Comparison to Nike Triax Elite HRM/SDM

Well I am a gadget freak and I am always looking for a new gimmick to get me motivated to train. I ran out and picked up a Nike+iPod sportskit to compare it to my Nike Triax Elite.
The Nike Triax uses similar technology. A larger foot pod with replaceable battery that clips to your shoe laces. The data is tranmitted to a watch which also records you heart rate being transmitted from a chest strap. The advertised accuracy is similar. I believe the accelorometer is not solid state as I can hear some rattle back and forth when I shake the triax device. It can be calibrated like the iPod device.
Unfortunately, the last time I calibrated the Triax device, I was 25 lbs lighter and was training for an Ironman. I had an injury one year ago and have not been running for the past year.
So with my first outing I decided to run with both systems. The iPod device was velcroed to the front of my laces on the right shoe and the Triax device was on my left shoe. Not suprisingly there was a significant difference in the measured distance 2.94 miles for the Triax and 3.21 miles for the iPod. I think it is just as likely that the Triax is off since the calibration was done under quite different conditions.
The iPod was a pleasure to use. I liked being able to push a button to listen to my progress rather than to scroll through several screens on my watch. However the data points where not at all reflective of my actual run. Because I was significantly out of shape, I was walking at intervals. The graph on the Nike site was smoothed out to a continuous curve.
I will post more when I have done a few more runs and measured my route.

Here is the graph of my walk/run. I went back and measured the route by car. It came out to 3.1 miles.

Triax Elite graph (pace is blue and heart rate is brown):
http://stevendn.smugmug.com/photos/82625302-L.png
you can see that the Triax plots many more data points. If you run intervals, I don't know how well the Nike+iPod will work. The Triax is great for this application as you can create your own custom interval workout complete with prompts based either on time or heart rate recovery. The software is even Mac compatible unlike the Polar offering.
I will probably continue to run with both devices as I like the audible feedback and I enjoy running with music. They do not seem to interfere with each other.
Hopefully this will help motivate me to get back in shape after a long break. As you can see from my heart rate, I have a long way to go.

  • Nike Triax Elite HRM/SDM and Mac OS 10.4

    Hello,
First off, I'm sorry if this isn't the proper place for this question. Please feel free to move this topic or let me know where I should post it.
I've got a Nike Triax Elite HRM/SDM (heart rate and distance monitor).
I had been downloading the information to a PowerMac G4 laptop running OS 10.3. The Triax software was written for Mac OS 9 and I could use it running the virtual OS 9 OS machine. Now I'm using a MacBook Pro running and this is no longer possible.
Does anyone know how (or even if) there is new OS 10.4 compatible software for the Triax? If so where can I get it?
    Thanks.
    Jim

For anyone that's interested, I found this in a Yahoo group:
    Nike Elite support
My experience with the phone support was good. I had immediately a knowledgeable person on the phone. He explained that there are two versions for the Mac, one that runs in Classic mode in OSX, the newer one that is OSX native. He pointed me to the download page, and also offered to send me the CD, which I found not necessary. He also mentioned that there is no "Help - About" menu that displays the version number, but that the version difference is visible in the calendar.
Calendar background: grey means V.2 (OSX native)
Calendar background: white means V.1 (OSX classic mode)
I will say that initially I had the feeling he wanted to brush me off with the "there is only one version which is 'OS X compatible'. But then his explanations became much better. He may have found the information in their knowledge base while we were talking.

  • Colouring a fabric - colour & texture accuracy

    Hello,
I have a piece of fabric that I'm trying to colour with a variety of different light & dark colours (blues, yellows, reds, black, white, grey, etc). The fabric colour that I'm trying to fill is a light grey which shows the texture (shadows, pattern, etc) of the fabric. In the layers pallet I have the fabric layer set to multiply and placed above the colour layer so that the colour comes through.
My problem is that I'm having some difficulty in colouring in the fabric. With lighter colours it's not a problem, but darker colours appear to saturate the selection too much which results in a loss of texture definition - the cracks in the texture appear that they are filled with paint. At the moment I have been playing with a combination of fabric layers set at different blend modes & opacities: multiply, screen & overlay which works to a certain extent but I'm not happy with the realism of the results especially for the darker colours.
With that said I have 2 questions:
    1. Does anyone have any good experience with colouring selections which maintain colour & texture accuracy (to see what I mean, design a shoe at NikeID.com). You can see how they colour a lace in a variety of light & dark colours accurately (accurate colours while maintaining good texture). More generally, what's the 'best' approach here to blend (or some other method) the full spectrum of light to dark colours?
    2. Ideally, what colour should the underlying fabric be? (white, grey, black?) And why? I notice that it's easy to colour a predominately white fabric with light colours but increasingly difficult to colour the selection the darker the target fill is.
    Anything welcome.
    Thank you,
    Marv.

Hey Zeno. Thanks for that. I just tested your suggestion with a Nike lace - trying to replicate their results. Colour works well for light colours but increasingly becomes desaturated the darker the colour applied.
Through a quick trial and error I have managed to create a fill effect quite similar to Nike. I'm using their white lace as the test with a target of a dark blue.
    There are 4 layers:
1st: Lace selection with 100% black fill set on normal set at 33% opacity
2nd: Lace selection with blue colour fill set on overlay
3rd: Shoe layer set of linear light
4th: Lace section with 100% black fill set on normal with 33% opacity.
I used linear burn for the white fabric with a 100% black layer under set at 33% opacity. This actually gives quite a good result for the dark blue. My only quibble is that its reflecting slightly too much light in places visibly seen with white pixels in my version in close zoom. In comparison with Nike, their pixels are a light blue.
Perhaps the lace colour should be darker so less white comes through and appears more natural? I tried to tone down the contrast, but this spoiled the overall effect.

  • My Nike  HRM is not working with my 7th gen Nano

I got the 7th Gen Nano a few weeks ago and so far I like it very much.  I had a Polar HRM and discovered that my existing HRM transmitter would not
work with the Nano.  I got the HRM transmitter that says it works with Nike+ and it's not working.  Any suggestions?

When I plug it in iTunes recognizes my iPod, syncs it, but then the iPod library is grey.
If the iPod's Music list is greyed out, that usually means the iPod uses automatic syncing.  You cannot change anything directly on the iPod, because you are not manually managing content.  You let iTunes manage the content, based on the settings on the iPod's Music settings screen.
Select the iPod in iTunes.  In iTunes 12, click the "device button" on the horizontal bar (its icon looks like the device).  The iPod's "management" screen comes up, showing the iPod's Summary settings view.  Is the box for Manually manage music checked or not checked?  If it's not checked, you are using automatic syncing.  In the iPod's sidebar, under Settings, click Music to show the iPod's Music settings screen and set up (or update) automatic syncing for songs.

  • Is new software around for Ipod Nano 5G with the Nike sensor and Polar wearlink HeartRateMonitor to get spoken feedback on heartrate-zone, so you get a warning if your heartrate is higher or lower than the predefined range.

    I have:
Ipod Nano 5G with Nike+ sensor and Polar wearlink Heartrate monitor:
works fine, linking is easy, but....
Software is rather minimal: Heartrate is on the screen and you get feedback when the center-button is touched.
To get better results, more functions would be useful, like defining a heartrate zone (like Polar`s own-zone) and automatic spoken feedback if the heartrate is out of the pre-defined range. Also automatic spoken feedback on actual and average heartrate every pre-defined time-interval would be very useful: like the spoken feedback on distance and actual pace I get on my Iphone with Nike+GPS
    Anyone have any suggestions ?

I have the same issue! I purchased a nano 6th, polar hrm so I could run and receive spoken feedback when my heart rate was outside my preset zone.  My suunto t3 used to beep when outside the preset zones.  Automatic, periodic beeps or spoken feedback is the most important information to receive during exercise. I hope apple can update the software to add this simple yet critical feature.

  • Nano G6 needs  reveiver plug-in for wearing polar wearlink+nike+?

Only what i want is to checking heart-rate while working out.
If i buy a "Polar WearlinkNike" transmitter for checking heart rate when workout at gym.
Do i also need to buy the receiver(of nike+ipod SportKit) to plug into the dock connector on iPod nano G6 or G5??
    PS.
I don't want and it doesn't need the nike+apple wireless sensor(the red&white round-shape one) in my shoes. (i don't wear Nike at all)

You do need to plug in the receiver in the 6G Nano iPod to use the Polar Wearlink+.
I just bought the iPod Nano (6th G, touch nano) and I coupled the Polar HRM Wearlink + in the Nike+ iPod settings. It was actually a non brainer. Plug the receiver in, let the iPod link with the HRM, and done. Same with the sensor in my Nike+ shoe.
Both of them work. I'm so glad to have this come together. The Polar Wearlink+ is cheaper then buying the whole Polar package (with watch etc). Of course, the iPod costs you also 159€, but then you can beam your workouts to the Nike+ website, which is very nice to follow your workouts. When you did the workout, what you did at the moment (run your longest, run the most calories etc).
Now that I tested it just by walking around and have a little run for a few meters, I cannot wait to get it to work.

  • Implement PO, FA, AP without HRMS & INVENTORY (11.5.10)

    Hi,
We are implementing PO, FA & AP as part of P2P impelementation for Bank (v 11.5.10). Can you please let me know if there are any specific things to keep in mind considering there is no plan to implement HRMS & Inventory module in near future.
Also is there any Banking Specific tips for implementing these modules?
Appreciate your help in advance & have great day.
    Ashish

    1) It is possible that a patch changed it or that the user guide you looked at is not the latest version. What difference do you see? I have 25 columns in 11.5.10.2 instance.
    2) Did you follow the suggestions in the user guide http://docs.oracle.com/cd/A85683_01/acrobat/115faug.pdf page 3-27
    3) Did you run Physical Inventory comparison program after loading the records? Read the 10 pages upto 3-37 to find useful hints.

  • GCC Elite 20/600 and Lion

    Hi All
I have a venerable but fully servicable GCC Elite XL 20/600 which I really do not want to scrap.
I am attempting to connect it to my MacBook Pro (late 2011 model) using an ethernet crossover cable. I have the original .ppd file, version 3.31.
Having searched the discussion threads I found this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11530412#11530412
which seemed to provide an answer to my problem. However, once I have completed the steps I get the folowing message:
Unable to verify the printer on your network.
‘192.168.1.10’ may not exist or is unavailable at this time.
Would you still like to create the queue?
I have tried IPP and LPD options in Print & Scan
I have an ethernet router which I could use to make the connection ... but it seems to me that the crossover cable should work.
Does anyone have any idea what I should try next?
    Cheers
    Paul

I have the original CD version 3:33, but with Lion I can not open it ..
I tried to download it from the GCC (GCC-1.img PPD Installer) and there is the same problem, I can not open it (the image should be converted obsolete)
If you would be able to send me the ppd file I would be very grateful

  • Windowsize on Nike+ site-never had problems b4

Now I am unable to scroll to the top of the home page where the login/logout icon is located. Even if I relocate my dock to the side and pull the window down, stuff is still cutoff. Then at least I can login but again can't logout for reason above. It's like content at the top of the page is stuck under my bookmarks bar but I did NOT change any setting anywhere nor do other websites seem to be affected. It's this way in both safari and firefox. Is there a setting somewhere I can double check to make this work for me again? PLEASE help me anyone! Thanks!

Sure, thx. Here is the site. http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/?sitesrc=uslanding When I check other sites for comparison and play w/resizing the window, I notice the content stays put in place but on this one as I try resize, the content on the page moves with the window as if it's anchored within it, thus whatever size I make the window, I can pretty much only access page content I see in the window as opposed to what I can half way see or know is off the top of the window. Hope that makes sense! This is driving me crazy as I'm sure it's something simple or stupid on my part. Or is it possible it's just their site for some odd reason? Thanks again for your help!

  • File Comparison using Shell Programming

    Hi All,
I want to compare two text files using shell programming. The two text files are actually Business Objects output extracted in a text format. The two output files are not in a tabular format and are no way similar in looking. I want to take one file e.g. file1 as an input file and compare each line of file1 with the other file e.g. file2. During comparison I want to extract the differences found in another file and if possible the similar data as well.
Below is how the files will look like
    File 1:

As you can see above the file are not at all matching except for one record UHL1, but its just an example. As an output I would like to have a third file containing all these records, highlighting the differences, and a fourth file where in only the matched records should get populated.
Please post any useful scripts related to the above scenario.
    Many Thanks.

    Nik,
Thanks for that script. Its solving my purpose upto an extent.
Going another level to that example, in cases where in the first column of file 1 is to be compared with second or third column in file 2, what all the changes should be made to your script. For example,
    File 1:
    1       a       APPLICATION=WWAGES      8       9
    2       b       1200301270320099TEST  C E         00000031615            123456

    4       d       APPLICATION=WWAGES      6       7
    5       e       1200301270320099TEST  C E         00000031615            123456
    6       f       1200301276140499TES  P            00000062943            234567

    File 2:

k       12      1200301276140499TES  P            00000062943            234567Now, in the above example First and Second Columns of File 1 are to be compared against Second and First Columns of File 2 respectively. Please see that in file 2, 12 and K are not matching with file1's record 11 and K, so they should not be picked.
Based on the matched columns, will continue comparing rest of the fields for the records.
Please guide me the changes to be done in your script for catering to the above scenario.
    Thanks.

  • Pavilion Elite e9180f freezes, crashes, BSOD

I am one of the many unhappy customers who bought this piece of junk (Pavilion Elite e9180f) and waited too long to return it because in my naivete, I thought it was some kind of simple software issue.  Nope!  It's definitely something wrong with the hardware, because the freezes and crashes have been happening since day 1, right when I took the thing out of the box.
Yeah, the system is fast and runs Windows Vista great, when it's actually WORKING, which is usually only guaranteed for about the first 5 minutes after you power the system on and boot windows.  After that, it's just buying time before it crashes again.  Forget trying to get anything done on this computer.  Forget about asking this PC to play a video or music file without the files "stuttering" during playback.  Even my 7 year old Sony Vaio which is running XP can handle playing an MP3 file without stuttering and crashing!
Like everyone else, the freezes and crashes happen either one of two ways:
    1) The machine begins to "stutter", stutter more, then freeze/crash.  When I say stutter, I mean I move the mouse, the pointer graphic will hesitate on the screen and lag behind.  If you start to play a video or music file, this manifests in an audible "stutter".  The stuttering gets worse and worse as minutes pass until eventually it freezes for good, blasting that 1/50th second moment of audio into infinity.  You have to reboot immediately if you don't want to go deaf or be driven mad.
    2)  I will be doing nothing at the time (example, I close all programs out and leave Windows sitting on the main desktop screen), I'll walk out of the room for a minute, then come back and find I can't move the mouse. This system will often lock-up without any warning!
Sometimes I'll get a BSOD or error screen, sometimes I won't (in which case your only option is to do a cold re-boot.)  When I do get the BSOD, the error is ALWAYS the "did not get a response from the secondary processor" yada yada.  I wish HP would just admit they shipped this model out with a bad processor/motherboard/whatever and do an official recall.  I have owned PCs for the last 13 years and this is the worst and most consistently disappointing experience I have ever had.
What is the hardware issue?  Which part is the lemon part?  The motherboard?  The processor?  The BSODs seem to indicate a bad processor.  I do have the Pegatron Truckee version 1.03 motherboard.  Is that the problem?
P.S.  I have contacted HP on many occasions about this, literally stayed on the phone for hours with "customer support" (according to one HP rep, 80% of their customer service reps are based outside of the United States...good luck getting any "technical" help from them) to no avail.  I did talk to one nice tech support guy in Canada who said "it sounds like your unit has a bad processor", so he had HP send me a box to ship my unit to their repair center so they can replace the processor.  However, I have also had HP reps tell me it could be anything from the memory to the hard drive.  Multiple HP reps claimed to me that they have "received no complaints" about this system.  One guy told me he "thought he got an email last week" regarding "something" about the system, but couldn't remember what it was and he put me on hold while he searched for the email.  He never found it.  What a joke.
EDIT:  Just to clarify, the crashing issue has been happening since day one, but initially I thought it was an issue with Vista.  I had never owned or used Vista before, so I thought maybe Vista was just unstable.  Nope.  I know several people who own Vista and have never experienced these issues.  I have downloaded every update from Microsoft/Windows Update.  I have upgraded to Vista SP2 with all the latest drivers and software for all of my hardware.  No luck.  It is definitely a hardware issue.  Thank god HP's warranty is good for 1 year (I bought my Elite in July).

Unfortunately I have to add my disastrous encounter with HP's E9180F a true lemon HP is selling. I must take some responsibility for not carefully researching this model before I purchased, but I trusted the HP name and got stung- big time.
    The scoundrel  :
HP and its Pavilion Elite e9180f
    Windows 7 64bit
motherboard - Pegatron  Truckee ver 1.03
    BIOS ver  5.22Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
    Memory 9206 MB Ram
As so many others have reported my HP E9180f started locking up and going to BSOD right out of the box. My first freeze-up came when I was doing the Windows update process. At first I didn't think much about it but I started getting random freezes a couple time a day. At that point I went online to see if others had experienced the same problem and perhaps had a fix. What I found was very troubling;  I found extensive documentation describing my exact problems and what was really horrifying was the reports of how ridiculous HP's help services were treating people with the problem. At first I didn't totally believe what I was reading on HP's own customer forum; I do now.
    ·         I've went through the total recovery process three times now, HP techs have spent hours remotely running my computer, (yes it did lock up on them to)
    ·         I had to upgraded the BIOS. (HP tech tried, said he had, but he hadn't)
    ·         I was directed to clear the BIOS (luckily for me I had the tools
    ·         Updated all drivers again and again.
    ·         Next I was asked to remove the video card, memory, and motherboard power cable and reseat them. I declined because I didn't want to give HP any reason to void my HP 2 year House Call Care Pack which covers this unit. When I invited HP to send a service tech out to perform these tasks, they said that house call only covers part replacement, we weren't replacing a part. I couldn't believe what I was told. Are you feeling my frustration?
Keep in mind that each time HP requests that I make changes, they then ask me to test the system, which I did and each time with the same result, BSOD
I'm heading into my fifth week of working with HP to fix this problem. and I still haven't even been able to get my case moved up to a senior case manager, what a joke HP's help process is.
     One conversation I loved was;
HP tech: "I'll have a senior case manager call you within 24 hours."
Skeptical me: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    Silence, no response.
Me again: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    HP tech: "That's an impossibility."
Guess what? The impossibility became reality (I bet you guessed) .
HP's last stall tactic was to have me fax them my proof of purchase and invoice and call back in 24 hours. Where have I heard that before? Apparently nothing can go forward until they receive it. So I faxed them the stuff within 10 minutes, and when I called back 24 hours later, guess what, you're right it wasn't on their system yet. I asked couldn't I be escalated to a senior case manager  (it's apparent that only a senior case manager can do anything). "No," was the tech's reply, "call back again later".
Please if anyone out there knows the secrete to getting a senior case manager, or an HP tech support number here in the U.S. so I can get this thing fixed I'd love to know it.
    Fast becoming HP never again.
