Compare Bluray and Dvd Chapters and Scrolling still text

Question 1:
Using PremierePro CS5 to set some Encore-Markers and DynamicLink to Encore to create menu:
Using the same project, the behaviour is quite different:
for Dvd : Encore-markers behave like Chapters, so I can use the player remote control to go to next chapter (even it is not defined in the menu)
               that is very handly function.
for Bluray : Encore-markes behave like Titles and not Chapters, so I cannot use the player remote control to jump to next Encore-markers
I just looking for references to understand and do the correct ajustments.
Thanks
tt
Question 2:
Using PremierePro CS5 to add a still picture and scroll it up in slow motion:
Using the same project, I understand that Bluray is far better than DVD:
for Bluray : the scrolling of the still picture is smooth (it's very pleasant with texts too)
for Dvd : the scrolling is jumpy (texts are dizzy and not readable)
Is there any fix for that (.....something like PremierePro option to smooth it out a little (result little burry) or ... something like ...deinterlacing ?)
Thanks
tt

POINT 1:
I will skip DynamicLink for circumventing some issues for sure, but it is so handy and makes me lazy to do things fast.
So far I am using DynamicLink for updating still images in menu with Photoshop and it's working fine.
Also I have tried sucessfully modifying some assets using AfterEffect. Yes, there are ressources demanding since I have a skinny 12 Gigs RAM.
POINT 2:
I have to be more specific in comparing Encore-Bluray and Encore-Dvd (I am not comparing HD with SD).
I just want to see the big picture comparison (equivalent between Encore-Bluray and Encore-Dvd) instead of "TRY-AND-SEE"
Let me explain:
1. Encore-Marker set in PremierePro-CS5 is consider as Chapter in Encore-Dvd)
2. The final DVD created: I can use the remote control to jump to next Chapter even the Chapter is not referenced anywhere in Encore-Dvd
3. Encore-Marker set in PremierePro-CS5 is consider as Title in Encore-Bluray) (the same Encore-Marker)
4. The final Bluray created: I cannot use the remote to jump because there is only one Chapters but many Titles.
When I am on the last step, of Encore-CS5-Build-Dvd or Encore-CS5-Build-Bluray, i expect to get the same result when playing the Bluray of Dvd
with the Player (Home DVD Player or Home Bluray Player and absolutely no PC )
WHAT ELSE IS DIFFERENT BETWEEN THOSE TWO FORMATS? for the same project in ENCORE-CS5
(I need that information to explain to the end users)
for now, I just try-and-see and take notes.

  • Bluray and DVD darker and more chroma than same sequence done on PC???

First, I have a HDV 1080i60 sequence done in FCP 7. I export a quicktime and create MPEG 2 Bluray files in Compressor and create a bluray disc with Encore CS4 on the Mac.
Second, my client is uses a PC based Matrox Axio edit system, and part of our procedure is for me to make him a XDCAM .mxf file, so he can import the video into his Axio without any rendering. He makes a Bluray out of his system from that file.
When we compare the two Bluray discs, mine is darker and has more chroma than his disc, plus my bluray is darker and has more chroma than my timeline output to my ntsc monitor. All the monitoring is the same, so it's not a monitor issue. I have seen some issue with Gamma, etc. I just need to correct the problem, so my client doesn't quite using me for his extra post house.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    John

What would cause the difference now?
Different platforms, different edit systems, different exports, different encoders. Who knows?
Without checking the two images by using calibrated monitors and scopes through both edit, compress and burn processes, it's hard to tell where the changes happen.
The simple solution is to decide which one you like then alter the other file so that it matches. It may take a number of passes to make the adjustments. It's either that or fully monitor the project on both your and your client's edit stations.
    Good luck,

I have a powermac/tiger OS X and want to print up CD and DVD sleeves/covers and inserts but i have looked on the web for software that would enable me to do this with my mac and operating system but can not find anything.Does anyone know of any software i could purchase to enable me to do this with my mac ?
    thanks

There are several applications that will do that. A couple that are specific are Discus, from Magic Mouse software, and DiscLabel from SmileOnMyMac. A version fo Discus comes with Toast, from Roxio, which is an application that offers advanced disk burning options. I got DiscLabel after getting a LightScribe drive, since it supports that. Both of these will label disks, as well as making covers and inserts.
Actually, any good paint application will print up the covers and inserts, but these applications will size them automatically. With less specific applications, you will need to do your own layout.

    Hi Rich ~
One place to find some is over at Version Tracker:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/tiger/
Enter " cd dvd label " into the search field on the top right area and quite a few come up. You can download them and try them out from there. They also have reviews from people who have used it and other useful info.

  • Converting my music and DVD (films and TV shows) from a hard copy to a digital (iTunes)

    Hi all,
I am currently clearing out all my stuff and much of it is old CD's and DVD's. I would much rather have it all within my iTunes so that I can download it and watch it whenever I please via iCloud using my iPad, iPhone and Apple TV, rather than loads of CD's and DVD's cluttering my house! I have subscribed to iTunes Match.
The only thing I have encountered so far is regarding some of my DVD boxsets, notably my Doctor Who series. On iTunes (on my iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch), there is a message saying 'The HD version of this will be downloaded to this device and the SD version will be available for download on your Purchased page.'. Does this mean that if I bought the HD version, I won't be able to download it via iCloud.
Hope someone can share their experiences!
Note: I am based in the UK if that information is of any use.

You can make a data DVD as back up, but you cannot make a DVD that you can play on a DVD player.
From the terms of use of the itunes store:

  • Difference between DVD+R and DVD-R and same for CD's

    Hi,
I read a post about someone asking about CD brands they use and I know Verbatim are supposed to be the best but I use Maxell and Memorex CD's and then I bought some cheap DVD's that work great (C2Tech brand).
Now it just dawned on me that the DVD-R are ones I can't write to again but the RW ones are DVD+R. I have no problems burning DVD+RW ones in my Powerbook but I'm wondering is that why I can't get them to be appendable when use disc utility?
What is the difference between the + and -? Are they + only when they are RW ones?
    S.

    Don,
Yeah that was a lot of information to weed through. So I guess the bottom line is over time it is better to go with higher quality even though now my cheap discs are working fine. Also I'm guessing they are better for the drive itself to keep it from breaking down etc.
What brand do you personally use? Is Verbatim the be all end all of disks? Do you always use DVD-R's as well?
    Thanks,
    S.

  • Poor video playback from movies and DVD in Quicktime and DVD player

    Hello.
I have just taken delivery of a smashing Intel iMac C2D 20".
I appear to be having problems playing back video and DVD. let me explain:
When entering full screen on a DVD, the picture is very blocky (pixilated). This happens on all DVD discs I have used.
The same happens if I playback a MPEG or AVI, and also when I use Eye TV to playback TV.
I have run the Apple Hardware test, and it returned no faults.
The Video Card is the ATI Radeon X1600 with 256mb
I am sure that there is a problem because I have just compared playback using my old G5 iMac and G4 Powerbook using the same media files and DVD's and they playback fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions (other than calling Tech Support at this stage as I will blow a fuse after being on the phone for 1.5 hours getting nowhere, and with agents not knowing which keypresses to initiate stuff - sorry - Rant over - I just want to get this resolved)
As a side note: I have just installed Windoze XP on a partition, and the playback of DVD and MPEGS are fine - so it leads me to think maybe its software??
Not one to let things get the better of me - I installed Real Player and VLC.
BOTH of these play back the media correctly.
So I guess it is Software for sure, and I guess its Quicktime. Does Quicktime run DVD Player as well?
I did a roll back to a previous version of Quicktime, and it screwed up the mac. It would book, but would not load the Finder.
So I archived and reinstalled, and I had 7.1.2 QT, and the problem was still there. So up again to 7.1.3 and problem still persists.
I have come to the conclusion that this is to do with Quicktime on a C2D processor iMac.
Can anyone shed any light on this or suggest a solution?
    Manythanks
    Glenn

    10.4.8 Combo update resolved issue

  • Why is my iMac no longer recognizing Memorex CD-R and DVD-R media that it burned previously?

So this has happened before to me with other computers and other drives, I've had burners refuse to recognize some brands of blank discs before, but I've never really figured out the issue or had a drive start to refuse to recognize a specific brand after a few years of previously recognizing and burning them just fine. Here's the problem:
I have an older (2007) Intel iMac with the standard superdrive they shipped with. It wasn't particularly picky in the past with accepting different brands of blank CD and DVD media, though I remember that it did refuse a couple brands but I don't remember any more what they were. It did however always accept Memorex brand CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, and I literally burned several hundred DVDs and CDs on the internal superdive. All of a sudden, today I go to pop in one of the CDs and it tries to read it for about 20-30 seconds and then spits it out, no message, just rejects it. And the same thing happens with the DVDs. It's just the Memorex brand ones, older Sony and Verbatim CDs and DVDs are still reading just fine. I tried a blank Memorex CD from the same spindle that it previously burned discs from and it does the same with the blanks, blank DVDs from the same DVD spindle as well, spits them out when running Toast or Disk Utility or iTunes and trying to burn to them.
So it apparently just decided that it doesn't like these Memorex brand discs, but they worked fine for the last 5 years. This is a pretty big problem as like I said, I have hundreds of CDs and DVDs with backed up data. They aren't dirty or scratched, they are pristine. Commercial CD's and DVD's read fine, and other brands of blanks, both already burned and blank, read fine as well. It's literally just the Memorex that this same superdive burned over the years.
In the past, I had a couple extra DVD burners laying around and some external cases and had the capability to use a different drive if my internal wasn't playing nice with a brand, but I liquidated all my extra hardware a while back and don't have any other readers or writers, internal or external, that I can hook up to see what happens, unfortunately. I'm thinking that with one of the more recent OS updates, somehow support for Memorex brand discs was tossed out so the computer won't recognize them anymore. I don't know why else it would change what brands it supported like this on me. And I'm also guessing my only solution to be able to read all my hundreds of backed up discs is to buy another DVD drive and hook it up and hope it plays nice with all my discs. But that's really frustrating and I'd love it if somehow it would just recognize all the discs it used to without having to spend any money.
And I'm hoping beyond hope that this is not a unique problem I have and others have the same issue with Memorex discs and someone figured out how to get them recognized again, but I'm not holding my breath.
Any advice or musing on this issue is much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read about my problem and hopefully to offer a solution!

Thank you very much for your response, Klaus1. Yeah, when I was searching the forums for an answer to this problem before finally posting, I gathered that Memorex blank media isn't recommended and of poor quality, unfortunately, which is of course too late to help me with my current problem, but knowing that now I'll make sure I don't continue to use them in the future. I used them for many years, as long ago when DVD burners were first available I had a very hard time with Toast successfully finishing a DVD-R on an internal Panasonic 2x burner on my G3 tower, and for some reason I had good luck with them (Memorex). And then I had a lot of them on hand and they've stood up well over time (not flaking, etc.) so I kept using them over a few Mac upgrades. It also had to do with DVD players we had being compatible and able to read them.
Anyway, I'm rambling, point being I used them for lots of various reasons, but I should have kept informed in the more recent past and learned the fact that they're a poor choice and switched, my own fault. I just don't want to look totally stupid, like as if I had chosen them originally for no reason.
I went ahead and reset the NVRAM and also reset the SMC, and I had tried my cleaner disc with little brushes earlier today for the heck of it, too, but no luck still. The drive just changed it's mind and no longer likes the Memorex discs, apparently end of story and no changing it, sigh. It still really baffles me that it had no problem with them for nearly 6 years up until a few months ago, the last time I used one. So weird.
And no, I don't have the data on the discs stored anywhere else, so it's access them or nothing. I rummaged around and found an external 5.25" firewire case, and I do have a PC (yuck) I can borrow the internal dvd drive from and toss in the case and hook up to my iMac to see if it will read the discs and let me directly re-burn them to better media. I used to be very knowledgable about hardware and Macs in general, but I admit I haven't kept up my knowledge, and I don't know whether that will work - if my iMac is spitting out the discs because the drive doesn't like them and therefore a different drive might work, or if it's spitting them out because the system doesn't like them and switching drives will do nothing for me?
If not then I'll have to resort to finding another Mac I can hijack for a long time to re-burn all these discs I need, as obviously a machine with one drive is going to take a long time - putting in a disc, copying it to a local drive, ejecting it, putting in a new blank, and re-burning the data about 250 times. And a lot of baby sitting the machine as I don't have a robot to keep doing it for me. Sigh.
Thank you again for your advice, I greatly appreciate it even though I still struck out.

  • Project finalization and DVD making questions

Thanks for the earlier help with managing audio tracks - the pen tool is awesome!
My 30 minute project is complete - now I have a couple finalization questions. I included various audio tracks which I assume need to be normalized/ optimized so that the levels are consistent throughout. Can anyone help me out with that task?
Also, I've read the user manual on making DVD chapter markers but there doesn't really seem to be a step by step guide. Can you help me create DVD chapters and a title page, then these almost 10 hours of family vacation shot 2.5 years ago will finally be made into something useful!
Any other final steps before burning to DVD?
    Thanks again,
    T

This is how to add Chapter Markers:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6035849&#6035849
A Title Page is selected in iDVD or similar app. Export your FCE Timeline as a Quicktime Movie and drop that into an iDVD theme.
The audio really needs to adjusted manually with keyframes to get the right balance, rarely are audio levels consistent.
BTW: Mixdown your audio prior to exporting.

  • Satellite Pro M70-113: Not possible to write on CD-R and DVD-R

    Hello,
I have a Toshiba satellite pro m70-113 laptop.
    Reading Problems:
I am unable to read any cd-r. This is really strange as a couple of days earlier those CD-R were reading fine on my drive.
and when i click the cd drive in my computer an error dialog shows and says F: is not accessible/incorrect function. Here is a screenshot for the error..:
    http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/9574/1bp3.jpg
And when I try to read my DVD-R, some times they read fine but sometimes it doesn't read it and the LED of the drive keeps lit when it doesn't read the dvd-r.
When it doesn't read the DVD-R, the following error comes: Screenshot here: http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/9674/2bc0.jpg
    Writing Problems:
After getting the reading problems I tried to test my drive for writing.
And i found that I am unable to write on cd-r. I used alcohol, and Nero both but no success.
Though same content when burned on cd-rw its a success.
I am able to burn successfully on DVD+RW 4x media, with data amounting to almost 4.34GB for DVD5..
When I insert a DVD-R media the drive doesnt detect it as a blank media and the LED keps on lighting constantly and so nero at this state doesnt detect my dvd drive even! So i am not able to write to my DVD-R media..
In short: only write to RWs is possible for both, cd-r and dvd+RW, and no writing possible on CD-R and DVD-R.
    Please help me.
It's only 7 months since I purchased this notebook and believe there can be no other person on this planet who takes care of the drive better than me!
Really, I have not used this drive much and never inserted scratched/degraded/local media, only moserbaer media.
    Thank

    Hi
Well, according to your description it sound like the drive cannot calibrate the lens and therefore its not possible to read or write these medias.
Usual its not possible to fix this and the drive replacement is needed.
You can also check the user manual. There you can find a list with all supported and compatible medias.
I have found also this topic in the forum:

I have a mac mini since 2009 I recently got the snow leopard from apple but when I insert it it in the drive it just makes a few noises then ejects the disc. I have tried other dvd's and cd's and it reads them ok any help appreciated

It's possible the DVD is damaged, scratched and/or dirty.  Check out KB Articles:  http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50448  How to Handle and Clean CD and DVD Discs and Troubleshooting Mac OS X installation from CD or DVD
Or you can request another DVD from Apple and/or get your $$$ back.
Your drive may need cleaning.  Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.

  • What is the best CD and DVD to use with my new iMac Intel?

Guys, please help. I am not great on the computers and need a bit of help and advice. Just brought a brand new iMac Intel G5. This is to replace my older but much loved iMac G4, which is very simple to use. Have had nothing but trouble with the new one which was especially brought to copy CD's and DVD's and to have a good play with. After much head scratching have just been told by Apple help desk that the new intels may not like CD-R. These disks worked fine on my old Mac, brought a new pack (100). I can copy information and burn to these disks using Disk Utility. BUT they can only be read on the Intel iMac, not on my old mac or PC at work. This is only simple word and pdf files, nothing complicated. Copying and burning DVD's even more of a nightmare. What makes and formats do you recommend that I use? I can copy to DVD+R. Your advise would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Townie1978

  • DVD-A and SACD?

Hi guys I have a imac intel 2.0 dual processor it is about a year old. I am wanting to know if it will play DVD-A and SACD format. The reason i ask is beacuse I would like to buy some surround speakers and be able to play 5.1 audio. Thanks in advance, Mike.

    Hi Lorna.
At home I have the following discs -
    1) *Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd* - +Hybrid SACD+ (plays on a SACD Player and an ordinary CD Player. I presume one layer is SACD, another is ordinary CD).
I placed this in my new iMac. It appeared on the Desktop as expected and booted iTunes. I was able to play the disc on my Mac. Unfortunately I have no means to determine which track, the Hi Def. SACD or the ordinary CD track was being played because I was using headphones on an iMac but I think it safe to assume it was the CD track.
    2) An SACD made by American company TELARC. Title *"Tchaikovky 1812"* and other Tchaikovsky classics such as Capriccio Italien in surround sound. Major differences in Audio Production to usual CD/SACD. However purports to be Hybrid (i.e. have a separate CD track).
On inserting into my iMac I found that the Disc did not appear on the Desktop. It triggered iTunes to open up but did not appear in any playlist. To eject the disc I had to hold down the 'mouse' button while the iMac restarted to make the iMac eject the disc.
    3) Jeff Waynes *'War of the Worlds'* 2 disc set. Again claims to play on all regular and SACDs. Exactly the same as the Telarc SACD. Didn't appear on the desktop and it opened iTunes without creating a playlist or uploading. Again I had to restart my iMac and, whilst the iMac was rebooting, hold down the mouse key to force the iMac to regurgitate my disc.
    4) Jean Michel Jarre's Aero. Came as a two disc set (a CD and a DVD) with mostly the same material except the DVD had some fancy menus, HD video *(1080i I believe) and Dolby 5.1 surround and DTS Surround systems support. I ignored the CD. The DVD played in DVD player (instead of iTunes. Great HD video of a girl's eyes but again I was unable to ascertain whether or not the sound output was anything greater than plain ordinary stereo (there was an option on the SACD menu showing this as a possibility too)
    5) Vaughan Williams - *Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis.* Hybrid SACD again. This SACD appeared on the desktop as normal and appeared (and was playable) in iTunes. No way of knowing if the output is 5.1 surround due obvious iMac and headphones limitations.
+"I am wanting to know if it will play SACD format."+
Yes, and No. Depends on the Sound Engineering it seems. I can't rule out other factors too.
+"I am wanting to know if it will play DVD-A format."+
Possibly. My Jean Michel Jarre disc called 'Aero' turned out to be an ordinary DVD like the ones you buy with a movie + DTS on. I think that it is it is a DVD-V not a DVD-A.
+"I would like to buy some surround speakers and be able to play 5.1 audio."+
Honest answer. Save up some more and buy a dedicated SACD player that does both (I have a Pioneer 656A which pays all sorts of discs including SACD and DVD-A) and a dedicated AV amplifier (with all the modern surround sound decoders) to go with the speakers. Miles better than speakers attached to your Mac. Horses for courses, and all that. Wait a bit and you might even find one that plays Blue-Ray and HD-DVD too.

  • Sigh. Chapters and artwork missing on export.

I just can't catch a break with this app. When I export my podcast - either to disk, or to iTunes - the artwork and chapters which I added are missing.
Podcast track is visible, and I'm choosing Share -> Send Podcast to iTunes, or Share -> Export Podcast to Disk.
This happened with two episodes of my podcast. I just created a new project and added one region, and two chapters, and I get the same problem, so it doesn't seem like a project corruption thing. And I trashed my GB prefs a couple days ago, so I don't see how that could be a problem.
    Why does GarageBand hate me?

I noticed this on my last export, and did some testing. Turns out that the last track/loop (a jingle) caused this. I also noticed that the album and artist info was missing, as well as the artwork.
Even though this solved my problem, I'd like to know what was happening.
I read somewhere else that this could also be caused by an initial loop/track. So what's happening, technically, with these begin/end pieces? Anyone?
