Compaq CQ56 219WM possible chipset defect and the voluntary replacement program

I have been having issues with my laptop for most of the time I've had it.  Issues with the fan being intermittent even when set to Always On in the bios. That issue never went away.  Problems with BSOD and hard drive even being recognized.  But as a graduate student, I haven't had much time to be without it.  So I put it on a cooler with a big fan and have been babying it as much as possible.  The hard drive's actually been perfectly fine for the last month or two, but now completely failed one month out of the 12mo warranty, but I just found out (after searching on the net what type of SATA it had, didn't want to overspend on SDD for it) there may have been a voluntary replacement program on it.  I've already purchased another hard drive that is on its way, but with the original not working there is currently no way to check the Device Manager for the exact chip set version used on mine.  My serial number does have the possibly affected 107 digits in the right spot, though.  I'm also concerned about even putting the other HD in it because I don't want the chipset to damage it, since that may have been how the other failed.  Is there anyone at HP who can email me at benjamin doubleyooo (the letter, spam bot protection) g at yahoo dot com and I can give you my serial and product numbers so you can check to see in your database what was used on mine?  Our university tech people said you should have all the necessary information without me even needing to go into Device Manager to check myself.

  • I'm running Windows 7 and iTunes and the other Apple programs wouldn't automatically update. Went through all the options and finally had to delete all Apple files and re-download iTunes. Worked fine, until the next update. Is there a glitch in the system

I'm running Windows 7 and iTunes (and the other Apple programs) wouldn't automatically update. Went through all the options and finally had to delete all Apple files and re-download iTunes. Worked fine, until the next update. Is there a glitch in the system? Does someone know of some proprietory block (I think it is related to Quicktime)? Also, once I re-downloaded everything, cleaned everything up, and deleted duplicate files, I closed down my computer. When I re-started it, iTunes was "brand new" -- all of my music, organization, tagging, etc. was gone and had to start over. Idea?

Ok, so after like 4 days of going through all these different issues, I figured out that several programs weren't downloading, and it was an issue with my wireless connectivity messing up the digital signatures, so if you plug in your comp to the modem and delete your temp files, it should start to work!

  • I want to create an app.  Can you tell me the difference between iOS developer program and the mac developer program?

I want to create an app.  Can you tell me the difference between iOS developer program and the mac developer program?
Is the difference the device you're creating your app on, or for?

iOS Developer Program is only for those who wish to develop iDevice apps. Mac program is for those only developing Mac applications. If you wish to do both, then you need to enroll in both programs.

  • I have a web site built by Yahoo Web Site Builder which does not have a Mac version, is there any compatability between Iweb and the old Yahoo program?

I have a web site built by Yahoo Web Site Builder which does not have a Mac version, is there any compatability between Iweb and the old Yahoo program? If not how do I clear off the old site so as to re publish with Iweb.

iWeb cannot import published files so you would need rebuild the site.
Yahoo hosting is notoriously poor and their tech support is awful. I would suggest you look for new hosting and start afresh. Some pointers for choosing hosting...

If you do choose to go this route, transfer your domain name registration away from Yahoo to your new host.

  • HT3905 Do I still need to install the HD writer AE 4.0 software that came with my Panasonic HC-V500 video camera or can I just upload video directly to my MAC using i-frame and the i-photo program?

I purchased the Panasonic HC-V500 video camera and it came with the HD AE 4.0 software. Do I still need to install this disc on my MAC or can I upload video directly to my computer by using i-frame and the i-movie program?

    Hi glhiker,
Your video clips will import directly into iMovie.  It's a great video editing program.  I'll include some quick video tutorials to get you started below:
    Apple - Support - Videos
When you open the iMovie application, click HELP > iMOVIE HELP on the menu bar to access the manual for the program.  One of the first topics is Importing Video.
Down the road, you may be interested in our professional video editing application, called Final Cut Pro X.

  • What do they do in the battery replacement program?

umm..i have a 4gb blue ipod mini 2nd generation and i bought it on febuary 2005, which i think when the ipod mini second generation came out..and i think my battery is starting to die..so i was thinking..what r they gonna do with it in the battery replacement program? are they gonna replace the battery in my ipod? or there just gonna give me another ipod mini or whatever?
    Dell   Windows XP

Your warranty on the iPod has expired, so this is what Apple say.
"My iPod warranty has expired. What are my service options?
Apple offers two service options for iPods that are no longer within warranty. If your iPod, iPod with color display, U2 iPod, or iPod mini requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will replace your iPod for a service fee of $59, plus $6.95 shipping.
If you own an iPod, and it requires service for any other issue, Apple will replace your iPod for the service fee listed below, plus $6.95 shipping and handling.
    iPod $249
iPod Nano & iPod Mini $189
    iPod shuffle (1 GB) $89
    iPod shuffle (512 MB) $59"
If it's just a battery replacement you require, there are cheaper options if you Google 'iPod mini batteries'.

  • I had my iPhone replaced in 2011 because of the camera shutter app defect, and the "genius" put in the wrong serial code and after update the phone will not work. What can I do?

I took my iPhone to AT&T after I tried to update to iOS 6 and the phone said I needed to insert the original sim card which was what was in the device. AT&T said to take it to apple because it had to be a software issue.  I get to the apple store and they tell me because I replaced my phone because of the defective shutter malfunction the "genius" entered in the wrong serial number by one digit causing the phone to turn into a UK phone and they could not fix it unless I have some sort of reciept or email saying it came from Apple. Mind you this is a year later with a move from TX to HI as well! So what am I able to do?? be out of a phone because they messed up?? They told me I could outright buy a new phone which I am NOT going to do because this phone worked before.

I cant find any reciept in my email or in my husbands email.  I am going to attempt to call and speak to someone who can help me because this was not my fault except trying to be normal and update my phone!

  • My CDMA Straight Talk iPhone 5 was defective and the Apple Store replaced it. But now I can't activate the new iPhone!

I have been to the Apple Store twice now, and my original iPhone has been replaced three times since Tuesday. Straight Talk says they are getting an error on their end when trying to activate and add the phone to my existing account. They are insistent that the phone I have is not a CDMA iPhone and that I need to go back to the Apple Store again to get another phone. My iPhone said that it is activated on CDMA US network, and shows bars and the 3G symbol; and yet my carrier doesn't show up on the top bar where it should be. The iPhone I have now is in fact CDMA with the part number A1429. Has anyone experienced a similar issue when they had their Straight Talk iPhone replaced?

My friend threw a Straight Talk SIM card in so now it is working on the GSM network. The service isn't as good but at least my phone works again.

  • IMac G5 (2004) logic board and the repair extension program

    Hi,
I know that there are tons of topics about logic board/power supply troubles witht the first generation G5s, and I'm sorry to start yet another new thread, but I still have some questions about this issue.
I have a first generation iMac G5. Long story short...when I first got it the computer would shut itself off sometimes after I had put it to sleep. When I would try to restart nothing would happen, but usually letting it sit unplugged a while would solve the problem (occasionally when I'd restart a different start up noise would sound and the white light would flash quickly). It happened so randomly, that I just lived with it, blaming the problem on my dorm network, or a power failure. A few days ago I tried to start the computer up and nothing happened (just a VERY faint sound like a clicking or ticking or intermitant humming...definatly electrical sounding). I unplugged it overnight, but the next day still nothing. I decided to go through the troubleshooting steps Apple lists online. The internal power button could not start it up and the second LED does not flash, which according to Apple means the logic board needs replacing. Luckily my serial # is covered by the Repair Extension Program, and I'm bringing my computer in tomorrow morning to be fixed (just in time for back to school).
I have become concerned, while browsing the discussion topics, that this fix may not be permenant. I've read a few posts that claim that they are on their third Logic Boards, and this kind of scares me. My parents bought me the computer (our family's first ever Mac) and did not purchase the AppleCare extended warranty (they had heard how reliable Macs were...hmmm.) I didn't even know that I could purchase AppleCare after-the-fact until it was several months after my 1yr warranty expired. I do appreciate the fact that Apple recognized what seems to be a common problem with this generation of iMacs, but I wonder why they did not contact the owners of these machines to let them know that the problem and repair extension even existed.
So I guess my real question is...Does anyone know if, after this repair Apple will replace the logic board if it dies again? Is there a limit to the number of qualified repairs you can get through this Repair Extension program? Also is there any other Extended warranty type thing I can purchase after my 1yr. warranty is up.
Sorry the post is so long...I'm just scared about the fate of my beloved Mac.
    iMac G5 (2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Oh man, am I actually relieved reading this thread. Just took my baby (iMac G5 first generation) in for repairs today, not knowing what was wrong with it. Luckily my serial numbers are in the range, so I'm crossing my fingers that they're going to cover this.
Brief synopsis of what happened, in case it differs from anyone else's
About a month ago, my iMac started to not wake up from sleep mode. Instead of waking up, it would just shut itself off. This continued for about 2 months, with me thinking nothing of it. Then, instead of shutting itself off, the computer would restart when I attempted to put it to sleep.
Then, last night, I was surfing the net and all of a sudden the power just failed. No noise, no "grey screen", we're talking like a millisecond later the screen was black. I treid unplugging the machine and then plugging it back in while simultaneously holding the power button to reset the PSU and still nothing. At that point it was about 1:30 in the morning, so I just went to bed not wanting to deal with it until the next day. By the time I woke up, there was a distinct smell of electrical components burning (in grade 8 shop class we used to hook up resistors to the voltage generator and crank the juice up until they fried when teach wasn't around, so I distinctly remembered the acrid stench :P)
I opened the back up and did the LED check, and #2 wouldn't even blink. So I took it in and they said they'd have to get back to me and that's where I stand now.
The thing that concerns me is that if some of the components fried that there may be possible damage to the motherboard etc. Luckily I'm not too worried about the hard drive because it did still boot up and all. People that have experience with this, what usually happens with files on your HD after a logic board replacement? Are they usually fine?
The other thing that concerns me is that apple has made no effort to contact me, and it will be 2 years after the purchasing date come November 1, 2006. I'm lucky that I caught this now before it was too late.

  • Mail and the text replacement tool

    Howdy all!
I am trying to set mail up to remember the text replacement tool from within the app at edit - substitutions but it only seems to remember the setting per email. Anyone figure out how to keep it on for good? I have text replacement turned on system wide at system preferences - language and text - text tab. Any ideas would be awesome!
    Thanks in advance,
    Murch

    Thanks,
That what I was saying. I have turned on text replacement system wide but in mail it seems you can only turn it on per email message. Can anyone else confirm this?
I have turned on global text replacement too and I don't have to do anything special in Mail now. it works in every new message automatically. what exactly do you need to do to make it work in individual messages?

  • When I click on a link in an email, nothing happens; Firefox used to open the page. I am using a Mac computer, latest OS, and the Mac mail program.

I have tried quiting Firefox and setting Safari to my default browser. Links open on Safari just fine. When I go back to Firefox as my default, I continue to have the same issue, links will not open in Firefox.

You can also quit and relaunch Firefox and then
the link will open in mac mail.
