Comp wont recognize when ipod is plugged into USBport
i have done everything and am at my wits end! Problem: when i plug in my ipod into the USB port it will charge, but the continuing arrow wheel that indicates it is activating will not display, nor will itunes accept its presence. in order to restore my ipod the comp. has to recognize its plugged in. i have updated the "updater" software and reset the ipod. also i have trouble shooted the USB software and it is fine, it will accept other hardware plug ins. I dont know what to do. any help would be GREATLY appericated. until its resored i cannot listen to any music or use it whatsoever. thanks

Have you tried another USB port (especially one on the back of the computer)?
Have you rebooted the machine recently?
Have you tried another USB cable?
Have you tried connecting the iPod to another computer?
Post back with your answers and I'll do my best to help!

Intel iMac won't boot up when iPod is plugged into USB port.
I have a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM and 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Purchased new from Apple in January 2007. Running Mac OS X 10.4.10. Purchased a new 80 GB video iPod (v1.2.1) from Best Buy in June. Computer stopped rebooting soon after. I began by deleting preferences of various kinds with no luck. I've reset the P RAM, the System Power Manager or whatever ya call it. I've even done an Archive Install of the Mac OS. Yet every time I try an' reboot with the iPod plugged into the USB port I get the start-up chime then the gray screen and that's it. No gray Apple, no log-in window. I shut it down, unplug the iPod and it starts right up. Please, I'm beggin' ya. I don't want to have to wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. Any suggestions?
Thanks....ABStrange -- the apple tech believes that the iMAC is trying to boot from the iPOD which is causing the hanging. Interestingly, if you wipe the iPOD clean, it will work flawlessly. The minute you put one song back on the iPOD it will hang again. Hopefully on Monday or Tuesday I'll hear something back. I'll let you know what I find out. I did mention this thread on the forum to the apple tech. Hopefully they take this seriously. Maybe it is a serious enough flaw with our iPODs that will warrant a replacement?
BTW: I upgraded to Leopard yesterday and the problem still exists. Was kind of curious to see if that had any effect. -
How do I get iTunes to recognize my iPod while plugged into the TC?
Ok So I have an Apple Time Capsule which I use as my router and NAS drive. Though I also plug my iPod into the usb port on it. The iPod is recognized on my computer and over the network easily although how can I get iTunes to recognize it and be able to add music and video?

Even though it's physically possible, I doubt an iPod is intended to work that way. Why do you want to do that?

What I believe you're seeing is the disk drive function of your iPod, which is different from the music player function. I'd give up trying to play music from your iPod while connected to a Time Capsule. -
When Ipod is plugged into itunes there is a lock icon at the bottom.
When I plug my ipod up to my itunes there is a lock icon on the bottom of itunes next to the amount of music (i.e. 6.5 days). My friends doesn't have that icon when he plugs his up to his itunes. How do I turn it off?
Manually updating is not as easy and takes away from the easy syncing from your computer to iPod.
If you really want to do it...
Manually Updating iPod
Automatically updating is easier and better, in my opinion.
To make that extra drive stay...

I have always been able to create playlists on itunes, then drag them to my ipod when it is plugged into the mac. I recently downloaded the latest version of itunes, and now am unable to do that. I can drag songs and albums to the ipod, but not my playlists. It used to be so easy, am I missing something here?
Plug your iPod into your computer, it will begin to sync. Now check to see if the playlists have been added.
If not, go to the songs tab under your iPod when it is connected to iTunes, Unless you have checked "Sync all songs (or something to those words)" you should have an option on what you can put on your iPod. Make sure to check the playlists that you want on your iPod. -
My ipod nano 4th generation only works when it is plugged into the computer; otherwise, the screen turns black and it is completely unresponsive to any efforts such as pushing buttons, reseting, etc. What should I do?
Sounds like the battery is shot and in need of a replacement. You can have Apple replace the battery for a flat fee or you can send it into a third party repair center for a bit less.
Not much else you can do for troubleshooting this one.

Why does my iPod Nano only work when it is plugged into the computer?
My iPod nana is a 4GB iPod and it does not work at all until it is plugged into my computer. It works perfect when it is plugged into the computer. It will not even turn on if it is not plugged in.
By the sounds of it, the Nano's battery is shot and in need of a replacement. You can have replace the battery for a flat fee or send it to a third party repair company for a little less.

But they work normally when not plugged in? What kind of power source are you plugging it into? It maybe outputting more than what the iPod can handle. I had this happen to an iPod I plugged into a powerstrip that was plugged into the cigarette lighter in a vehicle an experienced the same thing.

Comp doesnt recognize that iPod is connected
When I connect my iPod (15 gig, 3rd gen) via dock to USB, the computer does nothing. I tried skipping the dock, still nothing. I tried using my friend's iPod cable, still nothing. I know for a fact that it is not a usb port problem because other hardware will respond.
What should I do?
Do I need to reset the iPod? << i hope this to be a last resort? So I if you go into Itunes and unclick the "start itunes when ipod is plugged in" check box this fixed this problem.
