Comparison between standard MPB 15" and Retina MBP 15"

Hi to everyone!
I'm about to replace my 2007 MBP with a new one! I want an advice about which one to choose between the standard MBP 15" with some optional or the stock MPB Retina 15". I've a budget of 2000 US$ that is enough to purchase both with the educational discount that I can ask because I'm a student.
In the table I've written all the specs of both the MPBs.
standard MBP 15"
MBP Retina 15"
optional 2,6 GHz i7 quad core processor and 1GB ddr5 geforce 650M
stock 2,4 GHz i7 quad core processor and 1GB ddr5 geforce 650M
optional 8GB of RAM
stock 8GB of RAM
optional hi-res antiglare display (1680X1050)
stock Retina display
stock 500 GB HD
stock 256 GB SSD
weight: 2,56kg; possibility to replace RAM and HD (by myself)
weight: 2,02kg; RAM and HD are welded to the mainboard
dvd reader/writer
no dvd reader/writer
price: 1999 US$ (with edu discount)
price: 1999 US$ (with edu discount)
by the fact both cost me the same, I'm a bit unsure on which one to buy!
which one has the best performances? which one has the best value for money? for what regards working with windows on bootcamp, is the retina display suited for the job? what I mean is if windows apps do properly support a so high resolution (I work a lot with computer graphics).
thanks to everyone in advance
(I apologize for any grammar error but I speak english as a second language)

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I recommend the 15-inch MacBook Pro without a Retina display. In a MacBook Pro, you can upgrade the memory and hard drive without voiding the warranty, and the MacBook Pro with Retina display has got everything soldered into the logic board, so repairs are much expensive with the MacBook Pro with Retina display. Also, the Retina display is only needed for some specific jobs, so if you are going to use the computer for basic tasks, the 15-inch MacBook Pro is perfect.
Note that Windows has got a resolution limitation, and you may have problems with some applications because of the high resolution of a MacBook Pro with Retina display, so you may have to reduce the resolution.
Also, if you buy the 15-inch MacBook Pro, buy it with 4 GB of memory. After buying it, buy more memory from OWC or Crucial and install it in your computer. You will save a lot of money

  • HELP! Jerky playback on Premiere Pro 6.0.2 CS6 and Retina MBP (16GB)

    Dear all!
    Please help me to solve this problem!
    It's going on Premiere Pro 6.0.2 CS6 and Retina MBP with 16GB RAM installed.
    CUDA Driver Version: 5.0.24
    MacBook Pro Retina, Mid 2012
    Processor  2,7 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.1 (12B19)
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 (6.0.2. - 072)
    While playing back inside PP a jerky playback occurs, every 1-2 seconds it rewinds to 2-3 frames back and continues to play forth...
    No special console messages or something similar visible.
    Have tried to clean the cache but it doesn't help. Also have tried to switch the mode between CUDA, OpenCL and SW - without any visible changes...
    Exhausted... Please HELP!!!!

    avrbox, I had the same problem and went crazy because I didn't find a proper solution. I use Windows, though. Finally, I got to fix the problem. I use a i5 processor, which I overclocked with an asrock tool that came with the mainboard (to about 3350 MHZ where the system ran stable). When I turned overclocking off, Premiere played back the clips just fine. I overclocked then step by step until the playback went jerky again and kept that frequency. Maybe your processor is overclocked by stock or you did it manually?
    Hope this is your solution!

  • AIR 3.9.0.880 StageWebView and Retina MBP

    When I compile my app using AIR 3.9.0.880, my StageWebView is 1/4 size on my Retina MBP unless I pass true to the StageWebView constructor for the "useNative" parameter. Is this by design?
    I have this set in my app descriptor:
    <requestedDisplayResolution>high</requestedDisplayResolution>

    1. It works fine in AIR 3.6,  3.7 and 3.8.
    2. Yes, see code below.
    3. I'm testing on a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro running OS X 10.8.5.
    Test code:
    package

    import flash.display.StageAlign;
    import flash.display.StageScaleMode;
    import flash.media.StageWebView;
    import flash.geom.Rectangle;

    public class StageWebViewExample extends Sprite
        private var webView:StageWebView = new StageWebView();
        public function StageWebViewExample()

            stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;

  • [AS-CS5] Comparison between text style range and character style

    Hi,
    It's been a while since I'm not coming on this forum ...
    I'm looking to make a comparison between a "text style range" and a character style.
    I have no problems, except for the comparison of "fonts".
    myCurrentText = text for char…
    theStyle = character style id…
    I try:
           if (applied font of myCurrentText ≠ applied font of theStyle) then set theCharDifference to 1
    The selected text give me:
           font "Minion Pro        Italic" of application "Adobe InDesign CS5.5"
    and the character style:
           "Minion Pro"
    I try "set theTextFont to font of applied font of myCurrentText" -> Error
    This is my script (it's too long to post here) <http://db.tt/BLoGPiN>.
    Loot at the "on CheckCharacterDifference(myCurrentText, theStyle)"
    TIA.

    I've written this, but I do not know if it covers all cases ...

  • Battery life comparison between 1.0.2 and 1.1.1

    I had to have Apple Care send me a replacement phone because of battery issues.
    I received the replacement phone, and interestingly, it still had the 1.0.2 firmware on it.
    If enough people are interested here, I can run a fairly scientific test to see if there's any difference between 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 in regard to battery life.
    I could leave the 1.0.2 software on it, charge it fully, then at 10 pm, put it in a specific place in my house, then see what the battery is at @ 7 am. Then, the next day, I can update to 1.1.1 and do exactly the same thing with the same settings.
    But if the battery issue has been put to rest, or if people think this isn't a scientific test at all I don't want to waste my time.

    Your post is helpful in that it points out that it'd be a very difficult thing to do a scientific test that proves anything.
    In your usage, you left out surfing the web, which I do quite avidly. I also check my email much more frequently (every 30 minutes, as I've said). I can't test for surfing the web while I'm sleeping.
    Your saying that updates have nothing to do with the battery is not at all a scientific case study and has very little resonance, but it's great that in your personal experience you haven't seen a degradation in battery life. A bug can rear it's ugly head in many different places, and your usage of the phone may not hit it if in fact there is one.
    Just as an endless loop in a program can cause a computer's CPU to spike if an uncommon set of events leads to it, something could be happening with the phone for some users who are using their phone in a specific way.
    So, having said that, I think I might've answered my own question in that there might not be any scientific way to do a test.

  • Difference between standard report S_ALR_87011963 and the custom report

    Hi Friends,
    My client requires a report which displays the acquisition and depreciation values of assets. Actually the requirement is to display all the values except planned depreciation.
    Therefore we are taking the values only from the table ANLP. However the values in this report is not matching with that of the standard. In the standard report the Current Book Value should be selected to avoid planned depreciation. Am i right??
    So once the CBV is checked the standard report will display only the posted values for a period.
    But we are getting a huge difference in the depreciation value between the two reports.
    Please help me out on this.
    Regards,
    Prasad

    I think your client requires to see Gross asset value and Deon posted in the report for all the years (not for current year only).  If that is the case, current book value = APC - Depn posted earlier, so it gives wrong result.
    Ex  : Asset acquired in 2006 ; APC = 1000$ ; Depn posted in 2006 : 100$, so current book value is 900$.
    So, I would suggest to have a look at the logical data base ADA or use ANLC, ANLV, ANLQ, etc or ANL* and search for the relavant tables required for your purpose.
    regards
    S

  • Difference between standard selection screen and selection screen

    hi guyz,
    im asking this because in the table D010SINF there are two fields  sdate and idate which has different dates in it for some programs and same dates for some..bit confused:(
    thanks

    hi BrightSide
    standard Selection means
    suppose if you are using parameters means system defaultly generate one screen under the Screen Number 1000
    Selection Screen means you are creating a screen using
    stament SElection-Screen begin of screen 100..
    this is the difference whatever the screen other than '1000' is selection Screen, where as 1000 is Standard Selection Screen

  • Can't get a comparison between a folder name and a string to work

    Dear community,
    I have a really simple ExtendScript-example that I just can't get to work and I have no idea what could be wrong. I'm trying to write a script that goes through all the items in the project panel and stores references to all the folders which names are like "layer1", "layer2", and so on, in an array. This is the code that should alert 3 times in my case, but it doesn't alert once..
    for (var i=1; i<=app.project.numItems; i++)
        if ((app.project.item(i) instanceof FolderItem) && (app.project.item(i).name == "layer"+i))
            alert("found folder = " + app.project.item(i).name);
    Inside the project in the root-directory there are 2 comps and 3 folders named 'layer1', 'layer2' and 'layer3' - so I should see 3 alerts when executing the above script. For testing-purposes I changed the second part of the if-statement to a 'static' value like so:
    .. && (app.project.item(i).name == "layer1"))  --> then it works! But I need a dynamic solution..
    Thanks very much for ANY help in advance!
    Greetings,
    Gilbert

    I just tried the code and it only alerted once for me. The issue with your code is that it requires the "Layer" named folders to always be the first x items in the project file. So what is happening for you is that...
    If any item appears before the first "Layer" folder then you are effectively comparing random names to each other that will never match.
    ItemSomethingElse
    RandomFolder                 == Layer1     (false)
    Layer1                              == Layer2     (false)
    Layer2                              == Layer3     (false)
    Layer3                              == Layer4     (false)
    Layer4                              == Layer5     (false)
    ItemSomethingElse
    What you need to do to keep it dynamic:
    1) Gather instances of all the folders in your project into an array.
    2) Loop through that array checking for indexOf "Layer".
    3) If there is a match...
    4) Compare that name in another loop. You'll have to determine the max number to loop through for your search, like 25 or 50 or something that won't loop forever.
    5) If a Layer# match is found then run your alert.
    ItemSomethingElse
    RandomFolder                 indexOf("Layer")     (false, do not add)
    Layer1                              indexOf("Layer")     (true, add instance to folderArray)
    Layer2                              indexOf("Layer")     (true, add instance to folderArray)
    Layer3                              indexOf("Layer")     (true, add instance to folderArray)
    Layer4                              indexOf("Layer")     (true, add instance to folderArray)
    ItemSomethingElse
    So something like this should work:
    var folderArray = new Array();
    //Loop through project grabbing folders with layer in the name
    for (var i=1; i<=app.project.numItems; i++){
         var curItem = app.project.item(i);
         if(curItem instanceof FolderItem && curItem.name.indexOf("layer") != (-1)){
              folderArray[folderArray.length] = curItem;
    //Set cap for number appended to "layer"
    var cap = 25;
    var curName;
    var folderArrayLength = folderArray.length;
    //Loop through new "layer" array
    for(var l=0; l<folderArrayLength; l++){
         for(var c=1; c<cap; c++){
              //Dynamic name
              curName = "layer"+c.toString();
              //Current folder name
              folderName = folderArray[l].name;
              //Compare them, alert if the match
              if(folderName == curName){
                   alert("found folder = " + folderArray[l].name);
                   break;//End comparison once found

  • Comparison between constants in class and interface

    Hi,
    I have recently read an article which says it is a better use of your memory if you declare constants in an Interface rather than in a Class. Can any one explain this is more detail? Have a great day.
    Thank you,
    npaila

    @ricardo_moral
    Hm ...
    we are talking of constants in this topic - constants are always final, otherwise it would not be garanteed, that they cannot change. Also we are not talking of holding a copy of this constant field in a class, we are talking of directly referring to this static final field, regardless if it is declared in an interface or in a class.
    I prefer using an interface - my reason is that I can use it the same way, I can use a class, which declares this constant - via qualifier - AND I can implement it, if I want to - so, I follow the swing route and declare constants, which are shared by many classes, in an interface - but I implement it only there, where these constants are heavily used.

  • Performance end to end testing and comparison between MPLS VPN and VPLS VPN

    Hi,
    I am student of MSc Network Security and as for my project which is " Comparison between MPLS L3 VPN and VPLS VPN, performance monitoring by end to end testing " I have heard a lot of buzz about VPLS as becoming NGN, I wanted to exppore that and produce a comparison report of which technology is better. To accomplish this I am using GNS3, with respect to the MPLS L3 VPN lab setup that is not a problem but I am stuck at the VPLS part how to setup that ? I have searched but unable to find any cost effective mean, even it is not possible in the university lab as we dont have 7600 series
    I would appreciate any support, guidence, advice.
    Thanks
    Shahbaz

    Hi Shahbaz,
    I am not completely sure I understand your request.
    MPLS VPN and VPLS are 2 technologies meant to address to different needs, L3 VPN as opposed as L2 VPN. Not completely sure how you would compare them in terms of performance. Would you compare the performance of a F1 racing car with a Rally racing car?
    From the ISP point of view there is little difference (if we don't want to consider the specific inherent peculiarities of each technology) , as in the very basic scenarios we can boil down to the following basic operations for both:
    Ingress PE impose 2 labels (at least)
    Core Ps swap top most MPLS label
    Egress PE removes last label exposing underlying packet or frame.
    So whether the LSRs deal with underlying L2 frames or L3 IP packets there is no real difference in terms of performance (actually the P routers don't even notice any difference).
    About simulators, I am not aware of anyone able to simulate a L2 VPN (AtoM or VPLS).

    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB flash storage1
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2
    $1,699.00
    Apple Care ($249)
    15-inch: 2.4GHz
    with Retina display
    2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.4GHz

    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)2
    $2,199.00
    No Apple Care
    I want to use the Mac mainly for running Parallels(virtual Windows), making spreedsheets, flowcharts, presentations, taking notes, surfing web, watching videos, minor photo editing, etc.
    I plan to use this Mac for at least 3 years.
    Do you guys think Retina MBP Pro 13-inch with 2.6GHz dual-core processor and with NO dedicated graphics card will suffice my need for the next 3 years ?
    Or Do I need a dedicated Nvidia grapics card with Quad-Core power ?
    Thanks!

    Hi clintonfrombirmingham
    Are you suggesting this because I plan to use this for 3 years or because of the tasks that I plan to use it for. The price difference is steep. With apple care, another 250
