Compaq SmartArray 4200 controller

Hi, I tried to install Solaris 10 on a old Compaq Proliant 8500 with a Compaq SmartArray 4200 controller, but (using Solaris 8 drivers) the controller and the raid are not detected. Anyone know if is possible to install Solaris on this hardware?
Thanks in advance,
Stefano

Looks like the drivers used are not compatible... Please provide with the further details.

  • Sol x86 1/01, Cpq Array 4200 controller install

Does anyone know of a faq or how-to on installing Sol x86 1/01 onto a compaq server that uses a Smart Array controller 4200?
I have the 4200 conf'd for raid 5, with a 4g partition logical volume and the remainder as a second volume.
I have dowloaded the Compaq DU for 2nd gen. array controllers, and add that driver.
When trying to install Sol onto this box, I get "The Solaris system could not detect a primary disk. Realmode drivers are used to detect them....."
PS: The install goes fine without an array controller. But this system is going to host a MySQL database and I would like to have a hardware raid.

I did try with ttyb menu item but no use. Same issue. I agree about 1 GB but Sun documentation clearly says that 512 MB is OK for this GUI installation. Earlier I did use Solaris 2006 on that same test machine but Solaris 2007 refused the install due to what you pointed out (it needs 768 MB min installed memory). Looks like Solaris 2008 have been tweaked back to fit within 512 MB requirement (that's what the Sun's documentation says).
But why this problem is happening. I feel so sad because I've disturbed the entire disk geometry to install the 2008 version on that test machine. Maybe it's bad Christmas time to me (coz OpenSuSE 11 too has gone haywire on that test machine as X died out and hung during post install auto configuration. So silly! Only Fedora Core 9 installed smoothly apart from the existing Windows XP SP2!).

  • Compaq/HP CCISS controller and Grub/Lilo

    I have this big problem.
I have just installed Arch 64 bit on a brand new HP DL380. No problem there.
When I got to installing the boot loader, unsurprisingly I had a problem installing Grub, so used LILO instead.
This was fine until I did an update when Lilo changed its mind about what the root device was (/dev/cciss/c0d0p3) and decided it must be /dev/cciss!c0d0p3.
Needless to say there is no such partition.
After a bit of a struggle I did get Grub to replace lilo and it boots in to grub fine, the only problem is that that is as far as it gets. It does not appear to see or load the menu at /boot/grub/menu.lst, so I have to type in the options followed by boot and it boots. This is obviously not good.
Has any one got any ideas?
For example can they tell what I may be missing in the grub setup?
    Kind regards
    Benedict White

I just reinstalled the machine via FTP, and what I found was that when I tried to install grub, a very quick error popped up saying that there was a divide by zero error and mentioning the CCISS controller. Anyone any ideas where I can look at the script responsible?

  • Solaris 8 install: Compaq Smart Array 431 Controller

How do I get Solaris to recognize the Smart Array 431 controller? It can't find any suitable disks under installation.

I was also wondering why this support was removed since it was in 2.5.1, 2.6, and 2.7? I wish to upgrade my servers to 2.8 however no support for the Array controller. I looked around and Microsoft NT/2000 looks like the only NOS that still contains support for the Compaq Array Smart Controller (EISA). Is it because Microsoft is a Monopoly, or people buy it because they still support legacy hardware/software?

  • Installing Solaris 9  on  1850r w/SmartArray 221

I am in the midst of attempting to install Solaris 9 x-86 on a Compaq Proliant 1850r with a SmartArray 221 RAID controller. As Compaq has not released any drivers for Solaris 9 for intel, I was forced to try to use the Solaris 8 SmartArray driver for the 221 controller. The install program accepts the Solaris 8 221 driver during the first part of the install. It finds the array, and begins copying files to it. However at the end of the GUI portion of the install, after it has successfully written to the drives, the setup program opens a window prompting me to re- insert the driver diskette. When I put in the disk containing the smartii driver which setup recognized, and successfully used to write to the disks earlier in the install, I get a message informing me that the smartii driver is not located on the disk. I have repeated the procees, re-downloaded the driver disk, also tried with the solaris 7 x-86 driver all with the same result. Has anyone found a way to make this work? Please post any solutions to this issue. Thanks

I had exactly the same problem trying to install Solaris 9 x86 onto a Compaq ML530 with a SmartArray 431 controller.
The problem is that Compaq haven't updated the drivers for Solaris 9. So, for the driver to work on the Solaris 9 install you will have to make some changes to the DU diskette.
The reason that the installer cannot find the driver on the diskette the second tome around, is that it is looking for the 2.9 version of the driver and not the 2.8 version of the driver that is on the diskette.
What you have to do is to rename the a: \DU\sol_28 directory on the diskette, to a:\DU\sol_29
Next you have to edit the a:\DU\release.def file and change the number 28 in that file to the number 29
Having done these two things, the installer should now accept the Driver on the diskette and you should be able to complete the installation successfully.

  • Problems installing Sol 10 x86 on Compaq Harware

Please Help! I am a newbie to Solaris and I am trying to understand some of these postings in this thread. I am trying to install Sol 10 on a Compaq DL360 with dual proc 1.26 MHZ and 3 GB RAM. It has an imbeded 5i array controller with two 36 GB drives attached set up as RAID 0.
I have downloaded the Sol 8 UTI disk for the controller and seem to be able to successfully add the driver for installation. Note: I renamed the directory from Sol_28 to Sol_210 as instructed earlier in this thread. I get a warning message after loading the driver that says :
Solaris could not detect a primary disk.....
However, the system has detected a disk controller without a driver, and assumes that the following disk maps to the primary disk:
    /pic@0,0/pcie11,4040@1/cmdk@0,0:a
Choose continue to confirm the Solaris bootpath of the primary disk.
    I press F2 to continue.
I continue with setup and choose Interactive text console. It boots the kernel then I get some memory resource overlap warnings but setup continues. Then I get two warnings that read...
Warning: /pci@0,0 /pcie11,4040@1/sd@0,0 (sd1): Request Sense couldn't get sense data
    and
    Warning:/pci@0,0/pcie11,4040@1/sd@0,0 (sd1): Sychronize cache command failed (5)
    Setup continues...
I choose language as English and get same two warnings again. Setup continues. I enter network config info, and set root password then continue. Then installation starts and I get this error...
One or more disks are found, but one of the following problems exist:
    Hardware Failure
Unformatted diskThen I push f2_ok and I get kicked out to shell.
What am I missing? Did I miss something? I tried this on another machine, a Compaq Proliant 800 with a 4200 controller with same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

FYI: I tried yet another version of solaris as i found out that theres a bug in the 64-bit kernel on update 4 for alot of new processors. Solaris 10 x86 update 7 did the trick! :). Installed right away on a standard 'Solaris 10 (64 bit)' VM. I still find it strange that the most recent version of solaris 10 fails to even start the installation.

  • System keeps rebooting

I'm trying to install Solaris 8 for the Intel platform on a Compaq ML570. There are two 431 SmartArray controllers attached to 2 mirrored sets in addition to the Compaq Integrated Array Controller. For my installation I'm booting from the DCA floppy, pressing F4 and adding the Compaq DU for the controllers, and continuning with the installation from from 1 of 2 CD. There not error messages during the installation. Only an warning messages comes up at the end saying that I would need to change the boot device. Finallay, at the very end of the installation it ask me for the Compaq floppy again and then reboots. When Solaris comes up it shows me an x86boot and Solaris partitions. I select the X86boot, at boot or interactive enter b kadb -v, then the system starts loading but it stops with "panic stopped at int20+xb: ret and then reboots. It keeps on doing that constantly. I have already tried a couple of reinstallations to no avail. Any idea what it may be causing this problem.

    Francis,
This sounds like the problems that have been reported
    with the driver
you got from Compaq. I would suggest contacting Sun's
    waranty support
line at 800 USA-4SUN to verify, but it's my
    understanding that a new
driver (or patch) is in the works.
I would suggest as a workaround, don't boot with kadb
    enabled.
Hope this helps. Thanks your help. Booting without kadb produces the same results. The systems starts booting up, it produces the messages I mentioned before, and then reboots again.

  • Solaris 10 x86 installation problem on ProLiant DL380..

I'm trying to put Sol10 b72 on a dual-proc ProLiant DL380 here, with the Compaq 5i array controller.
I have the Solaris 9 drivers from HP; they seem to work just fine for the installation.
The problem comes at the end of the first disc.
    Sidebar:
For one thing (and this drove me NUTS until I got lucky and caught it during a reboot), at the end of the install, on the console, it asks for the driver diskettes..again.
The problem is, it doesn't say this ANYWHERE else, only on the console..and if you're doing the installation in the X desktop, you just never know it. It doesn't write this to the xconsole window. I tried installing a good 5-6 times before, instead of hitting the power button out of frustration after the install just hung again, I actually opened up a terminal and typed 'reboot'..and caught the "Please insert the diskette and press Enter" as it killed X. If anyone at Sun is reading this..you may want to fix this, before someone gets very frustrated that their installations never seem to finish...
    End Sidebar.
So...I'm doing the console text install (otherwise you'll never see the message to insert the driver diskettes for the Broadcom NIC and the Compaq array), and sure enough, at the end of the install, it asks for the diskette. I pop in the diskette it's specifically asking for (the Compaq array diskette in this instance), and hit enter. It chugs for a second and then says it can't find the driver on the diskette.
Which is incorrect, because if it haden't found it on the diskette during the device configuration assistant phase during bootup, it wouldn't have even been able to install Solaris.
So..what's up? Anyone have any ideas why Solaris finds it one time but can't find it later? Is this a bug or problem in the installation script?
    Thanks,
    Greg

problem 1 is that it's looking for ../../s0.. Which I
    managed to
fake out by creating the dir in the same mount
    point.
Problem 2 is that it can't find .tmp_proto, which I
    must
concur with. I can't find that on any of the b72 cd
    images.
So, the setup_install_server fails. This seems to be the problem when you try to setup an install
server on a Solaris SPARC system for Solaris x86 clients, using
the Solaris 9 or Solaris 10/Express CD media.
There's a Solaris x86 UFS filesystem on slice 0 on the CD media,
and it's supposed to be mounted on the "s0" mount point,
    otherwise setup_install_server won't work. On a Solaris x86 box,
vold mounts it automatically for you: /cdrom/cdrom0/s2 is the
mount point for the platform independant ISO9660 part of the CD
media, /cdrom/cdrom0/s0 is the UFS root filesystem.
    Problem is that Solaris SPARC:
    - does not understand Solaris x86 disk labels
    - does not allow mounting x86 UFS filesystems
    (and vice versa).
AFAIK, Solaris 9 DVD media does not have this problem. I
guess the same will be true when Solaris 10 DVD media is
available in a few months. On the DVD media there's enough
free space to include an extra copy of the files in the ISO9660
    filesystem.

  • Smartd startup service failure

We have just loaded Unbreakable Linux 4 on a new HP Proliant DL360 Server. The server has a HP Smart Array Raid controller that is recognized as a CCISS drive in Linux. From the get go, and after doing all ULN required updates, this service on start was failing, smartd , which is a disk monitoring daemon. After doing some research it look like version of smartmontools that came packaged with our version of the Unbreakable Linux 4 is version 5.33 . I checked the smartmontools Homepage (http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/) and it looks like the more recent version of this package, smartmontools v.5.37 supports this CCISS (Compaq Smart Array Controller) for Linux and was added 2006-10-09. Long story short, it looks like we may need to upgrade this package, from 5.33 to 5.37, and I was wondering if anyone has any details on obtaining this package or any other suggestions on getting this smartd service to work?

Q:Would we have a way of testing a failure without actually having a failure, just to be sure this is monitoring?
    A:you can use "smartctl" command
It is smartctl is a command line utility designed to perform SMART tasks such as printing the SMART self-test and error logs, enabling and disabling SMART automatic testing, and initiating device self-tests.For getting more information ,please run 'man smartctl'
Q: would any changes need be applied to the smartd.conf file, such as making it monitor controller CCISS ?
A: you must add option '-d cciss,N' to /etc/smartd.conf to monitor controller CCISS .The non-negative integer N (in the range from 0 to 15 inclusive) denotes which disk on the controller is monitored
    eg:
    /dev/sda -d cciss,0
Q: Failed to find rpmbuild command on RHEL5.0
A: you can check if there is rpmbuild package .
    #rpm -qa |grep rpm-build
The version on RHEL5 is rpm-build-4.4.2-37.el5

  • No disks found during installation

I have the HP Proliant ML 370 G4 server with Smart Array 6400 Controller with 3 Logical drives (RAID1) configured.
And I'm trying to install Solaris 10 on the server.
During an installation proccess (Interactive mode) after "choosing the media from which to install" during the initializing proccess the "No disks found. Check to make sure disks are cabled and powered up. Press Ok to exit" error message appeared.
Is it because of the Solaris 10 have not appropriate driver for Smart Array Controller or what?

The "smartii" driver version 2.20 that I found on HP's web site at:

    hi
i am trying to setup a trial install of cups
    i have an HP DL380G5 with 1 quadcore xenon l5420 2.5ghz with 4gb of ram and 2x 146gb HD

when i look that up in this table
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cups/8_0/english/compatibility/cupcompatibility8x.html
it should work as i have more 4gb of ram and 2x 146gb HD
but during installer i get an message saying unsupported hardware
i am just doing a dump on usb drive to see what is written on there
i had the 2x 146gb hd configured in raid 1 (it had some old windows volumes on them) but have now deleted what HP call a logical drive so they are unconfigured. should i have these ready configured in raid 1 or will the installer and hardware check take care of this
am i reading these 2 tables incorrectly or should this work?
any advice would be hugely appreciated
    best regards

If you only have one processor, it would be a 7835, not a 7845. Also, the Xeon 5140 is supposed to be 2.33GHz, not 2.5GHz as you have stated. The processor speed mismatch is probably what's throwing it off.
What isn't listed there is the RAID controller. If memory serves the MCS builds had a SmartArray P400 controller in them with battery-backed write cache . The installer will be looking for this to build the array and install the appropriate firmware on it. Is it present?

Nevermind, I figured it out. In case any other noobs (like me) need help in the future - here's what I did:
I created an ext2 formatted 1GB USB stick (single Linux partition).
         1. I downloaded the driver RPM's from HP's website (Use RHEL5 x64 i386 drivers)
         2. I copied the drivers to the USB stick (root directory)
         3. Inserted the USB stick in the server (server powered off)
         4. Booted to the OVS 2.2.1 installation CDROM
         5. The installation automatically loaded the drivers from the USB stick
I should have tried this before posting. I hang my head in shame.
