Comparing iMovieHD vs. iMovie08

I loaded iMovieHD today and noticed that encodings are so much more faster with HD than 08. So I started trying to figure out why. I noticed that a 2 minute clip imported is HUGE in the project where as in 08 it is about actual size(regardless of importing from camera or card). This HD project was over a 1gb in size.
I ended up creating the same size 720P AIC movie file in each version. It took 4 minutes in HD vs 16-18 in '08. The file output sizes was 538mb(HD) to 747mb('08). I compared by viewing in Quicktime at the same timecode. I can tell considerable differences where the larger 747mb('08) was sharper and more vivid. I attribute this to more databits in the file.
The source file was 4 clips from a Sanyo HD camera captured a 1920x1080 at 30P. The import was close to 8 minutes in HD and almost 4 in '08.
My question is, short of the editing functions that HD provides does the HD version compare with 08 in quality? I guess I am a little nitpicky about this even though HD seems so much faster. Maybe it is personal preference but I thought I would ask others what they thought about the two.
Thanks in advance.

I'm only guessing but in your particular case the difference may come from how each app treat 'still camera movies'.
I'm assuming Sanyo's HD clips are from Xacti HD1000, and although it is more like a camcorder than a still cam it does not fall into traditional camcorder category. Camcorders usually generate certain closed file types - DV, HDV, AVCHD and iMovie 08 either import them natively (DV) or convert to AIC movies (HDV,AVCHD). But when it comes to h264 or mpeg4 movies out of other cameras iPhoto store them as still cam movie and iMovie does not perform any conversion on them. Sanyo's h264 mp4 files are still considered this 'still cam movie' even at 1920x1080 res, and iMovie08 has difficulty performing in all realtime.
iMovieHD, on the other hand, converts everything to work with the project type. It does not support multi format / multi resolution mix up like iMovie08, and if you choose 1080i or 720p project setting it converts all source movies to AIC codec unless your source movie happens to match the target format. Thus file size becomes much larger but lighter on CPU to perform editing function.
As for 720p export, the file size difference is probably from the export setting if both movies are identical in length. Perhaps iMovie 08 uses a bit higher bitrate. Better quality attributes to higher bitrate, and also to the fact that iMovie08 did only one conversion (h264 -> 720p AIC) where as iMovieHD did it twice (h264->1080i AIC -> 720p), thus more generation loss in quality.
Personally I think iMovie should treat HD res h264 like the ones out of camcorder and convert them to AIC to maintain realtime operation, which is why it converts AVCHD - another HD res h264 movies - to AIC.

  • Canon GL1 Issues

I just bought a new iMac two days ago. Today, I decided to have some fun and capture DV from my Canon GL1 using Firewire. The problem is that the camera is not being recognized in either iMovieHD or iMovie08 (I am not daisy chaining any other components on Firewire.) Thinking I may have a bad FW port I connected an external Lacie FW drive and that appears to be working properly.
The GL1 and cables works flawlessly using iMovieHD or FCE using my old Powermac G4.
Any ideas why I cannot get the GL1 working on my iMac with iMovie HD or IMovie08?

Hi ..sorry; I was away for a couple of days..
"..the imported HD video in iMovie is in the Apple Intermediate Codec. The video imported into FCP is in HDV codec.." ..That's normal: iMovie uses the AIC to "rebuild" the missing MPEG-2 frames in which HD is recorded on the tape.
FCP is a different animal altogether, and doesn't need the AIC.
..Did you do a QuickTime upgrade which may have disturbed iMovie? ..I wouldn't bother re-installing the OS - that's a bit drastic! ..and you'd have to make sure that you re-installed using 'Archive and Install' so that you didn't lose any of your existing settings - but if you've recently applied a QuickTime update, I'd re-apply it, just to make sure that it 'sticks'.
I'm surprised that it won't capture HD if you start a new project with an existing HD clip (..which you've dragged in there from another project..) because playing an HD clip first, before importing more, usually convinces iMovie that it really can handle incoming HD.
Have you recently added any other codecs; Flip4Mac, DivX ..anything like that? If so, try removing them from wherever they may be (..probably one of your QuickTime>Plugins folders ..either within your username area, or in the main Library ..or possibly even in the System>Library..) and putting them somewhere else - like your Desktop - and then doing a restart.
Have you added a RealPlayer codec, or a WMV player? ..any of these might interfere with the AIC. Just reinstalling the AIC on its own might not 'take', and so it may be necessary (..if you had added extra video players..) to re-install iMovie HD 6, from your DVD or whatever it came on, and then doing the upgrade(s) again.
Sorry: I can't think of anything else just now which might fix it..

  • Straight from camera

I have looked high and low, tried everything I know, but to no avail can I find how to record straight from the camera to final cut express. I can do it in iMovieHD, but when I go to capture in FCE and then click on "Now" it keeps telling me my camera needs to be set to VTR mode. I can capture what has already be recorded on tape, but not live. Don't tell me this is impossible and if so why can I do it with iMovieHD or iMovie08?
I don't want to take the time to capture then transfer, I should just be able to capture and edit.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Try basic firewire NTSC (or PAL for Europe) in easy settings.
You can also use Quicktime Player PRO to record directly the signal from your camcorder through firewire and save the movie on your disk. Be sure to save in a codec supported by FCE HD.

  • Compare iMovie08 Video Capture/Categorizing to FootTrack and iDive

Can anyone compare the iMovie08 video capture and categorizing capabilities to FootTrack and iDive?

    Hi,
I am the German translator of FootTrack and thought I'd jump in here with an example of things FootTrack can do, the way I use the program, anyway. I shoot a lot of documentary footage, some of which is of a stock variety, i.e. I shoot on spec and might not use the footage for a few years. FootTrack lets me capture the footage and compresses it to a smaller size that I can keep on my internal drive after I have deleted the original DV footage. That means I can tag, organise and scan compressed versions of my clips without having to have access to the original tape. When I have decided which clips I need for a project, I can export a FCP XML file to use as the base for a batch capture, because FootTrack captures timecode as part of its metadata (although it doesn't capture this for HDV at the moment, I believe FootTrack HD is in development). This saves a lot of time. iMovie on the other hand only knows the footage you have on your machine, which in my case is only the current project footage, so the organisation that it does the iPhoto way is not much use to me for older footage.
I think of FootTrack as a pro video editor's organisational tool that gives me access to all of my footage without having to store huge amounts of DV data on external drives, or having to index my tapes with detailed info. I don't edit with it, preferring to edit with a video editing program. Those tasks are quite separate.
I hope this helps. If you are trying to decide whether FootTrack is for you, try asking questions at the FootTrack yahoo group or contact Todd, the developer. He is a great dude, as mentioned before.

  • Importing imovie08 project to imovieHD

Hi does anyone know how to import an imovie 08 project into imovieHD?
I copied my 08 project on to a jump drive but when I put in onto my laptop (which has imovie HD) and try to import it, it shows a folder with a bunch of exe files.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Share you project using SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME and pick DV as your codec.

  • Help!!! How to get quality Keynote 08 slideshow into imoviehd or 08?

HELP!!! I've been reading every discussion out here. I have learned several new things but can't seem to fix my problem. I have made a small (it will be larger later-I'm just practicing) slideshow in keynote with transitions and builds with mostly black & white pics. I figured out how to add the music later but I can't seem to get the quality that I have in keynote when exported using quicktime, Itunes or garageband. I've tried different settings for exports but to no avail. I thought I was going to get the quality I wanted with the last export, but when imported into imoviehd the slideshow was not fullscreen & the quality wasn't good! I've made dvds of slideshows using imovie08 that were great and easy but I wanted to get more transitions and some special effects, so I thought I would use keynote. But I'm about ready to throw everything out the window!!!! Please help if you can. Thank you!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Go into iPhoto's Preferences and under the Events section set the Double-click Event: menu to Magnify. See if that's what you want.
The edit mode is only entered when you double click on a photo's thumbnail.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IMovie08 share to miniDV tapes

This appears to have gone with imovie08....
I have a Sony HDR-HC7 miniDV high def camcorder and I can do all the HD editing I need to in iMovie08... the problem is that because HD (or blu-ray) is so young I can't yet easily burn and view high def DVD's to watch on my HD ready TV...
My solution was to make the video film and then export it back to tape so that I will be able to use the tapes and make those DVD's when HD technology is more affordable and available.
I was starting to use iMovieHD 6 to do this but have encountered horrible audio bugs in my transitions... (see my previous post).
My question.... Is there any way to share back to miniDV tapes with iMovie08?

    turski wrote:

this feature isn't included in the actual version of iM08 ...
    only workaround:
'Export with Quicktime.. ' and using 'Apple Intermediate Codec' as codec, import THAT into a iMHD6 project, export to camera..

  • IMovieHD won't import widescreen - keeps switching to 4/3

Hi - trying to import widescreen footage from Canon MD216 mini DV to iMovieHD.
Followed all the instructions - selecting "widescreen DV" option when creating project. A blank widescreen appears, but always switches back to 4:3 format as soon as I import.
This never happens in iMovie08 - which imports widescreen flawlessly.
Was wanting to experiment using iMovieHD, but can't get going until this widescreen refusal is sorted out. Looked up preferences - but couldn't see anything there.
Can anyone out there please help? Thanks

Hi Matt - read your message, and have just tried importing footage about 2 minutes ago.
I have to report that the "title-trick" is essential. When no "title trick" is used, the images are squeezed into the 4:3 format, with bars on either side. However, when this is done using titles, the footage loads perfectly in widescreen. Works like a dream...
Just for the record, the camera is a Canon MD 216 miniDV palmcorder - a very basic TAPE machine that I bought new for £200 ($300 approx) about 8 months ago in a High St store. Previously, all my editing had been done on iMovie08 which had been factory set at 25fps PAL.
This would also have been the case for iMovieHD - it would have come preset at 25fps. But I changed it, not really thinking, after having read a David Pogue (American) book on iMovie 08. This was actually really well written and very amusing. There was a really funny couple of paragraphs describing the 30fps - 29.98(?)fps situation and this must have stuck in my mind when I was setting up.
I've only ever used it widescreen, so I can't really comment on mixed formats.
Hope the feedback was helpful. Thanks again. ALAN BOWIE

  • Share iMovieHD to Media Browser

Previous posts in March, indicated the best quality was obtained by sharing iMovie HD to Media Browser rather than sharing to iDVD. Sharing to Media Browser was tested and compared to sharing iDVD. Sharing to Media Browser produced the best quality. When I am in iMovieHD and I select Share, the following options appear: Email, QuickTime, iDVD, eWeb,Garage Band, Bluetooth, iPad, Video Camera and Share. When I select Share, the next window shows icons for these selections? So, how do I select Share to Media Browser?
    I am using iMovie HD v 6.0.2 and iDVD v 7.0.4
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
In iMovie HD 6 you don't need to Share at all if you only wish to create a DVD in iDVD. The discussions about "Share to Media Browser" apply only to later versions of iMovie. The HD 6 version does not have this option.
With HD 6, all you need to do is _drag your movie into the background area of the iDVD Theme_ - be careful not to drop it into one of the Drop Zones. iDVD will render any items in your movie that still require rendering (e.g, slow motion) - most items (such as transitions and titles) will already have been rendered by iMovie.
Avoid using "Share to iDVD". In _some circumstances_, this will produce "jaggies" on stills - it's a well known bug in iMovie HD 6. A search in the HD 6 forum should highlight posts on this issue.
Dragging the movie into iDVD will produce excellent results - barely distinguishable from your original DV material (if that's what you are using). I can't speak for HD material as I use iMovie '09 for High Definition footage.

  • HD Camcorder w/iMac - MiniDV tapes or Digital harddrive better w/iMovie08

I'm looking at purchasing a new Canon camcorder either the HV20 or HG10 and have a new iMac with iMovie08. The HV20 uses the miniDV tapes and the HG10 has a 40 GB harddrive. Does anyone have any suggestions between the two types? I like the idea of not having to buy tapes but wasn't sure if I would have any import or quality problems with using the camcorder with the harddrive. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple discussions robnorv,
Look through the threads here and compare the number of problems encountered with hard drive cams, as opposed to miniDV cams. The choice should be clear and, as a bonus, with miniDV you will have unfettered access to use iMovie 06, should you find that iMovie 08 doesn't offer you enough editing solutions. You will have some quality degradation using a hard drive cam due to the high compression the format uses. DV is what iMovies all use and a miniDV cam will need no conversion processes to get the video into any iMovie programme you choose to use. Do some more research about these factors before you decide.
Tape cams also allow you to back up your completed video to a tape for archival purposes. If you go miniDV, it is good practice to buy quality tapes and always stick with one brand. Different manufacturers use somewhat different tape formulations and changing tape brands can cause head clogging problems. I bought several boxes of one brand (Panasonic MQ) online, where you will find good deals.

  • Get the values from a table comparing fields of different data types

    Hi Experts,
I want to fetch AFVC-AUFPL and AFVC- APLZL by passing WBS element from a ztable.
    select aufpl aplzl
      from  afvc
      into TABLE gt_afvc
      FOR ALL ENTRIES IN gt_boq
      where projn = gt_boq-posid.
    AFVC-PROJN - NUMC 8  (WBC ELEMENT)
    ZTABLE-POSID - CHAR24 (WBC ELEMENT)
How to get aufpl and aplzl by comparing those 2?
    Regards
    Mani

WBS element does have an conversion routine at the domain level. So sometimes you work with one format (8 digits) and sometimes with 24 digits.
    You use FMs
    CONVERSION_EXIT_ABPSP_INPUT
    CONVERSION_EXIT_ABPSP_OUTPUT
to convert between values. Do your conversion before your select and do not forget to use a large enough data element for the field, which gets the 24-digits long value of the field.

Since installing LTR 5.4, which I've now upgraded to 5.6, I've encountered repeated slowness and malfunctions in operations, especially when using the Compare View function and the Tab key to open and close the right and left side panels.  Such problems never arose during two years of using LTR-4 and nothing else has changed on my computer.  I have a pretty simple system with only a few plug-ins, which are usually not in operation.  I have 12GB of RAM in my Windows 7 PC.  I could illustrate these problems with screen shots if you would tell me how to submit screen shots.  Otherwise I will try to describe the problems in words.
The problem is clearly cumulative, growing worse as usage time passes.  Compare View feature gradually slows down and eventually seems to choke as my work session proceeds. If I Exit LTR and re-enter and start all over, things will work normally for maybe 30 minutes, but then the Compare View feature begins to become very slow to respond.   In a recent example with my screen full of thumbnails in Library mode I highlighted two images to compare. LTR started to open the Compare View screen by first having the top row of thumbnails disappear to be replaced by the "SELECT" and "CANDIDATE" words in their spaces  (but no images), but Compare View never succeeded in gaining control of the screen. After some seconds the top row of thumbnails reasserted its position and the Compare View windows disappeared. But LTR kept trying to bring them back. Again the top row of thumbnails would go away, Select and candidate would reappear, try again, and give up. This went on for at least 2-3 minutes before I tried to choose File and Exit, but even that did not initially want to respond. It doesn't like to accept other commands when it's trying to open Compare View. Finally it allowed me to exit.
To experiment I created a new catalog of 1100 images.  After 30-40 minutes, the Compare View function began to operate very slowly. With left and right side panels visible and two thumbnails highlighted, hitting Compare View can take half a minute before the two mid-size  images open in their respective SELECT and CANDIDATE windows. When the side panels are open and two images are in the Select/Candidate spaces, hitting the Tab button to close the side panels produces a very delayed response--25-30 seconds to close them, a few more seconds to enlarge the two images to full size. To reverse the process (i.e., to recall the two side panels), hitting Tab would make the two sides of the screen go black for up to a minute, with no words visible. Eventually the info fields in the panels would open up.
I also created a new user account and imported a folder of 160 images. After half an hour Compare View began mis-placing data.  (I have a screen shot to show this.)  CANDIDATE appears on the left side of SELECT, whereas it should be on the right. The accompanying camera exposure data appears almost entirely to the left of the mid-screen dividing line. Although the Candidate and Select headings were transposed, the image exposure data was not, but the data for the image on the right was almost entirely to the left of the line dividing the screen in two.
Gurus in The Lightroom Forum have examined Task Manager data showing Processes running and Performance indicators and they see nothing wrong.  I could also send screen shots of this data.
At this point, the only way I can process my images is to work 30-40 minutes and then shut down everything, exit, and re-start LTR.  This is not normal.  I hope you can find the cause, and then the solution.  If you would like to see my screen shots, tell me how to submit them.

  • How to compare delivery date in schedule lines and PGI in outbound delivery

    Hi,
I want to create a report to monitor and compare different dates in sales and delivery process.
One of my key figure is the comparison between date confirmed to the customer, that I can find in the schedule line of the sales order, and the actual goods issue date from the outbound delivery.
But I can't succeed in making the link between delivery and schedule lines, means between LIKP and VBEP.
    Would you have any idea?
    Thank you.

It seems there's no exact (table) connection / link between delivery item and schedule line item.
Those who were searching for this thing (link / connection between delivery item and schedule line) were recommended to use FM "RV_SCHEDULE_CHECK_DELIVERIES".
This FM calculates the delivered quantity for each schedule line, so it makes link between the delivery item and schedule lines - however if you check the code it's quite sophisticated...
(if you put a breakpoint in the FM and display a SO in VA03, you can check how the parameters have to be populated with data).

  • SSRS Matrix report. Variance expression by Month. Need to compare month from prior year to current month of current year VS2010

Please help.  I have a matrix report.  In the report I have row group  PO Type.  One the Column groups I have a parent group by Fiscal Year, and then a child group by Month.  When I run the report, I get two years of data back broken
out by month.  Please see below.
Now here is where I am getting stuck.  I need to take the variance between the current month of the current year, from the same month of the prior year.  So I need to show the difference between Oct , 2014 from Oct, 2013. November, 2014 from November
    2013... etc. etc.
In the example below, how do I create a column or row showing the variance for Contracts for October 2014.  I need to take the contracts for October 2014 which is 3 and subtract that from October 2013 which is 8.  Any suggestions? How do I do that
for each month?  Then I need to do it for the quarter... then the year?  But I'll be happy if I can just get the month working first.
    Any help will be appreciated.
here is what my rdl file looks like.
Here is what my report looks like when I render it.

    Hi Adrian_s2012,
According to your description, you want to compare values for the month of current year with the month of prior year and get the variance. Right?
In Reporting Services, we don't have any function to get this "Year to Year" Growth. In this scenario, if you data source is a cube, we suggest you use Analysis Services to achieve your requirement. If this data source is just from database, it will be hardly
to calculate the variance because we need to compare the values within every two different column group and matrix generate adjacent columns one by one. Even we make it by using custom, every time executing the long code when generating result
in a cell will reduce a lot of performance, we really don't suggest to do that in SSRS. Here is a thread with much easier requirement, please take a reference of that:
