Zen 2.0 - Inventory & New Compaq Deskpros
I got Zen 2.0. We recently got a batch of Compaq Deskpro EN's in and I
am
finding that inventory is not working. The last batch of Compaq
Deskpro EN's
we got 4 years ago didnt have problems. Are there any TID's that might
yield
some information regarding this? Just to give you a little more info,
all
the fields
show up, but only a couple actually contain workstation data. The
others
are blank.
In addition, when it does inventory a workstation, it hogs all
available
resources. This
is turns forces the end user to Ctrl + Alt + Del it.I loaded the Compaq DMI and attempted to scan the workstation. I
checked the
contents of Zeninv.log. Towards the bottom all it mentions was
Zeninv.nlm
was loaded. Nothing else. It tied up the system almost immediately so
I end
tasked it after a half minute.

Solaris 8 4/01 Install Problem on Compaq Deskpro
Howdy,
I am trying to install Solaris 8 4/01 on a Compaq Deskpro 6000 but I am having a problem at the reboot phase. The instructions indicate that I need to eject the Install CD after the system resets and before the memory test/HW detection phase. My question is, how do I know when this occurs...there is no screen output to tell me when this is happening. Also, The system seems to hang on reboot on a Compaq Logo screen with the hourglass just sitting there doing nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
DennisDennis,
The installation program should tell you when it is going to restart the system. You will be asked to 'press any key/enter to continue."
Immediately when your system is restarted, remove any CDs from your drives.
If your system is hanging while it is showing the Compaq logo, trying pressing the 'ESC' key so that you can see what is actually going on.
I hope this helps.

Installing Solaris 8 on a Compaq Deskpro EN
I'm having trouble just getting started. After selecting which drive to boot from (IDE), I get the error:

Help!!!!Hello,
I just wanted to point you to the Sun System Handbook page for the F280R, but to my surprise the note is lacking from the current <b>public/free</b> version !!!
This is a quote from the <b>Quick Facts</b> of a formerly public SSH
<table border="0" align="center" width="90%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td class="SmallText"><b>Quote:</b></td></tr><tr><td class="quote">
Solaris 8 1/01requires specific patch installations. See 816-1712 for details.
Solaris 8 10/01 is the minimum OS for 900MHz Cu modules.
</td></tr></table>
<b>READ ME: Important Patch Installation Required Sun Blade 1000 Sun Enterprise 280R</b> is available from docs.sun.com.
The Blade 1000 and the Sun Fire 280R use the same systemboard, but a Enterprise 280R doesn't exist.
Either get Solaris 8 7/01 or Solaris 8 10/01 (for 900Mhz Cu) or a more current version of Solaris 8.
If you have a service contract, you can notify Sun (ssh-feedback@sun.com) about this omission. It's your time and money you have spent when you got stuck ...
Michael -
I am trying to load Solaris 8 on a Compaq Deskpro 700mhz, 9gb drive. I am getting the following error "Unable to mount a Solaris root file system from the device". Everything is SCSI on my machine, but how do I mount a file system?
Thanks!Try selecting the cdrom as your boot source. Also, ensure that you've got free disk space available on your hd. If I do both of these, I've been able to install Solaris on my Deskpro EN.

Error while Trying to Burn a CD
PLEASE HELP!! I have been trying to burn CD's from iTunes and it burns half of the songs, gives me an 4251 unknown error code, and aborts the burn. I have followed all of the suggestions on the help page (updating drivers, turning off the screensaver, running a CD diagnostics test, etc)and it still does not work. On the first CD, the songs that were burned worked, but it left off the last 3 songs. The second CD I tried to burn only worked for the first 5 of 14 songs and when I played the CD, it was full of static. I ran a diagnostic test. I would appreciate anyone's help. This is all so frustrating. My iPod Shuffle no longer will hold a charge and I am trying to get all of my songs on a CD. My concern is that I bought most of the songs from iTunes and there is a limit of 7 burns per song. I am not sure if they are counting these "attempts" as burns.?.?.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.
Check the Windows Update website to verify that you have the latest service packs and patches for your OS. Service packs affect the performance of USB and firewire CD / DVD drives.

How do I convert "PROTECTED" MPeg4 Files to MP3?
Hello,
I've reviewed the replies regarding converting Mpeg4 files to MP3. I downloaded 65 songs from the itunes store all of which are in the Mpeg4 format. After reading the responses to previous enquiries on this subject I followed this procedure:
Go to Edit/Preferences/Importing tab/Import Using, select MP3 Encoder/OK
This all went smmothly, but when selecting all the files I wanted to convert to MP3 a message displayed stating this could not be done due to the files being "Protected".
Therefore, can anyone please tell me is there a way around this? I have a Digital MP3 IItronics player 256m. Or have apple protected these song files so they can only be used with ipods?
Any feed-back at all would be very much appreciated.
I need my music to jog in the gym and my CD player just isnt doing it for me anymore LOL
Thank you,
Sara
Compaq - Deskpro EN Windows 2000Hi Sara, welcome to Apple Discussions!
By the book, permitted uses for purchases songs include playback in iTunes, playback on an iPod, and burning them to an audio CD.
Of course, once you have an audio CD you can, well, treat it just like any other audio CD... -

Flash Player 11,3,31,222 for Google Chrome 21.0.1180.60 is lagging a lot, especially on full screen. Already tried unlimited storage and disabling hardware acceleration. Apparently, It started happening after this last update, and only happens in Chrome.
I couldn't find the attach option, so here's my whole dxdiag:

I installed 11.4 a few days ago and still have protected mode disabled, but I didn't notice this change until Tuesday evening. The only thing different about my computer Tuesday is that I had disabled Java. (I received an email tip from Kim Komando saying Java has security flaws and should be disabled until they can be patched.) Could there be a conflict between Flash and Java, with Java causing Flash to be slightly slower? This isn't a real "problem" for me, as I thought both games were working fine prior to disabling Java; but I did notice they were even faster the last couple of days.

Get USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned error message
Hi All, my first post. iPod was working fine and been synching without issue for 2 years. I have recently had a couple of intermittent problems where it gets stuck playing and will not respond to clicking on wheel. However, seemed to be over that but now get USB error when I plug it into PC. ie PC is not recognising the hardware. Have done 4 of the 5 R's (does not register in iTunes so cannot restore). Have read other articles with interest but not seem anything quite the same.
I have been into Device Manager via the USB troubleshooter and tried to force it to load drivers from the installation CD but thinks it does not need any. Feels like I have plugged a potato into the USB socket rather than an IPOD. Got a suspicion that the iPod itself is corrupt and not being recognised by Windows.
Got same result on another PC with iTunes installed.
Any ideas ?
Compaq Deskpro Windows XP iPod 40Gb
Compaq Deskpro Windows XP ProYep - same error messages - looks like it can't find drivers but when I try and get it to search for them on installation disk it says it can't find anything more appropriate than current settings (which btw says does not need any drivers !).
Great so a few of us have the same issue. Does anyone have an answer ? Is there anyway of getting these questions to Apple or did they cut their support costs by replacing tech support with discussion groups.
Compaq Deskpro Windows XP -
Printing Blocks and Bands of Color
Two PC's (2000 & XP), an Officejet 7310 and a TV are connected to a wired ethernet router. Both PC's have been configured to use this printer as their default. It's the only printer connected right now.
This printer had no software disk when I found it. I got the latest drivers from the HP website in the form of "exe" files. The full featured driver failed to install properly on both PCs. I uninstalled that and installed the basic driver on the XP machine first, then on the 2000 PC. On the XP PC the installer failed to create a printer, and as I remember, never asked me any information about drivers or ports to use. I had to use the Add Printer Wizard to create a printer for it on the XP PC. The installer failed to create a printer on the 2000 PC also. The Add Printer Wizard could not find the printer until I marked the printer "shared" on the XP PC. Is that normal?
NOTE: When I tried to install the "full featured" driver software on the 2000 PC there was a warning that my hardware was below the minimum "recommended" level, but according to the HP website, I am well above the "recommended" level. (It is Compaq Deskpro, PentiumIII, 375MB RAM, 2GB free space) No such warning appeared when I installed the "Basic" driver software.
When I attempt to check ink levels with the HP Toolbox on both PC's I get the following error:
"The computer is unable to establish two-way communication with the device."
I uninstalled the printer on the Win2000 PC so that I could record my steps exactly, and I also marked it "Do not share" on the XP PC because this should work (on the 2000 PC) with the XP PC shut down.
Please verify I did this properly: Here's how I recreated the printer in Windows 2000:
Started "Add Printer Wizard" => Next => select "Network Printer" + Next => Next (to browse for a printer) => (none were found) Back => select "Connect to a printer on the Internet or on your Intranet" + enter URL "192.168.0.101" + Next => "Error: could not connect to the printer" + OK => Back => select "Local Printer" + Next => select "Create new port" + "Type: Local port" + Next => Enter port name: "Local TCP" + OK => Manufacturers: "HP" + Printers: "HP Officejet" + Next => (keep existing driver) Next => Printer name: "HP Officejet 7310 on Local TCPIP" + select "Yes" (default) + Next => (do not share) Next => (Yes - print test page) Next => Finish.
No test page is printed.
Then I opened the Properties for the new printer => select "Ports" tab => Add Port... => select "Standard TCP/IP Port" + New Port... => the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" opens => Next => enter IP address "192.168.0.101" + Port name: "Local TCPIP" + Next => (some info, eg. "Protocol: RAW, Port 9100", Adapter type: "Hewlett Packard Jet Direct" {somehow it knew this time}) Finish => Close (Printer Ports dialog) => (new port appears with box checked) Apply => (printer name appears beside new port) => select "General" tab => (features: Color: "No") select "Advanced" tab => Printing Defaults... (it's a very simplistic driver) => Advanced... => (no options to control color) Cancel => Cancel => (Driver: "HP Officejet") select "HP Officejet 7300 series" in driver drop-down list + Apply => Select "General" tab => (Features: Color: "Yes") Print Test Page => (the windows logo is printed in color, but the text below says "Color support: No") select "Advanced" tab => Printing Defaults... => (sophisticated driver appears) select "Color" tab => remove check from "Print in grayscale" + OK => select "General" tab => Print Test Page => (test page looks good, says I now have color support) OK.
But still I get color blocks and bands on some pages when printing from Word, and I think on all AutoCAD plots when plotting through the system printer (which will have to be setup again in the Plotter Manager).
I also still get the same error trying to check ink levels.
What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't the installer have created the printer with all parameters properly set?HPPSdr.exe says "Everything checks out okay with your product." The test page prints OK.
I also found the HP Hardware Diagnostic Utility 4.1, and it says "We're sorry, but the HP Officejet 7300 series is not currently supported by this utility."
The problem seems to be getting more prevalent and more extreme, sometimes printing solid black, off the edge of the page too, with some blocks of color mixed in. This is occuring from two computers (Compaq and Dell) with different operating systems (2000 and XP) and different versions of Microsoft Word (2000 and 2003).
What next? -
BACKGROUND:
I am a developer working on a Java3D application, which is to be deliverable over
the Web. Delivery as an applet seemed a natural choice, and so I spent a considerable amount of effort learning (I won't say "mastering") the process of
creating a self-signed .jar containing java3d-<some_version>.exe. I have in fact
successfully created a fully-fuctional from-scratch JPI/Java3D/myapp install. By
this I mean that Windows machine with only stock IE installed could hit my URL,
get the proper JPI installed, followed by the Java3D runtime I'd chosen, as well
as a third-party DXF loader, and finally (after much clicking of 'Yes', 'Accept',
'OK', etc.) see my app in a browser window.
That was on my old, slow, Windows2000 workstation. Now I have a shiny, new
workstation upon which my employer has graciously allowed me to run Linux. Sadly,
the re-creation of the self-signed .jar files under a new JDK has not gone smoothly.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
When a user attempts to download the self-signed .jar containing the auto-install
executable for the Java3D runtime, the normal security warning prompts are displayed (one for granting to install the extension, one to accept the "suspect" certificate from me alone). The plugin happily downloads the .jar file, and then
a NullPointerException is thrown, with a
stack trace like:
NPE!
at java.util.zip.ZipFile.getInputStream (unknown source)
at java.util.jar.JarFile.getInputStream (unknown source)
<something>doPrivileged<something>
etc.
I apologize for the lack of a full stack trace; I would essentially have to type it in by hand after printing it out on the remote test box; I hope that I've caught the important details above.
After this, the pure-java signed .jar is downloaded and installed, and then the applet "loads" with the predictable ClassNotFoundException for javax.media.j3d.SceneGroup.
Downloading and installing the J3D runtime by hand and then re-visiting the URL results in a fully-functional applet.
I've tried Blackdown Linux JDKs 1.4 and 1.3.1, as well as Sun's JDKs 1.3.1_07 and 1.3.1_05 for the compiling, jar'ing, and jarsigner'ing of these files, all with the same result. At each new JDK, I re-did the HTML conversion so that he appropriate
JPI version was required on the client. I did complete uninstallations of all client JPI instances (including Web Start for 1.4.1_x, as well as cleaning the registry on the client).
When this strategy worked, it was on Sun JDK 1.3.1_05 for Windows runnning on Windows2000, unknown service pack.
DESIRED BEHAVIOR:
I would like my clients to be able to go from stock Windows2K/IE (this being an intranet without any other options) to some JPI version running the J3D extension, with only the need to click 'OK', 'Accept', 'Grant This Session', etc. a bunch of times on the part of the user. I want this to happen without my having to resurrect my decrepit old Compaq Deskpro just to play the role of "build host" for my
Java3D and loader .jar files, if at all possible.
FILES:
Here's what gets merged into the "main" applet's mainfest at creation time:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Extension-List: java3d DxfLoader
java3d-Extension-Name: javax.media.j3d
java3d-Implementation-Vendor-Id: com.sun
java3d-Implementation-Version: 1.3
java3d-Specification-Title: Java 3D API Specification
java3d-Specification-Version: 1.3

DxfLoader-Extension-Name: eupla.dxfloader
DxfLoader-Implementation-Title: Eupla DXFLoader
DXFLoader-Implementation-URL: http://10.1.1.1/heartcad/lib/DxfLoader.jar
And into the manifest for the J3D .jar:
Manifest-Version: 1.0
Implementation-Version: 1.3
Specification-Version: 1.3
Extension-Installation: "java3d-1_3-windows-i586-directx-rt.exe"
Extension-Name: javax.media.j3d
Implementation-Vendor-Id: com.sun
Implementation-Vendor: Sun Microsystems, Inc
Specification-Vendor: Sun Microsystems, IncI have seen that bug, and the problem I'm having seems to be different than it. The extension installer is in the first extension .jar my applet asks for, and it
never works automatically, regardless of how many times the applet is loaded.
The second .jar, which doesn't have to run any installer, always works fine, but the first one will never work (a manual install of the Java3D runtime is required). This seems to not be the behavior described in the bug.
I will continue to search for an answer to this problem, and of course if I should find anything I'll post it here. -
I've been trying to burn CDs since getting the new iTunes 7 and after i press burn CD, it will look like it's working until it starts to burn the first song on the playlist, and it simply says "Canceling Burn Disk this may take a minute or two" and then it spits the CD out and says "unknown error 4280". Any idea what that means or how I can fix it??
Here are the diagnostics:

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.

Upgrading Berkeley DB databases
Okay, so I did a pacman -Syu this morning, and when it upgraded the package "db" I got the message that it is a major version upgrade and that I should consider running db_upgrade on Berkeley DB databases.
Well, since i am very well disciplined in the monkey-see. monkey-do school of computer operation (and really have no idea what I'm doing), I diligently began searching the forums, the wiki and even googlled the Internet to better inform myself before attempting such an upgrade.
And yes, just like anything else that one attempts to research out there in cyberspace, there's a seemingly infinite amount of information available. There's just one little problem: it's all way over my head and completely meaningless to me.
So, does anybody have any quick and easy advice?
(There's nothing exotic about my computer... it's just an old Compaq Deskpro PIII-800 with a Fluxbox desktop that I use for everyday websurfing, email, youtubes and other nonessential personal activities)Willie:
Wow. That's grist for the mill, eh?
Your post explains that you looked at the Wiki, Googled, did a search on the Forums, and then did not understand what you found. You were then told to look on the internet, check the Wiki, go to the website of the outfit that created the package, and look for information.
I did not bother to give the source for the info I found and tried to explain to you. Whether I got any of it right was not mentioned.
Shame, shame on both you and me! Aren't we a couple of jerks?
Your candid admission that you are having trouble making sense of what you found is an expression of a real problem. How is the newcomer to get to the level where he can make use of the resources suggested to him?
I posted some comments about the Arch Wiki entries on Makepkg, Creating Packages, and PKGBUILD. I suggested a number of things, including the claim that if a Wiki entry is complete, as opposed to written for people who do not need it, no one is harmed. I suggested that advanced users would simply read the text quickly.
Responses were basically of three types: first, Arch is for experienced users. Second, "you will not be spoon fed." Third, I was told to re-write Wiki entries to suit myself.
I have considered the third response seriously, but I have a life. My point was not, "I can do it better than you guys can," but, "You can do it so you help everybody."
I insist that it IS possible to write on two or three levels, such that the Expert gets what he needs, the Intermediate User learns more, and the Newcomer is able to study the text to advantage. The use of glossaries, indented paragraphs, () and [], or even colors, can make it easy for the reader to find and learn at his level. Yes, the author has to put a little thought into how to set things up, but it is not hard.
The resulting text should be demystifying, transparent, cogent, and genuinely helpful to everyone.
As long as an elite is in the driver's seat, the new arrival's prospects will be less than optimum. I'm not suggesting that he should be exempted from reading and practicing and learning; I'm suggesting that not all advice is of equal quality. Look at what you got.
I'd like to make a genuine contribution to Arch, because I consider it a wonderful distro. Maybe I could chip away at its social and informational problems, but there are only so many hours in a day. Not only that, there is too much I simply don't know.
OK, now to try to post this without getting logged out automatically a third time. Writing everything twice is getting tiresome. -
Solaris 8 4/01 Intel Instalation/Boot Problems
I am TRYING to install the Solaris 8 for Intel and i am having several problems.
I managed to solve some of them but now i am stuck.
I am running a PII with a an Adapetc 2940 and a scsi disk.
I am using interactive instalation one software cd 1.
I am creating 2 partions one X86 boot with 10 Mb and another one of solaris type with 8500 Mb.
in the second one i created a slice for root and another one for swap.
The problem is after all the instalation completes the system wont boot !
Any ideia why ?
I created a dos boot partion and it boots fine.
How can i create a boot disk ?
How can access the file system a just created to check ?
How can i rewrite the mbr ?
I am using one disk and for solaris only, am i creating the right partion schema ?
Please help.
Thanks in Advance,
Pedro OliveiraHowdy,
I am please to see someone with ethics responding to some basic questions of a solaris install problem on an intel platform. I have been working with solaris on sparc for a while, not I am trying the Intel side of the house.
I am having a similar problem as you mentioned. I have a Compaq Deskpro system with an IDE 2gb disk to install Solaris 8 4/01 on. I get all the way through the instructions to #27 on the DOC CD to the reboot of the system and the pulling out of the Installation CD. It tells me that I will need to wait for the system to reset then pull out the CD before the sytem completes its Memory test and HW detection.
I think I am removing the CD when this is being done, but the only thing I am seeing is a compaq logo and an hourglass forever....the screen seems to hang there forever.
Should I leave the installation CD in the drive longer?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Solaris 8 x86, intel 810E motherboard
hi,
does anyone know where i can find a driver for the intel 810E
motherboard (w/ built in AGP video)? this chipset is fairly
new (4-5 months), but it seems like it's going to replace all
of the midrange 440BX hardware.
all of the new midrange (US $1K-2K) compaq and dell systems use
this board, so SOMEBODY has to have a solaris x86 driver for it.
the new chipset (intel 82810) is very integrated, of course, and
the video section is evidently based around the i740 chipset.
any ideas? 'till then i'm stuck in 640x480 limbo. i'd put a HCL-
approved card in for now but for the fact that my new box (compaq
deskpro EN SFF [small form factor] 600Mhz P3) doesn't want to
disregard the built in video in favor an installed Matrox board.
thanks
jim
