COMPAQ F700 STRANGE DVD DRIVE QUESTION

Hello all--I have a F700 notebook that works great however--When i boot my computer fresh i get a white cursor blinking in the upper left side that hangs for about 2 minutes then Vista boots--What i did notice is When i go into device manager my DVD drive isnt listed--So i do a scan in device manager and bingo it finds my dvd drive and it works 100%!!! The main issue i'm having is when i boot up fresh--Thats whene vista doesnt see the dvd drive!
I just formatted my HD and reinstalled Vista fresh  loaded everything on and still same thing!
When i take the dvd drive OUT of the notebook  Then reboot--I dont get the white cursor blinking and Vista boots normal? What would cause this!!  BTW--> I have a spare DVD drive here and that too does the same thing!!! Same exact thing!!!
Strange--unless i'm missing something!! LOL   After a fresh reboot there is no dvd drive listed in device manager or anywhere else in Vista (UNLESS I DO A HARDWARE SCAN in device manager--Then bingo its up and working 100%!! LIKE NEW!
I tried to update the drivers for the DVD drive--It told me that i had the lastest drivers
I even looked in the registry for the LOW AND UP FILTERS--None of that was in there!!!
Thanks for any help!!    Have a great day!!     MARK

I have had the same problem as well.  I was able to correct it.  Here are some options:
Put a couple of different DVD's into the drive.
I know you said it doesn't show up in the Device Manager.  Go back to the Device Manger and right-click on IDE adapters and select Scan for changes.
Let me know if either of these work.

  • CD Version? (and DVD drive question)

Is there a CD version of OS X Tiger 10.4 that I can buy?
    I have a Power Mac G4 running 8.6 and I don't have a DVD drive.
If not, are there any cheaper dvd drives that I can buy that will work? Which ones are compatible? Do they have to be from Apple?

After purchasing the Tiger retail install package, Apple provides a Media Exchange Program to exchange the DVD media for CD media at any additional cost of $9.95.

The problem isn't with your burner, most likely. It's with the format you're burning to.
PCs need discs burned with an ISO-9660 filesystem (someone please correct me if I got this wrong), and you're probably burning HFS/HFS+ (Mac filesystem) discs. Please tell us what software you're using to do the burns. I believe you have to explicitly tell Toast to burn a PC-compatible disc, but I thought Disk Utility burned them by default.
Of course, it's also possible that the PCs that won't play the OSX burned DVDs because they have CD-ROM drives instead of DVD drives.
Hold off on buying an external burner until it's certain that the problem lies with the burner you have now. I seriously doubt there's anything wrong with it.

  • Quicksilver Powermac G4 DVD drive question, please help!!

Hi Guys I really hope someone can help me.
I have got a Quicksilver powermac G4 (2001) it has only an internal CD drive. I have purchased the lastest tiger series a s cds to be up to date. However, I've the got the computer mainly for recording music. I have Cubase system which requires a dvd drive. Can anyone recommend a external dvd drive I can use that is good enough for my mac and recording. I am frightened to buy an internal drive as I've no idea how to install one.
    Will be so grateful guys,

    Hi
The Pioneer DVR-110D (or newer DVR-111D) is a popular choice, works with Tiger and burns both CDs and DVDs. Here in the UK they cost around £30 and in the States around $40 I think.
The following tips may also help with installation, although most are fairly obvious:
    1. Try and use the right sized screwdriver, one that fits snugly into the screws, so you don't risk chewing up the screw heads.
    2. When you're removing the old drive from the computer, get someone to hold it as you undo the screws and disconnect the cables, so you don't risk it dropping onto the logic board.
    3. The power cable can be a tight fit, so you may need to pry it off the old drive with your finger nails or gently rock it from side to side. Don't pull directly on the cables though.
    4. The power cable and ribbon cable connectors are keyed (or shaped) so they'll only fit one way. If you're having trouble connecting them to the new drive, make sure they're the right way up.
You'll also just need to check the new drive is configured correctly. On the back there should be two rows of pins with a small jumper block. By moving the jumper block between different pairs of pins, you can configure the drive as master, slave or CS (cable select). It needs to be set to master. The drive should come with instructions or have a sticker on it indicating which pair of pins is master.
    I hope this helps.

  • IMac dvd drive question.

    Hello,
I was wondering if I could put a iMac dvd-rom from a iMac dv into my blueberry slot loading iMac? It only has a cd-rom drive and the drive is dead. Thank you.

Yes - I believe all the slot-loading iMacs (and the Power Mac G4 Cube) use compatible optical drives.

I saw in another post that 511881-001 was for dv6 series laptops, does that mean it will work on mine as well?  Can someone please confirm, or provide me with the model number that will work. Also Where would I buy this part from? Thanks in advance

  • Faulty DVD Drive? Some questions pls.

    Hi all
My dad bought an HP Compaq nx9420 Pavillion notebook a while back.  When he got it, he had problems with the DVD drive straight away.  On the first startup, when you're meant to create backup discs of the OS, the notebook stopped halfway through the backup with what seemed to be a DVD drive failure.  I don't know if there was an error message displayed at the time, it just stopped copying.
The drive has since given continuous problems.  It fails to recognise discs often, and when it does recognise them ,it makes the most awful noise when reading them (somewhere between a grinding noise and slipping belt sound).  Also, when it does play a DVD, the sound playing through the speakers is horrendous (like it's not decoding it properly and it's scrambled).
First question:  based on the info above (which isn't very much, I apologise), does it sound to you guys like the drive is toast?  I'm no IT expert, but my first impression was that the drive was faulty to start with.
The notebook was taken back to the store where it was purchased, and sent to HP, but neither made any attempt to fix the problem.  So my dad's stuck with it.
Recently I tried to find out about replacement drives so that I could fix it for the old man.  The parts salesman I spoke to wasn't particularly helpful, and only offered one particular drive from HP.
Second question:  what are my options for replacing the drive?  Are there a number of compatible drives, or am I forced to go with an HP?
Thanks for any help or advice you can offer!

I am having a similar issue with my Pavilion's dvd drive as well as on my parent's compaq presarios's dvd drive. Both drive make the grinding and belt slipping noise. Both of them fail to read dvds or cds often and require multiple ejects and retrys, but will both eventually read the disc. On my pavilion, when having trouble reading a disc and you try to mess with it under My Computer, it locks up My Computer and when i kill the process in task manager, it also kills explorer and I must reboot windows. Any ideas why these dvd drives will not work 100% of the time?

  • Boot up/Keyboard/DVD Drive Issues & Questions

I thought I'd try this before giving up completely on this iMac. It's a 20" Early 2006 iMac that will not boot past the gray screen, Apple icon and rotating circle.
Here's the challenge - this iMac also does not recognize keyboard input from an Apple keyboard but will respond to an old Dell USB keyboard.
    Questions
First the installation (retail Tiger) DVD is not recognized when I hold the Option (alt) key down while booting, only the hard drive is listed. Does this mean that the DVD drive is not functioning?
I managed to reset SMC which did nothing to get the DVD drive recognized and now the fans are spinning full speed as well as the computer not booting.
I would love to try resetting PRAM, how does one do that without a "Command" key? I should mention that I replaced the battery when I pulled the hard drive out to rescue the data on it. Would that have reset PRAM?
Is it possible to boot directly from an external USB CD/DVD drive, and thus be able to use Disk Utilities to attempt a repair or reinstall?
    Any assistance is much appreciated!
    Peace,
    Gail

Could mean the optical drive is malfunctioning or that you have a defective disc. Try cleaning the disc on both surfaces as well as checking for scratches or defects.
Both the retail Tiger disc and the original OS X Installer Disc One are in perfect condition (at least to the naked eye). Neither will boot from the drive.
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
    Some "common" error indicators:
    SNS - sensor error
    MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
    MOT - fan error
I would very much like to do this but can't get the discs to boot from the DVD drive.
In order to reset the PRAM you need to restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-P-R keys until you hear three additional chimes. See Reset PRAM and NVRAM.
I do not have a COMMAND key on the only keyboard I have on hand that works on this iMac. What would be another key combination or an equivalent for a non-Apple keyboard?
Is it possible to boot directly from an external USB CD/DVD drive, and thus be able to use Disk Utilities to attempt a repair or reinstall?
Yes, you can boot from a USB or FireWire external hard drive or optical drive.
This is the route I will probably take since apparently the optical drive is toast.
Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the assistance!
    Peace,

  • TS1989 My iMac G5 has flashing question mark folder, no hard drive, no DVD-drive, no target drive - help?

A friend has 'kindly' decided to upgrade my father in law's iMac G5 and apparently found that it ceased to work following an aborted process. I have no idea what he's done but there was a Leopard DVD in the optical drive. The iMac boots to the smiley face folder but scrolls through 2 black screens and one grey screen first. A question mark appears at first then it changes to the smiley face folder with the question mark appearing occasionally.
I cannot get the iMac to see either a hard drive or the DVD drive. No start up disc at all. I have tried starting up in target mode and the target mode sign doesn't appear on the screen nor does the hard drive show on the other mac.
Starting up holding down either 'C', 'X' or 'R' doesn't produce any results. Starting up with 'alt' pressed down produces a screen with a padlock image followed by a white slot to write a password in and a greyish button with an arrow. None of the passwords associated with the machine have got us past this screen.
I can also get a command line on screen by holding down the startup button, hearing a loud beeeeep (firmware update signal?) keep holding down and a white screen with very small text invites me either to write 'mac-boot' or 'shut-down'. Both commands require a password to be effective and so do not work.
Following startup troubleshooting advice has allowed me to identify that there is both a start up button inside and an SMU  reset button. Three of the four led's come on fine and there are no problems with the starter button on the back panel.
I'm loath to change the hard drive at this point as I'm not sure if the HD is duff or something is wrong with the hardware and that another HD would be damaged.
    Stumped.

    I'll copy what BD wrote:
Is it a USB KB or flakey Wifi?

Your suggestion of removing the PRAM Battery and all power & peripherals was great.

I think also, removing all RAM, Iif possible), then trying to start it a few times, might do it to.
Firmware password protection in Mac OS X ...

It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
    Force Removing Password Protection
    1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.
    2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

  • How to upgrade hard drive on a compaq f700

I have a compaq presario f700 with a 80gig hd and  i am try ing to upgrade to a 250 hd. I have tried several method, copying, cloning the drive, and reinstalling vista on new drive, but none work. is there a size limit for this system, has any one had sucess doing this?

    mxdxpx wrote:
This is a compaq f700 what do you know about them?
Not much but because the original hdd was an 80GB one the lappy is a bit old (I had a lappy with a 40GB as a PATA hdd). If the 250GB fits in it means a SATA hdd but only 80GB so most likely the first SATA connection. SATA II drives have more capacity than 80GB (250GB for example). HP laptops are designed for the current standard components (BIOS settings). It means that you can't simply use a component incompatible (manufactured later in old laptops) with the BIOS settings (whitelist). These are listed in the service manuals. Have a look in the manual for a compatible drive and get one. This is the best solution you can get because the hdd has been tested in a laptop from that series..

  • A quick question concerning replacing the DVD drive in a HP pavillion dv6-2057cl

I need to replace the DVD drive in this dv6 and I am wondering if there is any wiggle room when it comes to the replacement drive.  Can I use another HP disc drive with a similar model # or am I restricted to the "identical" drive?
    Some quick info follows:
    OS = Windows 7 home premieum (32bit)
The drive pulled out of the laptop:
    Super Multi DVD Rewriter
    MODEL: GT20L
    FW        : DC05
    HW       : A2
    TYPE    : AMCK702

    HP mPC PN : 461646-6C2
    S/N :
    {Removed for privacy}
    MANUFACTURED : OCTOBER 2008
I have found a replacement with the same "Model #" and same "HP mPC PN" however it was manufactured in 2009 and I do not know if the placement of the SATA connection on the rear of the drive matches up or not.
    Any help is much appreciated!!!!!!

It looks like the part number is the same. As long as the part number is the same, it is essentially the same part and should work without any issues. The only time that part may not work is if the part number is different. If any part is different from another part (firmware, hardware, etc.), it will have a different part number. As long as 461646-6C2 is the same on both, there shouldn't be any issue with replacing the drive.
