Comparison of Apple, Blurb, and MyPublisher photo books

I put together three photo books with the same 75 pictures -- one directly from Aperture to Apple, one from Blurb, and one from MyPublisher.
For MyPublisher, I used their super high-gloss paper and the lay-flat pages to let them show off their top of the line.
In short, the Apple Book is the best. The colors are correct and the exposures are perfect. The layout is very customizable and easy to use.
The Blurb book would look great if it wasn't compared to the other two. The color is a bit greenish in all the photos, which shows up most in the skintones, of course. The customizable themes and pages are great; the "ornaments" on the pages are cool.
The MyPublisher book also looks great, but (1) the photos are all a bit dark and (2) the page layouts are very simplistic and hard to customize. The background colors for each page are very simplistic (i think I could have made them more subtle with a lot of work), which renders the book a little too primary-school-ish, if you know what I mean.
The prices were all very similar (50 bucks, more or less, including shipping, for a 35-page book), but I paid extra for the MyPublisher high gloss and lay-flat options (about 72 bucks total). And on your first order, MyPublisher sends you two books for the price of one. So that's cool.
All in all, I'm very impressed with the Apple book. In addition to the best photo quality of the three, it's the only one that both prints your pictures on the actual cover and adds a dust jacket with the pictures on it. They also send a cardboard "sleeve" for the book, which is a nice touch.
These pics were from 2010, so I know where I'm sending my BIG 2011 photo book -- Apple, direct from Aperture.

For future books you might consider doing what I do: create a separate library for each book andcopy the photos for the book from your working library to the book library with iPhoto Library Manager.
When the book is completed and ordered burn the library package to a CD, DVD or external HD to archive it so it's available for editing and reordering at a later date if needed.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

Can I make and order photo books using iPhoto on my iPad?

Locking and unlocking photo books

When I creat a photo book and walk away from it for a while, I cannot get back into and continue my work. It automatically locks the book and thinks I am done. How can I lock and unlock? I want to be able to spend a few days working on a book but so far I have to complete it in one sitting. Also, when I had a lower version of Iphoto I could lock and unlock without a problem.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What do you mean by "lock" and "unlock". Never heard of that. Do you mean open? What happens when you close iPhoto and then reopen it again. Can't you click on the book icon in the Source pane and get it back open to work on it?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

it has been a while since we have last spoke, I would like to let you know, I am still working on getting used to the switch from windows to a Mac/Apple system. I do have a new question for you, I did purchase In Design CS5.5 through journeyed.com through Cuyahoga Community College of which I attend as a student, is there a way to purchase an online book through iTunes to learn that as well? Also, you know me, the struggling student, I would also, when and if the book can be purchased through the iTunes, would need to know if you do know of a much easier book for struggling students like myself and at a reasonable price as well for the In Design CS5.5 program. Our campus bookstore had closed early, and, so did the colleges library and our local library here where I do live, so, I cannot go to either place to purchase a book or to take out a book, plus cash funds are low at this moment as well but, I do have money left on the iTunes account to use, if it can be used. So, can it be used, the iTunes money, towards finding a low priced online book? I am in great need of assistance as I have a project due for my one course for this Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

Creating and ordering photo book

I would like to use my ipad photos to create a photo book for my mother for Christmas. I need to have an app that walks me through this. Last year I used my PC and Walgreens but this year I have no pc and Walgreens does not support nonflash. What do I do? Can anyone help? I looked at the iPhoto app but it talks about using a Mac and not Ipad. My mother is 83 and needs to hold the book in her hands. Thanks bunches! Sallie

Calendar Crashes, iPhoto 6.0.3, and Missing Photos, Books, etc.

Last week I was creating a calender in iPhoto 6.0.2. It crashed twice while I was working on it. I submitted the crash logs to Apple and went on working with the calendar. Everything seemed fine.
Last night I upgraded to iPhoto 6.0.3 via Software Update. I checked permissions afterwards, then launched iPhoto 6.0.3 to work on my calendar. ALL of my photos since December 2004 were missing and I also had no books, albums, or calendars in the left side pane. I tried rebuilding the library and nothing changed. I have not yet tried to "recover" lost images.
I'm not sure if the iPhoto 6.0.2 calendar crash did this or the iPhoto 6.0.3 update, or the combination of the two. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get back all of this information? From what I've gathered, it looks like I should try iPhoto Library Manager. That seems to help some people. At the very least I hope to get all my Film Rolls back, but I would like all the other stuff as well.
Yes, I should have a more recent backup than I do, but Apple also needs to make the iPhoto Library data files more robust so it's easier to rebuild this information!

That did indeed recover all my "missing" photos. I guess there just isn't anyway to recover albums, calendards, greeting cards, slideshows, etc. Is that true?
I think I will revert back to my last backup and manually add the 10 or so rolls that I have taken since then. At least that way the only thing I lose is the calendar I was working on during the crash in iPhoto 6.0.2. I also plan on filing a bug on iPhoto with the crash log and the information about it corrupting my iPhoto Library. If iPhoto Library Manager can recover all my photos, then iPhoto itself should definitely be able to!
One other oddity I noticed was the iPhoto Library Manager would say it was importing Film Roll "Joss's Birthday", but then it would NOT actually use that as the name of the Film Roll in the rebuilt library. I figured since it obviously saw the name, it should use it. Maybe I had the preferences configured wrong.

How can i import and order photo books from older iPhoto versions?

I have made a photobook which i have not ordered at apple yet. It's on another macbook still running iphoto 07 (unable to update iphoto, because to old for Mavericks)... Somehow i can't import this album on my laptop running iphoto 9.5.1 and order it from here...

Read again - the word "import" does not appear in either answeer - you never ever import one iPhoto library into another one
books do not actually exist - they are simply database entries - so you have to move the entire iphoto library
1 - rename it on the source machine
2 - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
3 - drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac
4 - depress the opeion key and launch iPhoto on the new mac
5 - select the library with the book, convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward

So, when you are viewing photos, via home share form my main mac, onto my apple tv, what does to mean when there is no photo, but a black box with a question mark within. Believe me I have searched these forums!
But this was all because of the main issue, which is "embarrassing" photos I have deleted from EVERY device I own, still show up in the albums on apple tv. So, in the light of recent events with photos popping up everywhere, if they're not deleted where ELSE can they be! Anyway. again I have searched these forums and this subject does pop up from time to time but Ive never seen a definitive solution! Help! Driving me crazy!

I don't think you can have the app on the external drive but maybe you can have the "data". The app will likely need to reside in the "applications" and serve to the data.....

I have photo stream setup on iPhoto on my MacBook Pro and on 2 new iPhones that have the same AppleID as the MacBook Pro. However only one iPhone will stream photos to iPhoto on the MacBook Pro. All these devices were purchased in the last 2 weeks. What setting is wrong?

Photostream only syncs photos over Wi-Fi, make sure you are connected to Wi-Fi to begin with.
Photostream only syncs when the camera app is closed, ensure it is closed.
Photostream only syncs when the battery is above 20%, try recharging the device
Try disabling photo stream on your device (settings > iCloud), restarting your device and then re-enabling photo stream.
If this doesn't help you may need to reset photo stream. You can do this at icloud.com by clicking on your name in the top right corner and then the advanced settings in the pop-up dialogue box that appears.
Note: disabling photostream and re-enabling it will result in any photos that are currently in the photostream album on your device, that are older than 30 days old, not being added back.

Apple TV and .mac photos

I'm having problems connecting my AppleTV to my .mac account. All of our albums or protected and require you to login to view the images.
Does AppleTV only support public photo albums on .mac?

most likely the same as Flickr access.
ie as you don't actually log into any service, you are a "guest" user and as such can only view "public" images.

TS1135 Cannot process the Photo Book; it fails always at the very last stage with "error occurred while uploading on of your files. Pls check your network connection and click Retry..." Tried at 12 times and no joy! Can anyone help?

Can anyone help with the Photo Book process? I have tried at least a dozen times and the Photo Book always fails at the very last stage of the process. I ordered Buy Book, it assembles the book and files are transferred until the very last moment... it says " An error occurred while uoloading one of your files. Please check your network connection and click Retry to resend your files." It fails every time, any advice? My server is TalkTalk which may explain everything !! ?? Help.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and order from there.
Also make a PDF file of your book according to this Apple Document, iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it, before you order to check for errors. Keep that file to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.
