COMPAQ CQ61z-300 CPU

I have a COMPAQ Presario CQ-61z-300 that I think has a bad CPU. Won't boot up at all. When power is turned on the fan runs but the COMPAQ flash screen does not appear. CAPS LOCK and NUM lights flash once, which tells me CPU error. What I need is info on the CPU. Manual only shows INTEL CPU's, but here is an AMD 'VISION' sticker next to the mouse pad. I need the info so I can try and order one. Info for this computer is not available online because it is a 'CTO' and I cannot get the info from the computer itself because it is dead. Any help would be appreciated.

Odds are strong it is not the CPU but the motherboard. CPUs very rarely fail but motherboards fail frequently. The motherboard part number should be inside the memory compartment. Here is the Service Manual:

  • CQ61z-300 Blink Code - 2 blinks - Corrupt Bios

    Hi guys,
I'm getting a corrupt bios code on a Compaq  CQ61Z-300. We've tried removing the battery, holding down the power button for a minute, plugging it in and turning it on to no avail. We've also tried Windows key + b to reset it and no luck. I even removed the CMOS battery for a few minutes to no avail.
I'd like to avoid replacing the whole motherboard. Can anyone show me what the bios chip looks like, and where I can get a replacement? I feel comfortable soldering it in myself. Thanks!
EDIT: I 'think' i found the bios chip. Is it the one right by the CMOS battery with an MX on top of it? If so, will desoldering and resoldering this back into place work or do I need a completely new chip?

The saga continues. I have found on the internet (but not at any HP hosted site) that if you prepare a FAT16 thumb drive (format /fs:FAT e and copy onto it the BIOS file, (renamed, taking out the last 3 characters and changing the .fd  Like the following  procedure taken from a forum post:
I go the thing to start the beeping thing. It beeped 7 times, but never shut down, nor did it seem to fix the bios, same symptoms. I might be doing something wrong, would be nice if HP would document this procedure.
Note, I got the BIOS update from HP, which wasn packed into a sp.....exe, that I could get the .fd file by opening with winrar (or zip?). Or, install it on another machine and exiti out of the BIOS update program (DON't try to run it!!)
    1. Download the Bios version F.0C from
Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv5-1095eo Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (Uni...
    2. Extract this file to a new folder.
    3. Rename the file 3602f0C.fd to 3603.fd
    4. Make 3 more copies of newly 3603.fd, and renamed them3603.bin, 3603.rom and the last was only 3603
    5. Copy all the four files on flash. The size of the flash should be as small as possible. Not more than 2 GB in my case.
    6. Remove the Battery, Power Plug and press start button for 30 seconds.
then bout your fingers on Windows and "B" and then press power button.
    7. Plug in the power cable. (If nothing happens then don't worry, you can just remove your finger from the power button and press that again because it takes some time to blink the lights on the laptop).
    8. After the fist beep, remove the fingers from windows+B, and listen the number of beeps, there were a lot . May be due to the number of files on the flash.
    9. After a long wait of 1 minute, it shuts down it self.
    10. Then restart the laptop. in a minute you will get the initial bios screen,
    asking for the settings.
    11. You can reset the the booting sequence if you like to. Otherwise no problem.
    12. What I did was that " I accepted the CMOS settings and restarted the laptop, and kept my pressing F11., for recovery and the my system was fully recovered.
That's it. It seems quite easy if you follow all the points by 0.0, raj85 and dannyres
But the difficult point to search for the Bios version and renaming it.
Again thanks to every one. Thanks Thanks.

  • Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery

Kernal_task is taking up 300% CPU on my macbook pro while on battery, but goes back to normal while it's plugged into power source.  Battery life is still normal.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I just received my MBP Retina yesterday. I have not installed anything and the system is running so slow that when I type the text on the display is lagging behind my typing. Scrolling, app switching, etc. are all either choppy or I have to wait. Activity monitor shows kernal_task %CPU jumping between 500% to over 600% with 83 threads and about 675MB real memory. The fan is on continously, does not matter if it's plugged in or on the battery. NOT A GOOD FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE FOR ME.

I have an old Socket 7 MS-5156 motherboard, there is not even a listing on this webpage for Socket 7 anymore, anyway will a AMD K6 2 300 cpu fit into this motherboard??. The AMD cpu is 2.2v Core and 3.3v I/O which means that I just have JV3 jumper only to set CPU voltage but what are the DIP switch settings to set the Cpu speed??

  • Presario CQ61z-300 will not boot.

    Presario CQ61 Model CQ61z-300
Is my motherboard fried? The computer was tring to power up and then powered itself off after a few seconds. I did a hard reset,  and then got a blink code (I think) of 2, BIOS Corrupt....... There is no "beep" (like when I take the memory out and get a blink code and beep code of 3).
What are my options? The price of a motherboard seems a bit steep. Is there anyway to reset the bios without booting up the computer.

Ok, the saga continueds, I needed to create a HP_TOOLS thumb drive to attempt to relash the BIOS.
Unfortunatly, HP does not supply these. I had to try and manufacture it.  Formatted a thumb drive to FAT32, volume name HP_TOOLS.
First I tried putting the BIOS,  363FF15.fd onto the root, renamed to 363F.BIN .ROM... And tred to relash using holding indows-B. Got 7 beeps and then nothing. Failed.
I then found on the internet some suggestions about the HP_TOOLS file structure. Decided to create a UEFI thumbdrive on the thumb. I then added a Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\Current directory and put the drivers there, copying to all the platfor name in platfor.ini (363F, 3652 in the downloaded BIOS. I then copied 363F.BIN, 3652.BIN (and these platforms with .ROM, *F15.fd, *HW.BIN, ,*HW.ROM into the root and the Hewlett-Packard\BIOS\Current directory, also copied the contents of the BIOS folder there (.ini ...)
Something like (This is around) Power off, battery out, power unplugged, hit power key for 5 secs, hold down windows and B plug in power, if power on and power off, hit power again, wait for beep then release windows-B.
Now, I get something different..... 4 Beeps (Flash failed). So, I think I have the right filename somewhere. This beep code is documented as either the flash did not occur, of there was a checksum error on the file.
At least I know it was trying to flash..... Still unsure if the .fd file renamed to all the other filenames worked as it should.
When my 2.5 disk enclosure comes, I will check the HP_TOOLS partition on the hard drive to see what is there and replicate on a thumb drive.
As of now, I think the BIOS chip is at fault and have to decide if I should try and replace it (some good tutorials on youtube, even without special tools).

  • Macbook Air running extremely slow - kernel_task at 300% cpu usage

I purchased my Macbook Air roughly 15 months ago and it's performance has constantly been impressive since I purchased it - until roughly a fortnight ago. I came home from work one afternoon and it was running at a snails pace. I had recently upgraded to Yosemite though I'm unsure if this had anything to do with it. I had also recently installed FitBit software to sync to my new FitBit flex.
It has continued to run in this manner constantly since the problem began. It is ridiculously slow, every single request takes a very long time to respond. Logging in takes forever. When I click on an app to open it, the icon bounces for 30 seconds or more, and it's not a smooth bounce either, it's quite a jagged bounce!
I'm hoping someone is able to provide some advice, guidance or help. The laptop is no longer covered by the 12 month Manufacturer Warranty, and I did not purchase an Apple Care plan as no Apple product I've owned before has experienced issues like this.
This whole experience is killing me! I'm suspecting hardware failure and I'm just so sad that this could happen to the laptop I've loved so much since I bought it!
    The problem:
The kernel_task process is constantly running at 300% or higher cpu usage, with Activity Monitor indicating the processor is being maxed out by a system task. Also, the laptop's fan is constantly running at full capacity - from the moment the laptop turns on, or wakes up.
What I think the problem might be:
As a result of many, many Google searches, it appears that this behaviour may be due to the Macbook Air thinking it is overheating - and I will clarify here that it certainly is not. It is cool to touch, always, when this problem occurs. (yet the fan is almost taking off!). As a result of the MacBook Air thinking it's overheating, it not only is running the fan at a very high RPM (confirmed with iStat), but it also is intentionally choking the system with 'simple requests' in attempt to cool the computer down. Apparently this is a built-in feature of OS X. The kernel has priority over user tasks, causing all user tasks to be granted a lower priority, causing the computer to run INCREDIBLY SLOW. Even as I'm typing this, I'm about two sentences ahead of what is showing on the screen!
    Steps I have taken:
    - Read widely across the internet with every possible relevant search term I can think of
    - Downloaded iStat to see if any of the temperatures are too high (they all seemed fine..)
    - Disabled Bluetooth and Wifi. (no change)
    - Reset SMC (multiple times.., no change)
    - Reset PRAM (multiple times.., no change)
    - Drained the battery completely (2 or 3 times, no change)
    - Install Windows 7 on BootCamp in attempt to bypass the issue (CPU usage was 100% constantly in Windows also)
    - Uninstalled FitBit software (no change..)
    - Uninstalled other software I did not need (no change..)
    - Attempt to boot into Safe Mode / Recovery Mode (even in this modes, the same thing is happening)
    - Repaired Disk Permissions
    - Backed up all personal data
    - Used the built-in Internet Recovery mode to format my Macintosh HD and re-install a fresh copy of OS X (Mountain Lion). (no change…)
    - Re-upgrade to Yosemite (no change..)
I've downloaded EtreCheck and here is the output:
    Problem description:
OS X is running incredibly slow. kernel_task process is constantly using 300% and upward CPU usage.

      Dec 20, 2014, 02:15:38 PM Self test - passed

    Hi,
I have an update so I thought I would share in case any other users are experiencing a similar problem.
I made an appointment with the Genius Bar at the Apple Store.
I went in and they ran a thorough diagnostic check on my Macbook Air and determined that the sensors were indeed faulty - several were providing no information "No reading" instead of providing a temperature. Thus, the Air was unaware of the temperature across multiple components.
Despite the laptop being outside the 12 Month Manufacturer Warranty, the Apple Store determined that it was covered under warranty through Australian Consumer Law - the laptop is now in for a complete repair under warranty at no cost to myself.
    I couldn't be happier.

  • Distnoted process consumes +300% cpu on my macbook pro (early 2011) using Yosemite

My fans keep ramping up on my macbook pro. I looked at processes using activity monitor, and noted that a process called distnoted was consuming +300% of the cpu. I've only been getting this problem on Yosemite, and didn't see any of this with the older OS X products. Is this something others are seeing, and more importantly whats the fix. Just searching around looks like this is a messaging function in kernal?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    MacBook Air 13-inch, Early 2014, ПО  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
The system seems overloaded, big delays on keyboard typing. Activity Monitor shows kernel_task consume 300-400% of CPU, but otherwise system does not look as overloaded - laptop is not hot
    and fan silent.
Also there is problems with system wakeup. It is impossible to wakeup system after closing the lid for more then 20 seconds, it turns off.
I think you have to add battery info.

In safe mode the problem does not go away. Actual overheating the computer does not have, it is cold. The problem is with the power on and without. All programs are not included in the basic package, I removed. I also tried to reinstall the OS with the protection of personal data. The problem exist. The problem may be due to high humidity? I live in Sri Lanka. And there is a problem with sleep mode.
"Also there is problems with system wakeup. It is impossible to wakeup system after closing the lid for more then 20 seconds, it turns off."

  • IMovie using 200-300% CPU when editing video. Why?

  • Compaq CQ60-111EM CPU

    Hi All,
I have the Compaq CQ60-111EM and I am extremely happy with it apart from the CPU. The Celeron 575 is just too slow. Is it possible to upgrade this CPU? I notice it is a PPGA 478 socket and there are dual core processors available with this socket but I am not sure if the motherboard / bios etc will support a processor of this speed. I have tried to find the motherboard specifications but too no avail.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The Celeron 575 is used in the Acer 5330-2339 that I recently acquired.  It is a Socket P / micro FCPGA ( see http://processorfinder.intel.com/Details.aspx?sSpec=slb6m for specifications).
    After researching, a Pentium T3400 ( http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLB3P ) seemed to offer a good upgrade path ( dual core 2.16GHz ).
The T3400 is typically available on eBay for less than $40 including shipping; the T3200 at 2.00GHz is also another dual core alternative.
Having just made this upgrade, it seems to have boosted the CPU experience index by over 30%.
What I did not do was check the temperatures before the upgrade.  If anyone could run the Hardware Monitor from CPUID ( http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php ) on the Celeron 575 and report the results, it would be appreciated.
The post-upgrade temperature being reported is about 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Also, the CPUID CPU-Z system utility ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php ) offers much information about your motherboard, memory, and graphics hardware.

  • ITunes converting videos at only around 300% CPU?

    Hello all,
I'm converting a ton of videos in iTunes so that I can watch them on my iPod and it's taking forever (1 video every 45 mins or so). I have an iMac quad-core i7 @ 2.8 GHz and it's only using 300% (out of a possible 800) to do the conversion. Does anybody happen to know why there is this limitation in iTunes? Is there a way to have it use 800% (or max possible) instead?

How do you know the CPU stopped working? It is much, much more likely to be the motherboard.
