Compare Documents Tool: Highlights similar text, pink clouds, yellow triangles etc.

Hey All,
I'm trying to use Acrobat 8 3D (in the Tech. Comm. Suite)to compare two PDFs and the results are rather confusing. If anyone has any insight into this tool or can point me to any useful documentation, I would appreciate it.
The documents I am attempting to compare were created outside the Adobe product suite (in XMetaL Author I think) by another author. To begin the comparison, I open up the first document, select Advanced>Compare Documents, then select the second document in the resulting dialog. I then select "Textual differences" and "Side by Side Report" for the options.
Here are my problems with and questions about the results:
I can't find any documentation as to what the different colored comparison marks mean. Blue lines, green lines, etc.
The comparison marks don't seem to be identifying actual text changes. There are red strike-outs and blue and green underlines beneath text in one document that appears identical to the text in the other document.
What do the yellow triangles signify?
What's with the pink clouds surrounding half my document? I don't understand what it is intending to indicate.
Thanks!

  • Compare Documents tool in Acrobat Pro 9

I'm assessing the Compare Documents tool in Acrobat Pro 9 for business use, and have some very specific questions about its functionality:
When I initially load a pair of PDFs to compare, occasionally Acrobat refuses to accept them as anything but "scanned documents" even though they are fully electronic-sourced PDFs created in, usually, Adobe illustrator.  What are the specific criteria that cause Acrobat Pro to force the "scanned documents" type?  Is it related to the presence of only "flattened"/"outlined" text instead of embedded fonts?  Lack of layers?  Some other graphical feature?  How do the comparison parameters/performance change when the loaded docs are designated as scanned rather than one of the other types?
Second, when I've done a Compare on two nearly identical documents and then call up the "old and difference images" display - is there any way at all to manipulate this display?  Some of my docs are large - potentially full press-sheet size of around 24" x 40", and when the differences between them are tiny (e.g., a change in only a few Braille dots over the entire graphic) the on-screen rendering of the "difference image" side of the display is relatively tiny and practically useless, although it contains exactly the information I need to see.  Can it be grabbed/stretched/magnified/saved/printed/analyzed some other way besides how it is?  It seems to disappear literally at the first mouse-motion or key-touch, which is incredibly frustrating.  Are there any changes or improvements in this feature in version 10.x over version 9.2.0 (which is the latest version my company has approved)?
Third, also at the post-compare stage, the feature tags a small printer info block in a corner of the document with "This image was replaced" even when I know the info block has not been changed.  Why could this happen?

Sounds like you want to do this on a server, but you should know that Adobe Acrobat cannot legally be used on a server.
For server-based PDF operations you can look at Adobe LiveCycle products or our Adobe PDFLibrary (available in both Java and C++)

  • CS4 document in CS5: Text is underlayed yellow

    Hi,
when opening a CS4 document in CS5, some text is now underlayed yellow. Strangely, almost always just headings and not all words or even letters.
Can anyone tell me what this means and which settings are responsible for this?
    Thanks!

Just found the answer to my own question, and a resulting new question.
Preferences > Composition tab was a good tip.
If the "replace glyphs" box is checked AND the text uses CAPITAL LETTERS, either through a paragraph or character format or using the All Caps icon in the tool bar, the text is underlayed yellow. Sometimes all letters of all words, sometimes all letters except the first letter of a word...
Also, some combinations of letters in regular "Body" text are also underlayed yellow, e.g. letter combination "fi" or "fl" anywhere in a word. Changing the font does not make any difference.
This seems to me quite strange behavior... What is it supposed to mean? Are CAPITAL LETTERS or letters like "fi" or "fl"now glyphs? Is this "normal" CS5 behavior?

  • Can oracle text be used to compare documents?

lets say that i 've some documents stored in binary(LOB). can oracle text be used to compare documents and show their similarity on the basis of their content. how would i be able to compare documents using Oracle text. does it require mining algorithm like neural network. please help.

Thank you for your interest in my question. Let me see whether  I can further clarify it. In an ordinary PDF document, assume that I have a picture of a user interface for microsoft Word. The common method for identifying items in the picture, such as a toolbar, would be to either:
--use a callout labeled "toolbar" that points to the toolbar
    or
--use a callout labelled "A" and have a caption underneath the picture that says: A) toolbar.
What I would like to do is have text underneath the picture such as:
"The major features of the interface shown above are:
    toolbar
    main menu
    status bar
    formatting menu"
such that, when the user clicks one of the bullet items, the object becomes highlighted in the picture. The bullet list also needs to be translatable into Japanese. So, as far as I know, it can't be part of the swf file. Or can it?

  • Comparing two PDFs using Compare Documents utility in Acrobat Pro in command line

I have a need to compare two PDFs based on text, images, annotations, formatting, headers/footers, styles etcetera. The Adobe acrobat pro tool is working very good as per my requirements. I need to call it through Java program or command line. It could be something which takes the two PDFs as argument and compare options as Pro version have - text, images, annotations, formatting, headers/footers and background and generates the list of differences. It could return the differences either in a form of pdf document highlighting the differences or the map which is mapping something like page numbers to the details of differences that are appearing.
This would be very helpful. Please answer asap.

  • Comparing documents and false positives

    Hello,
I often have to send a proof of a book to a printer. The proof is a PDF. When they return a soft proof--another PDF that they will use to print--I need to quickly compare the two to make sure that there have been no changes in the text.
The Compare Documents feature certainly beats a side-by-side eyeball scan. But I often get a lot of false positives, words are flagged that actually have not changed.
It appears that my PDF, exported from InDesign has some hidden discretionary hyphens. In ID these are used to make sure a word breaks at the end of the line at the correct syllable. They are invisible when printed. In a PDF these are not necessary because the text ain't gonna reflow, right?
But when I compare the soft proof to the original PDF, words with discretionary hyphens are flagged. Somehow the printer has stripped the discretionary hyphens. That's fine but what must I do to get rid of them in my PDF?
Below is an example. The PDF shown is the one from the printer. The comment box shows the difference from the original PDF, though there is in fact no difference on the page.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Tom

I like Acrobat's text comparisons, which have saved me from bad goofs several times -- mostly stray key-strokes, but once I caught an InDesign footnote numbering snafu.  However, the false positives have always been annoying even without flagging every single discretionary hyphen.
I imagine you have tried the image method for comparisons, a modern version of the old trick of putting printouts of the old and new versions of a page on a light table to find differences.
I don't recall seeing comments of the type "undefined", but does re-sorting comments by type at least isolate these so you can step through the rest?  I'm no scripter, but can a javascript mark or eliminate comments containing hyphens?
More drastic, would it be worth trying to eliminate the discretionary hyphens?  For instance, you could apply Harb's "Freeze Composition" in InDesign, and then search-and-replace all discretionary hyphens.  (Read the comments on the In-Tools site, as well as those in the InDesignSecrets blog it links to because you might want to modify the way it handles hyphens.)
    Good luck!

  • Printing changes from a compared document

I have a compared document which on the screen shows the differences in different colors and highlights. But when I print the document the colors do not show up. Is there a setting that allows for printing the changes in color?

Using Pages ’09 v4.1, I can only duplicate your export results if I choose to ignore that the Pages numbering default is to continue from previous — thus your source would need to show a 1 - 4 number series before export. You can rectify this, by positioning the pointer at the 3 list item, and choosing Start at 1, as shown below. When used in this manner, what you see, is what you get in the resultant Word .doc document.
The other approach is to just type “Old Business” followed by a return. Then, without using the List tab from the Text Inspector, simply type your own numbered items and content followed by a hard return. Now, you control the numbering yourself. In kind, “New Business” would follow, again with purposely typed number sequence. That exports to Word .doc nicely too. Doesn't matter whether you have Automatically Detect Lists enabled in Pages preferences or not.

  • Find tool highlight color glitch

I noticed that when I use the Find Tool in Pages 09 (newest version), it will find the desired word but it won't highlight the text in yellow in certain documents.  In some of documents it works fine and highlights them in yellow when it finds them, but others it does not.  It highlights them in white, which makes them impossible to see on the page.  Sometimes I can see a small little piece of the yellow box wanting to show up, but it is barely there.
This is obviously a glitch that it is driving me nuts!

That is not Pages 09 it is Pages 5 and yes there are bugs.

  • Highlighting existing text

After converting  a document to PDF, how do you highlight existing text in the document?  Found the "highlight text" button under the "comment" section, just can't figure out how it works.  Thank You.

Thank you again Pat.  I have the feeling I am not running the same version.  What I got from the first link looks completely different than what the second link pulled up. I mean , it was the same words but it was two different formats. The text in the first and second  links said, “Adobe Reader XI Help and Tutorials”but the first was just the text on the screen not contained in any window., or box, whereas the second link said the same thing, but was in a window in the middle of the screen.  There were option buttons or tabs present in the second at the top of the box or window, running horizontally along the top edge.  The second had no tabs, or options, just a zoom.  I am happy to send a document. Do you want me to convert it to Pdf first?  These are just what they call Gedcom files  for a genealogy project I am working on.  They are just basic source citations for events such as birth, marriage , deaths, burials, stuff like that.  They are specific to ancestors of mine, however some have ben deceased for300 years so I am quite sure they would not mind. lol There is nothing sensitive about them in the least. So how do I send and do I convert first? Do you want more than one? Perhaps from different types like jpeg, rtf, odt? I see a set of instructions below for imbedding an image which is sent to the forum.  Want me to do that?
Remember, converting the files does enable me to interact wit the text, to change it, delete it. erase and replace text.  It lets me perform basic word type functions, just not tools.  There are other forms that I work with, however, where I can use some tools, basically the insert text function, in order to fill out forms.  I don’t do anything real complex. I’ll await yourm response.  Thanks,
    Rob

  • Eyedropper tool not copying text attributes

    Hello,
I am editing long documents for work. I have applied paragraph and character styles to all of my copy. I'd like to use the eyedropper tool to apply these said styles, but everytime I go to copy a text attribute the eyedropper appears "Full" as if it has copied the desired attributes. However, when I go to apply the attributes to other text, nothing happens. I am still in the trial version of the CS5 Suite on a PC running XP. Anybody out there know what's going on?
    thanks

    1. Highlight the text you want to change with the text tool.
    2. Select the eyedropper tool.
    3. Use the eyedropper to click on the format you want the text to be.
    Alternatively:
    1. Select the eyedropper tool.
    2. Click on the text with the format you want.
    3. Use the eyedropper to highlight the text you want changed.
I think you were expecting the first click of the eyedropper to select the text and the second to select the formatting. It's actually the opposite: First click selects the format, second click selects the text to be changed.
