Comparing documents in Pages?

Hello,
How do I compare 2 versions of a word document in Pages to see the differences? (Alternatively, is there any way to do this using the terminal?) Please help!
Thanks in advance!
Lali

Hello
given the structure of a Pages document:
a -- a subfolder named Contents and an other one named QuickLook.
b -- several picture files corresponding to images inserted in the document.
When the doc is in good health, double clicking these files open them in their creation application.
c -- index.xml.gz which is a packed version of the XML file describing our document.
If we double click it, it expands as index.xml which may be read in any XML aware application.
I assumes that comparison requires that the packed xml files are expanded then you would be able to compare the XML files themselves.

  • How do I compare documents in Pages (they way you can do it, with redline, in Word)?

Hi, I'm trying to compare two versions of a document and need to see a redline, but can't seem to figure out if this is possible in Pages. Any ideas?

Pages ABSOLUTELY has a track changes feature, and it ABSOLUTELY shows track changes when an MS Word doc is opened. It does not automatically accept them, either.
Now... I wish someone could tell me how to combine a version of a doc without track changes on, with a prior version that has track changes on (someone sent me a final doc and forgot to leave the tracking on!)

  • 250 pages limitation in Acrobat 9 "Compare Documents"

When comparing the PDFs with more than 250 pages, the "Compare Documents" function will report as "Please limit documents to 250 pages before comparing", it is inconvenience for the comparison between big PDFs, is there any method to solve this?
    Thank you in advance!

The simplest method is to extract blocks of pages from each document and do the comparison. Repeat for multiple blocks.

This video details using the Compare Documents command in Acrobat X Pro. to identify what has changed between two versions of a PDF file.

Thanks for that, but if we have a large document in which there are only a few differences, is there any mechanism to easily find each difference, or look at ONLY the differences? It offers a link on the first page to the "first" difference, but after that, it seems we have to eyeball the document or compare panel to find any other differences. Again, in a large document with few differences, that's painful (and risky, if spotting any changes are critical).
I've also looked in the help and now am looking to see if other resources discussing PDF compare might show it. Thanks for any thoughts.

  • Comparing documents with Track Changes on

    We're currently using Acrobat Pro 8.1.6 with Word 2003 (11.8307.8221) SP3.
We create PDFs with Track Changes on (showing).
We're testing and will soon be implementing Acrobat 9.1.3
    Here's the issue:
We have a large number (10,000+ documents) created in Word, with Track Changes showing.
We create a PDF using Acrobat 8.1.6.
As long as we continue using Acrobat 8.1.6 we can compare documents with Track Changes on.
However, now we're moving to Acrobat 9.1.3.
We can open these existing documents, and edit them (delete pages, add comments, etc.) but when we try to compare an 8.1.6 file that has Track Changes on, we're getting an error message:
"These dots conform to PDF/A standards and do not allow editing. Please modify PDF/A secumenttings to allow editing and try again."
In Word, our Adobe PDF settings DO NOT HAVE "Create PDF/A-1a:2005 compliant file" checked (for kicks we tried it with this option on and off...same results). We have also DISABLED "Enable Accessibility and Reflow with tagged Adobe PDF."
This is only an issue taking 8.1.6 files into 9.1.3. If we create a PDF in 9.1.3 with Track Changes on, we have no problems. It appears to be a disconnect with 8.1.6 and 9.1.3.
I've gone through the forums and the web, and cannot find this issue anywhere else.
I can also recreate the issue at will.
Anyone out there have any ideas? We can't recreate the old 8.1.6 PDFs in 9.1.3...too many files, too little time, too much trouble.
    Thank you!

Open the old pdf in Pro 3.? using file open.  Under "Advanced" select "Preflight", under "PDF/A compliance" select "Remove PDF/A information" and save the pdf.  We had to do this to both old and new pdf's before we could compare without the mentioned error.  It sucks though, having to convert the documents and save them before compare.  Hope this helps!

  • Comparing documents and false positives

    Hello,
I often have to send a proof of a book to a printer. The proof is a PDF. When they return a soft proof--another PDF that they will use to print--I need to quickly compare the two to make sure that there have been no changes in the text.
The Compare Documents feature certainly beats a side-by-side eyeball scan. But I often get a lot of false positives, words are flagged that actually have not changed.
It appears that my PDF, exported from InDesign has some hidden discretionary hyphens. In ID these are used to make sure a word breaks at the end of the line at the correct syllable. They are invisible when printed. In a PDF these are not necessary because the text ain't gonna reflow, right?
But when I compare the soft proof to the original PDF, words with discretionary hyphens are flagged. Somehow the printer has stripped the discretionary hyphens. That's fine but what must I do to get rid of them in my PDF?
Below is an example. The PDF shown is the one from the printer. The comment box shows the difference from the original PDF, though there is in fact no difference on the page.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Tom

I like Acrobat's text comparisons, which have saved me from bad goofs several times -- mostly stray key-strokes, but once I caught an InDesign footnote numbering snafu.  However, the false positives have always been annoying even without flagging every single discretionary hyphen.
I imagine you have tried the image method for comparisons, a modern version of the old trick of putting printouts of the old and new versions of a page on a light table to find differences.
I don't recall seeing comments of the type "undefined", but does re-sorting comments by type at least isolate these so you can step through the rest?  I'm no scripter, but can a javascript mark or eliminate comments containing hyphens?
More drastic, would it be worth trying to eliminate the discretionary hyphens?  For instance, you could apply Harb's "Freeze Composition" in InDesign, and then search-and-replace all discretionary hyphens.  (Read the comments on the In-Tools site, as well as those in the InDesignSecrets blog it links to because you might want to modify the way it handles hyphens.)
    Good luck!
    David

  • Printing changes from a compared document

I have a compared document which on the screen shows the differences in different colors and highlights. But when I print the document the colors do not show up. Is there a setting that allows for printing the changes in color?

Using Pages ’09 v4.1, I can only duplicate your export results if I choose to ignore that the Pages numbering default is to continue from previous — thus your source would need to show a 1 - 4 number series before export. You can rectify this, by positioning the pointer at the 3 list item, and choosing Start at 1, as shown below. When used in this manner, what you see, is what you get in the resultant Word .doc document.
The other approach is to just type “Old Business” followed by a return. Then, without using the List tab from the Text Inspector, simply type your own numbered items and content followed by a hard return. Now, you control the numbering yourself. In kind, “New Business” would follow, again with purposely typed number sequence. That exports to Word .doc nicely too. Doesn't matter whether you have Automatically Detect Lists enabled in Pages preferences or not.

  • RE: Comparison documents in Pages

    Hello everybody,
I would like to comparison two documents in Pages. Is it possible or not? If it is possible can you please explain how can I do it. Thank you for advise.
    Massimo

Sorry, maybe my English is not good.
I mean that I would like to make compare two more less the same documents. For example I have one version of a contract as a final version. My partner send me the same contract also as a final version (not in mark up) and I need to know what is different between my version and the version from my partner.

  • The loss of functionality of Compare Documents in Acrobat.

The Compare Documents function in Acrobat 9 is now useless to my department. I am currently a Graphic Designer/ Tech Writer who writes operator manuals and had always used Compare Documents function to find the differences in the documents (mostly textual differences). Then we updated and lost this functionality altogether. Now, the only comparison option allowed is "Scanned Documents," which treats the documents as pictures and only looks for the differences of the over-all page. I would like the old textual comparison function restored. I would have mentioned something sooner, but I was hoping this was just an accident and would be fixed in a future patch

This would be better handled in the Acrobat forum. The compare document works more effectively now that you are given three choice:
You choose if the documents are (a) Reports, spreadsheets, magazine layouts, (b) Presentation decks, drawings, or illustrations, or scanned documents. You are not limited to scanned documents. If that is all you are seeing please repost in the Acrobat Windows or Acrobat Mac forum, report your version of Acrobat, your OS, and perhaps a screen shot of what you are seeing. Note, I get three options as above and I am not restricted to Scanned documents.

  • Canon Pixma 922 - when I copy a document the pages come out blank.

When I copy a document the pages came out blank.
Also, when I print an MS-Word document, the pages come out blank, however, if I print an HTML document from a website, the printer prints fine.

    Hi dstei33162,
Since HTML documents are printing correctly, it is possible that the large black ink tank in the unit may be clogged.  You can print a nozzle check pattern from the printer to see if the inkjet nozzles are dispensing the ink correctly.  To do this, please follow the steps located here.  Once it is printed, please examine it and compare it to a correctly print pattern here.  If all of the colors are not appearing, including the black grid at the top above the colors, performing print head cleanings on the unit may resolve the issue.  To perform the cleanings, please follow the steps located here.  We recommend performing at least one cleaning and two deep cleanings.
Should you still experience difficulty, the printer may require servicing; please call or email us using one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • Acrobat X "Compare Documents" Function Failing on Large / Complex PDFs

    To all,
Upon initial testing, we were successful using the Compare Documents function on complex test files: two versions of an automotive wiring diagram.  However, when attempting to compare two versions of a section from an automotive service repair manual (includes textual and graphical content), we receive ana error message "Operation Not Permitted."  We are aware of the 250 page limitation and ability to select option "Text Only," but the document we are testing now is only 56 pages.  Any thoughts / suggestions as to how we can alleviate this issue?  Your input appreciated.  Thanks!

@CtDave. I have gone back and checked the reduced versions and they have the same embedded fonts that the original and unreduced documents have. Please see the pics below.  Thanks for any/all help!

  • I created a document in Pages on my ipad and now it won't open up. How can I fix this?

I created a document on my Ipad and when I finished it, I closed Pages. When I went to re-open Pages and see the document it wouldn't open. I click on the document and it shows the processing symbol but then the entire program closes. All of the other documents within pages open up fine, just not this one. Any help?

Try resetting your iPad.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for 7 or 8 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
I'm assuming your default is to save Pages documents to iCloud, and that you had a good WiFi connection when you closed Pages the last time you tried to save the document.

  • I can't save my open documents in Pages.

I have 2 untitled documents in pages open. I have the animated progress bar spinning and spinning. - I have tried to reinstall Pages but that dosn't cut it. What to do ?? Please help.

    Hey fruhulda,
I have a similar problem although I'm running OSX 10.9.5.  I'v just started to completely remove pages and attempt a reinstall.  I did the search for the plist file.  There was only one file with the com.apple.iwork.pages name but it did not have the .plist extension, even when I checked the info page.  Is this the same file?
I'm not sure I want to update to Yosemite yet, but it looks like I may have to in order to continue to work with my pages documents, unless the reinstall works.
