Compaq Laptop as monitor for a Mac Mini

I was wondering if it would be able to use a Compaq laptop as a monitor for a Mac Mini because I want to be able to easily switch between Mac and PC for as cheap as possible I would like to use the laptop as a monitor for the Mini.
Thanks a lot,
Alex

Richard,
Unless the Compaq has a video
i input
this is not possible. However, you can use VNC to control your mini from your Compaq. If this is an option for you depends on the intended use for your mini.

  • Can I use My Ibook G4 as a Second Monitor For My Mac Mini G4

    Hi
I wonderd if theres any way of being able to use my 14'' Ibook G4 as a second monitor for my Mac Mini G4? I already have a Samsung SyncMaster 913n. Is there any way of doing this by firewire using both monitors, if not what cables would I need?
    Thanks

There is a application called Synergy which you may find useful. It allows the keyboard, mouse and clipboard to be shared across computers, and even different operating systems. It's not strictly what you have asked for as each computer still runs it's applications (and operating system) separately, meaning you can not drag windows between the screens, but by allowing you to copy and paste between the computers, and seamlessly slide your mouse and keyboard input between them you may get the effect you desire. Oh, and it is free and open-source, so why not give it a whirl?
You will need to connect the machines with a TCP/IP network, which can be done either with an ethernet patch cable, or alternatively as you suggest, using FireWire - these two articles may assist you in setting that up: IP over FireWire in Panther and Tiger.
As a point of note, a commercial program, MaxiVista allows exactly what you are looking for under Microsoft Windows.
    Hope that helps.

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

  • Using an emac as a monitor for a mac mini

    Hi,
Sorry if the question was already asked, but a quick search in the forum brought no answer.
I have an emac (OS9) and a mac mini(OSX). I'd like to use the emac as a monitor for the mac mini. Is it possible? How? (Both are G4, although I don't think that's relevant : I don't want to use them at the same time, only to use the Emac as a "screen")
    Many thanks.

I happen to know for a fact that you can use the internal screen on an iMac G3 333, and presumably also a 266 and 233. It has a fixed horizontal frequency so it will only display the resolutions that you can choose with it's motherboard installed: 640x480@117Hz, 800x600@95Hz, and 1024x768@75Hz. With DisplayConfigX I was even able to get other resolutions, as long as I stayed within the 60kHz horizontal frequency. If try to set it to any other resolution and refresh rate it will not work, so the best way to test it is to have another screen as your main screen so that you can set the resolutions on the iMac screen from there. I imagine that the screen in the eMac does not have a fixed horizontal frequency, so if you got the pinouts, you could probably get it working. However, I made a custom video cable for a slot loading iMac G3, and I couldn't get it to work.

The James Colby system (123macmini link) seems to be the only one I could find with an color display. He went for an LCD, instead of CRT. He kept the original look of the CRT by cutting the picture tube (so the glass face stayed in place, but behind it is an LCD).
Here's the discussion where he specifies the source for the LCD display:

  • Need advice on a monitor for my mac mini

    Hi,
I am going to buy a monitor for my mac mini.
I had been using a CRT monitor with my PC.
I guess LCD monitors are the norm these days.
Can someone recommend a monitor size and other details which I must look for before buying a monitor?
My computer runs 24 hours a day. There is very little downtime.
I am not looking for something flashy. I am looking for a monitor which gets the job done.
I am not into graphical/video editing though I will be viewing a lot of photos/movies/mp4/avi movies on it.

Almost any LCD monitor that will accept a digital signal, via a dvi cable, will work. With digital, the computer doesn't have to convert the video signal to analog, so what you see is a bit crisper. Many LCD monitors will accept both analog and digital video inputs. I have a Samsung 19" 904BW LCD monitor - a basic model, not too expensive, accepts digital or analog signals (I use digital from my mini), which is a good display.
Some LCD monitors come with speakers built in, which can be a plus if desk space is at a premium.
You should go to a store to view the various LCD monitors available - see what you like, what appeals to you. Note that sometimes LCD monitors come with dead pixels, and some vendors have a minimum number of dead pixels required before they will exchange the monitor. The recommendation above to buy from someplace with a good return policy should be considered when buying an LCD monitor.

  • New 21" iMac as monitor for old Mac Mini?

At present my computer is an old PPC eMac with OS X 10.4.11. I want to buy an up-to-date 21" iMac. (I can't afford either the cost or the space for a 27" one.) But I have a mass of software and of files (a host of articles, etc., in that old warhorse, AppleWorks, for instance, and the scores of my musical compositions in an old version of Finale) which, for reasons it would be tedious to go into here, I cannot update so that they would work in the iMac.
If I buy the iMac, I want, for reasons of space, to get rid of my present eMac. But I have the offer of an old PPC Mac Mini with the same OS as my present eMac, to which I could transfer the contents of my present eMac hard disk. If I were to do that, I would want to use the new iMac as a monitor for the Mini. On the face of it, this cannot be achieved with the 21" iMac (only with the 27" iMac).
Is there any software or other adaptor-device that would permit this? I have looked at the EyeTV website, and it looks to me as if that is not what I would need. I should be grateful for any suggestions.

Help! As time rolls on, I get more and more ignorant, not more and more clued up! What is meant in this context by 'Sharing'? I thought I could completely separate the two operations:
    1. Forget all about the new iMac. Connect the eMac to the Mini and copy everything at present on the eMac to the Mini. Then abandon the eMac — put it into the garden shed or sell it; forget it ever existed. The Mini is now my computer, with all my software and files on it.
    2. Pretend that I never had an eMac. Hook up the Mini to the new iMac via an adapter and hope that everything that is and everything that happens on the Mini will show up on the iMac's screen.
Is that not right? I want to get the eMac off my desk because it takes up too much room, and I want to have an iMac there instead.
    Sorry to be so obtuse!

  • Monitor for my Mac Mini

    hi
just bought my first Mac Mini, and am considering getting an Apple monitor. I see Apple has a Thunderbolt Display and an LED Cinema Display, they cost the same, and I'm wondering which would be a better bet for the Mini.
I do have a non-Apple monitor right now that has both DVI and HDMI inputs, should I expect better display on the Apple monitors?
    suggestions and comments welcome
    thanks
    nick

If you have a new Mac mini, you have to buy the Thunderbolt Display because your computer has got Thunderbolt ports, and not the Mini DisplayPort that needs the LED Cinema Display.
If you are happy with the monitor you have now, you can use it without any problem. The Thunderbolt Display isn't the best external display, but it's a good monitor. Note that it's a glossy display, and not an anti-glare display

  • The best monitor for the mac mini?

    Hey Everyone!
I am interested in getting the Mac Mini 2012 with 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 and 4 GB of 1600MHz DDR3 memory and Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB. But I'm struggling trying to figure out what monitor will suit me best.
I'm looking for a monitor that's between 23' and 26' and I'm looking to use it by connecting the HDMI into my future Mac Mini and be getting 1080p with it. I'm mainly looking at a Dell or a Samsung monitor. I could really use some help and get some advice from comments on what monitor will make it run very smoothly!
    Thanks!

Most Mac users who can't afford or justify buying the Thunderbolt display go with the Dell UltraSharp monitors. Excellent quality and reliability. I have two!

  • Can iMac be used as external monitor for old Mac Mini?

I just bought a used Mac Mini PPC 1.4GHZ, 1GB Ram, 80GB HD. It will be shipped to my parents out of state but until then I need to configure it at home. Can I connect it to my iMac 20"?
In other words, is there any way to turn off the direct connect of the iMac's internal workings to the screen and have the screen used temporarily by a different computer?

Although you can "remote control" any Mac from your iMac20" through a network connection (using Screen Sharing in Leopard, or free VNC software in earlier OSX releases), you will need a real monitor to do the initial set up of the Mini - including the steps necessary to activate screen sharing.
The only iMac that had any video input ability was the original CRT Bondi blue iMac from many years ago. Your iMac has video output, but no video input.

  • Can I wipe off the OS on a IMAC and use the IMAC as a monitor for a MAC Mini

I have an IMAC that can not be upgraded from Snow Leopard because it is too old. I was wondering if there is a way to maybe wipe off the OS and use the machine as a monitor attached to a new  MAC mini so I could have mountain lion?

No; some iMac models support video in, in which case wiping the OS off won't help, but all of those can be upgraded to newer OSes. The other iMac models can only be used as a monitor through Virtual Network Computing, which requires a separate monitor to set up, and that the iMac has an OS installed.

  • Possible to use iMac 27" as monitor for PPC Mac Mini (DVI)?

This question appeared on the support community, about 4 years ago, but the adapter mentioned as a solution is now discontinued.

I have an old PPC-based Mac Mini that I would like to connect to my new iMac 27", but my Mac Mini has DVI output and the iMac 27" has Mini DisplayPort input. Is this the only way to connect a PPC Mac Mini (or any DVI device) to the iMac 27"?

Sorry, no the MM is simply too old. Please read Apple's FAQ on Target Display Mode and you will see:
