is cluttered with all kinds of files - a darwin console opens up then an application called Phoenix starts does a few things that were too quick and then just says PAUSED in an orange box at the top and nothing else.
I have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard so I can't actually control the thing in any way either.
It also looks like OS X 10.5 has not been pre-installed.
Please can someone help me with a suggestions as to what I can do.
(I am an experienced Mac User having used them since the original SE - I've never experienced something like this before)
    Thanks

it sounds like the iBook went to sleep during the transfer or at least it's hard drive spun down.
what you need to know is hope that simply booting from your install DVD will let you repair the iMac's hard drive. You could also try booting holding down the Command S keys on startup and when you get to the Single User Mode command line prompt follow the directions there for running fsck to repair your hard drive.
Do you have a FW hard drive? Can you copy files from iBook to FW and then from there to iMac?
And, it is always nice to have a FW emergency/backup hard drive. The iMac needs a different partition scheme to be bootable from FW than the iBook does, but you can create the proper partition type etc from a Tiger Installer and put OS X on FireWire, then see if you can backup and repair your iMac's hard drive.
MicroMat's TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now shipping and is compatible, Universal Binary and bootable. Always good to have some 3rd party utility handy.
If you are just starting out, you probably don't have much if anything installed yet, so you may want to just erase your iMac drive and restore to what it was. That would be the easiest if Disk Utility won't repair it.
Instead of powering off the iBook, I would have tried to force quit whatever was running, like Migration Assistant.

  • My comp won't start beyond...

    Hello,
I'm new and in need of help. Any at all would be grately appreciated! Here's my situation:
My computer was left on downloading something last night but the power cord was bumped out without my catching it. Around midnight I noticed it, plugged it back in, brought the screen back up, quit the application that was open and tried to open Safari. Safari wouldn't open, I tried the force quit option to relaunch the finder but it froze. So I pulled the power cord out and and unlocked the battery. When I turned the comp over to unlock the battery it made a really weird noise, like the fan hit the side or top or something, not sure. Then when I turned it back on, it would not start up beyond the white "apple" screen with the small grey timer on the bottom.
Does anyone know what to do here?? Thanx a bunch for any advice.

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption. Those unplugging's can cause directory corruption.
Here's Apple doc.#106464 on startup issues, but try that repair first!
    Cheers!

  • MACBOOK WON'T START HELP HELP OMG HELP!!/1/1kghl

SO! I recently bought a white MacBook and an iPod Nano (gen1 because I wanted them to match). Since then I have had to send in the first iPod, get a second one, and have the exact same problem--neither the MacBook nor the iPod seem to realise at all when they are plugged in. No charging, no syncing with iTunes. Nothing.
So the customer service bloke told me that I should update OS X. Alright, I toddle on off to Barnes and Noble to take advantage of the Wifi, as I live in the middle of no where and am still on dial-up. Update, update, restart time. I'm supposed to hold down the power button while it restarts.
Familiar with having to hold down keys while things happen, as I've used Windows all my life, I do. Except, apparently my button-pressing skills are TOO well-honed, because it begins loading and then turns off! Oh no! I may have held that button down a bit too long...
Easily solved, right? Just boot it up again.
Except it won't turn on! Well the little flashy LED light goes all flashy, and the thing sort of growls at me like it's in pain. The screen stays black, nothing else happens. I hold down a lot of buttons and still nothing happens. I've been trying turning it on while holding down different buttons, but still nothing. Honestly, I don't handle panic very well.
So, basically. I am totally freaking out. HELP HELP HELP PLEASE HELP.
    Please pretty please?
X-POSTED FROM INSTALLATION & WHATNOT FORUMS BECAUSE I AM TOTALLY FRANTIC. Sorry!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First off, please don't crosspost your question unless instructed to, as it only wastes bandwidth and makes it harder to track who is asking what question.
Second, sleep it off a night, with your machine unplugged and no battery inserted to get rid of your franticness. It never really pays to be frantic in front of a computer because you don't know what you are doing, and you could be your own worst enemy.
When you are ready, depress the power button only for 2 seconds and let go.
If that doesn't work reset the power manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Also try zapping the PRAM if that doesn't work:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If neither works, are you getting anything on the screen?

  • Lightroom won't start-Help

I am running Lightroom 2.5 on a Windows Vista System. I have been using Lightroom since version 1.0. My Lightroom has suddenly quit working, When I start I either get a message that Lightroom has stopped working and must be shut down or it dims and says not responding. I have left it in not responding mode for 5 hours with no luck. I have tried loading other catalogs and even creating a new catalog and I get the same results. What I see when it goes to Not Responding is strange. Customizations that I have made are not shown. The folders listed do not seem to be the folders that should be shown for the catalog and I sometimes get a screen asking me to set program update options. What has happened and what can I do? Help

I have tried creating a new catalog. Same result.
The message I get says: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 64-bit has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
Everything else seems to be working normally.

  • CHANGED OS LOGIC WON'T START  HELP!!

I need help! My 2x2.0 G5 died. I ran 10.41 and Logic Pro quite well. I got a temporary 2X1.8 G5 that had 10,5 on it. I installed 2 1/2 days worth of software and everything worked but Logic was unbearably liimited and sloooow. To try to get a few weeks work done until a Nehalem finds me. I changed the OS back to 10.4 I't had to be archive and install to go "backwards" I have a folder called "old system now. Everything is working fine except Logic. It won't even open. Is there something I can do about keychain or moving some of those 'Old system" library files to get Logic to work without having to reinstall Logic Pro twice in one week and lose preference I set up in the past week. Thanks for your help. Zangsax

What do you mean by safe mode is single user mode? ("apple+s" combination?)
There may be a hardware failure on your harddisk. Can you boot from your install DVD? Try that, run Disk Utility, and check the entire disk for errors (click repair disk).

  • Added 2x512mb RAM from Mushkin and now comp won't start

I added two sticks to my computer to increase to 2GB and the computer started to boot and identified the 2GB then went to a gray screen and froze.  Now even after I take the two new sticks out, my computer doesn't work.  It is getting power and the HD starts working, but there is no video.  It doesn't even come up with the BIOS so I can't do any trouble shooting.  I have even reset the CMOS.  Does anyone have any other ideas?

Quote from: Copterpilot on 23-March-07, 10:18:18
I just tested all the RAM sticks in another computer and they are all recognized and there appears to be no problems.  I'm thinking it can only be one of three things, the motherboard, the video card (which I didn't touch whent he problem ocurred) or the digital input part of the monitor (is this possible?)  My monitor works fine with my other computer that uses analog.  I have no way of checking the DVI  or the video card itself as my 7600GT is pcie and won't work in any of my other computers.
You have your monitor connected to DVI?  Have you tried the VGA connection?  With some monitors it's not unusual for them to lose the DVI connection - the EDID in the monitor firmware can get hosed.  With some, notably some Samsungs, you can reset it by powering the monitor on and pulling the power plug immediately, before the monitor goes to sleep.  I always have a VGA cable connected to the monitor but not actually connected to the video card... until the DVI connection gets lost - happened to me just yesterday when I uninstalled Magictune.
