Hard drive went bad, so i rplaced with a new one. I had i windows image backup, but the wizard couldn't find the hard drive. I ordered recovery disks from HP poped the first of two in, but the machine doesn't recognize the recovery disk as a bootable disk. • Compaq presario CQ57, -339WM Notebook PC, i was referred to techcenterstarup, crash after rebooting

My compaq presari CQ57-339WM, windows 7 home premium.  I had and initial crash, 'could not find boot file' and was referred to techcenterstartup.  i check out some of the tips handed to other users and had gotten it restarted.  i had made a startup disc from my desktop which was windows 7 64bit.  i think this eventually helped, but after restarting and running memory and diagnostic checks numerous times it started up and went down several times.  The last time i got it started and booted i removed several folders of information to a flash drive.  I was able to make a startup disc from the laptop, then proceeded to update and run norton 360 so i could get the antiviral protection.  It ran for some time then froze. i eventually shut the laptop down but now it  won't startup again not even using the disc.  it is saying " no partition." I don't have a backup of this laptop.

    Hello 1eye,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your notebook does not start up, saying there is not partition.
Given the information you have provided this all could stem from the Boot MGR being corrupted. I see you've made startup discs but have you run a system restore, system recovery, or startup repair?
You may still be able to access the HP Recovery Manager by repeatedly tapping the F11 key while the notebook turns on, which gives you access to these three tools.
If Boot MGR is missing or corrupted the easiest way to get it back is reinstalling the Windows operating system. The recovery media and recovery drive will not do this, you will need a copy of the Windows DVD or an ISO image you can download and burn to a DVD. Be careful not to format the recovery drive when reinstalling so you can run the recovery after to restore your pre-installed software, and that this will return the notebook to its original factory condition.
    Hopefully this helps!

    Hey @rajpodn ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're looking for info on swapping out the CPU in your notebook.
You will find everything you need here: Compaq Presario CQ56 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide. The instructions you need start on page 75. Keep in mind that the CPU itself may not be the issue, it could be the socket on the motherboard preventing the notebook from reading the CPU, so even replacing the CPU may not work, as you may need a replacement motherboard. I do not suggest replacing the motherboard as doing so requires HP Proprietary software to reinstall the Service-ID necessary for reinstalling Windows.
*Caution - If you do install the new CPU be careful with the thermal paste. A small pea sized amount should be more than enough. Put the paste in the exact center and carefully spread so there is a fine layer almost to the edge of the CPU. Remember that the heatsink will press very firmly onto the CPU and spread the paste more and you don't want any squishing out as this can cause electrical shorts if the paste has a high metal content.
The part you will want is: AMD V140 processor (2.3 GHz, 512-MB, L2 cache, 1066 MHz, 3.2 GT/s)—singlecore 25 W. The part number for this is: 616333-001.
You can order the CPU directly from HP here: HP Part Surfer, but you may be able to find it cheaper on sites like eBay, Amazon, or Newegg.
Hopefully this covers everything you're after!

  • Compaq presario cq56 115dx will not power on blinking lights, not a disk drive problem

I own two identical Compaq Presario CQ56 115-DX, and the one I use every day stopped powering on.  Shows blinking caps lock light and orange WIFI light does not turn blue to turn on.  The fan powers on, but the screen doesn't come on at all.  I tried hard resetting several times and it didn't work.  I swapped the hard drive of the malfunctioning CQ56 to the other one that was working normally, and it works OK normally.  No hard disk corruption or problems.
Any idea how to fix this problem laptop?

  • Compaq Presario CQ56-115DX will not turn on

I have a Compaq Presario CQ-56 115DX that is almost a year old. My system first had problems crashing whenever I would watch video content, I reinstalled both Java and Flash, but that did not resolve anything.  After that my computer would keep checking my file system on C for consistency whenever I would turn it on, even after telling me that it found no problems. After that I received a message that my C file system was corrupted, I attempted to back up my files and do a system restore to the factory settings but it crashed during the process. Since then it will not turn on all the way though the battery will charge and the On button lights up, as do the WiFi key and the Caps Lock key. (The Caps lock key blinks once, which according to the HP errors signal website means that the CPU has problems.) I have tried holding down the button to reset it, I have also taken out the battery and plugged it in.
Is there anything I can do to repair this? Or is it a lost cause?

  • Compaq presario cq57-339wm

I am looking to upgrade the processor in this laptop for my mother to use. It has the 020114C00-600-G motherboard and currently has the celeron 1.5GHz processor. I have been researching on what processors i can use but the lists I have found have mainly showed socket G1 processors. From my understanding the current processor is a G2 socket processor and those will not work. My question is what processors will work since most list I have found are more than 2 years old?

Any mobile Sandy Bridge based processor will work.
You could upgrade up to a Core I7 2960XM(quad core, hyperthreading), but that is 55 watts, 20 watts higher than your current processor, and it is questionable if your heatsink could handle it.
The best 35 watt processor you can get your hands on is a I7-2640M, but it is quite expensive at $188 on ebay.
You can pick up a I7-2620M for around $130, or an I5-2430M (dual core, hyperthreading) for just $50 (probably the most price-performance).
If you're on a tight budget, you could grab a I3-2330M (just a dual core) for $30, anything less than that won't be any noticable improovement.
While you're in there, make sure to clean the vents out real good and re-apply some good thermal paste, such as arctic silver 5.

  • Compaq Presario CQ57 Laptop System Bios recovery problem

A customer of mine has a Compaq Presario CQ57 that has developed a BIOS problem.
I am unsure if it had had a BIOS update through HP Support Assistant or if it just decided to start for no reason but it now intermittently decides to recover the System BIOS at start up.
It is all very random. It may not do it for a while - working fine every time it is switched on - but then just decides to go into this recovery. Sometimes the recovery sorts it first time, sometimes it has to go through the recovery mode several times before it sorts it out. Once sorted, Windows and the laptop work fine.
I have tried to remedy it by installing BIOS updates. There are 4 available on the HP website. I have installed all four at various points - sometimes they install, sometimes they fail. Sometimes the recovery mode kicks in straight after - usually after a fail which makes sense. Other times it will work OK for many start ups and then just go back to it's old tricks.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello rmaiden,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand your Compaq Presario CQ57-212NR gives you an error after running the system recovery.
Can you tell me if this error loads within Windows or if it prevents you from starting up.
I would suggest you acquire an ISO image of Windows 7 and burn it to a DVD. Use this to install Windows and then run the recovery after. This should remedy the problem.

hey guys I'm in need of some help. After doing a system recovery my computer will no longer download any new files from the internet. from browsers to games I've tried it all. and nothing will download. it keeps coming up with a message that says that it can not find the file that im trying to use. so i was wondering what might be causing this and ho wi would fix this, if its possible to fix.

    Hi @christian12 ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your Compaq Presario CQ57 Notebook and issues with installing drivers. First, try to click the Windows icon, type services in the Search box, and then click or tap View Local Services. Scroll down to the Windows Installer. Startup type should be - Automatic, and Service Status should be - started. Restart the computer after this step and try installing again. If this is not automatic and started that is why you can not install drivers.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
Here is a link to the HP Support Assistant if you need it. Just download and run the application and it will help with the software and drivers on your system at the time of purchase.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Can I put a SATA 3 Solid State Drive in my Compaq Presario CQ57-447SI?

I would like to upgrade my Compaq Presario CQ57-447SI and replace the hard drive with a solid state drive.  I'm considering the OCZ-Vertex-4 2.5 inch SATA 3 Solid State Drive (128GB) but I'm not sure if this will be compatible with my notebook?

    Hi:
If a SATA II drive is a lot less, then probably yes.
    Notebook specs are very sketchy.
The chipset may be capable of SATA III transfer speeds, but HP may not have SATA III controllers on the motherboard.
    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/value-chipsets/mobile-chipset-hm65.html
As you can see from the specs at the link above, the chipset has 2 SATA III ports and 6 SATA II ports.
You would think that HP would hook up the primary SATA AHCI controller to one of the 2 SATA III ports, but that may not be the case.
That is the best I can do for you since I don't have your notebook and cannot confirm the speed the drive runs at.
So, if there is not much of a difference in price, I would take a gamble on the SATA III SSD.

  • Bios on compaq presario cq57 keeps recovering every time I boot

Relatively new laptop. It is a Compaq Presario CQ57 running windows 7 64 bit. Up untill recently everything was fine but about a week ago it started failing to boot and then after turning it on and off, going into the bios recovery. It goes through this (sometimes more than once) before finally giving a message saying bios recovered, error 500 (and to look here for assistance). The issue seems intermittant. Sometimes it boots fine, other times it takes several attempts with the automated recovery. I think the automatic update for the bios has run once or twice, but I didn't notice any updates immediately prior to this issue starting.
Does anyone have any answers. Thank you.

No ideas anyone? Took me about an hour to get the thing to boot today. Several attempts at turning on and off during which it wouldn't even POST, and then once it did post, the bios recovery system ran through several times before I finally got back into windows.
The exact computer model incidentally is a CQ57-364EA.
I'm trying to figure out if this is a software issue or whether there is a hardware failure somewhere. I'm figuring it's software, because when the computer does finally boot, it works normally.

  • Does Compaq Presario CQ57 support UEFI?

I have Compaq Presario CQ57-425ER and want to use Windows 8.1 on GPT Disk. I made a bootable USB Flash Drive with Rufus (selected GPT-UEFI option), but my laptop can't start from this flash drive. There's a message - no bootable device. Among drivers for my laptop i found HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Support Environment.  Here is a description: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55477.html. I found 2 interesting points in this description: Provides support for GPT drives and Provides support for UEFI System Partition installation. I tried to launch that flash with windows on other notebook and it works fine. But in my laptop I always get the message that there's no bootable media. So, is there a support of UEFI in CQ57? And if yes, what should I do?

Here's the thing GPT is for HDD that are 2tb or bigger not for USB flashdrive. If your laptop came with Windows 8 it should have UEFI bios setup.
