Compare iMovie08 Video Capture/Categorizing to FootTrack and iDive

Can anyone compare the iMovie08 video capture and categorizing capabilities to FootTrack and iDive?

Hi,
I am the German translator of FootTrack and thought I'd jump in here with an example of things FootTrack can do, the way I use the program, anyway. I shoot a lot of documentary footage, some of which is of a stock variety, i.e. I shoot on spec and might not use the footage for a few years. FootTrack lets me capture the footage and compresses it to a smaller size that I can keep on my internal drive after I have deleted the original DV footage. That means I can tag, organise and scan compressed versions of my clips without having to have access to the original tape. When I have decided which clips I need for a project, I can export a FCP XML file to use as the base for a batch capture, because FootTrack captures timecode as part of its metadata (although it doesn't capture this for HDV at the moment, I believe FootTrack HD is in development). This saves a lot of time. iMovie on the other hand only knows the footage you have on your machine, which in my case is only the current project footage, so the organisation that it does the iPhoto way is not much use to me for older footage.
I think of FootTrack as a pro video editor's organisational tool that gives me access to all of my footage without having to store huge amounts of DV data on external drives, or having to index my tapes with detailed info. I don't edit with it, preferring to edit with a video editing program. Those tasks are quite separate.
I hope this helps. If you are trying to decide whether FootTrack is for you, try asking questions at the FootTrack yahoo group or contact Todd, the developer. He is a great dude, as mentioned before.

Fiver

  • Video capture with Canon HF10 and Vista 64

    I cannot get Premier Elements 7 to capture videos from my Canon HF 10 camera.
    I am using Window Vista 64, Premier Elements 7 that I just installed, and a Canon Vixia HF 10 video camera.
    The computer will identify the camera. I can import video using the Pixela ImageMixer software that came with the camera. And, I can capture the video into Premier Elements 7 once I have the video clip as a file on the computer.
    Obviously, I would prefer to just directly capture the video with Premier Elements 7.
    Does anyone have a suggestion how to resolve the problem?

    Ted,
    Welcome to the forum.
    Now, I could not find your camera on the CanonUSA site. Is it a UK/European model? Looking at the US models with similar #'s, it appears that the only connection offered is USB 2.0. Is that correct?
    If so, there will be one major problem. With a rare exception, PrE will only Capture via FireWire. If this camera does not have FireWire, then one must use other means to get the files onto the computer, and then into PrE. That is why it has been recommended that one use the included software to transfer the image files. This is an unfortunate fact of life. As the USB 2.0 connection is horribly slow, even on the fastest of computers, there will be the problem of how long this will take.
    The decision to not include FW was one made my Canon. Many manufacturers are making the same decision, as it keeps costs down on their consumer cameras. It does not help the user, however, if they really wish to edit the footage. What would be a one-step process with a miniDV tape camera w/ FW is now at least a two-step process and a slow one at that.
    There is likely not going to be any cure from Adobe's end, unless they rework the Capture module, or add a second USB one, and that will not be until PrE 8, if even then. [This is my prediction and not from any knowledge of Adobe's plans.]
    Good luck,

  • VIDEO: capturing w/ firewire 400 and USB 2 on Final Cut

    I didn't think of it at the time because it didn't make sense then and it doesn't still. I exchanged a PowerBook G4 for a new MBP and realized, too late, that it had one less firewire port. ARG.
    I've heard 1) that USB 2 is just as good as firewire, 2) that its as good only if you're using a PC-based machine, and 3) that it should be avoided altogether when it comes to editing video.
    Can I absolutly positively use firewire from my camera to capture video onto my USB 2 external HD without dropped frames or studdered video?
    AND
    If my HD is FAT formatted for my old Dell notebook, would that have an effect on the write speed when I use it with a Mac?
    Also, it seems like a bad idea, but can I daisy-chain my camera and my external HD??

    do not use usb for capturing video. the max data rate is about the same as firewire 400, but it doesn't offer as high of a continued transfer rate. in short, you'll lose some frames.
    the cool thing about a firewire 400 port, though, is that you can daisy chain up to 8 firewire devices to that one port and not have to worry about it. i usually have about 3 or 4 external drives hooked up to each other and my firewire, and i just plug my camera into the firewire port on one of the hard drives. it works just as well as if i had plugged it into my computer.
    there's really no need for an extra firewire port or firewire 800 unless you're doing a really involved, highly detailed project, like a feature film, that would require higher data rates and more storage space.

    I'm doing FMLE eSTREAM  with 3.0 and I need a capture card. I have a doubt  about osprey cards 100 and 210. Tell me  to  summarize I  can be used osprey 100 capture card that converts pal to  raw format. the encoded or compressed  FMLE 3.1 using (in my case) H.264 and then the flash media server completes streaming.
    Tell me if using capture cards ATI give me an output format H.264 and use the  FMLE3.1  again and then compress it using H.264 and Flash media server completes streaming, is this  correct?

  • MX440 Video Capture

      My MX440's video capture has Brightness, Contrast and Saturation sliders default at middle of their scale, but the Hue slider sit at the bottom and can only move up to give more yellowish tint, not red!
      Does this happen to all MX440 card or just mine? I tried to upgrade the WDM driver but it is already current (V 1.16) So I'm stuck with capturing video with too much yellow in it!
      Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Please tell.

    the hue slider os always at the bottom (dependong on the program of course) and it is its defoult possition... in fact it works a little weird, not as it should but it is like it should by

  • [GeForce4 MX] Video capture resolution for G4MX440-VTD8X ???

    I would like to know some specs for my G4MX440-VTD8X card that I havent seen published anywhere online or in the manual.  I'm planning to do some video capture with this card and I want to know what is the NATIVE capture resolution of the card's hardware.  I understand that some software that can be used to capture the video allows selecting various capture resolutions for the MPEG2 format (ie 720x480).  But I also read that it is always preferable to select the capture resolution that matches the capture device's native resolution.
    Also, what is the best software to use for capturing video WITH THIS SPECIFIC graphics card product?

    Thanks for the pointer to the list of TV standards. I have tried PAL-I, PAL-M, G, D, all flavors.
    Here is what I have discovered so far:
    I connected up my multistandard TV. I set up view for NTSC, the TV displays this ok, so next I changed to PAL format (tried all flavors). The TV could display the image but it was horribly unstable (flickering, vertically). So using Nview I selected screen 2, then 'change resolution' .. I noticed a couple of things ..
    1. The resolution was fixed at 1024x768
    2. The screen frequency was fixed at 60hz
    Q1/ Does the resolution matter? How do I adjust if for the TV out port?
    Q2/ Isn't PAL refresh rate supposed to be 50 hz? If so, how do I change this in Nview?
    BTW my TV will accept:
    Television system: B/G,I,D/K,M
    Color system: PAL, PAL 60, SECAM, NTSC4.43, NTSC3.58
    So, I am pretty confident that if my card is putting out a television compliant signal my TV will be able to display it ok.
    Interesting to note that my TV will accept PAL 60. If that is PAL @ 60hz then perhaps this refresh rate (60hz according to Nview) is not the problem.
    thanks,
    Kevin

  • Problem capturing DV; random stops and "no video" error. Please help!

    I'm trying to import about 15 minutes of DV recorded in late 2005. During capture (using Capture Now...) the capture fails during each attempt at different times (13 minutes, 11 minutes, 30 seconds, 6 minutes). The error message is, "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
    If I watch the capture, right before this error message, the camcorder stops playing and starts stepping back frame by frame. The capture window says something like, "Searching for timecode." Then after a minute or so, it starts stepping forward frame by frame. Then, after this happens for a minute, the message in the capture window changes to, "Cueing source material." The camcorder starts to play again. I think what SHOULD happen is the capture resumes. But the capture video preview window remains black, and after a few seconds I get the error message.
    When I watch the tape (without capturing) I can't discern any drop outs on the tape, although I guess they could be there after 4 years. But if that is the case, why does this problem occur at a different point each time?
    I tried turning off the preference to "abort capture on dropped frames" but that had no effect.
    I'm using a Canon GL2, DV-NTSC Firewire Basic, and the system noted below.
    FCE version 4.0.1.
    Any help would be most welcome.
    Message was edited by: Anthony M Kassir MD

    Let me summarize the problem so far.
    1. When capturing DV, FCE behaves as if there is a time code break (when there isn't one) at random points on the tape. This may occur anywhere on the tape, even at the very beginning.
    2. When this occurs, FCE will roll the tape back and then forth, looking for the break, as expected. (It doesn't roll back if the tape is at the beginning, obviously.)
    3. After a minute, FCE is getting ready to start the capture again, and says "cueing source material."
    4. The camcorder starts playing the tape again, but the capture video preview window in FCE remains black, as if there is no video signal.
    5. After a few seconds, while the video on the camera is still playing, FCE gives the error, "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
    Observation: The problem occurred much more frequently when capturing DV from a Canon GL2 directly to a LaCie disk on the same Firewire bus, even though the camera is attached via Firewire 400 and the drive via Firewire 800. Capturing to an internal (non-boot) media hard drive does not solve the above problem, but the problem occurs less frequently.
    Does the above description suggest any particular explanation of what is going on? I wonder if FCE is corrupted? Should I try reinstalling FCE?
    Thanks.

  • How do get rid of an addon when it's not listed in the Addons? It's a video capture app and (small red circle on the bar) . Help!

    I can't remember the name of the addon, it looks like a small red dot on my toolbar. I know that you need to install CSHelper extension in order for the video capture to work.
    I don't want to software but as I stated before the addon isn't listed in the Addon section and if it is I don't see it.
    I really don't want to have to uninstall it Firefox and reinstall it but I will as a last resort. :(
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Could be "Download Helper" (Video Download Helper). It has a screen capture option and that option requires CSHelper.

  • How to Get Proper Video Screen Captures (Screencasts) of Photoshop and Lightroom in Win?

    Hello. I would like to get proper screen captures of Lightroom and Photoshop on Win 7/64, showing all screen elements as you see them. I tried FastStone Capture 8 and SnagIt 11.1, but they have various differing issues. Do you have a good hint?
    What's more: In my screen capture, i also want a mouse-click-sound each and every time the mouse is clicked. This is not "system audio", because the computer doesn't play a sound for every ordinary click. The capture software must add that sound. (I'm aware i can add the sound manually in post production, but want it recorded together with video.)
    Experience with Faststone Capture 8's video captures:
    I get well usable footage
    Does optionally record mouse-click-sound for each click, with adjustable volume
    Does not properly record some elements of Photoshop or Lightroom screens:
      - cursors sometimes look rough or double-sized
    - Lightrooms "TAT (Target Correction Tool)" disappears while being dragged on the image
    - the color selector box of Lightroom's Adjustment Brush is not shown, while the cursor working within that color selector box is shown
    - Lightroom's three-second-splash-message after Undo etc. is not shown
    (All these missing elements do show up in *still* captures with Faststone Capture. They also *do* show up in video captures done with SnagIt, see below)
    Experience with Snagit 11.1's video captures:
    Does properly capture all those elements that FastStone does *not* capture (listed above)
    Does *not* optionally include a mouse-click-sound for each and every mouse click (they record "system audio", but a sound on every click is not "system audio", so a regular click on a menu item has no sound)
    Videos are less smooth, cursor sometimes "jumping"
    Now, do you know a screen capture software for Win 7 that can
    properly record *anything* that's seen within Lightroom and Photoshop
    and automatically add a mouse-click-sound for each and every click i do
    and produce smooth footage without "jumping cursors"?
    Thanks for your real-life experiences!

    Myles, thanks again, here are my findings with Camtasia:
    Camtasia:
    DOES record overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector
    .camrec format isn't offered for recording, only .trec and .avi (on Win 7), but trec is usable just as .camrec i guess
    Exported MP4 looks blurry and has colour blotches, that are not visible in the initial recording, only after exporting; this doesn't change at all after setting very high quality MP4 options; i guess i didn't look properly
    i see how to add mouse-click sounds; i don't like the sound they provide so much; maybe it can be exchanged.
    Other tests:
    Camstudio:
    mouse click sounds very weird (my mistake?)
    does NOT record LR overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector
    Screen-cast-o-matic, optionally online, free version:
    DOES record overlays like adjustment brush's colour selector. Mouse-click-sound not in free version. "System audio" is promised in paid version, but that does not necessarily mean a sound for each mouse-click. Contacted support for more
    Straightforward using, lots of short video tutorials (useful for absolute beginners).
    Free downloaded program 1.4 only works on primary monitor, the online launched app also records on secondary monitor
    Don't see option to record a "window", only set resolutions
    More "jumpy" than Faststone
    More interesting pro-version seems to be rent-only-licenced, at 15 USD per year, not a one-time-buy

  • Need Video Capture Card and DVD Burner Quick!

    Here's my situation. I've created some movie titles in iMovie and have no way to get them from my Macintosh to my DVD/VCR to incorporate them in a tape I'm making. I need it like NOW as a lot of people are waiting for copies of the tape!
    For some time I've wanted a device called a video capture card. It has the ability to play videos on your computer and you can print out images from them. What I want to do is make DVDs of my VHS home movies. I did learn you can't just walk into any local store and buy such a device; it must be ordered.
    Desperation is a great motivator and finally (duh) I decided to look at a site specializing in Macintosh products, instead of studying every capture card online. Surprisingly, they offer three models: one cheap ($50-some), one at twice the price of the first, and a third at ten times the price of the second! That's quite a jump! Here's the middle one, which they claim is the best on the planet: http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail~dpno~197329.asp
    So, as I understand this, I somehow connect this device to my computer (Power Mac G4), hook a VCR to it, and then I can play videotapes on my computer. If I'm in a desperate hurry to burn DVDs I suppose my friend's DVD player will also connect to this device, or am I wrong in this?
    Even if I am right (that a DVD player/burner will connect to this) I still don't see how that gives ME a DVD burner with which to transfer my videos to DVD! My combo player will make videos from DVDs but not the other way around! So do I have to run out and buy a DVD burner, and should it be any special kind since it will be used with a device connected to a Macintosh? I need this ASAP so thanks for any advice, or clarification to my understanding of how this process works!

    Cornelia,
    Lennart's links are very good and informative. But one thing you should know is that an external DVD burner will not play a DVD - it only burns them. Since you want to view the DVD and pause at a particular scene and print it, you'll need some way to view your DVD. You also need a way to convert the iMovie project with the imported VHS footage, to a burnable format. iDVD can do that, but I noticed you have OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). If you don't have iDVD you'll need to buy it from the Apple store.
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70901/wo/u13Sbz1 DQJRc2kZnHbi1QKZybZA/1.0.19.1.0.8.25.7.11.0.3 or you can buy Roxio Toast 7, but toast is much more expensive. For Toast go to: http://www.roxio.com/
    You also need a media player so you can view your final DVD. I did some quick research and found out that none of the free media players allows you to print - which is what you want to do. There are quite a few free media players available, like Nice player and Xine Player, but you need Panther or higher to use them. Because you're running OS X 10.2, the only free media player that you can use is VLC media player. To download a free VLC player go to: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ You do need QT 6.5.2. or higher. So you may need to update your QT.
    You can't print a paused image, but you can take a snap shot of the still image, then print that. Snap Shot=CommandShift4. This will allow you to select the paused picture in the screen, or if you like just a portion of that paused picture. It will save on your desktop as a picture. Double click on the Picture, then print that.
    Then it sounds like after you've burned the DVD with your titles, you will need to connect a VHS recorder to a DVD player and record your DVD on to VHS tape.
    Good Luck,

    hi
    I am doing final year project it has server at one end which is connected to video capturing device-webcam in my case
    and the client is mobile.
    I want the live video captured be transmitted to the mobile client on fetch video request.
    I have tried implementing it but facing some problems so would like to know the reason behing and also ask if the way i am following is correct or not
    At server end i tried to extract frame as follows:
    //the datasource handler class is as follows

                                        Thread.sleep(500);
                                    catch(Exception e)
                                ctr = 0;  // ctr back to zero for the new image
                                //break;
                            else
                                //writing to byte[]
                                img_data[ctr] = (byte)0xFF;
                                ctr++;
                                img_data[ctr] = (byte)data;
                                ctr++;
                            fm = false;
                catch(Exception e){}
        }The problem i am facing is the client gets the black image just for a fraction of second and then the application hangs and no video is visible.
    I have very little time left to complete this project as deadline is very close
    please would be very grateful if guided timely.

    i saw in recent posts some protocols had been made use of like rtp i am not making use of any of these
    will it effect?I can see that you're not using RTP... and "will it effect?" doesn't make any sense AT ALL...
    is the way i have made use of jmf correct?There's no correct way to use an API... but no, you're not doing things in even remotely a "tradional" way...
    *like the way i am extracting the frame,
    and how can i set the resolution of the video taken by cam and adjust the frame rate?*I have no idea if your code works. I assume that you would have tested it, and proved it to either be producing a valid JPEG image or not. If you've not done that testing, then you obviously need to.
    because i want live video to be seen at client end i am seriously confused and the progress as just come to an hault at this point and am in real need of guidance.You should probably be using RTP and the tradional way of using JMF then...

    Read through all of the links I gave the person on the above thread and you'll be on a lot better footing as far as using JMF goes.
    shall i send the server side code.Till now server and client are both on local host.No, I don't need to see any more of your code. I'm not a proof reader, and I'm not going to debug it for you. Do you own work.

  • Is there video capture software which will capture only the canvas and not my cursor or the way I move the canvas?

    Hi,
    Does anybody know of a video capture software which only captures the canvas and not my cursor or the way I move the canvas?
    I want to simulate a painting being created brush stroke by brush stroke. It would also be good if I could select the layer that it is meant to be recording.
    I guess this would have to be a plugin of some sort.
    If not - do you have any good suggestions of the best workflow of creating this from Photoshop to After Effects (I don't want to use revealing paths etc...)
    Thanks for any help,
    Luke

    That won't work. Screen cap tools by their nature always capture the display buffer of the whole active window. At best, they respect GDI "drawing layers" and regions like Camtasia does, meaning they differntiate between mouse cursors, window frames and the actual content to get more efficient compression. For the rest - see the previous answer.
