Compatability of Sony DCR-SR45

Hi to all,
I'm wondering if anyone knows whether the Sony DCR-SR45 is compatible with FCE-HD? I want to buy a hard drive-based recorder....but don't have too much cash to spend. Will this camera work? Have any other recommendations for inexpensive, but good options?
Thanks in advance,
Sharks Fan

The only cameras that work directly with FCE 4 are TAPE based DV and HDV cameras plus any camera shooting AVCHD.
All other cameras will have to have their video converted to one of the above formats.

  • FCE compatability with SONY DCR-HC28

Hi - I recently bought a SONY DCR-HC28 to download a lot of footage into a project, but
Final Cut Express doesn't recognise it. Has anyone got these 2 working together ? Any tips ?
    Thank you
    James

No - I've used Final Cut a lot before, without this problem.
I bought FCE recently, and this is my 1st experience with it -
without managing to connect any camera to it.
I'm hooking a firewire cable to the computer, making sure the computer is restarted, switching the camera mode to play/edit, going through the
'easy setup' sequence: NTSC Firewire Basic (as well as the other NTSC
permutations), then capture - no good, then view - refresh A/V devices....
    still nothing...........
will try the 2 suggestions you made. Thanks a lot.

  • Sony dcr-sr45 mpeg-2 format

I know there have been previous posts on this topic, but I never really found a definite answer on how to fix the current problems. My mac recognizes the HDD but the videos are in mpeg-2 format. I can open them in FCP but they contain no audio. So, I read that I can download Streamclip and change the format. So, I did download it but tells me I don't have the MPEG-2 playback component. So, here's my question. If I download this component, will changing the format help me hear sound???
    Thanks

correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the mp2 component part of the FCP suite....?
I haven't got the slightest idea, I'm afraid. It might be worth looking into for Cyd M.
I know that Compressor is part of FCP, but that's for creating DVDs (which of course contain MPEG-2).

  • Sony dcr-trv14e compatibility

    Hi guys,
I have a sony dcr-trv14e I am trying to connect to my iMac and iMovies '11...
It isn't on the compatibility list (which is annoying) and I have tried to connect it via usb and via firewire but I can't get it to connect in any way at all.
I can't even find it via the system profiler.
Do I have any other methods or any hope at all of connecting this camera to my iMac so I can get some old MiniDV tapes on to the computer or do I have no hope.
    Thanks.

    Hi
It should work. See my list.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odwenGB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Sony DCR SR52E compatable???

I'm about to upgrade from my pc to a new iMac (as soon as Leopard O/S is released). I also have a Sony DCR SR52E HDD Handycam - Are they compatable?
I undertand there were issues but I expected the 'o8 software releases had addressed these issues, or may Leopard O/S? If not, is there a way round that is not too time consuming and complicated?

I've read the specs of your device on the Sony site.. a 'classic', SD, HDD camcorder...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306171
lists its successor models, so I give it a very high chance, iM08 does support it out of the box ...
iMHD≤6 does not support HDDcorders, for usage with the older versions of iM, you need 3rd party apps, as well-known Mpeg Streamclip (free) plus the mp2-playback-component (apple.com, 20$) ...
usually, Sony + Apple work 101% together.. (Sony built the first Apple Laptops )
and, no, your device doesn't use/need AVCHD codec... don't care about that ...

  • IPad/ Sony dcr-sx40 compatibility

Can't read downloaded movies from my Sony dcr-sx40 om IPad version 3.  Also, Safari won't download MPEG 2 software from apple.  How do I get IPad to use thes movies?

Well, I went to the pages you suggested and did make some adjustments in hopes of them solving the problem. They didn't work, but they did help me to notice a minor detail that might have something to do with the problem. On the Sony TRV950, the LCD display indicates that I have a firewire cable connected to an active device by displaying "DV IN" on the screen. What I've noticed, since I've tried using it, is that it sort of "flickers." It appears and goes away sporadically. I even noticed in the menu when I went to configure the so-called iLink, there is a section called "ADJ TEST" and I can't seem to select it because it, as well, flickers in the same manner. I'm continuing to look for discussions on this camera to see if this is a common problem, but logic leads me to believe that I may have a bad connection in the cable itself.
Any comment...or idea of what to do at this point?

  • Device Compatibility - Sony DCR TRV 355e

Does anyone know if the Sony DCR TRV 355e is compatible with Final Cut Pro. A client has shot footage on this camera that he wants us to use but we don't have a Hi8 camera or deck so we are going to have to use his camera and connect via firewire. The only problem is it is not listed on the Apple device support page - http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/devicelist.php
Has anyone used this camera before or know if it can connect to final cut before we invite him in on a wasted journey?

    The other thing I suggest...
Hi8 was a 'slippery' format to bring in digitally. I always had sync issues if I captured the whole tape.
This gets to be a pain... but if you want to stay free of sync issues capture 15 minutes max each pass.
Anything over that and you'll get slight audio drift that by 15 minutes starts to become noticable and by 1 hour is off by as much as a second or more!!
If you need to overlap some sections make sure you get some pre-roll.
It will work... just a pain.
    Good luck,

As long as you have an IEEE 1394 (FireWire/iLink) connection (which you do) then you should be fine. The support issue may have to do with device controllability (in Log and Capture, play/scrub/etc the camera from the FCP control interface).
If Final Cut cannot control your device for whatever reason, there is the simple workaround of using the +Non-Controllable Device+ preset under the Capture Settings tab.
For more info, refer to page 287 of the FCP user manual.

  • Does apple have update to idvd so I can use Sony dcr-sx44 camcorder

Does apple have an update to idvd so I can use sony dcr-sx44 camcorder?

If you already have iDVD then run Software Update, if there are any updates available for iDVD they will be posted. While that doesn't answer your question directly it is your best option. Looking at the software specifications for the camera it doesn't look like it was ever intended to work with OS X. This is what I found on Sony's website:
    Software
Supplied Software : PMB Ver.5.0 Supports Windows XP Service Pack3 (SP3)(32bit), Windows Vista Service Pack2 (SP2) (32bit), Windows 7, 64-bit editions and Starter (Edition) are not supported. Not supported by Mac OS.
Operating System Compatibility : "Windows XP SP3 * /Windows Vista SP2 ** /Windows7 * 64-bit editions and Starter (Edition) are not supported. The Windows Image Mastering API(IMAPI)Ver.2.0 or later is required to use the function for creating discs. ** Starter (Edition) are not supported. Standard installation is required. Operation is not assured if the above OS has been upgraded or in a multi-boot environment. "
I suspect a camera upgrade may be what you need to do.

  • OS X does not see my Sony DCR-PC110 video camera?

I just got the new all in one 27" MAC and could not wait to start editing my videos. Then a problem, I hook up my Sony DCR-PC110 with fire wire and nothing happens. The camera does not show up in the system at all, and of course Final Cut Express 4.0 show "No Comunication" instead of "VTR OK".
Is this camera no longer supported?
Is there anything I can try to get it to work?
Last but not least, if there is a compatability problem how can I get my collection of the kids video from the digital tape into Final Cut Express?

  • Sony DCR-TRV19 Compatible w/ FCP?

    Hello,
Is a Sony DCR-TRV19 mini DV Camera compatible with FCP5?
I've gone through the compatibility lists on this site and can't find this camera listed anywhere.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Marc Griffin

It should be OK. It's got an i.Link connector,
which you can use with a 4-pin-to-6-pin Firewire cable
and plug into your computer's Firewire 400 connector.
In FCP, choose the standard DV-NTSC setting with Firewire device control.

  • Looking for help getting imovie to recognize sony DCR-SR47 camcorder

Has anyone been able to up load to imovie from sony DCR-SR47 camcorder?

It depends on which camcorder you have.
If it records onto miniDV tape (..or "microMV" tape..) then you definitely need to use FireWire; nothing else will do. Buy one at any electronics store; it's called a FireWire or DV or i.Link cable. It must have a teeny 4-pin connector at one end (..to plug into the camera..) and a larger 6-pin connector at the other end (..to plug into your Mac..)
..unless you have a new MacBook Pro, which needs a slightly different shaped 9-pin FireWire 800 connector instead of the 6-pin connector.
You cannot use a USB connection for tape-based camcorders, even if they have a USB socket ..as that's just for transferring stills, not video.
If your camcorder does NOT shoot onto tape, then you'll need to transfer via USB. That applies for all chip-based and hard-drive based camcorders, and - I think - DVD-based camcorders.
All current AVCHD camcorders use USB.
If in doubt (..but there should be no doubt..) read the camcorder's instruction book. If you can't find the instructions, download them from the manufacturer's website ..almost all instructions are available online.
But if it needs FireWire - if it's a tape-based camcorder - you CANNOT use USB.

  • Sony DCR-DVD505 Handycam: Unable to get video clips, audio

Evaluating Adobe Premier.  Hopefully helpful for other Sony DCR-DVD505 users.
    Objectives:
    1) Get videos from Sony DCR-DVD505 handycam into Premier Elements
    2) Drag and drop various clips into Sceneline
    3) Insert menu markers
    4) Burn DVD
Stuck in Step 1, getting video from handycam, unable to get video clips (with audio)
    First Try: NO AUDIO.
The Sony DCR-DVD505 burns a mini-DVD (1.4 GB) while recording.  After "finalizing" the disk, the media may be imported into the computer.  Streaming was supported by Windows XP driver but is no longer supported in Windows Vista.   In fact, Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) does not even recognize the camera as a DVD drive!  So downgraded to Vista SP1 and used the Sony Picture Motion Browser to import media into computer as MPG files.  Each MPG file is a clip (corresponding exactly to camera record on-off sequence while shooting).  Then opened up Adobe Premier Elements 8.  Used get media to import all the MPG clips into "Organize".  Dragged and dropped various clips...inserted a menu or two and...burned the DVD.  PROBLEM: VIDEO OK, BUT NO AUDIO(?!).  The MPG files on computer play fine (with audio) inside Windows Media Players.  Read all sorts of nonsense about why Adobe Premier (probably old versions) cannot work with "low-quality/compressed" MPG and needs to be a particular type AVI soo....
    Second Try: Capture VOB directly
Forget the camera.  Insert the mini-DVD directly into computer DVD drive, create a new project and followed directions from  "Lowdown on VOB" http://forums.adobe.com/message/2117743 and "tools to convert to DVI" http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317.  I loaded the VOB directly and dropped them into  Timeline as advised by the second post (only hitch being the first VOB pertaining to the DVD menu is not recognized and is neither needed).
However, File > Export is always GREYED out (unusable).  And the status at bottom right seems to be looping on "Background Rendering".  DO I WAIT?  In any case, the whole video is showing up as a single continuous stream and what I want are the clips from the camera?!
Then I tried Prism (again as per the second forum post mentioned above).  It simply did something to process 30 minutes of video and crashed in the end without explanation - saying there was an error in conversion.
Is this AVI conversion even a good idea?  How would I get my clips back??
Bottomline.  My mini-DVD and imported MPGs plays fine in Windows Media Player.  However unable to extract the camera clips (with audio).

Dawg, I have the Sony DCR-DVD305, and have been using it successfully for quite a while with PE7, with few issues, once I had a workflow nailed down.
I believe the 505 is basically the same camera, with some additional features.
This workflow worked for me in the past so I'll pass that along:
Sony Browser to PC as Mpeg.
Mpeg to Windows Movie Maker, output to DV-AVI, taking default settings.
    DV-AVI imported into PE7.
This should also work for PE8.
Upon getting Cyberlinks PowerDirector v7, my new workflow changed to this:
I take the min-DVD directly from camcorder to my PC, and capture the disk via Power Director.
PD will convert the VOB's directly to DV-AVI Type 2 on one pass.
    I then load this DV-AVI into PE7.
(PD v7 was pre-installed on my new PC from HP, or it can be purchased from Cyberlink).
    Other options to try:
Copy the VOB's directly from the mini-DVD to your PC and use Prism to convert these to AVI.
Or load the VOB or Mpeg into PE, then use that to convert to AVI.
(Export to DV-AVI with PE8 is done with SHARE/PC, not Export under the File Menu, which is greyed out).
I've had many issues trying to work with Mpeg's and VOB's when loaded directly to PE with limited success.
So if you can get it converted successfully to AVI outside of PE, I've found this to be a better approach.
Post results, if any of this works for you...
Note: One other thing, if you are working directly with VOB's to PE, especially multiple VOB's from a single DVD, you can encounter out-of-sync issues between video and audio. If this occurs, review this link from Muvipix:
