Comparison of FCP v. Avid v. Adobe, PLZ Read!

Firstly I wanted to commemorate the people of this Final Cut discussion board for being very helpful and for posting interesting and insightful questions and answers. I am planning to purchase, along with a friend, a sony HD camera and as well as some plethora of professional video editing software. And I love my first and relatively new Apple product, a powerbook. I am convinced that the Apple Final Cut Studio will be the best software choice for our intermediate level of editing however my friend argues that he either wants Adobe Video Bundle http://www.adobe.com/products/bundles/video_bundle.html and or Avid Liquid Pro 7.

So I was wondering if I could have many opinions from people who have done comparisons previously or have worked with both, or why you choose Final cut studio. I realize most opinions will be in the biased favor of the Apple product for obvious reasons but I still feel many of you can give very insightful opinions. Let's set aside the factor of cost and just compare strictly on features and software quality.

Ok I accept that budget is in mind (just curioius, if it was not a matter what would you recommend as the best?) A budget is not so much a factor as much as hardware. I already have a powerbook and I wish to stick with it (1.67 G4) and I know a desktop would be much better but I want to stay mobile. I will use a external HD and if at times I really need to I can borrow a friend's dual 2.7 G5.
1) So budget would be around $1,000-$2,500, training will be free via art school friend and University program workshops (both free)
2) I have not cross compared on price but rather slightly on performance. I want to aim for what performs the best of the choices and then try and save up the funds. However I want my software to be very high tech for future (ie, HD, HDDVDs or Bluray?) And will put funds towards such future devices.
3)end product will currently be DVD and intErnet streaming video (over web not LAN) but like I said I would like to eventually offer HD DVD or Bluray when possible.
4) You have just thrown me for a spin, I thought adobe products were cross platform?! You are saying they are not? I am looking this up but if that is the case, then adobe is pretty much out of question. I am pretty sure however that Adobe products ARE cross platform...
5) I have not gone fully indepth to each but I have looked at broad features of letting me: fully edit native HD, have a plethora of filters and effects, create professional DVD menus, green screen capable (most are), multicam (2-5 cams),
6) compatability for editing I would prefer to be Apple only, as for playing and streaming I would like both platforms to view. Although if Avid is better than I am open to using that over apple platform
7) I have been really looking into the FCstudio at tutorials and disscussion board and it seems very good. My #1 pick, though like I have said, I am not fully expereienced
8) I realize all pro apps have steep learning curves but I have workshops for each at my disposal along with friends who are familar with them. I am also pretty tech savvy and have taken and successfully mastered photoshop and dreamweaver courses in past years.
9) I do not entirely understand but I think you are asking will I upgrade my current editing platform (my powerbook) in later years? The answer is yes probably in 4-5 years.
Please feel free to list your factors in comparing and contrasting the advantages or choices you picked for going with Final cut pro

You need to be more specific about which software applications you're using, the versions and what happens when you try to open them.
It would also be nice if you could include which model MacBook Air you're using.

FCP to AVID

I know theres software i can purchase which supposably will transfer an fcp timeline to avid, but i just dont want to deal with xml mle confusion, its just not worth it.
Basically i have to export a video for an avid system to add graphics, and then bring it back into my system.
Footage within video:
- 720x480 Interger (little endian) timecode, Apple ProIO vout 2vuy imdc [im not quite sure what all that is]
- 720x480 Uncompressed-10bit
- 1080i HDV
I usually export in Uncomp-10bit, quality seems to be the best, despite the size.
My question is what format (FCP to AVID)do i export my video at, while preserving as much quality as possible. And reverse.
I hear that its much easier the other way around, fcp allowing any format on their timeline, but whats the best format to export (AVID to FCP) preserving as much quality as possible.

Ah...young editors. I was there once. Learn the basics...how to do EDLs, even though they are old...they are still used. Learn about the offline/online process...even though it is old, it is still used. Know what it means to have bars and tone and show start at 1:00:00:00, and the difference between drop and non-drop frame timecode. Video levels a must.
ANYWAY...by lossless I mean virtually no loss in quality. That is what you are striving for.
FOX news still on Avids? Well, that's the news biz.

Background:
* just trying to decide what to go for re video editing app with more features than iMovie
* last time I'd tried Adobe Premiere Elements on my MacBook (but it was before I had an SSD) the performance was not good - it was sluggish to the point I really didn't want to use it
* so this question is just about whether in general FCP X performs better on a Mac (you'd think it would no, as it's made/optimized for a Mac)
My MacBook:
Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Elements is essentially an amateur app and Premiere a professional one similar to the discontinued Final Cut Pro 7.
FCP X is a radical new approach to editing which like Marmite, you either love or hate.
It is probably between the 2 in capabitlity but much closer to Premiere.
Some might say it was better than Premiere, whilst other long standing broadcast editors would disagree.
It all depends on your standpoint and I am trying to give an unbiased appraisal.
Some of the techniques it uses are way ahead of all other apps and this is what worries people who have an established way of working, though as I mentioned in another post, there are a few omissions which have upset those editors.
Some might say (echoes of Jeremy Clarkson) that FCP X is the most advanced editing app on the planet albeit with a few teething troubles.

FCP and Avid

Does anyone know if you can use both FCP and Avid in the same MacBook Pro?
Right now I have FCP in my MacBook, and I'd like to ad Avid Media Composer to the same
MBP, but don't know if I'll encounter compatibility issues, or if both in the same system will
screw up something.
I'm not planning on using both programs at the same time.
I'll have one program closed while I use the other.

I run both on my Powerbook G4. Just gotta make sure that the OS version and QT version is supported by both platforms.
I have OS 10.4.11 and QT 7.4.1. Running FCP 6.0.2 and Avid Media Composer 2.8.3.

Digibeta to minidv: FCP to Avid

Hello,
Here's my situation.
I work in a television facility which is largely based on Avid. However, I'd prefer to cut on FCP, which is on my home computer. This will save me both time and money. The main problem is that I get most of my source material on digibeta and don't have a digibeta deck at home. I'm figuring the best way to do this is have minidv dubs made from the digimasters for loading at home. I'll still have to online and output the footage in an Avid though.
I have a few questions....
Will the timecode be preserved on my minidv dubs? This will be crucial of hi-rezing.
If so, What is the best way to get my sequence back into Avid?
Given my situation, is there a better way to do this?
Doable, or not worth the hassle?

in answer to your questions.
Yes the timecode will be preserved as long as the dubs are correctly made by your vt area (ext t/code. proper ref ) AND you digitise them into your setup with a vt capable of replaying that timecode.(I use a sony DSR1800)
Once you've done your offline in FCP export an edl and conform in Avid from the DIgibetas, all should be fine in theory. (you may want to look at automatic duck for your FCP to AVID path though as this will take your sequence across)
Alternatively, get hold of a Kona card and digitise straight off the digibetas, cross converting to dv resolution, into FCP and follow the first path back to the AVID, this will save you having to make dv dubs.

Export settings for sequence from FCP to Avid PC

Hi,
Please can someone give me the best export settings/codecs to use if I need to export a FCP sequence with clips shot on XDCam EX1, 1920x1080i, 35 mbs at the least quality loss possible so that it can be imported into an Avid on PC for titling, effects and other bits added? My on-line editor is on Avid PC.

Hee....missed that final sentence somehow.
So...offlining imported footage on FCP that you will online in Avid? What is there to online? You imported at full resolution. Must be color correction.
OK then...you edit in FCP from imported XDCAM EX footage...and you intend to go to Avid for the final color correct and titling. Did you plan for this? Test this? because I am pretty sure that the QT files that were created when you imported with the transfer tool won't work on a PC. Unless you tested and they did. But it appears that they don't as you are asking how to get them there.
Did you not ask this question when you started this show? That is ALWAYS something you do. If you plan on doing a certain workflow, you have to make sure that the workflow in question will work. Offline and online from tape is fairly simple, as you can recapture from the tape...timecode being the big thing there. But this is IMPORTED footage. Full clips, and I don't see how you can import only what is used in a sequence.
This issue, coupled with FCP to Avid...and Avid on a PC no less. Well. Find a codec you can export from FCP that the Avid can read (this will require testing), then MEDIA MANAGE the footage to that codec. Hmm....but then how will the Avid read the FCP project file to reconnect to the footage?
Nope...I stand by my original answer. Output to XDCAM disk and recapture, or to HDCAM or HDCAM SR tape and recapture.

If you want to run Adobe apps, make sure you have the maximum RAM and plenty of available hard disk space. Given the typical internal drive sizes of the Mini, this would mean investing in one or two large external drives. Photoshop and InDesign only work well if there is a very large chunk of space available as a scratch disk. Some recommend dedicating a drive just for scratch space, if you are working with large, complex Photoshop files or large InDesign projects.

How to set PDF as default printer? (adobe 9 reader)

I have the free version of adobe 9 reader, I know I can set as default the pdf printer and that way its how i've always know how to create a pdf. I dont know why when I chose print from a word document it doesnt show the pdf printer it only shows XPS word document and fax. How can i set the pdf printer as default??? please help i know its possible thats how i have always use it.

We are getting the following error "there is a problem with adobe acrobat/reader. if it is running please exit and try again. (523.523)" and a gray screen appears (Image not viewable) with multiple users. We are using Adobe Reader XI (11.0.05) and (11.0.06). The current workaround is to log off the website and log back in. Once the user logs back in, the pdf will appear. However it occurs anywhere from 2-8 times in a day. Anyone else having this issue or know of another workaround? Any suggestion with how to fix? Please help!!

Please let me know the version of Adobe Acrobat/Reader & operating system installed on your computer?
Also, try this:-
Launch Adobe Reader/Acrobat.
From the menu, choose Edit -> preferences -> General
Uncheck the option for "Enable Protected Mode at startup"
Restart the Adobe Reader and web browser.

Chrome - Adobe-Acrobat/Reader can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser.

I can't view PDF files via Chrome (it works on Internet Explorer but I prefer Chrome) - the error below has arisen recently on Chrome, though I can't see what has changed.

The Adobe-Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your Web Browser and try again."
I have looked through Forum articles on similar errors and have tried the following(text copied from other Forum entries)
Repair Adobe Acrobat (from Acrobat)

Configure Acrobat as a helper application: Choose Edit > Preferences., Select Internet on the left., Deselect Display PDF In Browser Using [Acrobat application], and then click OK.Quit Acrobat or Reader

None has solved the problem. However it still works ok with IE. But I want to stick with Chrome because I find IE is so slow!
I am using Vista, with Adobe Acrobat standard 9.5.2 and Google Chrome version 23.0.1271.64 m which is marked on Chrome as 'up to date'

I think I have discovered the answer to my own question!
I have disabled Adobe Reader plug-in, and can now see PDFs in Chrome.
(Steps: Chrome Menu, Settings option, Click Advanced Settings link, then Content Settings button, then select Disable Individual Plug-Ins, and a list of plug-ins is offered to enable or disable).
I then get a different result depending on whether or not Chrome PDF viewer is enabled - with it enabled I see the PDF document in Chrome, or with it disabled then the option is offered to download it, but either way I can get it it via Chrome without having to run Internet explorer in another browser window.

Since Lion doesn't support Power PC... how do I open Adobe acrobat reader?

power pc is an old cpu type made by ibm that apple used to put in their rather old macs
if you downloaded an acrobat reader which require power pc then you downloaded the wrong! and possible dangerous version of acrobat reader download the correct one if you must from adobes site
but osx support displaying pdf files without you installing that program
